We demonstrate a new technique for measuring the absolute frequencies of atomic transitions. The technique uses a ring-cavity resonator whose length is calibrated using a reference laser locked to the D_2 line in {87}Rb. The frequency of this line is known to be 384 230 484.468(10) MHz. Using a second laser locked to the D_1 line of Rb, we measure the frequencies of various hyperfine transitions in the D_1 and D_2 lines with a precision of 30 kHz. We obtain the following values: 120.687(17) MHz and 406.520(25) MHz for the 5P_{1/2} hyperfine constant A in {85}Rb and {87}Rb; 377 107 385.623(50) MHz and 377 107 463.209(50) MHz for the D_1 line in {85}Rb and {87}Rb; and 384 230 406.528(50) MHz for the D_2 line in {85}Rb. This yields the fine-structure interval and the isotope shifts. The precision obtained is a significant improvement over previous measurements.
We perform accurate calculations of energy levels as well as fine and hyperfine splittings of the lowest $^{1,3}\!P_J$, $^{3}\!S_1$, $^{3}\!P^e_J$, and $^{1,3}\!D_J$ excited states of the $^9$Be atom using explicitly correlated Gaussian functions and report on the breakdown of the standard hyperfine structure theory. Because of the strong hyperfine mixing, which prevents the use of common hyperfine constants, we formulate a description of the fine and hyperfine structure that is valid for an arbitrary coupling strength and may have wide applications in many other atomic systems.
Accurate calculations of the fine and hyperfine splitting of the 2P state in Li and Be$^+$ isotopes using the explicitly correlated Hylleraas basis set are presented. Theoretical predictions including the mixing of $P_{1/2}$ and $P_{3/2}$ states, relativistic and quantum electrodynamics effects on hyperfine interactions, are compared with experimental values. It is concluded that precise spectroscopic determination of the nuclear magnetic moments requires elimination of nuclear structure effects by combining measurements for two different states.
NRQED approach to the fine and hyperfine structure corrections of order m$α$ 6 and m$α$ 6 (m/M)-Application to the hydrogen atom The NRQED approach is applied to the calculation of relativistic corrections to the fine and hyperfine structure of hydrogenlike atoms at orders m$α$ 6 and m$α$ 6 (m/M). Results are found to be in agreement with those of the relativistic theory. This confirms that the derived NRQED effective potentials are correct, and may be used for studying more complex atoms or molecules. Furthermore, we verify the equivalence between different forms of the NRQED Lagrangian used …
Precision calculations of the fine and hyperfine structure of muonic atoms are performed in a relativistic approach and results for muonic 205 Bi, 147 Sm, and 89 Zr are presented. The hyperfine structure due to magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole splitting is calculated in first order perturbation theory, using extended nuclear charge and current distributions. The leading correction from quantum electrodynamics, namely vacuum polarization in Uehling approximation, is included as a potential directly in the Dirac equation. Also, an effective screening potential due to the surrounding elect…
The present work determines the precise values of magic wavelengths corresponding to the clock transitions 5$^2S$-4$^2D$ of Y$^{2+}$ ion both at the levels of fine- and hyperfine-structures due to the external light beams having linear as well as circular polarization. To calculate the dynamic polarizabilities of the associated states of the transitions, we employ the sum-over-states technique, where the dominating and correlation sensitive part of the sum is evaluated using a highly correlated relativistic coupled-cluster theory. The estimated magic wavelengths of the light beams have substan…
We demonstrate a technique for precisely measuring hyperfine intervals in alkali atoms. The atoms form a three-level $Λ$ system in the presence of a strong control laser and a weak probe laser. The dressed states created by the control laser show significant linewidth reduction. We have developed a technique for Doppler-free spectroscopy that enables the separation between the dressed states to be measured with high accuracy even in room-temperature atoms. The states go through an avoided crossing as the detuning of the control laser is changed from positive to negative. By studying the separa…
This work is an ab initio study of the 2p3 4So_3/2, and 2Do_{3/2,5/2} states of C- and 2p2 3P_{0,1,2}, 1D_2, and 1S_0 states of neutral carbon. We use the multi-configuration Hartree-Fock approach, focusing on the accuracy of the wave function itself. We obtain all C- detachment thresholds, including correlation effects to about 0.5%. Isotope shifts and hyperfine structures are calculated. The achieved accuracy of the latter is of the order of 0.1 MHz. Intra-configuration transition probabilities are also estimated.
We report a precise measurement of hyperfine structure in the $ \rm {3\,S_{1/2}} $ state of the odd isotope of Li, namely $ \rm {^7Li} $. The state is excited from the ground $ \rm {2\,S_{1/2}} $ state (which has the same parity) using two single-photon transitions via the intermediate $ \rm {2\,P_{3/2}} $ state. The value of the hyperfine constant we measure is $ A = 93.095(52)$ MHz, which resolves two discrepant values reported in the literature measured using other techniques. Our value is also consistent with theoretical calculations.
We demonstrate a technique to measure hyperfine structure using a frequency-stabilized diode laser and an acousto-optic modulator locked to the frequency difference between two hyperfine peaks. We use this technique to measure hyperfine intervals in the $5P_{3/2}$ state of $^{85}$Rb and obtain a precision of 20 kHz. We extract values for the magnetic-dipole coupling constant $A=25.038(5)$ MHz and the electric-quadrupole coupling constant $B=26.011(22)$ MHz. These values are a significant improvement over previous results.
We show that the relative effect of variation of the fine structure constant in microwave transitions between very close and narrow rotational-hyperfine levels may be enhanced 2-3 orders of magnitude in diatomic molecules like LaS, LaO, LuS, YbF, etc. The enhancement is a result of cancellation between the hyperfine and rotational intervals.
Longstanding problems in the comparison of very accurate hyperfine-shift measurements to theory were partly overcome by precise measurements on few-electron highly-charged ions. Still the agreement between theory and experiment is unsatisfactory. In this paper, we present a radically new way of precisely measuring hyperfine shifts, and demonstrate its effectiveness in the case of the hyperfine shift of $4s\_{1/2}$ and $4p\_{1/2}$ in $^{207}\mathrm{Pb}^{53+}$. It is based on the precise detection of dielectronic resonances that occur in electron-ion recombination at very low energy. This allows…
By solving the two-body Schordinger equation in a very high precise nonperturbative numerical (NPnum) way, we reexamine the contributions of fine, hyperfine structure splittings of muonic hydrogen based on the Breit potential. The comparison of our results with those by the first order perturbative theory ($^{1st}$PT) in the literature shows, when the structure of proton is considered, the differences between the results by the $^{1st}$PT and NPnum methods are small for the fine and hyperfine splitting of $2P$ state, while are about $-0.009$ meV and $0.08$ meV for the $F=1$ and total hyperfine…
We report a precise measurement of the hyperfine interval in the ${2P}_{1/2}$ state of $^{7}$Li. The transition from the ground state ($D_1$ line) is accessed using a diode laser and the technique of saturated-absorption spectroscopy in hot Li vapor. The interval is measured by locking an acousto-optic modulator to the frequency difference between the two hyperfine peaks. The measured interval of 92.040(6)~MHz is consistent with an earlier measurement reported by us using an atomic-beam spectrometer [Das and Natarajan, J.\ Phys.\ B {\bf 41}, 035001 (2008)]. The interval yields the magnetic dip…
In the framework of the quasipotential method in quantum electrodynamics we calculate corrections to the nuclear structure proportional to $r_N^2$ from two-photon exchange amplitudes in the fine and hyperfine structure of P-states in muonic hydrogen, as well as the photon-photon interaction amplitudes, leading to the exchange of the axial vector meson. In constructing the quasipotential of the muon-nucleus interaction, we use the method of projection operators on states of two particles with a definite spin and total angular momentum. Analytical calculation of the matrix elements is performed …

We demonstrate a technique for directly measuring the fine-structure interval in alkali atoms using two frequency-stabilized diode lasers. Each laser has a linewidth of order 1 MHz and precise tunability: one laser is tuned to a hyperfine transition in the D_1 line, and the other laser to a hyperfine transition in the D_2 line. The outputs of the lasers are fed into a scanning Michelson interferometer that measures the ratio of their wavelengths accurately. To illustrate the technique, we measure the fine-structure interval in Rb, and obtain a value of 237.6000(3)(5) cm^-1 for the hyperfine-fr…
We measure hyperfine structure in the metastable ${^3P}_2$ state of $^{173}$Yb and extract the nuclear magnetic octupole moment. We populate the state using dipole-allowed transitions through the ${^3P}_1$ and ${^3S}_1$ states. We measure frequencies of hyperfine transitions of the ${^3P}_2 \rightarrow {^3S}_1$ line at 770 nm using a Rb-stabilized ring cavity resonator with a precision of 200 kHz. Second-order corrections due to perturbations from the nearby ${^3P}_1$ and ${^1P}_1$ states are below 30 kHz. We obtain the hyperfine coefficients as: $A=-742.11(2)$ MHz, $B=1339.2(2)$ MHz, which re…
The combined fine and hyperfine structure of the $2^3P$ states in $^3$He is calculated within the framework of nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics. The calculation accounts for the effects of order $mα^6$ and increases the accuracy of theoretical predictions by an order of magnitude. The results obtained are in good agreement with recent spectroscopic measurements in $^3$He.
We have applied an optical method to the measurement of the 2S hyperfine interval in atomic hydrogen. The interval has been measured by means of two-photon spectroscopy of the 1S-2S transition on a hydrogen atomic beam shielded from external magnetic fields. The measured value of the 2S hyperfine interval is equal to 177 556 860(15) Hz and represents the most precise measurement of this interval to date. The theoretical evaluation of the specific combination of 1S and 2S hyperfine intervals D_21 is in moderately good agreement with the value for D_21 deduced from our measurement.
We derive an expression for the magnetic blackbody shift of hyperfine transitions such as the cesium primary reference transition which defines the second. The shift is found to be a complicated function of temperature, and has a T^2 dependence only in the high-temperature limit. We also calculate the shift of ground-state p_1/2 hyperfine transitions which have been proposed as new atomic clock transitions. In this case interaction with the p_3/2 fine-structure multiplet may be the dominant effect.
We identify a potential means to extract the $^{229g}$Th $\rightarrow$ $^{229m}$Th nuclear excitation energy from precision microwave spectroscopy of the $5F_{5/2,7/2}$ hyperfine manifolds in the ion $^{229g}$Th$^{3+}$. The hyperfine interaction mixes this ground fine structure doublet with states of the nuclear isomer, introducing small but observable shifts to the hyperfine sub-levels. We demonstrate how accurate atomic structure calculations may be combined with measurement of the hyperfine intervals to quantify the effects of this mixing. Further knowledge of the magnetic dipole decay rate…
The unusually large hyperfine structure splittings in the 23P state of the 3He isotope is measured using electro-optic techniques with high precision laser spectroscopy. Originally designed to probe the fine structure of the 4He atom, this experimental setup along with special modifications I implemented to resolve certain 3He related issues has made possible new high precision hyperfine structure measurements. Discussed are the details of the experimental setup and the modifications, including in depth information necessary to consider while performing these measurements. The results of these…
The largest contributions to the $n=2$ Lamb-shift, fine structure interval and $2s$ hyperfine structure of muonic hydrogen are calculated by exact numerical evaluations of the Dirac equation, rather than by a perturbation expansion in powers of $1/c$, in the framework of non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics. Previous calculations and the validity of the perturbation expansion for light elements are confirmed. The dependence of the various effects on the nuclear size and model are studied
The spectra emitted by a thulium hollow-cathode discharge lamp with argon or neon as inert gases have been recorded with a Bruker IFS 125 HR Fourier Transform spectrometer in the visible wavelength region from 400 nm to 700 nm. The paper presents the investigation of the hyperfine-structure splitting of 50 spectral lines of neutral thulium. As a result, the magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constant A for 20 fine structure levels of Tm I have been determined for the first time.
We demonstrate a technique for frequency measurements of UV transitions with sub-MHz precision. The frequency is measured using a ring-cavity resonator whose length is calibrated against a reference laser locked to the $D_2$ line of $^{87}$Rb. We have used this to measure the 398.8 nm ${^1S}_0 \leftrightarrow {^1P}_1$ line of atomic Yb. We report isotope shifts of all the seven stable isotopes, including the rarest isotope $^{168}$Yb. We have been able to resolve the overlapping $^{173}$Yb($F = 3/2$) and $^{172}$Yb transitions for the first time. We also obtain high-precision measurements of e…
A method for precise calculation of the energy corrections due to second order electric quadrupole interactions, as well as mixed electric quadrupole-vacuum polarization in the framework of the dynamic hyperfine structure in heavy muonic atoms is presented. For this, a multipole expansion of the Uehling potential is performed. The approach is applicable for an arbitrary nuclear electric charge distribution. By performing these calculations for muonic Rhenium and Uranium using a deformed Fermi distribution, it is shown that both corrections contribute on a level presumably visible in upcoming e…
The ground state hyperfine splitting of positronium, $Δ_{\mathrm{HFS}}$, is sensitive to high order corrections of QED. A new calculation up to $\mathrm{O}(α^3 \ln α)$ has revealed a $3.9σ$ discrepancy between the QED prediction and the experimental results. This discrepancy might either be due to systematic problems in the previous experiments or to contributions beyond the Standard Model. We propose an experiment to measure $Δ_{\mathrm{HFS}}$ employing new methods designed to remedy the systematic errors which may have affected the previous experiments. Our experiment will provide an indepen…
This work presents precise calculations of important electromagnetic transition amplitudes along with detail of their many-body correlations using relativistic coupled cluster method. Studies of hyperfine interaction constants, useful for plasma diagnostic, with this correlation exhaustive many-body approach are another important area of this work. The calculated oscillator strengths of allowed transitions, amplitudes of forbidden transitions and lifetimes are compared with the other theoretical results wherever available and they show a good agreement. Hyperfine constants of different isotope…
The hyperfine structures of the $2\,^3\!S_1$ and $2\,^3\!P_J$ states of the $^7$Be$^{2+}$ and $^9$Be$^{2+}$ ions are investigated within the framework of the nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics (NRQED). The uncertainties of present hyperfine splitting results of $^9$Be$^{2+}$ are in the order of several tens of ppm, where two orders of magnitude improvement over the previous theory and experiment values has been achieved. The contribution of nuclear electric quadrupole moment to hyperfine splitting of $^7$Be$^{2+}$ has been studied. A scheme for determining the properties of Be nuclei in t…

We analyze second-order $M1$-$M1$ and $M1$-$E2$ effects to the hyperfine structure (HFS) of the lowest energy $P$ states of alkali-metal atoms arising from the coupling of the two ($J=1/2,3/2$) fine-structure levels through the hyperfine interaction. We find these effects to be especially sizable in Li, leading to a $9σ$ correction to the most accurate reported experimental value of the $A(P_{1/2})$ HFS constant of $^7$Li [D. Das and V. Natarajan, J. Phys. B \textbf{41}, 035001 (2008)]. For the remaining alkali-metal systems, the results tabulated within may be referenced as higher precision i…
The odd isotopologues of ytterbium monohydroxide, $^{171,173}$YbOH, have been identified as promising molecules in which to measure parity (P) and time reversal (T) violating physics. Here we characterize the $\tilde{A}^{2}Π_{1/2}(0,0,0)-\tilde{X}^2Σ^+(0,0,0)$ band near 577 nm for these odd isotopologues. Both laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) excitation spectra of a supersonic molecular beam sample and absorption spectra of a cryogenic buffer-gas cooled sample were recorded. Additionally, a novel spectroscopic technique based on laser-enhanced chemical reactions is demonstrated and utilized in…
The rotational and hyperfine spectrum of the $X^1Σ^+ \rightarrow B^3Π_1$ transition in TlF molecules was measured using laser-induced fluorescence from both a thermal and a cryogenic molecular beam. Rotational and hyperfine constants for the $B$ state are obtained. The large magnetic hyperfine interaction of the Tl nuclear spin leads to significant mixing of the lowest $B$ state rotational levels. Updated, more precise measurements of the $B\rightarrow X$ vibrational branching fractions are also presented. The combined rovibrational branching fractions allow for the prediction of the number of…
In this study, we investigated the hyperfine structure of 43 spectral lines of atomic thulium. We analyzed Fourier-transform spectra in the wavelength range from 700 nm to 2250 nm, which corresponds to the wavenumber range from 14300 cm-1 to 4440 cm-1, respectively. The excited thulium atoms were generated in a hollow-cathode lamp. As a result of this investigation, the magnetic-dipole hyperfine constant A of 17 fine structure levels have been determined experimentally, 14 of them for the first time. The magnetic-dipole hyperfine constant values of the three remaining levels, reported in the l…
We have measured the frequency splitting between the $(2S, F=1/2)$ and $(2S, F=3/2)$ hyperfine sublevels in atomic deuterium by an optical differential method based on two-photon Doppler-free spectroscopy on a cold atomic beam. The result $f_{\rm HFS}^{(D)}(2S)= 40 924 454(7)$ Hz is the most precise value for this interval to date. In comparison to the previous radio-frequency measurement we have improved the accuracy by the factor of three. The specific combination of hyperfine frequency intervals for metastable- and ground states in deuterium atom $D_{21}=8f_{\rm HFS}^{(D)}(2S)-f_{\rm HFS}^{…
A hydrogen-like atom consisting of a positive muon and an electron is known as muonium. It is a near-ideal two-body system for a precision test of bound-state theory and fundamental symmetries. The MuSEUM collaboration performed a new precision measurement of the muonium ground-state hyperfine structure at J-PARC using a high-intensity pulsed muon beam and a high-rate capable positron counter. The resonance of hyperfine transition was successfully observed at a near-zero magnetic field, and the muonium hyperfine structure interval of $ν_{\text{HFS}}$ = 4.463302(4) GHz was obtained with a relat…
The hyperfine structure of the long-lived $5D_{3/2}$ and $5D_{5/2}$ levels of Ba$^+$ ion is analyzed. A procedure for extracting relatively unexplored nuclear magnetic moments $Ω$ is presented. The relevant electronic matrix elements are computed in the framework of the ab initio relativistic many-body perturbation theory. Both the first- and the second-order (in the hyperfine interaction) corrections to the energy levels are analyzed. It is shown that a simultaneous measurement of the hyperfine structure of the entire $5D_J$ fine-structure manifold allows one to extract $Ω$ without contaminat…
We report on preliminary results from a systematic study of the hyperfine (HF) structure of antiprotonic helium. This precise measurement which was commenced in 2006, has now been completed. Our initial analysis shows no apparent density or power dependence and therefore the results can be averaged. The statistical error of the observable M1 transitions is a factor of 60 smaller than that of three body quantum electrodynamic (QED) calculations, while their difference has been resolved to a precision comparable to theory (a factor of 10 better than our first measurement). This difference is sen…
Hyperfine-induced electric dipole contributions may significantly increase probabilities of otherwise very weak electric octupole and magnetic quadrupole atomic clock transitions (e.g. transitions between $s$ and $f$ electron orbitals). These transitions can be used for exceptionally accurate atomic clocks, quantum information processing and search for dark matter. They are very sensitive to new physics beyond the Standard Model, such as temporal variation of the fine structure constant, the Lorentz invariance and Einstein equivalence principle violation. We formulate conditions under which th…
Positronium is an ideal system for the research of the quantum electrodynamics (QED) in bound state. The hyperfine splitting (HFS) of positronium, $Δ_{\mathrm{HFS}}$, gives a good test of the bound state calculations and probes new physics beyond the Standard Model. A new method of QED calculations has revealed the discrepancy by 15\,ppm (3.9$σ$) of $Δ_{\mathrm{HFS}}$ between the QED prediction and the experimental average. There would be possibility of new physics or common systematic uncertainties in the previous all experiments. We describe a new experiment to reduce possible systematic unc…
Hyperfine quenching rates of the lowest-energy metastable $^3P_0$ and $^3P_2$ states of Mg, Ca, Sr, and Yb atoms are computed. The calculations are carried out using ab initio relativistic many-body methods. The computed lifetimes may be useful for designing novel ultra-precise optical clocks and trapping experiments with the $3P_2$ fermionic isotopes. The resulting natural widths of the $^3P_0 -> ^1S_0$ clock transition are 0.44 mHz for $^{25}$Mg, 2.2 mHz for $^{43}$Ca, 7.6 mHz for $^{87}$Sr, 43.5 mHz for $^{171}$Yb, and 38.5 mHz for $^{173}$Yb. Compared to the bosonic isotopes, the lifetime …
The hyperfine structure of 5snd ^1D_2 states in ^{87}Sr was studied for principal quantum numbers 11 <= n <= 25 by Doppler-free two-photon excitation combined with thermionic detection. Based on the more accurate data, compared to previous results, the hyperfine structure was analysed by second order perturbation theory using MQDT wavefunctions. As a result we find that the surprisingly large B-factors obtained by fitting the data with the Casimir formula do not reflect a quadrupolar interaction but rather consist predominantly of second order magnetic dipole contributions. Further, inconsiste…
A measurement of the hyperfine coefficients and isotope shifts for the Dy I 421.291 nm transition [$4f^{10}6s^2 (J=8)\to4f^{10}6s6p (J=9)$] using atomic beam laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy is presented. A King Plot analysis is performed to determine a specific mass shift of $δν_{sms}^{164-162}=11(7)$ Hz for the 421-nm transition, confirming the pure $4f^{10}6s6p$ configuration of the excited state. This transition is currently being explored for laser cooling of an atomic beam of dysprosium used in a search for a temporal variation of the fine-structure constant.
The fully relativistic theory of the Zeeman splitting of the $1s$ hyperfine structure levels in hydrogenlike ions is considered for the magnetic field magnitude in the range from 1 to 10 T. The second-order corrections to the Breit -- Rabi formula are calculated and discussed. The results can be used for a precise determination of nuclear magnetic moments from $g$ factor experiments.
We present interferometeric measurements of the $f=1$ to $f=2$ inter-hyperfine scattering lengths in a single-domain spinor Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{87}$Rb. The inter-hyperfine interaction leads to a strong and state-dependent modification of the spin-mixing dynamics with respect to a non-interacting description. We employ hyperfine-specific Faraday-rotation probing to reveal the evolution of the transverse magnetization in each hyperfine manifold for different state preparations, and a comagnetometer strategy to cancel laboratory magnetic noise. The method allows precise determination o…
We have performed calculations of the size of the frequency shift induced by a static electric field on the clock transition frequencies of the hyperfine splitting in Yb+, Rb, Cs, Ba+, and Hg+. The calculations are used to find the frequency shifts due to blackbody radiation which are needed for accurate frequency measurements and improvements of the limits on variation of the fine structure constant, alpha. Our result for Cs (delta nu E^2=-2.26 times 10^{-10}Hz/(V/m)^2) is in good agreement with early measurements and ab initio calculations. We present arguments against recent claims that the…
We make precise calculation of hyperfine structure of $S$-states in muonic ions of lithium, beryllium and boron in quantum electrodynamics. Corrections of orders $α^5$ and $α^6$ due to the vacuum polarization, nuclear structure and recoil in first and second orders of perturbation theory are taken into account. We obtain estimates of the total values of hyperfine splittings which can be used for a comparison with future experimental data.
Two anomalously weak transitions within the $2 ^3{\rm S}_1~-~3 ^3{\rm P}_J$ manifolds in $^3$He have been identified. Their transition strengths are measured to be 1,000 times weaker than that of the strongest transition in the same group. This dramatic suppression of transition strengths is due to the dominance of the hyperfine interaction over the fine structure interaction. An alternative selection rule based on \textit{IS}-coupling (where the nuclear spin is first coupled to the total electron spin) is proposed. This provides qualitative understanding of the transition strengths. It is sho…
Numerous few-electron atomic systems are considered which can be used effectively for observing a potential variation of the fine-structure constant $α$ and the electron-proton mass ratio $m_e/m_p$. We examine optical magnetic dipole transitions between hyperfine-structure components in heavy highly charged H-like and Li-like ions with observably high sensitivity to a variation of $α$ and $m_e/m_p$. The experimental spectra of the proposed systems consist of a strong single line, which simplifies significantly the data analysis and shortens the necessary measurement time. Furthermore, we propo…
The contribution from the axial-vector meson exchange to the potential of the muon-proton interaction in muonic hydrogen induced by anomalous axial-vector meson coupling to two photon state is calculated. It is shown that such contribution to the hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen is large and important for a comparison with precise experimental data. In the light of our result, the proton radius "puzzle" is discussed.
The ground state hyperfine splitting of light muon-electron ions of lithium, beryllium, boron and helium is calculated on the basis of analytical perturbation theory in terms of small parameters of the fine structure constant and electron-muon mass ratio. The corrections of vacuum polarization, nuclear structure and recoil effects and electron vertex corrections are taken into account. The dependence of the corrections on the nucleus charge Z is studied. The obtained total values of hyperfine splitting intervals can be used for comparison with future experimental data.
We present a precise determination of the polarizability and other proton structure dependent contributions to the hydrogen hyperfine splitting, based heavily on the most recent published data on proton spin dependent structure functions from the EG1 experiment at the Jefferson Laboratory. As a result, the total calculated hyperfine splitting now has a standard deviation slightly under 1 part-per-million, and is about 1 standard deviation away from the measured value. We also present results for muonic hydrogen hyperfine splitting, taking care to ensure the compatibility of the recoil and pola…
The recoil, vacuum polarization and electron vertex corrections of first and second orders in the fine structure constant $α$ and the ratio of electron to muon and electron to α-particle masses are calculated in the hyperfine splitting of the $1s^{(e)}_{1/2}2s^{(μ)}_{1/2}$ state of muonic helium atom (μe ^4_2He) on the basis of a perturbation theory. We obtain total result for the muonically excited state hyperfine splitting $Δν^{hfs}=4295.66$ MHz which improves previous calculations due to the account of new corrections and more accurate treatment of the electron vertex contribution.
Interference between different energy eigenstates in a quantum system results in an oscillation with a frequency which is proportional to the difference in energy between the states. Such an oscillation is observable in polarized positronium when it is placed in a magnetic field. In order to measure the hyperfine splitting of positronium, we perform the precise measurement of this oscillation using a high quality superconducting magnet and fast photon-detectors. A result of $203.324 \pm 0.039\rm{~(stat.)} \pm 0.015\rm{(~sys.)}$~GHz is obtained which is consistent with both theoretical calculat…
We report calculations designed to assess the ultimate precision of an atomic clock based on the 578 nm $6 ^1S_0 --> 6 ^3P^o_0$ transition in Yb atoms confined in an optical lattice trap. We find that this transition has a natural linewidth less than 10 mHz in the odd Yb isotopes, caused by hyperfine coupling. The shift in this transition due to the trapping light acting through the lowest order AC polarizability is found to become zero at the magic trap wavelength of about 752 nm. The effects of Rayleigh scattering, higher-order polarizabilities, vector polarizability, and hyperfine induced e…
