Interference between different energy eigenstates in a quantum system results in an oscillation with a frequency which is proportional to the difference in energy between the states. Such an oscillation is observable in polarized positronium when it is placed in a magnetic field. In order to measure the hyperfine splitting of positronium, we perform the precise measurement of this oscillation using a high quality superconducting magnet and fast photon-detectors. A result of $203.324 \pm 0.039\rm{~(stat.)} \pm 0.015\rm{(~sys.)}$~GHz is obtained which is consistent with both theoretical calculations and previous precise measurements.
Hyperfine splitting of positronium is an important parameter for particle physics. This paper gives experimental techniques and results of R&D studies of our experiment to observe direct hyperfine transition of ortho-positronium to para-positronium.
We report the first direct measurement of the hyperfine transition of the ground state positronium. The hyperfine structure between ortho-positronium and para-positronium is about 203 GHz. We develop a new optical system to accumulate about 10 kW power using a gyrotron, a mode converter, and a Fabry-Pérot cavity. The hyperfine transition has been observed with a significance of 5.4 standard deviations. The transition probability is measured to be $A = 3.1^{+1.6}_{-1.2} \times 10^{-8}$ s$^{-1}$ for the first time, which is in good agreement with the theoretical value of $3.37 \times 10^{-8}$ s$…
Positronium is an ideal system for the research of the bound state QED. The hyperfine splitting of positronium (Ps-HFS, about 203 GHz) is an important observable but all previous measurements of Ps-HFS had been measured indirectly using Zeeman splitting. There might be the unknown systematic errors on the uniformity of magnetic field. We are trying to measure Ps-HFS directly using sub-THz radiation. We developed an optical system to accumulate high power (about 10 kW) radiation in a Fabry-Pérot resonant cavity and observed the positronium hyperfine transition for the first time.
The single photon annihilation contributions for the positronium ground state hyperfine splitting are calculated analytically to order $m_eα^6$ using NRQED. Based on intuitive physical arguments the same result can also be determined by a trivial calculation using results from existing literature. Our result completes the hyperfine splitting calculation to order $m_eα^6$. We compare the theoretical prediction with the most recent experimental measurement.
Positronium is an ideal system for the research of QED in the bound state. The hyperfine splitting of positronium (Ps-HFS: about 203 GHz) is a good tool to test QED and also sensitive to new physics beyond the Standard Model. Previous experimental results show 3.9\,$σ$ (15 ppm) discrepancy from the QED $\mathrm{O}\left(α^3 \ln{1/α}\right)$ prediction. We point out probable common systematic errors in all previous experiments. I measure the Ps-HFS in two different ways. (1) A prototype run without RF system is described first. (2) I explain a new direct Ps-HFS measurement without static magneti…
We consider hard three-loop nonlogarithmic corrections of order $mα^7$ to hyperfine splitting in positronium. All these contributions are generated by the graphs with photon and/or electron loop radiative insertions in the two-photon exchange diagrams. We calculate contributions of six gauge invariant sets of diagrams. The total result for all these diagrams is $ΔE=-1.2917(1)mα^7/π^3=-5.672$ kHz.
The ground state hyperfine splitting of positronium $Δ_{\mathrm{HFS}}$ is sensitive to high order corrections of quantum electrodynamics (QED) in bound state. The theoretical prediction and the averaged experimental value for $Δ_{\mathrm{HFS}}$ has a discrepancy of 15 ppm, which is equivalent to 3.9 standard deviations (s.d.). A new precision measurement which reduces the systematic uncertainty from the positronium thermalization effect was performed, in which the non-thermalization effect was measured to be as large as $10 \pm 2\,{\mathrm{ppm}}$ in a timing window we used. When this effect is…
We consider hard three-loop corrections to hyperfine splitting in muonium and positronium generated by the diagrams with closed electron loops. There are six gauge-invariant sets of such diagrams that generate corrections of order $mα^7$. The contributions of these diagrams are calculated for an arbitrary electron-muon mass ratio without expansion in the small mass ratio. We obtain the formulae for contributions to hyperfine splitting that in the case of small mass ratio describe corrections for muonium and in the case of equal masses describe corrections for positronium. First few terms of th…
We compute the next-to-leading, O(m alpha^5), contribution to the hyperfine splitting in positronium within the framework of NRQED. When applied to the ground state, our calculation reproduces known results, providing a further test of NRQED techniques. Besides providing a very simple method of calculation of the standard result, we also obtain new expressions for excited states of positronium with negligible additional effort. Our calculation requires the complete next-to-leading matching of the lowest-dimension NRQED four-fermi couplings, which we publish here for the first time.
The ground state hyperfine splitting of positronium, $Δ_{\mathrm{HFS}}$, is sensitive to high order corrections of QED. A new calculation up to $\mathrm{O}(α^3 \ln α)$ has revealed a $3.9σ$ discrepancy between the QED prediction and the experimental results. This discrepancy might either be due to systematic problems in the previous experiments or to contributions beyond the Standard Model. We propose an experiment to measure $Δ_{\mathrm{HFS}}$ employing new methods designed to remedy the systematic errors which may have affected the previous experiments. Our experiment will provide an indepen…
Positronium is an ideal system for the research of the quantum electrodynamics (QED) in bound state. The hyperfine splitting (HFS) of positronium, $Δ_{\mathrm{HFS}}$, gives a good test of the bound state calculations and probes new physics beyond the Standard Model. A new method of QED calculations has revealed the discrepancy by 15\,ppm (3.9$σ$) of $Δ_{\mathrm{HFS}}$ between the QED prediction and the experimental average. There would be possibility of new physics or common systematic uncertainties in the previous all experiments. We describe a new experiment to reduce possible systematic unc…
We present the current status for the direct measurement of the positronium hyperfine structure using the $\text{2}^\text{3}\text{S}_\text{1} \rightarrow \text{2}^\text{1}\text{S}_\text{0}$ transition. This experiment, currently being commissioned at the slow positron beam facility at ETH Zurich, will be the first measurement of this transition and the first positronium hyperfine splitting experiment conducted in vacuum altogether. This experiment will be free of systematic effects found in earlier experiments, namely the inhomogeneity in static magnetic fields and the extrapolation from dense…
We report on the first measurement of the Breit-Wigner resonance of the transition from {\it ortho-}positronium to {\it para-}positronium. We have developed an optical system to accumulate a power of over 20 kW using a frequency-tunable gyrotron and a Fabry-Pérot cavity. This system opens a new era of millimeter-wave spectroscopy, and enables us to directly determine both the hyperfine interval and the decay width of {\it p-}Ps.
An "ultrafine" splitting in positronium between the $L=1$ spin-singlet state and the spin-average of the spin-triplet states is shown to arise only at order $α^6$. The QED prediction for $n=2$ states is $Δ_{2,P}=(683/172800)mα^6=73.7(1.2)$ kHz. This represents the smallest leading-order QED splitting known. Current experimental efforts could observe this splitting, and its observation can constrain new ultralight interactions, such as axions or $Z'$.
In the recent paper by Zhang the order $α^4 R_{\infty}$ corrections to the positronium P levels were reconsidered. Those calculations confirm our corresponding results, except for the contribution due to the squared spin-orbit interaction. We present here a new derivation of our previous result for this last correction, this derivation being to our opinion both simple and convincing.
We present an analytic calculation of the O(m alpha^6) recoil and radiative recoil corrections to energy levels of positronium nS states and their hyperfine splitting. A complete analytic formula valid to O(m alpha^6) is given for the spectrum of S states. Technical aspects of the calculation are discussed in detail. Theoretical predictions are given for various energy intervals and compared with experimental results.
An eight-component formalism is proposed for the relativistic two-fermion problem. In QED, it extends the applicability of the Dirac equation with hyperfine interaction to the positronium case. The use of exact relativistic two-body kinematics entails a CP-invariant spectrum which is symmetric in the total cms energy. It allows the extension of recent α^6 recoil corrections to the positronium case, and implies new recoil corrections to the fine and hyperfine structures and to the Bethe logarithm.
Recent experimental advances in Positronium (Ps) physics have made it possible to produce dense Ps ensembles in which Ps-Ps interactions may occur, leading to the production of Ps$_2$ molecules and paving the way to the realization of a Ps Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). In order to achieve this latter goal it would be advantageous to develop new methods to measure Ps densities in real-time. Here we describe a possible approach to do this using polaritonic methods: using realistic experimental parameters we demonstrate that a dense Ps gas can be strongly coupled to the photonic field of a dist…
We present direct measurements of the hyperfine splitting of Rydberg states in rubidium 87 using Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) spectroscopy in a room-temperature vapour cell. With this method, and in spite of Doppler-broadening, line-widths of 3.7 MHz FWHM, i.e. significantly below the intermediate state natural linewidth are reached. This allows resolving hyperfine splittings for Rydberg s-states with n=20...24. With this method we are able to determine Rydberg state hyperfine splittings with an accuracy of approximately 100 kHz. Ultimately our method allows accuracies of ord…
A rigorous evaluation of the two-photon exchange corrections to the hyperfine structure in lithiumlike heavy ions is presented. As a result, the theoretical accuracy of the specific difference between the hyperfine splitting values of H- and Li-like Bi ions is significantly improved. This opens a possibility for the stringent test of the many-electron QED effects on a few percent level in the strongest electromagnetic field presently available in experiments.
In the last twenty years, the theory of hyperfine splitting in muonium developed without any experimental input. Finally, this situation is changing and a new experiment on measuring hyperfine splitting in muonium is now in progress at J-PARC. The goal of the MuSEUM experiment is to improve by an order of magnitude experimental accuracy of the hyperfine splitting and muon-electron mass ratio. Uncertainty of the theoretical prediction for hyperfine splitting will be crucial for comparison between the forthcoming experimental data and the theory in search of a possible new physics. In the curren…
Positronium is an ideal system for the research of the bound state QED. The hyperfine splitting of positronium (Ps-HFS: about 203 GHz) is sensitive to new physics beyond the Standard Model via a vacuum oscillation between an ortho-Ps and a virtual photon. Previous experimental results of the Ps-HFS show 3.9 sigma(15 ppm) discrepancy from the QED calculation. All previous experiments used an indirect method with static magnetic field to cause Zeeman splitting (a few GHz) between triplet states of ortho-Ps, from which the HFS value was derived. One possible systematic error source of the indirec…
The hyperfine structure splittings are determined for the lowest bound state in the positron-helium ion $e^{+}[^3$He$(2^3S)]$ and $e^{+}[^4$He$(2^3S)]$. In particular, we have fond that for the $e^{+}[{}^3$He$(2^3S)]$ ion one can observe the three following hyperfine structure splittinings: 5824.3986 $MHz$, 76466.5308 $MHz$ and 5824.4019 $MHz$. In the $e^{+}[{}^4$He$(2^3S)]$ ion only one hyperfine structure splitting 82963.0427 $MHz$ can be observed. All these values can be measured in modern experiments.
Three-loop corrections to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the gauge invariant sets of diagrams with muon and tauon loop light-by-light scattering blocks are calculated. These results complete calculations of all light-by-light scattering contributions to hyperfine splitting in muonium.
The one-loop self-energy correction to the hyperfine structure splitting of the 1s and 2s states of hydrogenlike ions is calculated both for the point and finite nucleus. The results of the calculation are combined with other corrections to find the ground state hyperfine splitting in lithiumlike ^{209}Bi^{80+} and ^{165}Ho^{64+}.
Nuclear structure corrections of orders $Zα\, E_F$ and $(Zα)^2 E_F$ are calculated for the hyperfine splitting of the muonic deuterium. The obtained results disagree with previous calculations and lead to a $5\,σ$ disagreement with the current experimental value of the $2S$ hyperfine splitting in $μ$D.
The muon and tauon light-by-light scattering contributions to hyperfine splitting in muonium are calculated. These results conclude calculation of all hard three-loop contributions to hyperfine splitting containing graphs with closed fermion loops. We discuss the special role that the lepton anomalous magnetic moments play in these calculations. The full result for all three-loop radiative-recoil corrections to hyperfine splitting generated by the graphs with closed lepton loops is presented.
The measurement of Cesium (Cs) 7D5/2 excited state's hyperfine splitting intervals and hyperfine-interaction constants has been experimentally investigated based on ladder-type (852 nm + 698 nm) three-level Cs system (6S1/2 - 6P3/2 - 7D5/2) with room-temperature Cs atomic vapor cell. By scanning the 698-nm coupling laser's frequency, the Doppler-free high-resolution electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) assisted double-resonance optical pumping (DROP) spectra have been demonstrated via transmission enhancement of the locked 852-nm probe laser. The EIT-assisted DROP spectra are employe…
The hyperfine structure splittings of the ground states of the $pdμ, ptμ$ and $dtμ$ ions are determined with the use of highly accurate expectation values of the interparticle delta-functions obtained in recent computations. The corresponding hyperfine structure splittings, e.g., $Δ_{12} =$ 1.3400149$\cdot 10^7$ $MHz$ and $Δ_{23} =$ 3.3518984$\cdot 10^7$ $MHz$ for the $ptμ$ ion, can directly be measured in modern experiments.
The ground state hyperfine splitting values and the transition probabilities between the hyperfine structure components of high Z lithiumlike ions are calculated in the range $Z=49-83$. The relativistic, nuclear, QED and interelectronic interaction corrections are taken into account. It is found that the Bohr-Weisskopf effect can be eliminated in a combination of the hyperfine splitting values of the hydrogenlike and lithiumlike ions of an isotope. This gives a possibility for testing the QED effects in a combination of the strong electric and magnetic fields of the heavy nucleus. Using the ex…
We perform accurate calculations of energy levels as well as fine and hyperfine splittings of the lowest $^{1,3}\!P_J$, $^{3}\!S_1$, $^{3}\!P^e_J$, and $^{1,3}\!D_J$ excited states of the $^9$Be atom using explicitly correlated Gaussian functions and report on the breakdown of the standard hyperfine structure theory. Because of the strong hyperfine mixing, which prevents the use of common hyperfine constants, we formulate a description of the fine and hyperfine structure that is valid for an arbitrary coupling strength and may have wide applications in many other atomic systems.
The hyperfine structure splittings are determined for all five bound $S(L = 0)-$states in the three symmetric muonic molecular ions: $ppμ, ddμ$ and $ttμ$. The expectation values of all interparticle delta-functions used in our calculations have been determined in recent highly accurate computations.
The interaction of orbital electrons with the charge and magnetic moment of the nucleus polarizes it, and the detailed description requires a careful treatment of the nuclear vector polarizability. We present a complete and closed form expression for the resulting contribution to hyperfine splitting in light atomic systems.
The rigorous calculation of the vacuum-polarization screening corrections to the hyperfine splitting in Li-like bismuth is presented. The two-electron diagrams with electric and magnetic vacuum-polarization loops are evaluated to all orders in alpha*Z, including the Wichmann-Kroll contributions. This improves the accuracy of the theoretical prediction for the specific difference of the hyperfine splitting values of H- and Li-like bismuth.
Relativistic corrections to the hyperfine splitting are calculated for the triplet $2^3S_1$ state of the helium isotope He$^3$. High precision variational wave functions are employed, where the electron-electron correlations are well accounted for. Due to the unknown nuclear structure a comparison with the experimental result is performed via He$^{3+}$ hyperfine splitting. Surprisingly, the second order contribution due to Fermi interaction, in spite of the additional small factor $m/M$, is very significant.
We calculate radiative corrections to the Lamb shift of order $α^3(Zα)^5m$ and radiative corrections to hyperfine splitting of order $α^3(Zα)E_F$ generated by the diagrams with insertions of radiative photons and electron polarization loops in the graphs with two external photons. We also obtain the radiative-recoil correction to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the diagrams with the $τ$ polarization loop.
We calculate radiative-recoil corrections of order $α^2(Zα)(m/M)E_F$ to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the diagrams with electron and muon polarization loops. These corrections are enhanced by the large logarithm of the electron-muon mass ratio. The leading logarithm cubed and logarithm squared contributions were obtained a long time ago. The single-logarithmic and nonlogarithmic contributions calculated here improve the theory of hyperfine splitting, and affect the value of the electron-muon mass ratio extracted from the experimental data on the muonium hyperfine splitting.
Accurate calculations of the fine and hyperfine splitting of the 2P state in Li and Be$^+$ isotopes using the explicitly correlated Hylleraas basis set are presented. Theoretical predictions including the mixing of $P_{1/2}$ and $P_{3/2}$ states, relativistic and quantum electrodynamics effects on hyperfine interactions, are compared with experimental values. It is concluded that precise spectroscopic determination of the nuclear magnetic moments requires elimination of nuclear structure effects by combining measurements for two different states.
We consider three-loop radiative-recoil corrections to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the gauge invariant set of diagrams with virtual light-by-light scattering block. These corrections are enhanced by the large logarithms of the electron-muon mass ratio. We present the results of an analytic calculation of the single-logarithmic radiative-recoil corrections of order $α^2(Zα)(m/M)E_F$ to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by these diagrams.
We present a precise determination of the polarizability and other proton structure dependent contributions to the hydrogen hyperfine splitting, based heavily on the most recent published data on proton spin dependent structure functions from the EG1 experiment at the Jefferson Laboratory. As a result, the total calculated hyperfine splitting now has a standard deviation slightly under 1 part-per-million, and is about 1 standard deviation away from the measured value. We also present results for muonic hydrogen hyperfine splitting, taking care to ensure the compatibility of the recoil and pola…
Relativistic and QED corrections are calculated for the hyperfine splitting (hfs) in the $2S_{1/2}$ ground state of $^{9}$Be$^+$ ions with an exact account for electronic correlations. The achieved accuracy is sufficient to determine the finite nuclear size effects from the comparison to the experimental hfs value. The obtained results establish the ground to determine the neutron halo in $^{11}$Be.
We present the derivation of the formulas for the proton structure-dependent terms in the hyperfine splitting of muonic hydrogen. We use compatible conventions throughout the calculations to derive a consistent set of formulas that reconcile differences between our results and some specific terms in earlier work. Convention conversion corrections are explicitly presented, which reduce the calculated hyperfine splitting by about 46 ppm. We also note that using only modern fits to the proton elastic form factors gives a smaller than historical spread of Zemach radii and leads to a reduced uncert…
The current status of the determination of corrections to the hyperfine splitting of the ground state in hydrogen is considered. Improved calculations are provided taking into account the most recent value for the proton charge radius. Comparing experimental data with predictions for the hyperfine splitting, the Zemach radius of the proton is deduced to be $1.045(16)$ fm. Employing exponential parametrizations for the electromagnetic form factors we determine the magnetic radius of the proton to be $0.778(29)$ fm. Both values are compared with the corresponding ones derived from the data obtai…
We present the leading-order prediction of baryon chiral perturbation theory for the proton polarizability contribution to the 2S hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen, and compare with the results of dispersive calculations.
The hyperfine structures of the ground states in the ${}^{3}$He$^{2+} μ^{-} e^{-}$ and ${}^{4}$He$^{2+} μ^{-} e^{-}$ helium-muonic atoms are investigated with the use of highly accurate variational wave functions. The differences between corresponding levels of hyperfine structure (i.e. hyperfine splittings) are determined to very high numerical accuracy. In particular, we have found that the hyperfine structure splitting in the ground state of the ${}^{4}$He$^{2+} μ^{-} e^{-}$ atom is $Δν\approx 4464.55454(3)$ $MHz$, while analogous splitting for the ${}^{3}$He$^{2+}μ^{-}e^{-}$ atom is $Δν\ap…
We consider three-loop radiative-recoil corrections to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by diagrams with one-loop radiative photon insertions both in the electron and muon lines. An analytic result for these nonlogarithmic corrections of order $α(Z^2α)(Zα)(m/M)\widetilde E_F$ is obtained. This result constitutes a next step in the implementation of the program of reduction of the theoretical uncertainty of hyperfine splitting below 10 Hz.
The ground-state hyperfine splitting values of high-Z boronlike ions are calculated. Calculation of the interelectronic-interaction contribution is based on a combination of the 1/Z perturbation theory and the large-scale configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method. The screened QED corrections are evaluated utilizing an effective screening potential approach. Total hyperfine splitting energies are presented for several B-like ions of particular interest: {}^{45}Sc{}^{16+}, {}^{57}Fe{}^{21+}, {}^{207}Pb{}^{77+}, and {}^{209}Bi{}^{78+}. For lead and bismuth the experimental values of the …
The hyperfine splitting in hydrogenlike $^{209}$Bi, $^{203}$Tl, and $^{205}$Tl is calculated with the nuclear magnetization determined from experimental data on the hyperfine splitting in the corresponding muonic atoms. The single-particle and configuration-mixing nuclear models are considered. The QED corrections are taken into account for both electronic and muonic atoms. The obtained results are compared with other calculations and with experiment.
An angle-resolved x-ray spectroscopic scheme is presented for determining the hyperfine splitting of highly charged ions. For helium-like ions, in particular, we propose to measure either the angular distribution or polarization of the $1s2p~^{3}P_{1}, F \rightarrow 1s^{2}~^{1}S_{0}, F_{f}$ emission following the stimulated decay of the initial $1s2s~^{1}S_{0}, F_{i}$ level. It is found that both the angular and polarization characteristics of the emitted x-ray photons strongly depends on the (relative) \textit{splitting} of the partially overlapping hyperfine $1s2p~^{3}P_{1}, F$ resonances an…
Corrections of order $α^3(Zα)^5m$ to the Lamb shift and corrections of order $α^3(Zα)E_F$ to hyperfine splitting generated by the insertions of the three-loop one-particle reducible diagrams with radiative photons in the electron line are calculated. The calculations are performed in the Yennie gauge.
The ground state hyperfine splitting values of high Z hydrogenlike ions are calculated. The relativistic, nuclear and QED corrections are taken into account. The nuclear magnetization distribution correction (the Bohr-Weisskopf effect) is evaluated within the single particle model with the g_{S}-factor chosen to yield the observed nuclear moment. An additional contribution caused by the nuclear spin-orbit interaction is included in the calculation of the Bohr-Weisskopf effect. It is found that the theoretical value of the wavelength of the transition between the hyperfine splitting components …
We show that the non-spherical charge distribution of the proton manifests itself in hydrogen hyperfine splitting as an increase (in absolute value) of the proton Zemach radius and polarization contributions.
Using a technique based on production of ion Coulomb crystals, the isotope shifts of the 4s2 1S0 -> 4s5p 1P1 transition for all naturally occurring isotopes of calcium as well as the hyperfine splitting of the 4s5p 1P1 state in Ca-43 have been measured. The field shift and specific mass shift coefficients as well as the hyperfine structure constants for Ca-43 have been derived from the data.
We consider three-loop corrections to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the gauge invariant set of diagrams with virtual light-by-light scattering block. These diagrams produce both recoil and nonrecoil contributions to hyperfine splitting. Recoil corrections are enhanced by large logarithms of the muon-electron mass ratio. Both nonrecoil and logarithmically enhanced radiative-recoil corrections where calculated some time ago. Here we calculate nonlogarithmic radiative-recoil corrections generated by the insertions of the light-by-light scattering block.
We calculate three-loop radiative-recoil corrections to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the diagrams with the first order electron and muon polarization loop insertions in graphs with two exchanged photons. These corrections are enhanced by the large logarithm of the electron-muon mass ratio. The leading logarithm squared contribution was obtained a long time ago. Here we calculate the single-logarithmic and nonlogarithmic contributions. We previously calculated the three-loop radiative-recoil corrections generated by two-loop polarization insertions in the exchanged photons. The c…
