The empirical valence bond (EVB) method [J. Chem. Phys. 52, 1262 (1970)] has always embodied charge transfer processes. The mechanism of that behavior is examined here and recast for use as a new empirical potential energy surface for large-scale simulations. A two-state model is explored. The main features of the model are: (1) Explicit decomposition of the total system electron density is invoked; (2) The charge is defined through the density decomposition into constituent contributions; (3) The charge transfer behavior is controlled through the resonance energy matrix elements which cannot be ignored; and (4) A reference-state approach, similar in spirit to the EVB method, is used to define the resonance state energy contributions in terms of "knowable" quantities. With equal validity, the new potential energy can be expressed as a nonthermal ensemble average with a nonlinear but analytical charge dependence in the occupation number. Dissociation to neutral species for a gas-phase process is preserved. A variant of constrained search density functional theory is advocated as the preferred way to define an energy for a given charge.
A two-orbital two-electron diatomic model resembling LiH is used to investigate the differences between the exact Löwdin-Shull and approximate Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and Baerends-Buijse density matrix functionals in the medium- to long-distance dissociation region. In case of homolytic dissociation (one electron on each atom), the approximate functionals fail to generate the correct energy due to a compromise between the Hartree-Fock component (which favors partial charge transfer) and the strong correlation component (which hampers charge transfer). The exact functional is able to generate t…
Simple non-empirical procedure for spin-component-scaled MP2 methods applied to the calculation of dissociation energy curve of noncovalently-interacting systems
The nonrelativistic energy together with relativistic and quantum electrodynamic corrections for all the molecular hydrogen isotopologues (D$_2$, T$_2$, HD, HT, DT) were evaluated without expansion in the electron-nucleus mass ratio. The obtained results significantly improve the uncertainty of theoretical predictions, reaching a value below 1 MHz for the total dissociation energy. We observe good agreement with the experimental value for D$_2$ and $3\,σ$ discrepancy for the HD molecule, while no experimental values for the dissociation energy of molecules involving tritium have yet been obtai…
A globally correct potential energy surface (PES) for the \hp\ molecular ion is presented. The Born-Oppenheimer (BO) \ai\ grid points of Pavanello et. al. [\textit{J. Chem. Phys.} {\bf 136}, 184303 (2012)] are refitted as BOPES75K, which reproduces the energies below dissociation with a root mean square deviation of 0.05~\cm; points between dissociation and 75\,000 \cm\ are reproduced with the average accuracy of a few wavenumbers. The new PES75K+ potential combines BOPES75K with adiabatic, relativistic and quantum electrodynamics (QED) surfaces to provide the most accurate representation of t…
The vibrational dynamics of formic acid monomer (FAM) and dimer (FAD) is investigated from machine-learned potential energy surfaces at the MP2 (PES$_{\rm MP2}$) and transfer-learned (PES$_{\rm TL}$) to the CCSD(T) levels of theory. The normal modes and anharmonic frequencies of all modes below 2000 cm$^{-1}$ agree favourably with experiment whereas the OH-stretch mode is challenging for FAM and FAD from normal mode analyses and finite-temperature MD simulations. VPT2 calculations on PES$_{\rm TL}$ for FAM reproduce the experimental OH frequency to within 22 cm$^{-1}$. For FAD the VPT2 calcula…
Despite the importance of ligand dissociation energies for computational chemistry, obtaining accurate ab initio reference data is difficult and density-functional methods of uncertain reliability are chosen for feasibility reasons. Here, we consider advanced coupled-cluster and multi-configurational approaches to reinvestigate our WCCR10 set of ten gas-phase ligand dissociation energies. We assess the potential multi-configurational character of all molecules involved in these reactions in order to determine where single-reference coupled-cluster approaches can be applied. For some reactions …
Unrestricted DFT methods are typically expected to describe the homolytic dissociation of nonpolar single bonds in neutral species with qualitative accuracy, due to the lack of significant delocalization error. We however find that many widely used density functional approximations fail to describe features along the dissociation curve of the simple H$_2$ molecule. This is not an universal failure of DFT in the sense that many classic functionals like PBE and B3LYP give very reasonable results, as do some more modern methods like MS2. However, some other widely used functionals like B97-D (emp…
Interactions between molecules and electrode surfaces play a key role in electrochemical processes and are a subject of extensive research, both experimental and theoretical. In this manuscript, we address the water dissociation reaction on a Pd(111) electrode surface, modelled as a slab embedded in an external electric field. We aim at unraveling the relationship between surface charge and zero-point-energy in aiding or hindering this reaction. We calculate energy barriers with dispersion-corrected density-functional theory and an efficient parallel implementation of the nudged-elastic-band m…
The dissociation energy of H$_2$ represents a benchmark quantity to test the accuracy of first-principles calculations. We present a new measurement of the energy interval between the EF $^1Σ_g^+(v=0,N=1)$ state and the 54p1$_1$ Rydberg state of H$_2$. When combined with previously determined intervals, this new measurement leads to an improved value of the dissociation energy $D_0^{N=1}$ of ortho-H$_2$ that has, for the first time, reached a level of uncertainty that is three times smaller than the contribution of about 1 MHz resulting from the finite size of the proton. The new result of 359…
We introduced a new electron density n(ε) by projecting the spatial electron density n(r) onto the energy coordinate ε defined with the external potential υ(r) of interest. Then, a density functional theory (DFT) was formulated, where n(ε) serves as a fundamental variable for the electronic energy. It was demonstrated that the Kohn-Sham equation can also be adapted to the DFT that employs the density n(ε) as an argument to the exchange energy functional. An important attribute of the energy density is that it involves the spatially non-local population of the spin-adapted density n(r) at the b…
A detailed computational analysis has been performed, considering copper atomic contacts that are exposed directly to water molecules, hydroxyl groups, and monatomic as well as molecular hydrogen and oxygen species. The optimized physical bonding structure, electrical conductance and inelastic tunneling spectra (IETS) have been determined theoretically for moderately large structures by performing appropriate ab-initio and semi-empirical calculations. By considering the aforementioned properties, it has been possible to determine that some of the molecular bridging structures may be regarded a…
Elimination of the asymptotic fractional dissociation problem in Kohn-Sham density functional theory using the ensemble-generalization approach
Kronik,Phys. Rev. Lett.
Improving XYG3-type Doubly Hybrid Approximation using Self-Interaction Corrected SCAN Density and Orbitals via the PZ-SIC Framework: the xDH@SCAN(SIC) Approach
The energy and analytic gradient are developed for FMO combined with the Hartree-Fock method augmented with three empirical corrections (HF-3c). The auxiliary basis set approach to FMO is extended to perform pair interaction energy decomposition analysis. The FMO accuracy is evaluated for several typical systems including 3 proteins. Pair interaction energies computed with different approaches in FMO are compared for a water cluster and protein-ligand complexes.
The recently developed localized orbital scaling correction (LOSC) method shows the ability to systematically and size-consistently reduce the delocalization error existing in conventional density functional approximations (DFAs). Applying LOSC to conventional DFAs (LOSC-DFAs) gives much improvement for the description of related properties, including band gaps, total energies and photoemission spectra. However, concern and issue remain: the application of LOSC to DFAs is mainly through a post self-consistent field (SCF) manner, and few results from applying LOSC to DFAs with a SCF manner have…

In this communication we draw attention on serious flaws that plague recently reported antioxidant properties of atorvastatin (ATV) in methanol. First and foremost, we emphasize that the O-H bond dissociation energies (BDE) of about 400\,kcal/mol previously reported are completely wrong. Further, we present results refuting the previous claim that the proton affinity (PA) of ATV is smaller than that of the ascorbic acid. That unfounded claim relies on incorrect data for PA's ascorbic acid (which we correct here) circulated in the literature. Further, we correct the values of the chemical react…
The charge delocalization error, besides nondynamic correlation, has been a major challenge to density functional theory. Contemporary functionals undershoot the dissociation of symmetric charged dimers A2+, a simple but stringent test, predict a spurious barrier and improperly delocalize charges for charged molecular clusters. We extend a functional designed for nondynamic correlation to treat the charge delocalization error by modifying the nondynamic correlation for parallel spins. The modified functional eliminates those problems and reduces the multielectron self-interaction error. Furthe…
The delocalization error of popular density functional approximations (DFAs) leads to diversified problems in present-day density functional theory calculations. For achieving a universal elimination of delocalization error, we develop a localized orbital scaling correction (LOSC) framework, which unifies our previously proposed global and local scaling approaches. The LOSC framework accurately characterizes the distributions of global and local fractional electrons, and is thus capable of correcting system energy, energy derivative and electron density in a self-consistent and size-consistent…
