We use transient absorption spectroscopy to monitor the ionization and dissociation products following two-photon excitation of pure liquid water. The two decay mechanisms occur with similar yield for an excitation energy of 9.3 eV, whereas the major channel at 8.3 eV is dissociation. The geminate recombination kinetics of the H and OH fragments, which can be followed in the transient absorption probed at 267 nm, provide a window on the dissociation dynamics at the lower excitation energy. Modeling the OH geminate recombination indicates that the dissociating H atoms have enough kinetic energy to escape the solvent cage and one or two additional solvent shells. The average initial separation of H and OH fragments is 0.7+-0.2 nm. Our observation suggests that the hydrogen bonding environment does not prevent direct dissociation of an O-H bond in the excited state. We discuss the implications of our measurement for the excited state dynamics of liquid water and explore the role of those dynamics in the ionization mechanism at low excitation energies.
We demonstrate that, rather than resorting to high-cost dynamic correlation methods, qualitative failures in excited-state potential energy surface predictions can often be remedied at no additional cost by ensuring that optimal molecular orbitals are used for each individual excited state. This approach also avoids the weighting choices required by state-averaging and dynamic weighting and obviates their need for expensive wave function response calculations when relaxing excited state geometries. Although multi-state approaches are of course preferred near conical intersections, other featur…
State-by-state cross sections for dissociative electron attachment and electron-impact dissociation for molecular oxygen are computed using ab initio resonance curves calculated with the R-matrix method. When O2 is in its vibrational ground state, the main contribution for both processes comes from the $^2Π_u$ resonance state of $O_2^-$ but with a significant contribution from the $^4Σ$ resonant state. Vibrational excitation leads to an increased contribution from the low-lying $^2Π_{g}$ resonance, greatly increased cross sections for both processes, and the threshold moving to lower energies.…
Linear response time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), which builds upon configuration interaction singles (CIS) and TD-Hartree-Fock (TDHF), is the most widely used class of excited state quantum chemistry methods and is often employed to study photochemical processes. This paper studies the behavior of the resulting excited state potential energy surfaces beyond the Coulson-Fisher (CF) point in single bond dissociations, when the optimal reference determinant is spin-polarized. Many excited states exhibit sharp kinks at the CF point, and connect to different dissociation limits via…
We have investigated the structural dynamics in photoexcited 1,2-diiodotetrafluoroethane molecules (C2F4I2) in the gas phase experimentally using ultrafast electron diffraction and theoretically using FOMO-CASCI excited state dynamics simulations. The molecules are excited by an ultra-violet femtosecond laser pulse to a state characterized by a transition from the iodine 5p orbital to a mixed 5p|| hole and CF2 antibonding orbital, which results in the cleavage of one of the carbon-iodine bonds. We have observed, with sub-Angstrom resolution, the motion of the nuclear wavepacket of the dissocia…
Chemiluminescence in 1,2-dioxetane occurs through a thermally activated decomposition reaction into two formaldehyde molecules. Both ground-state and nonadiabatic dynamics (including singlet excited states) of the decomposition reaction have been simulated, starting from the first O-O bond-breaking transition structure. The ground-state dissociation occurs between t = 30 fs and t = 140 fs. The so-called entropic trap leads to frustrated dissociations, postponing the decomposition reaction. Specific geometrical conditions are necessary for the trajectories to escape from the entropic trap and f…
The advent of ultrashort soft x-ray pulse sources permits the use of established gas phase spectroscopy methods to investigate ultrafast photochemistry in isolated molecules with element and site specificity. In the present study, we simulate excited state wavepacket dynamics of a prototypical process, the ultrafast photodissociation of methyl iodide. Based on the simulation, we calculate time-dependent excited state carbon edge photoelectron and Auger electron spectra. We observe distinct signatures in both types of spectra and show their direct connection to C-I bond dissociation and charge …
Electronic structure of HCl+ and HBr+ molecular ions is calculated using the symmetry-adapted-cluster configuration interaction (SAC-CI) method. In this paper, we analyse dipole moments (DM) for a series of low-lying six 2Pi-states and transition dipole moments (TDM for transitions from the ground state X2Pi to the excited 2Pi-series. Behavior of DMs with change of interatomic distances is different for these ions for the excited 2Pi-states in correspondence with different dissociation paths. TDMs reveal the pronounced maxima at the beginning steps of dissociation.
A subset of the highly excited eigenstates of thiophosgene (SCCl$_{2}$) near the dissociation threshold are analyzed using sensitive measures of quantum ergodicity. We find several localized eigenstates, suggesting that the intramolecular vibrational energy flow dynamics is nonstatistical even at such high levels of excitations. The results are consistent with recent observations of sharp spectral features in the stimulated emission spectra of SCCl$_{2}$
Core-excitation of water ice releases many different molecules and ions in the gas phase. Studying these desorbed species and the underlying mechanisms can provide useful information on the effects of X-ray irradiation in ice. We report a detailed study of the X-ray induced desorption of a number of neutral, cationic and anionic species from amorphous solid water. We discuss the desorption mechanisms, and the relative contributions of Auger and secondary electrons (X-ray induced Electron Stimulated Desorption) and initial excitation (\rev{direct desorption}) as well as the role of photochemist…
A heavy-impact vibrational excitation and dissociation model for CO$_2$ is presented. This state-to-state model is based on the Forced Harmonic Oscillator (FHO) theory which is more accurate than current state of the art kinetic models of CO$_2$ based on First Order Perturbation Theory. The first excited triplet state $^{3}$B$_{2}$ of CO$_2$, including its vibrational structure, is considered in our model, and a more consistent approach to CO$_2$ dissociation is also proposed. The model is benchmarked against a few academic 0D cases and compared to decomposition time measurements in a shock tu…
We probe the dynamics of dissociating CS$_2$ molecules across the entire reaction pathway upon excitation. Photoelectron spectroscopy measurements using laboratory-generated femtosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses monitor the competing dissociation, internal conversion, and intersystem crossing dynamics. Dissociation occurs either in the initially excited singlet manifold or, via intersystem crossing, in the triplet manifold. Both product channels are monitored and show that, despite being more rapid, the singlet dissociation is the minor product and that triplet state products dominate the fin…
Hydrogen dissociation is an unwanted competing pathway if a torsional motion around the C=C double bond in a chiral fluoroethylene derivative, namely (4-methylcyclohexylidene) fluoromethane (4MCF), is to be achieved. We show that the excited state H-dissociation can be drastically diminished on timescales long enough to initiate a torsion around the C=C double bond using the non-resonant dynamic Stark effect. Potential energy curves, dipoles and polarizabilities for the regarded one-dimensional reaction coordinate are calculated within the CASSCF method. The influence of the excitation and the…
We applied renormalized singles (RS) in the multireference density functional theory (DFT) to calculate accurate energies of ground and excited states. The multireference DFT approach determines the total energy of the $N$-electron system as the sum of the ($N-2$)-electron energy from a density functional approximation (DFA) and the two-electron addition energies from the particle-particle Tamm-Dancoff approximation (ppTDA), naturally including multireference description. The ppTDA@RS-DFA approach uses the RS Hamiltonian capturing all singles contributions in calculating two-electron addition …
We present a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the 193 nm photolysis of the cyano-ester, methyl cyanoformate (MCF). Specifically, nanosecond time-resolved infrared emission spectroscopy was used to monitor the ro-vibrationally excited photoproducts generated in the photolysis reaction. The signal-to-noise of all time-resolved spectra were enhanced using the recently developed algorithm, spectral reconstruction analysis, which allowed observation of previously obscured minor resonances, and revealed new dissociation channels producing HCN and HNC. Spectral fit analysis of t…
In strong field ionization, the pump pulse not only photoionizes the molecule, but also drives efficient population exchanges between its ionic ground and excited states. In this study, we investigated the population dynamics accompanying strong field molecular photoionization, using angular distribution of dissociative fragments after ionization. Our results reveal that the first and higher order processes of the post-ionization population redistribution mechanism (PPRM) in the ion core can be disentangled and classified by {its} angle-resolved kinetic energy release (KER) spectra. We demonstrat…
Soft x-ray radiation from the sun is responsible for the production of high energy photoelectrons in the D and E regions of the ionosphere, where they deposit most of their ionization energy. The photoelectrons created by this process are the main drivers for dissociation of Nitrogen molecule ($N_2$) below 200 km. The dissociation of N2 is one of main mechanisms of the production of Nitric Oxide (NO), an important minor constituent at these altitudes. In order to estimate the dissociation rate of N2 we need its dissociation cross-sections. The dissociation cross-sections for N2 by photoelectro…
We develop two novel models of the H$_2^+$ molecule and its isotopes from which we assess quantum-mechanically and semi-classically whether the molecule anti-aligns with the field in the first excited electronic state. The results from both models allow us to predict anti-alignment dynamics even for the HD$^+$ isotope, which possesses a permanent dipole moment. The molecule dissociates at angles perpendicular to the field polarization in both the excited and the ground electronic state, as the population is exchanged through a conical intersection. The quantum mechanical dispersion of the init…
The dissociation dynamics of the $\tilde{A}$-state of ammonia have been studied using a resonant multiphoton ionisation probe in a photoelectron spectroscopy experiment. The use of a resonant intermediate in the multiphoton ionisation process changes the ionisation propensity, allowing access to different ion states when compared with equivalent single photon ionisation experiments. Ionisation through the $E'$ $^1$A$_1'$ Rydberg intermediate means we maintain overlap with the ion state for an extended period allowing us to monitor the excited state population for several hundred femtoseconds. …
The rate, selectivity and efficiency of plasma-based conversion processes is strongly affected by nonequilibrium phenomena. High concentrations of vibrationally excited molecules are such a plasma-induced effect. It is frequently assumed that vibrationally excited molecules are important in plasma catalysis because their presence lowers the apparent activation energy of dissociative chemisorption reactions and thus increases the conversion rate. A detailed atomic-level understanding of vibrationally stimulated catalytic reactions in the context of plasma catalysis is however lacking. Here, we …
Wavefunctions restricted to electron pair states are promising models for strongly-correlated systems. Specifically, the pair Coupled Cluster Doubles (pCCD) ansatz allows us to accurately describe bond dissociation processes and heavy-element containing compounds with multiple quasi-degenerate single-particle states. Here, we extend the pCCD method to model excited states using the equation of motion (EOM) formalism. As the cluster operator of pCCD is restricted to electron-pair excitations, EOM-pCCD allows us to target excited electron-pair states only. To model singly excited states within E…
Inelastic low-energy (0--1 eV) collisions of electrons with HeH$^+$ cations are treated theoretically, with a focus on the rovibrational excitation and dissociative recombination (DR) channels. In an application of {\it ab initio} multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT), the description of both processes is based on the Born-Oppenheimer quantum defects. The quantum defects were determined using the R-matrix approach in two different frames of reference: the center-of-charge and the center-of-mass frames. The results obtained in the two reference systems, after implementing the Fano-Jungen st…
We present a time-resolved study of the photodissociation dynamics of OCS after UV-photoexcitation at $λ=237$ nm. OCS molecules ($X\,^1Σ^+$) were primarily excited to the $1\,^1\!A''$ and the $2\,^1\!A'$ Renner-Teller components of the $^1Σ^{-}$ and $^1\!Δ$ states. Dissociation into CO and S fragments was observed through time-delayed strong-field ionisation and imaging of the kinetic energy of the resulting CO$^+$ and S$^+$ fragments by intense $790$ nm laser pulses. Surprisingly, fast oscillations with a period of $\sim100$ fs were observed in the S$^+$ channel of the UV dissociation. Based …

New ab-initio surface hopping simulations of the excited state dynamics of CS$_2$ including spin-orbit coupling are compared to new experimental measurements using a multiphoton ionisation probe in a photoelectron spectroscopy experiment. The calculations highlight the importance of the triplet states even in the very early time dynamics of the dissociation process and allow us to unravel the signatures in the experimental spectrum, linking the observed changes to both electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom within the molecule.
We present state-selective measurements on the NH$_2^{+}$ + H$^{+}$ and NH$^{+}$ + H$^{+}$ + H dissociation channels following single-photon double ionization at 61.5 eV of neutral NH$_{3}$, where the two photoelectrons and two cations are measured in coincidence using 3-D momentum imaging. Three dication electronic states are identified to contribute to the NH$_2^{+}$ + H$^{+}$ dissociation channel, where the excitation in one of the three states undergoes intersystem crossing prior to dissociation, producing a cold NH$_2^+$ fragment. In contrast, the other two states directly dissociate, pro…

The time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) has been broadly used to investigate the excited-state properties of various molecular systems. However, the current TDDFT heavily relies on outcomes from the corresponding ground-state density functional theory (DFT) calculations which may be prone to errors due to the lack of proper treatment in the non-dynamical correlation effects. Recently, thermally-assisted-occupation density functional theory (TAO-DFT) [J.-D. Chai, \textit{J. Chem. Phys.} \textbf{136}, 154104 (2012)], a DFT with fractional orbital occupations, was proposed, explicitl…
D$_2$ molecules, excited by linearly cross-polarized femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and near-infrared (NIR) light pulses, reveal highly structured D$^+$ ion fragment momenta and angular distributions that originate from two different 4-step dissociative ionization pathways after four photon absorption (1 XUV + 3 NIR). We show that, even for very low dissociation kinetic energy release $\le$~240~meV, specific electronic excitation pathways can be identified and isolated in the final ion momentum distributions. With the aid of {\it ab initio} electronic structure and time-dependent Schröd…
The pair coupled cluster doubles (pCCD) method (where the excitation manifold is restricted to electron pairs) has a series of interesting features. Among others, it provides ground-state energies very close to what is obtained with doubly-occupied configuration interaction (DOCI), but with polynomial cost (compared with the exponential cost of the latter). Here, we address whether this similarity holds for excited states, by exploring the symmetric dissociation of the linear \ce{H4} molecule. When ground-state Hartree-Fock (HF) orbitals are employed, pCCD and DOCI excited-state energies do no…
Absorption cross-sections for the 5th and 6th vibrational overtones in a series of short chained alcohols using incoherent broadband cavity enhanced-absorption spectroscopy (IBBCEAS)
Accurately describing excited states within Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory (DFT), particularly those which induce ionization and charge transfer, remains a great challenge. Common exchange-correlation (xc) approximations are unreliable for excited states owing, in part, to the absence of a derivative discontinuity in the xc energy ($Δ$), which relates a many-electron energy difference to the corresponding KS energy difference. We demonstrate, analytically and numerically, how the relationship between KS and many-electron energies leads to the step structures observed in the exact xc …
