Direct measurement of the fine-structure interval in alkali atoms using diode lasers

We demonstrate a technique for directly measuring the fine-structure interval in alkali atoms using two frequency-stabilized diode lasers. Each laser has a linewidth of order 1 MHz and precise tunability: one laser is tuned to a hyperfine transition in the D_1 line, and the other laser to a hyperfine transition in the D_2 line. The outputs of the lasers are fed into a scanning Michelson interferometer that measures the ratio of their wavelengths accurately. To illustrate the technique, we measure the fine-structure interval in Rb, and obtain a value of 237.6000(3)(5) cm^-1 for the hyperfine-free 5P_{3/2} - 5P_{1/2} interval.

Ultralow-power local laser control of the dimer density in alkali-metal vapors through photodesorption

Ultralow-power diode-laser radiation is employed to induce photodesorption of cesium from a partially transparent thin-film cesium adsorbate on a solid surface. Using resonant Raman spectroscopy, we demonstrate that this photodesorption process enables an accurate local optical control of the density of dimer molecules in alkali-metal vapors.

Generation of atomic spin orientation with a linearly polarised beam in room-temperature alkali-metal vapour

Traditionally, atomic spin orientation is achieved by the transfer of angular momentum from polarised light to an atomic system. We demonstrate the mechanism of orientation generation in room-temperature caesium vapours that combines three elements: optical pumping, non-linear spin dynamics and spin-exchange collisions. High-precision measurement of hyperfine structure in the $D$ lines of alkali atoms

We have measured hyperfine structure in the first-excited $P$ state ($D$ lines) of all the naturally-occurring alkali atoms. We use high-resolution laser spectroscopy to resolve hyperfine transitions, and measure intervals by locking the frequency shift produced by an acousto-optic modulator to the difference between two transitions. In most cases, the hyperfine coupling constants derived from our measurements improve previous values significantly.

A single-mode external cavity diode laser using an intra-cavity atomic Faraday filter with short-term linewidth $<400$ kHz and long-term stability of $<1$ MHz

We report on the development of a diode laser system - the `Faraday laser' - using an atomic Faraday filter as the frequency-selective element. Optical clocks based on ultra-narrow three-photon resonances in alkaline earth atoms

A sharp resonance line that appears in three-photon transitions between the $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{0}$ states of alkaline earth and Yb atoms is proposed as an optical frequency standard. This proposal permits the use of the even isotopes, in which the clock transition is narrower than in proposed clocks using the odd isotopes and the energy interval is not affected by external magnetic fields or the polarization of trapping light. Observation of CPT for the ground hyperfine interval in $^{133}$Cs

We use the technique of coherent population trapping (CPT) to access the ground hyperfine interval (clock transition) in $^{133}$Cs. The probe and control beams required for CPT are obtained from a single compact diode laser system. The phase coherence between the beams, whose frequency difference is the clock frequency, is obtained by frequency modulating the laser with an electro-optic modulator (EOM). Hyperfine structure of the metastable 3P2 state of alkaline earth atoms as an accurate probe of nuclear magnetic octupole moments

Measuring the hyperfine structure (HFS) of long-lived $^3P_2$ states of divalent atoms may offer the opportunity of extracting relatively unexplored nuclear magnetic octupole and electric hexadecapole moments. Here, using relativistic many-body methods of atomic structure and the nuclear shell model, we evaluate the effect of these higher nuclear moments on the hyperfine structure. Precise measurement of hyperfine intervals using avoided crossing of dressed states

We demonstrate a technique for precisely measuring hyperfine intervals in alkali atoms. The atoms form a three-level $Λ$ system in the presence of a strong control laser and a weak probe laser. The dressed states created by the control laser show significant linewidth reduction. Hyperfine Paschen-Back regime in alkali metal atoms: consistency of two theoretical considerations and experiment

Simple and efficient "λ-method" and "λ/2-method" (λis the resonant wavelength of laser radiation) based on nanometric-thickness cell filled with rubidium are implemented to study the splitting of hyperfine transitions of 85Rb and 87Rb D_1 line in an external magnetic field in the range of B = 0.5 - 0.7 T. Precise frequency measurements of the D-lines and fine-structure interval in K

We use a diode laser locked to a Rb transition as the frequency reference along with a scanning Michelson interferometer to make precise measurements on the $D_1$ and $D_2$ lines of potassium. The Rb reference frequency is known with sub-MHz accuracy. Analysis of a Cesium lattice optical clock

We propose and analyze a Cesium lattice optical clock (CLOC) which has the potential for high performance and simple operation in a compact form factor using a forbidden optical transition in Cs atoms at 685 nm. Cs atoms are trapped in a 3D optical lattice using a magic trap wavelength of $λ_{\textrm m}=803~\textrm nm$. Precise measurement of hyperfine structure in the ${2P}_{1/2}$ state of $^{7}$Li using saturated-absorption spectroscopy

We report a precise measurement of the hyperfine interval in the ${2P}_{1/2}$ state of $^{7}$Li. The transition from the ground state ($D_1$ line) is accessed using a diode laser and the technique of saturated-absorption spectroscopy in hot Li vapor. The interval is measured by locking an acousto-optic modulator to the frequency difference between the two hyperfine peaks. Precise measurement of hyperfine structure in the $5P_{3/2}$ state of $^{85}$Rb

We demonstrate a technique to measure hyperfine structure using a frequency-stabilized diode laser and an acousto-optic modulator locked to the frequency difference between two hyperfine peaks. We use this technique to measure hyperfine intervals in the $5P_{3/2}$ state of $^{85}$Rb and obtain a precision of 20 kHz. We extract values for the magnetic-dipole coupling constant $A=25.038(5)$ MHz and the electric-quadrupole coupling constant $B=26.011(22)$ MHz. These values are a significant improvement over previous results.
