Numerical solutions of 2-D steady incompressible flow inside a triangular cavity are presented. For the purpose of comparing our results with several different triangular cavity studies with different triangle geometries, a general triangle mapped onto a computational domain is considered. The Navier-Stokes equations in general curvilinear coordinates in streamfunction and vorticity formulation are numerically solved. Using a very fine grid mesh, the triangular cavity flow is solved for high Reynolds numbers. The results are compared with the numerical solutions found in the literature and also with analytical solutions as well. Detailed results are presented.
This work presents a novel interpolation-free mesh adaptation technique for the Euler equations within the arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian framework. For the spatial discretization, we consider a residual distribution scheme, which provides a pretty simple way to achieve high order accuracy on unstructured grids. Thanks to a special interpretation of the mesh connectivity changes as a series of fictitious continuous deformations, we can enforce by construction the so-called geometric conservation law, which helps to avoid spurious oscillations while solving the governing equations over dynamic d…
The benchmark test case for non-orthogonal grid mesh, the "driven skewed cavity flow", first introduced by Demirdzic et al. (1992, IJNMF, 15, 329) for skew angles of alpha=30 and alpha=45, is reintroduced with a more variety of skew angles. The benchmark problem has non-orthogonal, skewed grid mesh with skew angle (alpha). The governing 2-D steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in general curvilinear coordinates are solved for the solution of driven skewed cavity flow with non-orthogonal grid mesh using a numerical method which is efficient and stable even at extreme skew angles. Highl…
This work discusses the application of an affine reconstructed nodal DG method for unstructured grids of triangles. Solving the diffusion terms in the DG method is non-trivial due to the solution representations being piecewise continuous. Hence, the diffusive flux is not defined on the interface of elements. The proposed numerical approach reconstructs a smooth solution in a parallelogram that is enclosed by the quadrilateral formed by two adjacent triangle elements. The interface between these two triangles is the diagonal of the enclosed parallelogram. Similar to triangles, the mapping of p…
Two widely used sub-grid scale models, the standard and the dynamic Smagorinsky models were tested in a simulation of the flow in a thermally driven 3D cavity at Rayleigh number of Ra=1E9. The main focus of the research is the response of the subgrid scale models to the coarse mesh and their ability to predict the flow in a thermally driven 3D cavity with the mesh resolution below generally accepted LES standards. The research is motivated by investigating a feasible modeling strategy for the particulate flow in the wall-bounded side-wall heated cavity. As URANS and hybrid RANS-LES models fail…
In this work, we make two improvements on the staggered grid hydrodynamics (SGH) Lagrangian scheme for modeling 2-dimensional compressible multi-material flows on triangular mesh. The first improvement is the construction of a dynamic local remeshing scheme for preventing mesh distortion. The remeshing scheme is similar to many published algorithms except that it introduces some special operations for treating grids around multi-material interfaces. This makes the simulation of extremely deforming and topology-variable multi-material processes possible, such as the complete process of a heavy …
In this work, numerical solutions of the two dimensional time dependent incompressible flow, in a driven cavity at high Reynolds number Re, are presented. At high Re, there is a controversy. Some studies predicted that the flow is steady, others found time dependent non-steady flow, either periodic or aperiodic. In this study, the driven lid cavity is successfully solved using a very fine grid mesh, for Re up to $30 000$. We discretize the Vorticity-Stream formulation of the Navier-Stokes equation with the SSPRK(5,4) scheme in a $1024\times1024$ grid. Using this very fine grid, the results obt…
In this work a result of existence and uniqueness for a plane cavity driven steady flow is deduced using an analytical method for the resolution of a linear partial differential problem on a triangular domain. The solution admits a symbolic expression based on integration over the domain. Some examples of flow are computed and graphed. In particular, it is shown a realistic example of a shear-forced flow with two eddies, usually computed only by numerical methods. The mathematical techniques used for the demonstration of the main result are elementary.
Primary instability of the lid-driven flow in a cube is studied by a comprehensive linear stability approach. Two cases, in which the lid moves parallel to the cube sidewall or parallel to the diagonal plane, are considered. The SIMPLE procedure is applied for evaluation of the Krylov vectors needed for application of the Newton and Arnoldi iteration methods. The finite volume grid is gradually refined from 1003 to 2563 nodes. The computations result in the grid convergent values of the critical Reynolds number and oscillation frequency. Patterns of the most unstable perturbation are reported.…
Algorithms for studying transitions and instabilities in incompressible flows typically require the solution of linear systems with the full Jacobian matrix. Other popular approaches, like gradient-based design optimization and fully implicit time integration, also require very robust solvers for this type of linear system. We present a parallel fully coupled multilevel incomplete factorization preconditioner for the 3D stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a structured grid. The algorithm and software are based on the robust two-level method developed by Wubs and Thies. In this…
A transition to unsteadiness of a flow inside a cubic diagonally lid-driven cavity with no-slip boundaries is numerically investigated by a series of direct numerical simulations (DNS) performed on 100^3 and 200^3 stretched grids. It is found that the observed oscillatory instability is setting in via a subcritical symmetry-breaking Hopf bifurcation. The instability evolves on two vortices in a coupled manner. Critical values of Reynolds number Recr=2320 and non-dimensional angular oscillating frequency omegacr=0.249 for transition from steady to oscillatory flow are accurately estimated. Char…
A finite element method for solving nonlinear differential equations on a grid, with potential applicability to computational fluid dynamics (CFD), is developed and tested. The current method facilitates the computation of solutions of a high polynomial degree on a grid. A high polynomial degree is achieved by interpolating both the value, and the value of the derivatives up to a given order, of continuously distributed unknown variables. The two-dimensional lid-driven cavity, a common benchmark problem for CFD methods, is used as a test case. It is shown that increasing the polynomial degree …
We consider the problem of coarse-graining in the context of finite-volume fluid models. If a variable is defined on a high-resolution grid it may be coarse-grained so that it is defined on a grid of lower resolution. In general this will cause some information about the variable to be lost. In particular, horizontal divergences, gradients or other operators calculated on the coarse grid after projecting may differ from those calculated on the fine grid. In some cases we are able to choose averaging weights for coarse-graining such that the coarse-grid operators will give a result approximatin…
Wall-driven flow in square cavity has been studied extensively, yet it is more frequently for the rectangular cavity flow occurring in practical problems, and some flow characteristics about rectangular cavity have not been fully investigated. As a promising numerical simulation tool, the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is employed to simulate the lid-driven flow in a two-dimensional rectangular cavity in this paper. First, the code is validated for the standard square cavity, the velocity profiles, stream function values and center positions of the primary and second vortexes at different Re a…
We extend our recent work on the creeping flow of a Bingham fluid in a lid-driven cavity, to the study of inertial effects, using a finite volume method and the Papanastasiou regularisation of the Bingham constitutive model [J. Rheology 31 (1987) 385-404]. The finite volume method used belongs to a very popular class of methods for solving Newtonian flow problems, which use the SIMPLE algorithm to solve the discretised set of equations, and have matured over the years. By regularising the Bingham constitutive equation it is easy to extend such a solver to Bingham flows since all that this requ…
The mixing in three-dimensional enclosures is investigated numerically using flow in cubical cavity as a geometrically simple model of various natural and engineering flows. The mixing rate is evaluated for up to the value of Reynolds number Re=2000 for several representative scenarios of moving cavity walls: perpendicular motion of the parallel cavity walls (Case A), motion of a wall in its plane along its diagonal (Case B1), motion of two perpendicular walls outward the common edge (Case B2), and the parallel cavity walls in motion either in parallel directions (Case B3) or in opposite direc…
The problem of natural convection in a laterally heated three-dimensional cubic cavity under the action of an externally imposed magnetic field is revisited. Flows at the Rayleigh number Ra=10^6 and the Hartmann number Ha=100, and three different orientations of the magnetic field are considered. The problem is solved using two independent numerical methods based on the second order finite-volume discretization schemes on structured Cartesian grids. Convergence toward grid-independent results is examined versus the grid refinement and near-wall grid stretching. Converged benchmark-quality resu…
The proposed flow in a 3-D cubic cavity is driven by its parallel walls moving in perpendicular directions to create a genuinely three-dimensional highly separated vortical flow yet having simple single-block cubical geometry of computational domain. The elevated level of helicity is caused by motion of a wall in the direction of axis of primary vortex created by a parallel wall. The velocity vector field is obtained numerically by using second-order upwind scheme and 200^3 grid. Helicity, magnitude of normalized helicity and kinematic vorticity number are evaluated for Reynolds numbers rangin…
