Numerical calculations of the 2-D steady incompressible driven cavity flow are presented. The Navier-Stokes equations in streamfunction and vorticity formulation are solved numerically using a fine uniform grid mesh of 601x601. The steady driven cavity solutions are computed for Re<21,000 with a maximum absolute residuals of the governing equations that were less than 10-10. A new quaternary vortex at the bottom left corner and a new tertiary vortex at the top left corner of the cavity are observed in the flow field as the Reynolds number increases. Detailed results are presented and comparisons are made with benchmark solutions found in the literature.
Augmented Lagrangian preconditioners have successfully yielded Reynolds-robust preconditioners for the stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, but only for specific discretizations. The discretizations for which these preconditioners have been designed possess error estimates which depend on the Reynolds number, with the discretization error deteriorating as the Reynolds number is increased. In this paper we present an augmented Lagrangian preconditioner for the Scott-Vogelius discretization on barycentrically-refined meshes. This achieves both Reynolds-robust performance and Reynol…
A Fourier/Modal-Spectral-Element Method for the Simulation of High-Reynolds Number Incompressible Stratified Flows in Domains with a Single Non-Periodic Direction
The benchmark test case for non-orthogonal grid mesh, the "driven skewed cavity flow", first introduced by Demirdzic et al. (1992, IJNMF, 15, 329) for skew angles of alpha=30 and alpha=45, is reintroduced with a more variety of skew angles. The benchmark problem has non-orthogonal, skewed grid mesh with skew angle (alpha). The governing 2-D steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in general curvilinear coordinates are solved for the solution of driven skewed cavity flow with non-orthogonal grid mesh using a numerical method which is efficient and stable even at extreme skew angles. Highl…
In Benzi & Olshanskii (SIAM J.~Sci.~Comput., 28(6) (2006)) a preconditioner of augmented Lagrangian type was presented for the two-dimensional stationary incompressible Navier--Stokes equations that exhibits convergence almost independent of Reynolds number. The algorithm relies on a highly specialized multigrid method involving a custom prolongation operator and is tightly coupled to the use of piecewise constant finite elements for the pressure. However, the prolongation operator and velocity element used do not directly extend to three dimensions: the local solves necessary in the prolongat…
An a priori reduced order method based on the proper generalised decomposition (PGD) is proposed to compute parametric solutions involving turbulent incompressible flows of interest in an industrial context, using OpenFOAM. The PGD framework is applied for the first time to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the turbulent regime, to compute a generalised solution for velocity, pressure and turbulent viscosity, explicitly depending on the design parameters of the problem. In order to simulate flows of industrial interest, a minimally intrusive implementation based on OpenFOAM SIMPLE …
Statistical solutions, which are time-parameterized probability measures on spaces of square-integrable functions, have been established as a suitable framework for global solutions of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (NSE). We compute numerical approximations of statistical solutions of NSE on two-dimensional domains with non-periodic boundary conditions and empirically investigate the convergence of these approximations and their observables. For the numerical solver, we use Monte Carlo sampling with an H(div)-FEM based deterministic solver. Our numerical experiments for high Reynolds …
We present a second-order monolithic method for solving incompressible Navier--Stokes equations on irregular domains with quadtree grids. A semi-collocated grid layout is adopted, where velocity variables are located at cell vertices, and pressure variables are located at cell centers. Compact finite difference methods with ghost values are used to discretize the advection and diffusion terms of the velocity. A pressure gradient and divergence operator on the quadtree that use compact stencils are developed. Furthermore, the proposed method is extended to cubical domains with octree grids. Num…
Numerical solutions of 2-D steady incompressible flow inside a triangular cavity are presented. For the purpose of comparing our results with several different triangular cavity studies with different triangle geometries, a general triangle mapped onto a computational domain is considered. The Navier-Stokes equations in general curvilinear coordinates in streamfunction and vorticity formulation are numerically solved. Using a very fine grid mesh, the triangular cavity flow is solved for high Reynolds numbers. The results are compared with the numerical solutions found in the literature and als…
The accurate numerical simulation of high Reynolds number incompressible flows is a challenging topic in computational fluid dynamics. Classical inf-sup stable methods like the Taylor-Hood element or only $L^2$-conforming discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods relax the divergence constraint in the variational formulation. However, unlike divergence-free methods, this relaxation leads to a pressure-dependent contribution in the velocity error which is proportional to the inverse of the viscosity, thus resulting in methods that lack pressure robustness and have difficulties in preserving structure…
In this paper we analyze a pressure-robust method based on divergence-free mixed finite element methods with continuous interior penalty stabilization. The main goal is to prove an $O(h^{k+1/2})$ error estimate for the $L^2$ norm of the velocity in the convection dominated regime. This bound is pressure robust (the error bound of the velocity does not depend on the pressure) and also convection robust (the constants in the error bounds are independent of the Reynolds number).
We propose two Hybrid High-Order (HHO) methods for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and investigate their robustness with respect to the Reynolds number. While both methods rely on a HHO formulation of the viscous term, the pressure-velocity coupling is fundamentally different, up to the point that the two approaches can be considered antithetical. The first method is kinetic energy preserving, meaning that the skew-symmetric discretization of the convective term is guaranteed not to alter the kinetic energy balance. The approximated velocity fields exactly satisfy the divergence fre…
We investigate a projection-based reduced-order model of the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for moderate Reynolds numbers. In particular, we construct an "embedded" reduced basis space, by applying proper orthogonal decomposition to the Shifted Boundary Method, a high-fidelity embedded method recently developed. We focus on the geometrical parametrization through level-set geometries, using a fixed Cartesian background geometry and the associated mesh. This approach avoids both remeshing and the development of a reference domain formulation, as typically done in fitted mesh fini…
We propose an augmented Lagrangian preconditioner for a three-field stress-velocity-pressure discretization of stationary non-Newtonian incompressible flow with an implicit constitutive relation of power-law type. The discretization employed makes use of the divergence-free Scott-Vogelius pair for the velocity and pressure. The preconditioner builds on the work [P. E. Farrell, L. Mitchell, and F. Wechsung, SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 41 (2019), pp. A3073-A3096], where a Reynolds-robust preconditioner for the three-dimensional Newtonian system was introduced. The preconditioner employs a specialized …
Algorithms for studying transitions and instabilities in incompressible flows typically require the solution of linear systems with the full Jacobian matrix. Other popular approaches, like gradient-based design optimization and fully implicit time integration, also require very robust solvers for this type of linear system. We present a parallel fully coupled multilevel incomplete factorization preconditioner for the 3D stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a structured grid. The algorithm and software are based on the robust two-level method developed by Wubs and Thies. In this…
We introduce a new regularization model for incompressible fluid flow, which is a regularization of the EMAC formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) that we call EMAC-Reg. The EMAC (energy, momentum, and angular momentum conserving) formulation has proved to be a useful formulation because it conserves energy, momentum and angular momentum even when the divergence constraint is only weakly enforced. However it is still a NSE formulation and so cannot resolve higher Reynolds number flows without very fine meshes. By carefully introducing regularization into the EMAC formulation, we cre…
We develop a novel iterative solution method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with boundary conditions coupled with reduced models. The iterative algorithm is designed based on the variational multiscale formulation and the generalized-$α$ scheme. The spatiotemporal discretization leads to a block structure of the resulting consistent tangent matrix in the Newton-Raphson procedure. As a generalization of the conventional block preconditioners, a three-level nested block preconditioner is introduced to attain a better representation of the Schur complement, which plays a key role …
The magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations are generally known to be difficult to solve numerically, due to their highly nonlinear structure and the strong coupling between the electromagnetic and hydrodynamic variables, especially for high Reynolds and coupling numbers. In this work, we present a scalable augmented Lagrangian preconditioner for a finite element discretization of the $\mathbf{B}$-$\mathbf{E}$ formulation of the incompressible viscoresistive MHD equations. For stationary problems, our solver achieves robust performance with respect to the Reynolds and coupling numbers in two dime…
We consider model order reduction based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) for unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes problems, assuming that the snapshots are given by spatially adapted finite element solutions. We propose two approaches of deriving stable POD-Galerkin reduced-order models for this context. In the first approach, the pressure term and the continuity equation are eliminated by imposing a weak incompressibility constraint with respect to a pressure reference space. In the second approach, we derive an inf-sup stable velocity-pressure reduced-order model by enriching the ve…
