We have measured the frequency splitting between the $(2S, F=1/2)$ and $(2S, F=3/2)$ hyperfine sublevels in atomic deuterium by an optical differential method based on two-photon Doppler-free spectroscopy on a cold atomic beam. The result $f_{\rm HFS}^{(D)}(2S)= 40 924 454(7)$ Hz is the most precise value for this interval to date. In comparison to the previous radio-frequency measurement we have improved the accuracy by the factor of three.
The specific combination of hyperfine frequency intervals for metastable- and ground states in deuterium atom $D_{21}=8f_{\rm HFS}^{(D)}(2S)-f_{\rm HFS}^{(D)}(1S)$ derived from our measurement is in a good agreement with $D_{21}$ calculated from quantum-electrodynamics theory.
Nuclear structure corrections of orders $Zα\, E_F$ and $(Zα)^2 E_F$ are calculated for the hyperfine splitting of the muonic deuterium. The obtained results disagree with previous calculations and lead to a $5\,σ$ disagreement with the current experimental value of the $2S$ hyperfine splitting in $μ$D.
We consider the corrections to deuterium hyperfine structure originating from the two-photon exchange between electron and deuteron, with the deuteron excitations in the intermediate states. In particular, the motion of the two intermediate nucleons as a whole is taken into account. The problem is solved in the zero-range approximation. The result is in good agreement with the experimental value of the deuterium hyperfine splitting.
The ASACUSA collaboration is developing a polarized beam of antihydrogen atoms to precisely determine the ground-state hyperfine structure for studies of CPT and Lorentz invariance. Using a beam of ordinary hydrogen, measurements of both the $σ$ and $π$-transition have been performed, investigating orientation-dependent SME coefficients. Furthermore a first hyperfine experiment with a beam of deuterium is being prepared.
The prospects of tests of CPT symmetry using precision spectroscopy of antihydrogen are discussed with special emphasis on the ground-state hyperfine structure, a measurement of which is the aim of the ASACUSA collaboration at the AD/ELENA facility of CERN. Ongoing parallel experiments using hyperfine spectroscopy of hydrogen and deuterium aiming at studying Lorentz invariance by determining coefficients of the Standard Model Extension framework are described.
We consider the most accurate tests of bound state QED theory of the hyperfine splitting in two-body atoms related to the HFS interval of the 1s state in muonium and positronium and the 2s state in hydrogen, deuterium and the helium-3 ion. We summarize their QED theory and pay special attention to involved effects of strong interactions and to recent optical measurements of the 2s HFS interval in hydrogen and deuterium. We present results for specific ratios of the 1s-2s frequencies in hydrogen and deuterium which happen to be among the most accurately measured and calculated quantities.
Theoretical investigations of the hyperfine structure of the hydrogen molecular ion (one electron and two protons) are discussed. The nuclear spin-rotation interaction has been found to be of the same sign as in the hydrogen molecule and the hyperfine transition frequencies can be accurately predicted. With measurements of the hyperfine structure of the deuterium molecular ion (or of HD+) it should be possible to obtain a value of the deuteron quadrupole moment that could be compared with the values obtained from the deuterium molecule and from nuclear theory.
Molecular hydrogen ions are of metrological relevance due to the possibility of precise theoretical evaluation of their spectrum and of external-field-induced shifts. In homonuclear molecular ions the electric dipole $E1$ transitions are strongly suppressed, and of primary laser spectroscopy interest is the electric quadrupole ($E2$) transition spectrum. In continuation of previous work on the H$_2^+$ ion, we report here the results of the calculations of the hyperfine structure of the laser-induced electric quadrupole transitions between a large set of ro-vibrational states of D$_2^+$; the in…
In this work, we consider the thermal correction to the hyperfine interaction in hydrogen, deuterium, and the $^3$He$^+$ ion. This correction is effectively described by one-loop Feynman graphs in the framework of the quantum electrodynamics theory for bound states at a finite temperature. A simple analysis shows the importance of the obtained results for future prospects for measuring hyperfine splitting. In addition, the application for testing the time variation of fundamental constants is briefly discussed.
We have applied an optical method to the measurement of the 2S hyperfine interval in atomic hydrogen. The interval has been measured by means of two-photon spectroscopy of the 1S-2S transition on a hydrogen atomic beam shielded from external magnetic fields. The measured value of the 2S hyperfine interval is equal to 177 556 860(15) Hz and represents the most precise measurement of this interval to date. The theoretical evaluation of the specific combination of 1S and 2S hyperfine intervals D_21 is in moderately good agreement with the value for D_21 deduced from our measurement.
Spherically-symmetric ground states of alkali-metal atoms do not posses electric quadrupole moments. However, the hyperfine interaction between nuclear moments and atomic electrons distorts the spherical symmetry of electronic clouds and leads to non-vanishing atomic quadrupole moments. We evaluate these hyperfine-induced quadrupole moments using techniques of relativistic many-body theory and compile results for Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs atoms. For heavy atoms we find that the hyperfine-induced quadrupole moments are strongly (two orders of magnitude) enhanced by correlation effects. We further a…
We derive an expression for the magnetic blackbody shift of hyperfine transitions such as the cesium primary reference transition which defines the second. The shift is found to be a complicated function of temperature, and has a T^2 dependence only in the high-temperature limit. We also calculate the shift of ground-state p_1/2 hyperfine transitions which have been proposed as new atomic clock transitions. In this case interaction with the p_3/2 fine-structure multiplet may be the dominant effect.
We report measurements of the hyperfine coupling constant for the $8p \ ^2P_{1/2}$ level of atomic cesium, $^{133}$Cs, with a relative uncertainty of $\sim$0.019\%. Our result is $A = 42.933 \: (8)$ MHz, in good agreement with recent theoretical results. We also examine the hyperfine structure of the $8p \ ^2P_{3/2}$ state, and derive new values for the state energies of the $8p \ ^2P_{1/2}$ and $8p \ ^2P_{3/2}$ states of cesium.
We report measurements of the absolute energies of the hyperfine components of the $12s \ ^2S_{1/2}$ and $13s \ ^2S_{1/2}$ levels of atomic cesium, $^{133}$Cs. Using the frequency difference between these components, we determine the hyperfine coupling constants for these states, and report these values with a relative uncertainty of $\sim$0.06 %. We also examine the hyperfine structure of the $11d \ ^2D_{J}$ ($J=3/2, 5/2$) states, and resolve the sign ambiguity of the hyperfine coupling constants from previous measurements of these states. We also derive new, high precision values for the sta…
A light, compact optical isolator using an atomic vapor in the hyperfine Paschen-Back regime is presented. Absolute transmission spectra for experiment and theory through an isotopically pure 87Rb vapor cell show excellent agreement for fields of 0.6 T. We show π/4 rotation for a linearly polarized beam in the vicinity of the D2 line and achieve an isolation of 30 dB with a transmission > 95 %.
We report on our calculations of differential hyperfine anomalies in the nuclear single-particle model for a number of atoms and ions of interest for studies of fundamental symmetries violations. Comparison with available experimental data allows one to discriminate between different nuclear magnetization models, and this data supports the use of the nuclear single-particle model over the commonly-used uniform ball model. Accurate modelling of the nuclear magnetization distribution is important for testing atomic theory through hyperfine comparisons. The magnetization distribution must be adeq…
Hyperfine-induced electric dipole contributions may significantly increase probabilities of otherwise very weak electric octupole and magnetic quadrupole atomic clock transitions (e.g. transitions between $s$ and $f$ electron orbitals). These transitions can be used for exceptionally accurate atomic clocks, quantum information processing and search for dark matter. They are very sensitive to new physics beyond the Standard Model, such as temporal variation of the fine structure constant, the Lorentz invariance and Einstein equivalence principle violation. We formulate conditions under which th…
We experimentally study the breakdown of hyperfine coupling for an atom in a deep optical-dipole trap. One-color laser spectroscopy is performed at the resonance lines of a single $^{87}$Rb atom for a trap wavelength of 1064 nm. Evidence of hyperfine breakdown comes from three observations, namely a nonlinear dependence of the transition frequencies on the trap intensity, a splitting of lines which are degenerate for small intensities, and the ability to drive transitions which would be forbidden by selection rules in the absence of hyperfine breakdown. From the data, we infer the hyperfine in…
Polarized atomic beam sources have been in operation since many years to produce either nuclear polarized atomic hydrogen or deuterium beams. In recent experiments such a source was used to polarize both isotopes independently at the same time. By recombination of the atoms, HD molecules with all possible nuclear spin combinations can be created. Those spin isomers are useful for further applications like precision spectroscopy, as polarized targets for laser-particle acceleration, polarized fuel for fusion reactors or as an option for future measurements of electric dipole moments.
An optical measurement of the 2S hyperfine interval in atomic hydrogen using two-photon spectroscopy of the 1S-2S transition gives a value of 177 556 834.3(6.7) Hz. The uncertainty is 2.4 times smaller than achieved by our group in 2003 and more than 4 times smaller than for any independent radio-frequency measurement. The specific combination of the 2S and 1S hyperfine intervals predicted by QED theory $D_{21}=8 f_{\rm HFS}({2S}) - f_{\rm HFS}({1S})=48 953(3)$ Hz is in good agreement with the value of 48 923(54) Hz obtained from this experiment.
Calculations of the magnetic hyperfine structure rely on the input of nuclear properties -- nuclear magnetic moments and nuclear magnetization distributions -- as well as quantum electrodynamic (QED) radiative corrections for high-accuracy evaluation in heavy atoms. The uncertainties associated with assumed values of these properties limit the accuracy of hyperfine calculations. For example, for the heavy alkali-metal atoms Cs and Fr, these uncertainties may amount collectively to almost 1\% or 2\%, respectively. In this paper we propose a method for removing the dependence of hyperfine struct…
The quantum resonances of an atom possessing a single valence electron which shows hyperfine interaction with the nucleus is investigated in the presence of a three dimensional magnetic quadrupole field. Particular emphasis is put on the study of the interplay of the hyperfine and quadrupole forces. Analyzing the underlying Hamiltonian a variety of symmetries are revealed which give rise to a two-fold degeneracy of the resonance energies. Our numerical approach employs the complex scaling method and a Sturmian basis set. Several regimes and classes of short-lived and long-lived resonances are …
Frequency comb based multidimensional coherent spectroscopy is a novel optical method that enables high resolution measurement in a short acquisition time. The method's resolution makes multidimensional coherent spectroscopy relevant for atomic systems that have narrow resonances. We use double-quantum multidimensional coherent spectroscopy to reveal collective hyperfine resonances in rubidium vapor at 100 C induced by dipole-dipole interactions. We observe tilted lineshapes in the double-quantum 2D spectra, which has never been reported for Doppler-broadened systems. The tilted lineshapes sug…
Analysis of hyperfine structure constants of singly ionised cobalt (Co II) were performed on cobalt spectra measured by Fourier transform spectrometers in the region $3000-63000$ cm$^{-1}$ ($3333-159$ nm). Fits to over $700$ spectral lines led to measurements of $292$ magnetic dipole hyperfine interaction $A$ constants, with values between $-32.5$ mK and $59.5$ mK ($1$ mK $=0.001$ cm$^{-1}$). Uncertainties of $255$ A constants were between $\pm0.4$ mK and $\pm3.0$ mK, the remaining $37$ ranged up to $\pm7$ mK. The electric quadrupole hyperfine interaction $B$ constant could be estimated for on…
We describe a method to observe the dynamics of an excited-state transition in a room temperature atomic vapor using hyperfine quantum beats. Our experiment using cesium atoms consists of a pulsed excitation of the D2 transition, and continuous-wave driving of an excited-state transition from the 6P$_{3/2}$ state to the 7S$_{1/2}$ state. We observe quantum beats in the fluorescence from the 6P$_{3/2}$ state which are modified by the driving of the excited-state transition. The Fourier spectrum of the beat signal yields evidence of Autler-Townes splitting of the 6P$_{3/2}$, F = 5 hyperfine leve…
We used a Cs atomic fountain frequency standard to measure the Stark shift on the ground state hyperfine transiton frequency in cesium (9.2 GHz) due to the electric field generated by the blackbody radiation. The measures relative shift at 300 K is -1.43(11)e-14 and agrees with our theoretical evaluation -1.49(07)e-14. This value differs from the currently accepted one -1.69(04)e-14. The difference has a significant implication on the accuracy of frequency standards, in clocks comparison, and in a variety of high precision physics tests such as the time stability of fundamental constants.
Sum rules for the energy levels of a hyperfine multiplet in a constant uniform magnetic field is presented. It is found that for any values of the electron angular moment and the nuclear spin there are certain linear combinations of energy levels which do not depend on the magnetic field and can be used to determine the unperturbated hfs separation in the presence of perturbing magnetic field. It is also demonstrated that there are other linear combinations which are linear with the external magnetic field and hence can be used to determine bound values of the electron and nuclear magnetic mom…
We determine the Zemach moments of hydrogen and deuterium for the first time using only the world data on elastic electron-proton and electron-deuteron scattering. Such moments are required for the calculation of the nuclear corrections to the hyperfine structure of these hydrogenic atoms. We compare the resulting HFS predictions to the available high-precision data and provide an estimate of the size of the nuclear polarization corrections necessary to produce agreement between experimental HFS and theoretical calculations.
We describe a new method to determine the position of the atomic cloud during its interaction with the microwave field in the cavity of a fountain clock. The positional information is extracted from the spectrum of the F=3,mF=0 to F=4,mF=-1 hyperfine transition, which shows a position dependent asymmetry when the magnetic C-field is tilted by a few degrees with respect to the cavity axis. Analysis of this spectral asymmetry provides the horizontal center-of-mass position for the ensemble of atoms contributing to frequency measurements. With an uncertainty on the order of 0.1 mm, the obtained i…
We present tables for the bound-state energies for atomic hydrogen. The tabulated energies include the hyperfine structure, and thus this work extends the work of Rev. Mod. Phys. {\bf 84}, 1527 (2012), which excludes hyperfine structure. The tabulation includes corrections of the hyperfine structure due to the anomalous moment of the electron, due to the finite mass of the proton, and due to off-diagonal matrix elements of the hyperfine Hamiltonian. These corrections are treated incorrectly in most other works. Simple formulas valid for all quantum numbers are presented for the hyperfine corre…
Hyperfine structures of the triplet $n^3S-$states in the four-electron Be-atom(s) and Be-like ions are considered. It is shown that to determine the hyperfine structure splitting in such atomic systems one needs to know the triplet electron density at the central atomic nucleus $ρ_T(0)$. We have developed the procedure which allows allows one to determine such an electron density $ρ_T(0)$ for arbitrary four-electron atoms and ions.
To search for the temporal variation of the fundamental constants one needs to know dependence of atomic transition frequencies on these constants. We study the dependence of the hyperfine structure of atomic $s$-levels on nuclear radius and, via radius, on quark masses. An analytical formula has been derived and tested by the numerical relativistic Hartree-Fock calculations for Rb, Cd$^+$, Cs, Yb$^+$ and Hg$^+$. The results of this work allow the use of the results of past and future atomic clock experiments and quasar spectra measurements to put constrains on time variation of the quark mass…
We report our detailed analysis of a table-top system for the measurement of the weak-force-induced electric dipole moment of a ground state hyperfine transition carried out in an atomic beam geometry. We describe an experimental configuration of conductors for application of orthogonal r.f. and static electric fields, with cavity enhancement of the r.f. field amplitude, that allows confinement of the r.f. field to a region in which the static fields are uniform and well-characterized. We carry out detailed numerical simulations of the field modes, and analyze the expected magnitude of statist…
The present knowledge of Lamb shift, fine- and hyperfine structure of the $\mathrm{2S}$ and $\mathrm{2P}$ states in muonic deuterium is reviewed in anticipation of the results of a first measurement of several $\mathrm{2S-2P}$ transition frequencies in muonic deuterium ($μ\mathrm{d}$). A term-by-term comparison of all available sources reveals reliable values and uncertainties of the QED and nuclear structure-dependent contributions to the Lamb shift, which are essential for a determination of the deuteron rms charge radius from $μ\mathrm{d}$. Apparent discrepancies between different sources a…
This table is a compilation of experimental values of magnetic hyperfine anomaly in atomic and ionic systems. The last extensive compilation was published in 1984 by Buttgenbach (Hyperfine Interactions 20, (1984) p 1) and the aim here is to make an up to date compilation. The literature search covers the period to January 2011.
We give a pedagogical description of the method to extract the charge radii and Rydberg constant from laser spectroscopy in regular hydrogen (H) and deuterium (D) atoms, that is part of the CODATA least-squares adjustment (LSA) of the fundamental physical constants. We give a deuteron charge radius Rd from D spectroscopy alone of 2.1415(45) fm. This value is independent of the measurements that lead to the proton charge radius, and five times more accurate than the value found in the CODATA Adjustment 10. The improvement is due to the use of a value for the 1S->2S transition in atomic deuteriu…
An efficient $λ/2$-method ($λ$ is the resonant wavelength of laser radiation) based on nanometric-thickness cell filled with rubidium is implemented to study the splitting of hyperfine transitions of $^{85}$Rb and $^{87}$Rb $D_2$ lines in an external magnetic field in the range of $B =3$~kG -- 7~kG. It is experimentally demonstrated that at $B > 3$~kG from 38 (22) Zeeman transitions allowed at low $B$-field in $^{85}$Rb ($^{87}$Rb) spectra in the case of $σ^+$ polarized laser radiation there remain only 12 (8) which is caused by decoupling of the total electronic momentum $\textbf{J}$ and the …
We apply relativistic many-body methods to compute static differential polarizabilities for transitions inside the ground-state hyperfine manifolds of monovalent atoms and ions. Knowing this transition polarizability is required in a number of high-precision experiments, such as microwave atomic clocks and searches for CP-violating permanent electric dipole moments. While the traditional polarizability arises in the second-order of interaction with the externally-applied electric field, the differential polarizability involves additional contribution from the hyperfine interaction of atomic el…

Measurements of hyperfine polarization quantum beats are used determine the magnetic dipole (A) and electric quadrupole (B) coupling constants in the excited atomic Cs 8p level. The experimental approach is a novel combination of pulsed optical pumping and time-delayed stimulated emission probing of the excited level. From the measured evolution of the atomic linear polarization degree as a function of probe delay time, we determine the hyperfine coupling constants A = 7.42(6) MHz and B = 0.14(29) MHz.
In previous work devoted to {\it ab initio} calculations of hyperfine structure constants in nitrogen and fluorine atoms, we observed sizeable relativistic effects, a priori unexpected for such light systems, that can even largely dominate over electron correlation. We observed that the atomic wave functions calculated in the Breit-Pauli approximation describe adequately the relevant atomic levels and hyperfine structures, even in cases for which a small relativistic $LS$-term mixing becomes crucial. In the present work we identify new levels belonging to the spectroscopic terms $2p^4(^3\!P) 3…
Single trapped ions are ideal systems in which to test atomic physics at high precision: they are effectively isolated atoms held at rest and largely free from perturbing interactions. This thesis describes several projects developed to study the structure of singly-ionized barium and more fundamental physics. First, we describe a spin-dependent "electron-shelving" scheme that allows us to perform single ion electron spin resonance experiments in both the ground 6S_{1/2} and metastable 5D_{3/2} states at precision levels of 10^{-5}. We employ this technique to measure the ratio of off-resonant…
The values of nuclear electric quadrupole moment are different by about 7% for 87Sr nucleus between the recommended value [N. J. Stone, At. Data Nucl. Data Tables 111-112, 1 (2016); P. Pyykko, Mol. Phys. 116, 1328 (2018)] and earlier results [e.g. A. M. Matensson-Pendrill, J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 35, 917 (2002); K. Z. Yu et al., Phys. Rev. A 70, 012506 (2004)]. In this work, we reported a new value, Q(87Sr) = 328(4) mb, making use of our calculated electric field gradients produced by electrons at nucleus in combination with experimental values for hyperfine structures of the 5s5p 3P1,…
A measurement of the hyperfine coefficients and isotope shifts for the Dy I 421.291 nm transition [$4f^{10}6s^2 (J=8)\to4f^{10}6s6p (J=9)$] using atomic beam laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy is presented. A King Plot analysis is performed to determine a specific mass shift of $δν_{sms}^{164-162}=11(7)$ Hz for the 421-nm transition, confirming the pure $4f^{10}6s6p$ configuration of the excited state. This transition is currently being explored for laser cooling of an atomic beam of dysprosium used in a search for a temporal variation of the fine-structure constant.
We demonstrate subpicosecond-time-scale population transfer between the pair of hyperfine ground states of atomic rubidium using a single laser-pulse. Our scheme utilizes the geometric and dynamic phases induced during Rabi oscillation through the fine-structure excited state in order to construct an $X$ rotation gate for the hyperfine-state qubit system. Experiment performed with a femtosecond laser and cold rubidium atoms, in a magneto-optical trap, shows over 98\% maximal population transfer between the clock states.
The HERMES hydrogen and deuterium nuclear-polarized gas targets have been in use since 1996 with the polarized electron beam of HERA at DESY to study the spin structure of the nucleon. Polarized atoms from a Stern-Gerlach Atomic Beam Source are injected into a storage cell internal to the HERA electron ring. Atoms diffusing from the center of the storage cell into a side tube are analyzed to determine the atomic fraction and the atomic polarizations. The atoms have a nuclear polarization, the axis of which is defined by an external magnetic holding field. The holding field was longitudinal dur…
The magnetic hyperfine structure constants have been calculated for low-lying levels in neutral gold atom and gold-like ion of mercury taking into account Bohr--Weisskopf (BW) effect. BW effect is represented as a product of atomic and nuclear ($d_\mathrm{nuc}$) factors. We have calculated the atomic factors, which enable one to extract BW-correction values for far from stability gold nuclei from the experimental data. The possible uncertainty of our atomic calculations have been estimated by the comparison with the available experimental data. It has been shown that the standard single-partic…
Mesoscopic interference effects in multiple scattering of photons depend crucially on the internal structure of the scatterers. In the present article, we develop the analytical theory of multiple photon scattering by cold atoms with arbitrary internal hyperfine multiplets. For a specific application, we calculate the enhancement factor of elastic coherent backscattering as a function of detuning from an entire hyperfine multiplet of neighboring resonances that cannot be considered isolated. Our theory permits to understand why atoms behave differently from classical Rayleigh point-dipole scat…
We perform accurate calculations of energy levels as well as fine and hyperfine splittings of the lowest $^{1,3}\!P_J$, $^{3}\!S_1$, $^{3}\!P^e_J$, and $^{1,3}\!D_J$ excited states of the $^9$Be atom using explicitly correlated Gaussian functions and report on the breakdown of the standard hyperfine structure theory. Because of the strong hyperfine mixing, which prevents the use of common hyperfine constants, we formulate a description of the fine and hyperfine structure that is valid for an arbitrary coupling strength and may have wide applications in many other atomic systems.
One of the ASACUSA (Atomic Spectroscopy And Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons) collaboration's goals is the measurement of the ground state hyperfine transition frequency in antihydrogen, the antimatter counterpart of one of the best known systems in physics. This high precision experiment yields a sensitive test of the fundamental symmetry of CPT. Numerical simulations of hyperfine transitions of antihydrogen atoms have been performed providing information on the required antihydrogen events and the achievable precision.
Based on the results of accurate variational calculations we demonstrate stability of the five-body negatively charged ions $a^{+} b^{+} μ^{-} e^{-} e^{-}$. Each of these five-body ions contains two electrons $e^{-}$, one negatively charged muon $μ^{-}$ and two nuclei of the hydrogen isotopes $a, b = (p, d, t)$. The bound state properties of these five-body ions, including their hyperfine structure, are briefly discussed. We also investigate the hyperfine structure of the ground states of the four-body muonic quasi-atoms $a^{+} b^{+} μ^{-} e^{-}$. In particular, we determine the hyperfine stru…
We present state-of-the-art configuration interaction and coupled cluster calculations of the electron electric dipole moment, the nucleon-electron scalar-pseudoscalar, and the magnetic hyperfine interaction constants ($α_{d_e}, α_{C_S}, A_{||}$, respectively) for the thallium atomic ground state $^2P_{1/2}$. Our present best values are $α_{d_e} = -559 \pm 28$, $α_{C_S} = 6.77 \pm 0.34$ $[10^{-18} e$ cm$]$, and $A_{||} = 21172 \pm 1059$ [MHz]. These findings lead to a significant reduction of the theoretical uncertainties for ${\cal{P,T}}$-odd interaction constants but not to stronger constrai…
