A two-orbital two-electron diatomic model resembling LiH is used to investigate the differences between the exact Löwdin-Shull and approximate Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and Baerends-Buijse density matrix functionals in the medium- to long-distance dissociation region. In case of homolytic dissociation (one electron on each atom), the approximate functionals fail to generate the correct energy due to a compromise between the Hartree-Fock component (which favors partial charge transfer) and the strong correlation component (which hampers charge transfer). The exact functional is able to generate the physically correct answer by enforcing the equi-charge distribution of the bonding and antibonding orbitals. Besides, the approximate functionals also have issues in correctly describing heterolytic dissociation (two electrons on one atom) due to the strong correlation component hampering charge transfer. In this work, we propose a new scheme in which the homolytic dissociation problem for approximate functionals is avoided by adding a Lagrange multiplier that enforces equi-charge distribution of the bonding and antibonding orbitals. The symmety based nature of the findings implies that they are most likely transferable to other cases in which one uses an approximate one-particle method in conjunction with a symmetrical particle-hole correction factor.
A one-electron Schroedinger equation based on special one-electron potentials for atoms is shown to exist that produces orbitals for an arbitrary molecule that are sufficiently accurate to be used without modification to construct single- and multi-determinant wavefunctions. The exact Hamiltonian is used to calculate the energy variationally and to generate configuration interaction expansions. Earlier work on equilibrium geometries is extended to larger basis sets and molecular dissociation. For a test set of molecules representing different bonding environments, a single set of invariant ato…
The advent of ultrashort soft x-ray pulse sources permits the use of established gas phase spectroscopy methods to investigate ultrafast photochemistry in isolated molecules with element and site specificity. In the present study, we simulate excited state wavepacket dynamics of a prototypical process, the ultrafast photodissociation of methyl iodide. Based on the simulation, we calculate time-dependent excited state carbon edge photoelectron and Auger electron spectra. We observe distinct signatures in both types of spectra and show their direct connection to C-I bond dissociation and charge …
We address a molecular dissociation mechanism that is known to occur when a H 2 molecule approaches a catalyst with its molecular axis parallel to the surface. It is found that molecular dissociation is a form of quantum dynamical phase transition associated to an ana- lytic discontinuity of quite unusual nature: the molecule is destabilized by the transition from non-physical virtual states into actual local- ized states. Current description complements our recent results for a molecule approaching the catalyst with its molecular axis perpendicu- lar to the surface. Also, such a description c…
We present a novel specialization of the variational Monte Carlo linear method for the optimization of the recently introduced cluster Jastrow antisymmetric geminal power ansatz, achieving a lower-order polynomial cost scaling than would be possible with a naive application of the linear method and greatly improving optimization performance relative to the previously employed quasi-Newton approach. We test the methodology on highly multi-reference triple-bond stretches, achieving accuracies superior to traditional coupled cluster theory and multi-reference perturbation theory in both the typic…
Self-consistent correlation potentials for H$_2$ and LiH for various inter-atomic separations are obtained within the random phase approximation (RPA) of density functional theory. The RPA correlation potential shows a peak at the bond midpoint, which is an exact feature of the true correlation potential, but lacks another exact feature: the step important to preserve integer charge on the atomic fragments in the dissociation limit. An analysis of the RPA energy functional in terms of fractional charge is given which confirms these observations. We find that the RPA misses the derivative disco…
In this work we show that the molecular chemical bond formation and dissociation in presence of the d-band of a metal catalyst can be described as a Quantum Dynamical Phase Transition (QDPT). This agree with DFT calculations that predict sudden jumps in some observables as the molecule breaks. According to our model this phenomenon emerges because the catalyst provides for a non- Hermitian Hamiltonian. We show that when the molecule approaches the surface, as occurs in the Heyrovsky reaction of H 2, the bonding H 2 orbital has a smooth crossover into a bonding molecular orbital built with the …
We report experimental results on three-dimensional momentum imaging measurements of anions generated via dissociative electron attachment to gaseous formamide. From the momentum images, we analyze the angular and kinetic energy distributions for NH$_2^{-}$, O$^{-}$, and H$^{-}$ fragments and discuss the possible electron attachment and dissociation mechanisms for multiple resonances for two ranges of incident electron energies, from 5.3~eV to 6.8~eV, and from 10.0~eV to 11.5~eV. {\it Ab initio} theoretical results for the angular distributions of the NH$_2^{-}$ anion for $\sim$6~eV incident e…
The object of this study is the kinetic process of solid-liquid first-order phase transition - melting of carbon dioxide CS-I hydrate with various cavity occupation ratios. The work was done within a framework of study on the local structure of water molecules. These include the time depending change of the short-range order at temperatures close to the melting point and comparison with hexagonal ice structure. Using molecular dynamics method, dependencies of the internal energy of the studied systems on the time of heating were found. Jumps in the internal energy of solids in the range at 275…
Monosubstituted nitrotoluenes serve as important model compounds for nitroaromatic energetic molecules such as trinitrotoluene. This work investigates the ultrafast nuclear dynamics of 3- and 4-nitrotoluene radical cations using femtosecond pump-probe measurements and the results of density functional theory calculations. Strong-field adiabatic ionization of 3- and 4-nitrotoluene using 1500 nm, 18 fs pulses produces radical cations in the ground electronic state with distinct coherent vibrational excitations. In both nitrotoluene isomers, a one-photon excitation with the probe pulse results in…
Linear response time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), which builds upon configuration interaction singles (CIS) and TD-Hartree-Fock (TDHF), is the most widely used class of excited state quantum chemistry methods and is often employed to study photochemical processes. This paper studies the behavior of the resulting excited state potential energy surfaces beyond the Coulson-Fisher (CF) point in single bond dissociations, when the optimal reference determinant is spin-polarized. Many excited states exhibit sharp kinks at the CF point, and connect to different dissociation limits via…
In a recent article [Phys. Rev. B 90, 125102 (2014)] we showed that the random phase approximation with exchange (RPAx) gives accurate total energies for a diverse set of systems including the high and low density regime of the homogeneous electron gas, the N$_2$ molecule, and the H$_2$ molecule at dissociation. In this work, we present results for the van der Waals bonded Ar$_2$ and Kr$_2$ dimers and demonstrate that the RPAx gives superior dispersion forces as compared to the RPA. We then show that this improved description is crucial for the bond formation of the Mg$_2$ molecule. In additio…
Hydrogen produced from the photocatalytic splitting of water is one of the reliable alternatives to replace the polluting fossil and the radioactive nuclear fuels. Here, we provide unequivocal evidence for the existence of blue- and red-shifting O$-$H covalent bonds within a single water molecule adsorbed on MgO surface as a result of asymmetric displacement polarizabilities. The adsorbed H-O-H on MgO gives rise to one weaker H-O bond, while the other O-H covalent bond from the same adsorbed water molecule compensates this effect with a stronger bond. The weaker bond (nearest to the surface), …
Structural geometries, formation enthalpies, and dissociation energies of all diatomic and triatomic molecules consisting of the four basic elements C, H, N, and/or O are calculated from the projector augmented wave (PAW) density functional theory (DFT) method with the PBE and optB88-vdW exchange-correlation functionals. The calculations are also extended to two larger molecules NO3 and HNO3, which consist of 4 and 5 atoms, respectively. In total, 82 molecules or isomers are considered in the calculations. The geometric parameters including 42 bond lengths and 15 bond angles of these molecules…

Many chemical reactions involve bond-dissociation. This is also true for reactions at solid surfaces, in which the dissociation step is often limiting but facilitated in comparison to gas phase reaction channels. This work considers hydrogen dissociation. Reliable molecular beam results are available for this reaction at some copper surfaces. Heterogeneous catalysis by copper is simulated. It was investigated in our previous work since it is in many ways a prototype metal presenting a close-packed surface here. These hydrogen molecules are adsorbed at Cu(111) and fixed geometries on the dissoc…
Density matrix embedding theory (DMET) [Phys. Rev. Lett.2012, 109, 186404] has been demonstrated as an efficient wave-function-based embedding method to treat extended systems. Despite its success in many quantum lattice models, the extension of DMET to real chemical systems has been tested only on selected cases. Herein, we introduce the use of the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method as a correlated impurity solver for DMET, leading to a method called CAS-DMET. We test its performance in describing the dissociation of a H-H single bond in a H10 ring model system and an…
Unrestricted DFT methods are typically expected to describe the homolytic dissociation of nonpolar single bonds in neutral species with qualitative accuracy, due to the lack of significant delocalization error. We however find that many widely used density functional approximations fail to describe features along the dissociation curve of the simple H$_2$ molecule. This is not an universal failure of DFT in the sense that many classic functionals like PBE and B3LYP give very reasonable results, as do some more modern methods like MS2. However, some other widely used functionals like B97-D (emp…
Hydrogen dissociation is an unwanted competing pathway if a torsional motion around the C=C double bond in a chiral fluoroethylene derivative, namely (4-methylcyclohexylidene) fluoromethane (4MCF), is to be achieved. We show that the excited state H-dissociation can be drastically diminished on timescales long enough to initiate a torsion around the C=C double bond using the non-resonant dynamic Stark effect. Potential energy curves, dipoles and polarizabilities for the regarded one-dimensional reaction coordinate are calculated within the CASSCF method. The influence of the excitation and the…
Computational studies have shown that one or more positrons can stabilize two repelling atomic anions through the formation of two-center positronic bonds. In the present work, we study the energetic stability of a system containing two positrons and three hydride anions, namely 2\ce{e^+[H^{3-}_3]}. To this aim, we performed a preliminary scan of the potential energy surface of the system with both electrons and positron in a spin singlet state, with a multi-component MP2 method, that was further refined with variational and diffusion Monte Carlo calculations, and confirmed an equilibrium geom…
Löwdin's symmetry dilemma is an ubiquitous issue in approximate quantum chemistry. In the context of Hartree-Fock (HF) theory, the use of Slater determinants with some imposed constraints to preserve symmetries of the exact problem may lead to physically unreasonable potential energy surfaces. On the other hand, lifting these constraints leads to the so-called broken symmetry solutions that usually provide better energetics, at the cost of losing information about good quantum numbers that describe the state of the system. This behavior has been previously extensively studied in the context of…
For the paradigmatic case of H2-dissociation we compare state-of-the-art many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) in the GW approximation and density-functional theory (DFT) in the exact-exchange plus random-phase approximation for the correlation energy (EX+cRPA). For an unbiased comparison and to prevent spurious starting point effects both approaches are iterated to full self-consistency (i.e. sc-RPA and sc-GW). The exchange-correlation diagrams in both approaches are topologically identical, but in sc-RPA they are evaluated with non-interacting and in sc-GW with interacting Green functions. Th…
Recently, Tao and Mo (TM) derived a meta-generalized gradient approximation functional based on a model exchange-correlation hole. In this work, the performance of this functional is assessed on standard test sets, using the 6-311++G(3df,3pd) basis set. These test sets include 223 G3/99 enthalpies of formation, 99 atomization energies, 76 barrier heights, 58 electron affinities, 8 proton affinities, 96 bond lengths, 82 harmonic vibrational frequencies, 10 hydrogen-bonded molecular complexes, and 22 atomic excitation energies. Our calculations show that the TM functional can achieve high accura…
We have investigated the structural dynamics in photoexcited 1,2-diiodotetrafluoroethane molecules (C2F4I2) in the gas phase experimentally using ultrafast electron diffraction and theoretically using FOMO-CASCI excited state dynamics simulations. The molecules are excited by an ultra-violet femtosecond laser pulse to a state characterized by a transition from the iodine 5p orbital to a mixed 5p|| hole and CF2 antibonding orbital, which results in the cleavage of one of the carbon-iodine bonds. We have observed, with sub-Angstrom resolution, the motion of the nuclear wavepacket of the dissocia…
In organic photovoltaics, the mechanism by which free electrons and holes are generated overcoming the Coulomb attraction is a currently much debated topic. To elucidate this mechanism at a molecular level, we carried out a combined electronic structure and quantum dynamical analysis that captures the elementary events from the exciton dissociation to the free carrier generation at polymer/fullerene donor-acceptor heterojunctions. Our calculations show that experimentally observed efficient charge separations can be explained by a combination of two effects: First, the delocalization of charge…
The accurate calculation of the (differential) correlation energy is central to the quantum chemical description of bond-formation and bond-dissociation processes. In order to estimate the quality of single- and multi-reference approaches for this purpose, various diagnostic tools have been developed. In this work, we elaborate on our previous observation [J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 3, 3129 (2012)] that one- and two-orbital-based entanglement measures provide quantitative means for the assessment and classification of electron correlation effects among molecular orbitals. The dissociation behavior o…
In organic photovoltaic (OPV) systems, exciton dissociation and ultrafast charge separation at donor-acceptor heterojunctions both play a key role in controlling the efficiency of the conversion of excitation energy into free charge carriers. In this work, nonadiabatic dynamics simulations based on the quantum-classical Liouville equation, are employed to study the real-time dynamics of exciton dissociation and charge separation at a model donor-acceptor interface. Benchmark comparisons for a variety of low dimensional donor-acceptor chain models are performed to assess the accuracy of the qua…
Electron correlations in molecules can be divided in short range dynamical correlations, long range Van der Waals type interactions and near degeneracy static correlations. In this work we analyze for a one-dimensional model of a two-electron system how these three types of correlations can be incorporated in a simple wave function of restricted functional form consisting of an orbital product multiplied by a single correlation function $f(r_{12})$ depending on the interelectronic distance $r_{12}$. Since the three types of correlations mentioned lead to different signatures in terms of the na…
An effective Hamiltonian is considered for hydrogen bonding between two molecules due to the quantum mechanical interaction between the orbitals of the H-atom and the donor and acceptor atoms in the molecules. The Hamiltonian acts on two diabatic states and has a simple chemically motivated form for its matrix elements. The model gives insight into the "H-bond puzzle", describes different classes of bonds, and empirical correlations between the donor-acceptor distance R and binding energies, bond lengths, and the softening of vibrational frequencies. A key prediction is the UV photo-dissociati…
Recognized as important interstellar constituents, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been intensively studied in astrochemistry and their spectroscopy, thermodynamics, dynamics, and fragmentations are now amply documented. There exists typical alternatives to the ground-state regular planar structures of PAHs, as long as they bear internal energies in the range 1-10 eV. Resulting from intramolecular rearrangements, such high-lying minima on the potential- energy surfaces should be taken into consideration in the studies of PAH processing in astrophysical conditions. Resting upon DFT…
We present a detailed study of the main dehydrogenation processes of two dibenzopyrene cation (C24H14+) isomers, namely dibenzo(a,e)pyrene (AE+) and dibenzo(a,l)pyrene (AL+). First, action spectroscopy under VUV photons was performed using synchrotron radiation in the 8-20 eV range. We observed lower dissociation thresholds for the non-planar molecule (AL+) than for the planar one (AE+) for the main dissociation pathways: H and 2H/H2 loss. In order to rationalize the experimental results, dissociation paths were investigated by means of density functional theory calculations. In the case of H …

First-principles calculations and analysis of the thermodynamic, structural, and electronic properties of liquid SiO$_2$ characterize the bonded-to-atomic transition at 0.1--1.6 TPa and 10$^4$--10$^5$ K (1--7 eV), the high-energy-density regime relevant to understanding planetary interiors. We find strong ionic bonds that become short-lived due to high kinetics during the transition, with sensitivity of the transition temperature to pressure, and our calculated Hugoniots agree with past experimental data. These results reconcile previous experimental and theoretical findings by clarifying the …
Recently it has been proposed that the positron, the anti-particle analog of the electron, is capable of forming an anti-matter bond in a composite system of two hydride anions and a positron [Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 57, 8859 (2018)]. In order to dig into the nature of this novel bond the newly developed multi-component quantum theory of atoms in molecules is applied to this positronic system. The topological analysis reveals that this species is composed of two atoms in molecules, each containing a proton and half of the electronic and the positronic populations. Further analysis elucidates tha…
We report an unexpectedly strong and complex chemical bonding of rare-gas atoms to neutral gold clusters. The bonding features are consistently reproduced at different levels of approximation within density-functional theory and beyond: from GGA, through hybrid and double-hybrid functionals, up to renormalized second-order perturbation theory. The main finding is that the adsorption of Ar, Kr, and Xe reduces electron-electron repulsion within gold dimer, causing strengthening of the Au-Au bond. Differently from the dimer, the rare-gas adsorption effects on the gold trimer's geometry and vibrat…

Embedded density functional theory (e-DFT) is used to describe the electronic structure of strongly interacting molecular subsystems. We present a general implementation of the Exact Embedding (EE) method [J. Chem. Phys. 133, 084103 (2010)] to calculate the large contributions of the non-additive kinetic potential (NAKP) in such applications. Potential energy curves are computed for the dissociation of Li+-Be, CH3-CF3, and hydrogen-bonded water clusters, and e-DFT results obtained using the EE method are compared with those obtained using approximate kinetic energy functionals. In all cases, t…
While a significant body of investigations have been focused on the process of protein self-assembly, much less is understood about the reverse process of a filament breaking due to thermal motion into smaller fragments, or depolymerization of subunits from the filament ends. Indirect evidence for actin and amyloid filament fragmentation has been reported, although the phenomenon has never been directly observed either experimentally or in simulations. Here we report the direct observation of filament depolymerization and breakup in a minimal, calibrated model of coarse-grained molecular simul…
In this communication we draw attention on serious flaws that plague recently reported antioxidant properties of atorvastatin (ATV) in methanol. First and foremost, we emphasize that the O-H bond dissociation energies (BDE) of about 400\,kcal/mol previously reported are completely wrong. Further, we present results refuting the previous claim that the proton affinity (PA) of ATV is smaller than that of the ascorbic acid. That unfounded claim relies on incorrect data for PA's ascorbic acid (which we correct here) circulated in the literature. Further, we correct the values of the chemical react…
The dissociation energies of four transition metal dimers are determined using diffusion Monte Carlo. The Jastrow, CI, and molecular orbital parameters of the wave function are both partially and fully optimized with respect to the variational energy. The pivotal role is thereby ascribable to the optimization of the molecular orbital parameters of a complete active space wave function in the presence of a Jastrow correlation function. Excellent results are obtained for ZnO, FeO, FeH, and CrS. In addition, potential energy curves are computed for the first three compounds at multi-reference dif…
