Continual perturbations to the flow field in the square lid driven cavity can significantly impact both its stability and the dynamic characteristics of the system. In this study, the effect of these perturbations are analyzed via computational fluid dynamics simulations of a square, two-dimensional, lid driven cavity containing varying area fractions of suspended particles. The evolution over time of these particle-particle and particle-fluid interactions generate two-dimensional disturbance velocity changes in the flow field. In order to better understand the characteristics and effects of these changes, proper orthogonal decomposition analysis is performed on the velocity difference flow field to determine the dominant flow structures over the simulation time domain. The resulting eigenvectors and eigenvalues represent the varying dominant flow structures and their respective dominance over the simulation time, respectively. This is carried out at particle suspension area fractions from 10\% - 50\% and for Reynolds numbers of 100, 400, 700, and 1000. Critical flow regimes and particle suspension area fractions are discussed in order to characterize the stability of this particle-in-fluid system.
Regular perturbation solutions are obtained for the Stokes flow field, the first order effects of inertia on the flow field, and the primary and secondary pressure fields in the circular lid driven cavity. The physical mechanism that causes vortex breakdown exists at small Reynolds number; it is a stagnation of the secondary flow by an adverse pressure gradient. The discontinuity between the rotating lid and the stationary sidewall has negligible influence on the flow field provided that the inertial forcing of the secondary flow is not localized near the boundary discontinuity, and the Reynol…
A transition to unsteadiness of a flow inside a cubic diagonally lid-driven cavity with no-slip boundaries is numerically investigated by a series of direct numerical simulations (DNS) performed on 100^3 and 200^3 stretched grids. It is found that the observed oscillatory instability is setting in via a subcritical symmetry-breaking Hopf bifurcation. The instability evolves on two vortices in a coupled manner. Critical values of Reynolds number Recr=2320 and non-dimensional angular oscillating frequency omegacr=0.249 for transition from steady to oscillatory flow are accurately estimated. Char…
In the present paper, we examine the viscous flow evolution in a square cavity. Coupled with the stream function, the initial-boundary value problem of the vorticity is numerically solved by a method of iteration. The only boundary condition is the wall velocity which in turn defines the Dirichlet value for the stream function. We assert that the corner singularity in the cavity flow is in fact a theoretical artefact. By adopting suitably regulated lid velocity, excellent comparison with experiments is found because of the converged palinstrophy field. Our calculations demonstrate that asymmet…
Primary instability of the lid-driven flow in a cube is studied by a comprehensive linear stability approach. Two cases, in which the lid moves parallel to the cube sidewall or parallel to the diagonal plane, are considered. The SIMPLE procedure is applied for evaluation of the Krylov vectors needed for application of the Newton and Arnoldi iteration methods. The finite volume grid is gradually refined from 1003 to 2563 nodes. The computations result in the grid convergent values of the critical Reynolds number and oscillation frequency. Patterns of the most unstable perturbation are reported.…
In this work, numerical solutions of the two dimensional time dependent incompressible flow, in a driven cavity at high Reynolds number Re, are presented. At high Re, there is a controversy. Some studies predicted that the flow is steady, others found time dependent non-steady flow, either periodic or aperiodic. In this study, the driven lid cavity is successfully solved using a very fine grid mesh, for Re up to $30 000$. We discretize the Vorticity-Stream formulation of the Navier-Stokes equation with the SSPRK(5,4) scheme in a $1024\times1024$ grid. Using this very fine grid, the results obt…
In this article, three dimensional (3D) lid-driven cubic cavity flows have been studied numerically for various values of Reynolds number ($Re$). The numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations modeling incompressible viscous fluid flow in a cubic cavity is obtained via a methodology combining a first order accurate operator-splitting, $L^2$-projection Stokes solver, a wave-like equation treatment of the advection and finite element methods. The numerical results obtained for Re$=$400, 1000, and 3200 show a good agreement with available numerical and experimental results in literature. S…
Transition from steady state to intermittent chaos in the cubical lid-driven flow is investigated numerically. Fully three-dimensional stability analyses have revealed that the flow experiences an Andronov-Poincaré-Hopf bifurcation at a critical Reynolds number $Re_c$ = 1914. As for the 2D-periodic lid-driven cavity flows, the unstable mode originates from a centrifugal instability of the primary vortex core. A Reynolds-Orr analysis reveals that the unstable perturbation relies on a combination of the lift-up and anti lift-up mechanisms to extract its energy from the base flow. Once linearly u…
In this paper, we developed a mathematical model for the sedimentation process of small particles in a lid-driven cavity flow with an obstacle to model the transport of microplastic particles in rivers. A stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes simulation at moderate Reynolds-numbers provides the background flow field. Spherical particles are injected into this flow field and their equation of motion is solved to determine the number of particles that sediment on the surface of the obstacle. To capture the effect of typical biological organisms and biofilms on the bottom surface of river beds,…
This paper presents the large-eddy simulation of the lid-driven cubic cavity flow by the spectral element method (SEM) using the dynamic model. Two spectral filtering techniques suitable for these simulations have been implemented. Numerical results for Reynolds number $\text{Re}=12'000$ are showing very good agreement with other experimental and DNS results found in the literature.
Direct Numerical Simulation have been carried out for a two dimensional flow in a Lid driven cavity at Reynolds number 5000 and Prandtl number 7 with water as the working fluid. Both the side walls of the enclosure are insulated(i.e. adiabatic boundary condition), while the bottom plate is at higher temperature and the top wall is at colder temperature. Effects of heating of the bottom wall and movement of the top lid have been investigated by conducting numerical simulations at different Richardson numbers by varying from low and moderate magnitudes within the limits of Boussinesq-approximati…
The lid-driven cavity flow is a well-known benchmark problem for the validation of new numerical methods and techniques. In experimental and numerical studies with viscoelastic fluids in such lid-driven flows, purely-elastic instabilities have been shown to appear even at very low Reynolds numbers. A finite-volume viscoelastic code, using the log-conformation formulation, is used in this work to probe the effect of viscoelasticity on the appearance of such instabilities in two-dimensional lid-driven cavities for a wide range of aspect ratios (0.125 < height/length < 4.0), at different Deborah …
In that report solution to incompressible Navier - Stokes equations in non - dimensional form will be presented. Standard fundamental methods: SIMPLE, SIMPLER (SIMPLE Revised) and Vorticity-Stream function approach are compared and results of them are analyzed for standard CFD test case - Drived Cavity flow. Different aspect ratios of cavity and different Reynolds numbers are studied.
Particle image velocimetry is applied to the lid-driven flow in a cube to validate the numerical prediction of steady - oscillatory transition at lower than ever observed Reynolds number. Experimental results agree with the numerical simulation demonstrating large amplitude oscillatory motion overlaying the base quasi-two-dimensional flow in the mid-plane. A good agreement in the values of critical Reynolds number and frequency of the appearing oscillations, as well as similar spatial distributions of the oscillations amplitude are obtained.
In this paper we investigate a subgrid model based on an anisotropic version of the NS-$α$ model using a lid-driven cavity flow at a Reynolds number of 10,000. Previously the NS-$α$ model has only been used numerically in the isotropic form. The subgrid model is developed from the Eulerian-averaged anisotropic equations [Holm, \textit{Physica D}, v.133, pp 215-269, 1999]. It was found that when $α^{2}$ was based on the mesh numerical oscillations developed which manifested themselves in the appearance of streamwise vortices and a `mixing out' of the velocity profile. This is analogous to the C…
Wall-driven flow in square cavity has been studied extensively, yet it is more frequently for the rectangular cavity flow occurring in practical problems, and some flow characteristics about rectangular cavity have not been fully investigated. As a promising numerical simulation tool, the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is employed to simulate the lid-driven flow in a two-dimensional rectangular cavity in this paper. First, the code is validated for the standard square cavity, the velocity profiles, stream function values and center positions of the primary and second vortexes at different Re a…
Large-eddy simulations of the turbulent flow in a lid-driven cubical cavity have been carried out at a Reynolds number of 12000 using spectral element methods. Two distinct subgrid-scales models, namely a dynamic Smagorinsky model and a dynamic mixed model, have been both implemented and used to perform long-lasting simulations required by the relevant time scales of the flow. All filtering levels make use of explicit filters applied in the physical space (on an element-by-element approach) and spectral (modal) spaces. The two subgrid-scales models are validated and compared to available exper…
We investigated experimentally stably stratified turbulent flows in a lid driven cavity with a non-zero vertical mean temperature gradient in order to identify the parameters governing the mean and turbulent flows and to understand their effects on the momentum and heat transfer. We found that the mean velocity patterns (e.g., the form and the sizes of the large-scale circulations) depend strongly on the degree of the temperature stratification. In the case of strong stable stratification, the strong turbulence region is located in the vicinity of the main large-scale circulation. We detected …
We propose a Finite Volume Method for the simulation of elastoviscoplastic flows, modelled after the extension to the Herschel-Bulkley model by Saramito [J. Non-Newton. Fluid Mech. 158 (2009) 154-161]. The method is akin to methods for viscoelastic flows. It is applicable to cell-centred grids, both structured and unstructured, and includes a novel pressure stabilisation technique of the "momentum interpolation" type. Stabilisation of the velocity and stresses is achieved through a "both sides diffusion" technique and the CUBISTA convection scheme, respectively. A second-order accurate tempora…
We investigate the performance of the finite volume method in solving viscoplastic flows. The creeping square lid-driven cavity flow of a Bingham plastic is chosen as the test case and the constitutive equation is regularised as proposed by Papanastasiou [J. Rheol. 31 (1987) 385-404]. It is shown that the convergence rate of the standard SIMPLE pressure-correction algorithm, which is used to solve the algebraic equation system that is produced by the finite volume discretisation, severely deteriorates as the Bingham number increases, with a corresponding increase in the non-linearity of the eq…
The dynamics of suspensions plays a crucial role on the evolution of geophysical systems such as lava lakes, magma chambers and magma oceans. During their cooling and solidification, these magmatic bodies involve convective viscous fluids and dispersed solid crystals that can form either a cumulate or a floating lid by sedimentation. We study such systems based on internal heating convection experiments in high Prandtl fluids bearing plastic beads. We aim to determine the conditions required to produce a floating lid or a sedimented deposit. We show that although the sign of particles buoyancy…
In this study, the hyperbolic method is adopted to explore the flow field states of incompressible flow in a four-sided lid-driven square cavity. In particular, we focus on the flow bifurcation obtained at the critical Reynolds number $R_e \simeq 130$. In the hyperbolic method, the diffusive term is transformed into an hyperbolic one by introducing a diffusion flux term, which is the solution of an additional equation. A classical Riemann-like solver with a finite-volume discretization is thus employed for the full flux (splitted into advective and diffusive parts), in order to solve the stead…
We extend our recent work on the creeping flow of a Bingham fluid in a lid-driven cavity, to the study of inertial effects, using a finite volume method and the Papanastasiou regularisation of the Bingham constitutive model [J. Rheology 31 (1987) 385-404]. The finite volume method used belongs to a very popular class of methods for solving Newtonian flow problems, which use the SIMPLE algorithm to solve the discretised set of equations, and have matured over the years. By regularising the Bingham constitutive equation it is easy to extend such a solver to Bingham flows since all that this requ…
A novel reduced-order model for nonlinear flows is presented. The model arises from a resolvent decomposition in which the nonlinear advection terms of the Navier-Stokes equation are considered as the input to a linear system in Fourier space. Results show that Taylor-Görtler-like vortices can be represented from a low-order resolvent decomposition of a nonlinear lid-driven cavity flow. The present approach provides an approximation of the fluctuating velocity given the time-mean and the time history of a single velocity probe.
An analytical solution for the flow field of a shear flow over a rectangular cavity containing a second immiscible fluid is derived. While flow of a single-phase fluid over a cavity is a standard case investigated in fluid dynamics, flow over a cavity which is filled with a second immiscible fluid, has received little attention. The flow filed inside the cavity is considered to define a boundary condition for the outer flow which takes the form of a Navier slip condition with locally varying slip length. The slip-length function is determined from the related problem of lid-driven cavity flow.…
We present a numerical method specifically designed for simulating three-dimensional fluid--structure interaction (FSI) problems based on the reference map technique (RMT). The RMT is a fully Eulerian FSI numerical method that allows fluids and large-deformation elastic solids to be represented on a single fixed computational grid. This eliminates the need for meshing complex geometries typical in other FSI approaches, and greatly simplifies the coupling between fluid and solids. We develop the first three-dimensional implementation of the RMT, parallelized using the distributed memory paradig…
The proposed flow in a 3-D cubic cavity is driven by its parallel walls moving in perpendicular directions to create a genuinely three-dimensional highly separated vortical flow yet having simple single-block cubical geometry of computational domain. The elevated level of helicity is caused by motion of a wall in the direction of axis of primary vortex created by a parallel wall. The velocity vector field is obtained numerically by using second-order upwind scheme and 200^3 grid. Helicity, magnitude of normalized helicity and kinematic vorticity number are evaluated for Reynolds numbers rangin…
The structure and dynamics of confined suspensions of particles of arbitrary shape is of interest in multiple disciplines, from biology to engineering. Theoretical studies are often limited by the complexity of long-range particle-particle and particle-wall forces, including many-body fluctuating hydrodynamic interactions. Here, we report a computational study on the diffusion of spherical and cylindrical particles confined in a spherical cavity. We rely on an Immersed-Boundary General geometry Ewald-like method to capture lubrication and long-range hydrodynamics, and include appropriate non-s…
High resolution simulations of incompressible flows have become routine across a range of engineering applications. Despite their routine use, due to the high dimensional parameter space present for most practical applications, a comprehensive exploration of the available parameter space is often impractical. In this work, we demonstrate the ability of physics-constrained deep learning methods to provide an efficient means of exploring high-dimensional parameter spaces with minimal amounts of data from high resolution computational fluid dynamic simulations. As a specific application, we choos…
Large-eddy simulations of incompressible Newtonian fluid flows with approximate deconvolution models based on the van Cittert method are reported. The Legendre spectral element method is used for the spatial discretization to solve the filtered Navier--Stokes equations. A novel variant of approximate deconvolution models blended with a mixed scale model using a dynamic evaluation of the subgrid-viscosity constant is proposed. This model is validated by comparing the large-eddy simulation with the direct numerical simulation of the flow in a lid-driven cubical cavity, performed at a Reynolds nu…
A fluid dynamics video is linked to this article, which have been submitted to the Gallery of Fluid Motion as part of the 65th American Physical Society meeting of the Division of Fluid Dynamics, held in San Diego, California, USA, over 17-20 November 2012. The video serves to visualize flows generated in a rectangular enclosure that are subjected to both mechanical and thermal forcing through a common horizontal boundary. This system exhibits features consistent with either horizontal convection or lid-driven cavity flows depending on the ratio between thermal and mechanical stirring, and thr…
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been carried out to investigate the slip of fluid in the lid driven cavity flow where the no-slip boundary condition causes unphysical stress divergence. The MD results not only show the existence of fluid slip but also verify the validity of the Navier slip boundary condition. To better understand the fluid slip in this problem, a continuum hydrodynamic model has been formulated based upon the MD verification of the Navier boundary condition and the Newtonian stress. Our model has no adjustable parameter because all the material parameters (density, vi…
The Koopman Mode Decomposition (KMD) is a data-analysis technique which is often used to extract the spatio-temporal patterns of complex flows. In this paper, we use KMD to study the dynamics of the lid-driven flow in a two-dimensional square cavity based on theorems related to the spectral theory of the Koopman operator. We adapt two algorithms, from the classical Fourier and power spectral analysis, to compute the discrete and continuous spectrum of the Koopman operator for the post-transient flows. Properties of the Koopman operator spectrum are linked to the sequence of flow regimes occurr…
Interfacial boundary conditions determined from empirical or ad-hoc models remain the standard approach to model fluid flows over porous media, even in situations where the topology of the porous medium is known. We propose a non-empirical and accurate method to compute the effective boundary conditions at the interface between a porous surface and an overlying flow. Using multiscale expansion (homogenization) approach, we derive a tensorial generalized version of the empirical condition suggested by Beavers & Joseph (1967). The components of the tensors determining the effective slip velocity…
In the study of gas dynamics, theoretical modeling and numerical simulation are mostly set up with deterministic settings. Given the coarse-grained modeling in theories of fluids, considerable uncertainties may exist between flow-field solutions and real-world physics. To study the emergence, propagation and evolution of uncertainties from molecular to hydrodynamic level poses great opportunities and challenges to develop both sound theories and reliable multi-scale algorithms. In this paper, we study the stochastic behavior of multi-scale gas dynamic systems, especially focusing on the non-eq…
