Single trapped ions are ideal systems in which to test atomic physics at high precision: they are effectively isolated atoms held at rest and largely free from perturbing interactions. This thesis describes several projects developed to study the structure of singly-ionized barium and more fundamental physics.
First, we describe a spin-dependent "electron-shelving" scheme that allows us to perform single ion electron spin resonance experiments in both the ground 6S_{1/2} and metastable 5D_{3/2} states at precision levels of 10^{-5}. We employ this technique to measure the ratio of off-resonant light shifts (or ac-Stark effect) in these states to a precision of 10^{-3} at two different wavelengths. These results constitute a new high precision test of heavy-atom atomic theory. Such experimental tests in Ba+ are in high demand since knowledge of key dipole matrix elements is currently limited to about 5%. Ba+ has recently been the subject of theoretical interest towards a test of atomic parity violation for which knowledge of dipole matrix elements is an important prerequisite. We summarize this parity violation experimental concept and describe new ideas. (continued...)

Laser spectroscopy of the low lying $^1$P and $^3$D states in atomic barium has been performed. This work contributes substantially to the development of an effective laser cooling and trapping for heavy alkaline earth elements and aims in particular for a better understanding of the atomic wave function of these systems. Isotope shifts and hyperfine structures are ideal probes for the wave functions at the position of the nucleus. This is essential input for a theoretical evaluation of the sensitivity to fundamental symmetry breaking properties like permanent electric dipole moments. We repor…
We report an experimental investigation on the Doppler-free saturated absorption spectroscopy of buffer-gas-cooled Barium monofluoride (BaF) molecules in a 4~K cryogenic cell. The obtained spectra with a resolution of 19~MHz, much smaller than previously observed in absorption spectroscopy, clearly resolve the hyperfine transitions. Moreover, we use these high-resolution spectra to fit the hyperfine splittings of excited $A(v=0)$ state and find the hyperfine splitting of the laser-cooling-relevant $A^2Π_{1/2}(v=0, J=1/2, +)$ state is about 18 MHz, much higher than the previous theoretically pr…
We theoretically investigate the laser cooling of fermionic barium monofluoride (137BaF) molecules, which are promising candidates for precision studies of weak parity violation and nuclear anapole moments. This molecular species features two nuclear spins, resulting in a hyperfine structure that is considerably more complicated than the one found in the usual laser-cooled diatomics. We use optical Bloch equations and rate equations to show that optical cycling, sub-Doppler cooling and bichromatic forces can all be realized under realistically achievable experimental conditions.
We use relativistic Hartree-Fock and correlation potential methods to calculate nuclear spin-dependent parity non-conserving amplitudes (dominated by the nuclear anapole moment) between hyperfine structure components of the ground state of odd isotopes of K, Rb, Cs, Ba+, Yb+, Tl, Fr, and Ra+. The results are to be used for interpretation of current and future measurements.
Electric polarizabilities of four low-J even-parity states and three low-J odd-parity states of atomic barium in the range $35,600 $ to $36,000\ $cm$^{-1}$ are investigated. The states of interest are excited (in an atomic beam) via an intermediate odd-parity state with a sequence of two laser pulses. The odd-parity states can be excited due to the Stark-induced mixing with even-parity states. The polarizabilities are measured via direct spectroscopy on the second-stage transition. Several states have tensor and scalar polarizabilities that exceed the values that might be expected from the kno…
A new protocol for measuring the branching fraction of hydrogenic atoms with only statistically limited uncertainty is proposed and demonstrated for the decay of the P$_{3/2}$ level of the barium ion, with precision below $0.5\%$. Heavy hydrogenic atoms like the barium ion are test beds for fundamental physics such as atomic parity violation and they also hold the key to understanding nucleo-synthesis in stars. To draw definitive conclusion about possible physics beyond the standard model by measuring atomic parity violation in the barium ion it is necessary to measure the dipole transition pr…
The hyperfine structure of the long-lived $5D_{3/2}$ and $5D_{5/2}$ levels of Ba$^+$ ion is analyzed. A procedure for extracting relatively unexplored nuclear magnetic moments $Ω$ is presented. The relevant electronic matrix elements are computed in the framework of the ab initio relativistic many-body perturbation theory. Both the first- and the second-order (in the hyperfine interaction) corrections to the energy levels are analyzed. It is shown that a simultaneous measurement of the hyperfine structure of the entire $5D_J$ fine-structure manifold allows one to extract $Ω$ without contaminat…
The radium atom is a promising system for studying parity and time invariance violating weak interactions. However, available experimental spectroscopic data for radium is insufficient for designing an optimal experimental setup. We calculate the energy levels and transition amplitudes for radium states of significant interest. Forty states corresponding to all possible configurations consisting of the $7s$, $7p$ and $6d$ single-electron states as well as the states of the $7s8s$, $7s8p$ and $7s7d$ configurations have been calculated. The energies of ten of these states corresponding to the $6…

Parity violation experiment in Yb is made on the strongly forbidden M1 transition 6s^2 1S0 \to 5d6s 3D1. The hyperfine mixing of the 5d6s 3D1 and 5d6s 3D2 levels opens E2 channel, whose amplitude differs for F-sublevels of the 3D1 level. This effect may be important for the experimental search for the nuclear-spin-dependent parity violation effects predominantly caused by the nuclear anapole moment.
$^{133}\text{Ba}^+$ has been identified as an attractive ion for quantum information processing due to the unique combination of its spin-1/2 nucleus and visible wavelength electronic transitions. Using a microgram source of radioactive material, we trap and laser-cool the synthetic $A$ = 133 radioisotope of barium II in a radio-frequency ion trap. Using the same, single trapped atom, we measure the isotope shifts and hyperfine structure of the $6^2 \text{P}_{1/2}$ $\leftrightarrow$ $6^2 \text{S}_{1/2}$ and $6^2 \text{P}_{1/2}$ $\leftrightarrow$ $5^2 \text{D}_{3/2}$ electronic transitions that…
Stark-induced electric dipole amplitudes between states of the same nominal parity can be important in experiments to observe parity nonconservation in atoms. The Stark-induced E1 amplitudes are expressed in terms of an irreducible spherical-tensor decomposition. This formalism is applied to the specific case of transitions between hyperfine sublevels of a single atomic state. It is shown that in the ground states of alkali atoms, such transitions are suppressed by many orders of magnitude relative to naive expectations.
We have performed relativistic many-body calculations of the hyperfine interaction in the $6s$ and $7s$ states of Cs, including the off-diagonal matrix element. The calculations were used to determine the accuracy of the semi-empirical formula for the electromagnetic transition amplitude $<6s|M1|7s>$ induced by the hyperfine interaction. We have found that even though the contribution of the many-body effects into the matrix elements is very large, the square root formula $<6s|H_{hfs}|7s > = \sqrt{< 6s|H_{hfs}|6s > < 7s|H_{hfs}|7s >}$ remains valid to the accuracy of a fraction of $10^{-3}$. T…
Parity- and time-reversal-symmetry violating interaction constants required for the interpretation of a recent measurement (arXiv:1704.07928 [physics.atom-ph]) of corresponding symmetry violations in the $Ω=1$ (${^3Δ}_1$) science state of the HfF$^+$ molecular ion are reported. Using a relativistic four-component all-electron multi-reference configuration interaction model the nucleon-electron scalar-pseudoscalar interaction constant is determined as $W_S = 20.0$ [kHz]. An updated result for the electron electric-dipole-moment effective electric field of $|E_{\text{eff}}| = 22.7 \left[\frac{\r…
We present precision measurements of the hyperfine intervals in the 5D3/2 manifold of a single trapped Barium ion, 137 Ba+ . Measurements of the hyperfine intervals are made between mF = 0 sublevels over a range of magnetic fields allowing us to interpolate to the zero field values with an accuracy below a few Hz, an improvement on previous measurements by three orders of magnitude. Our results, in conjunction with theoretical calculations, provide a 30-fold reduction in the uncertainty of the magnetic dipole (A) and electric quadrupole (B) hyperfine constants. In addition, we obtain the magne…
Calculations of the magnetic hyperfine structure rely on the input of nuclear properties -- nuclear magnetic moments and nuclear magnetization distributions -- as well as quantum electrodynamic (QED) radiative corrections for high-accuracy evaluation in heavy atoms. The uncertainties associated with assumed values of these properties limit the accuracy of hyperfine calculations. For example, for the heavy alkali-metal atoms Cs and Fr, these uncertainties may amount collectively to almost 1\% or 2\%, respectively. In this paper we propose a method for removing the dependence of hyperfine struct…
Atomic Parity Violation provides the rare opportunity of a low energy window into possible new fundamental processes at very high mass scales normally investigated at large high energy accelerators. Precise measurements on atomic systems are currently the most sensitive probes of many kinds of new physics, and complement high energy experiments. Present atomic experiments are beginning to reach their limits of precision due to either sensitivity, systematics or atomic structure uncertainties. An experiment in a single trapped Barium ion can improve on all of these difficulties. This experiment…
We present calculations of nuclear-spin-dependent and nuclear-spin-independent parity violating amplitudes in Ba, Ra, Ac+, Th and Pa. Parity nonconservation in these systems is greatly enhanced due to the presence of very close electronic energy levels of opposite parity, large nuclear charge, and strong nuclear enhancement of parity-violating effects. The presented amplitudes constitute several of the largest atomic parity-violating signals predicted so far. Experiments using these systems may be performed to determine values for the nuclear anapole moment, a P-odd T-even nuclear moment given…
In this paper, we have calculated parity nonconserving electric dipole transition amplitudes of the hyperfine components for the transitions between the ground and first excited states of $^{137}$Ba$^{+}$ and $^{87}$Sr$^{+}$ using sum-over-states technique. The results are presented to extract the constants associated with the nuclear spin dependent amplitudes from experimental measurements. The wavefunctions to calculate the most dominant part of the sums are constructed using highly correlated coupled-cluster theory based on the Dirac-Coulomb-Gaunt Hamiltonian.
We have systematically investigated the ground-state hyperfine structure for alkali-metal atoms ^{87}Rb, ^{133}Cs, ^{211}Fr and alkali-metal-like ions ^{135}Ba^+, ^{225}Ra^+, which are of particular interest for parity violation studies. The quantum electrodynamic one-loop radiative corrections have been rigorously evaluated within an extended Furry picture employing core-Hartree and Kohn-Sham atomic potentials. Moreover, the effect of the nuclear magnetization distribution on the hyperfine structure intervals has been studied in detail and its uncertainty has been estimated. Finally, the theo…
Corrections from Breit interaction to basic properties of atomic 133Cs are determined in the framework of third-order relativistic many-body perturbation theory. The corrections to energies, hyperfine-structure constants, off-diagonal hyperfine 6S-7S amplitude, and electric-dipole matrix elements are tabulated. It is demonstrated that the Breit corrections to correlations are comparable to the Breit corrections at the Dirac-Hartree-Fock level. Modification of the parity-nonconserving (PNC) 6S-7S amplitude due to Breit interaction is also evaluated; the resulting weak charge of $^{133}$Cs shows…
Single trapped and laser cooled Radium ion as a possible candidate for measuring the parity violation induced frequency shift has been discussed here. Even though the technique to be used is similar to that proposed by Fortson [1], Radium has its own advantages and disadvantages. The most attractive part of Radium ion as compared to that of Barium ion is its mass which comes along with added complexity of instability as well as other issues which are discussed here
Atomic parity violation has been observed in the 6s^2 1S0 - 5d6s 3D1 408-nm forbidden transition of ytterbium. The parity-violating amplitude is found to be two orders of magnitude larger than in cesium, where the most precise experiments to date have been performed. This is in accordance with theoretical predictions and constitutes the largest atomic parity-violating amplitude yet observed. This also opens the way to future measurements of neutron skins and anapole moments by comparing parity-violating amplitudes for various isotopes and hyperfine components of the transition.
We report on our calculations of differential hyperfine anomalies in the nuclear single-particle model for a number of atoms and ions of interest for studies of fundamental symmetries violations. Comparison with available experimental data allows one to discriminate between different nuclear magnetization models, and this data supports the use of the nuclear single-particle model over the commonly-used uniform ball model. Accurate modelling of the nuclear magnetization distribution is important for testing atomic theory through hyperfine comparisons. The magnetization distribution must be adeq…
The photoionization cross-sections of two even-parity excited states, $5d6d ^3D_1$ and $6s7d ^3D_{2}$, of atomic Ba at the ionization-laser wavelength of 556.6 nm were measured. We found that the total cross-section depends on the relative polarization of the atoms and the ionization-laser light. With density-matrix algebra, we show that, in general, there are at most three parameters in the photoionization cross-section. Some of these parameters are determined in this work. We also present the measurement of the radiative lifetime of five even-parity excited states of barium.
The antihydrogen programme of the ASACUSA collaboration at the antiproton decelerator of CERN focuses on Rabi-type measurements of the ground-state hyperfine splitting of antihydrogen for a test of the combined Charge-Parity-Time symmetry. The spectroscopy apparatus consists of a microwave cavity to drive hyperfine transitions and a superconducting sextupole magnet for quantum state analysis via Stern-Gerlach separation. However, the small production rates of antihydrogen forestall comprehensive performance studies on the spectroscopy apparatus. For this purpose a hydrogen source and detector …
A dynamic blue-detuned optical dipole trap with stable $^{87}Rb$ atoms produces a differential ac Stark shift of 18 Hz in the ground state hyperfine transition, and it preserves the ground state hyperfine superpositions for a long coherence time of 180 ms. The trapped atoms undergoing microwave Rabi oscillations are sensitive to a small signal, artificially generated with a second microwave source, phase locked to the first allow- ing a simple and effective method for determining signal-to-noise ratio limits through interference techniques. This provides an excellent means of calibrating sensi…
The electric dipole-forbidden, quadrupole 6S1/2 <-> 5D3/2 transition in Ba+ near 2051 nm, with a natural linewidth of 13 mHz, is attractive for potential observation of parity non-conservation, and also as a clock transition for a barium ion optical frequency standard. This transition also offers a direct means of populating the metastable 5D3/2 state to measure the nuclear magnetic octupole moment in the odd barium isotopes. Light from a diode-pumped, solid state Tm,Ho:YLF laser operating at 2051 nm is used to coherently drive this transition between resolved Zeeman levels in a single trapped…
We have measured the hyperfine splitting of the $7P_{1/2}$ state at the 100 ppm level in Fr isotopes ($^{206g,206m, 207, 209, 213, 221}$Fr) near the closed neutron shell ($N$ = 126 in $^{213}$Fr). The measurements in five isotopes and a nuclear isomeric state of francium, combined with previous determinations of the $7S_{1/2}$ splittings, reveal the spatial distribution of the nuclear magnetization, i.e. the Bohr-Weisskopf effect. We compare our results with a simple shell model consisting of unpaired single valence nucleons orbiting a spherical nucleus, and find good agreement over a range of…
The branching fractions from the excited state $6P_{1/2}$ of singly charged barium ion has been measured with a precision $0.05%$ in an ion trap experiment. This measurement along with the known value of the upper state life-time allowed the determination of the dipole matrix elements for the transitions $P-S$ and $P-D$ to below one percent level. Therefore, for the first time it is now possible to compare the many body calculations of these matrix elements at level which is of significance to any parity non-conservation experiment on barium ion. Moreover, these dipole matrix elements are the …
We report a precise measurement of hyperfine structure in the $ \rm {3\,S_{1/2}} $ state of the odd isotope of Li, namely $ \rm {^7Li} $. The state is excited from the ground $ \rm {2\,S_{1/2}} $ state (which has the same parity) using two single-photon transitions via the intermediate $ \rm {2\,P_{3/2}} $ state. The value of the hyperfine constant we measure is $ A = 93.095(52)$ MHz, which resolves two discrepant values reported in the literature measured using other techniques. Our value is also consistent with theoretical calculations.
Originating from the weak interaction, parity violation in chiral molecules has been considered as a possible origin of the biohomochirality. It was predicted in 1974 but has never been observed so far. Parity violation should lead to a very tiny frequency difference in the rovibrational spectra of the enantiomers of a chiral molecule. We have proposed to observe this predicted frequency difference using the two photon Ramsey fringes technique on a supersonic beam. Promising candidates for this experiment are chiral oxorhenium complexes, which present a large effect, can be synthesized in larg…
We perform precision microwave spectroscopy--aided by Stark deceleration--to reveal the low magnetic field behavior of OH in its ^2Π_{3/2} ro-vibronic ground state, identifying two field-insensitive hyperfine transitions suitable as qubits and determining a differential Lande g-factor of 1.267(5)\times10^{-3} between opposite parity components of the Λ-doublet. The data are successfully modeled with an effective hyperfine Zeeman Hamiltonian, which we use to make a tenfold improvement of the magnetically sensitive, astrophysically important ΔF=\pm1 satellite-line frequencies, yielding 172052988…
We have further developed and extended a method for calculation of atomic properties based on a combination of the configuration interaction and coupled-cluster approach. We have applied this approach to the calculation of different properties of atomic lead, including the energy levels, hyperfine structure constants, electric-dipole transition amplitudes, and E1 parity nonconserving (PNC) amplitude for the (6p^2) ^3P_0 - (6p^2) ^3P_1 transition. The uncertainty of the E1 PNC amplitude was reduced by a factor of two in comparison with the previous most accurate calculation [V.~A.~Dzuba et.al.,…
We calculate nuclear spin-dependent parity non-conserving $E1$-amplitudes for optical transition $6p_{1/2,F} -> 6p_{3/2,F'}$ and for hyperfine transition $6p_{1/2,F} -> 6p_{1/2,F'}$ in Tl. Experimental limit on the former amplitude placed by Vetter et al. [PRL, 74, 2658 (1995)] corresponds to the anapole moment constant $κ_a = -0.26 \pm 0.27$. Experiment on the hyperfine transition can give direct measurement of the spin-dependent amplitude, because spin-independent amplitude turns to zero.
In this paper we study the influence of electron screening on the Bohr-Weisskopf (BW) effect in many-electron atoms. The BW effect gives the finite-nucleus magnetization contribution to the hyperfine structure. Relativistic atomic many-body calculations are performed for s and p_1/2 states of several systems of interest for studies of atomic parity violation and time-reversal-violating electric dipole moments -- Rb, Cs, Fr, Ba+, Ra+, and Tl. For s states, electron screening effects are small, and the relative BW correction for hydrogenlike ions and neutral atoms is approximately the same. We r…
Nuclear spin-dependent parity violation arises from weak interactions between electrons and nucleons, and from nuclear anapole moments. We outline a method to measure such effects, using a Stark-interference technique to determine the mixing between opposite-parity rotational/hyperfine levels of ground-state molecules. The technique is applicable to nuclei over a wide range of atomic number, in diatomic species that are theoretically tractable for interpretation. This should provide data on anapole moments of many nuclei, and on previously unmeasured neutral weak couplings.
We discuss experiments aimed at measurements of atomic parity nonconservation (PNC) effects in the 1S0-3D1 transition (408 nm) in atomic Ytterbium (Z=70). According to theoretical predictions, the PNC-induced E1 amplitude of this transition is ~100 times larger than the analogous amplitude in Cs. Such an experiment will determine differences in PNC effects between different hyperfine components for odd-neutron-number Yb isotopes and, thereby, will allow measurements of the nuclear anapole moments in nuclei with unpaired neutrons. In addition, measurements of PNC in different isotopes would giv…
Barium monohydride (BaH) is an attractive candidate for extending laser cooling and trapping techniques to diatomic hydrides. The apparatus and high-resolution optical spectroscopy presented here demonstrate progress toward this goal. A cryogenic buffer-gas-cooled molecular beam of BaH was constructed and characterized. Pulsed laser ablation into cryogenic helium buffer gas delivers $\sim1\times10^{10}$ molecules/sr/pulse in the X$^2Σ^+$ ($v''=0,N''=1$) state of primary interest. More than $1\times10^7$ of these molecules per pulse enter the downstream science region with forward velocities be…
The absolute frequency measurement for all of the hyperfine transitions of 6P1/2 -> 7S1/2 using a self-referencing frequency comb is reported. This transition can be used as a bench marker for the accurate atomic wave function, and then improve the calculation of the atomic parity- non-conservation (PNC). The frequency center is precisely determined by saturation spectroscopy utilizing a pair of the counter-propagating laser beams intersecting with atomic beam. Such a Doppler-free profile has been improved to 350 kHz in the absolute frequency measurement. The 7S1/2 state hyperfine splittings h…
Calculation of the energies, magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants, E1 transition amplitudes between the low-lying states, and nuclear spin-dependent parity-nonconserving amplitudes for the ^2S_{1/2} - ^2D_{3/2,5/2} transitions in ^{171}Yb^+ ion is performed using two different approaches. First, we carried out many-body perturbation theory calculation considering Yb^+ as a monovalent system. Additional all-order calculations are carried out for selected properties. Second, we carried out configuration interaction calculation considering Yb as a 15-electron system and compared the resu…
The ASACUSA collaboration aims to measure the ground state hyperfine splitting (GS-HFS) of antihydrogen, the antimatter pendant to atomic hydrogen. Comparisons of the corresponding transitions in those two systems will provide sensitive tests of the CPT symmetry, the combination of the three discrete symmetries charge conjugation, parity, and time reversal. For offline tests of the GS-HFS spectroscopy apparatus we constructed a source of cold polarised atomic hydrogen. In these proceedings we report the successful observation of the hyperfine structure transitions of atomic hydrogen with our a…
We report a fourfold improvement in the determination of nuclear magnetic moments for neutron-deficient isotopes of francium-207--213, reducing the uncertainties from 2% for most isotopes to 0.5%. These are found by comparing our high-precision calculations of hyperfine structure constants for the ground states with experimental values. In particular, we show the importance of a careful modeling of the Bohr-Weisskopf effect, which arises due to the finite nuclear magnetization distribution. This effect is particularly large in Fr and until now has not been modeled with sufficiently high accura…

Recent advances in interpreting the most accurate to-date measurement of atomic parity violation in Cs are reviewed. The inferred nuclear weak charge, Q_W = - 72.65(28)_expt (36)_theor, agrees with the prediction of the standard model at 1 sigma level. Further improved interpretation is limited by an accuracy of solving basic correlation problem of atomic structure. We report on our progress in solving this problem within the relativistic coupled-cluster formalism. We include single-, double- and triple- electronic excitations in the coupled-cluster expansion. Numerical results for energies, e…
It is demonstrated that Breit and negative-energy state contributions reduce the 2.5 sigma deviation [S.C. Bennett and C.E. Wieman, Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 2484 (1999)] in the value of the weak charge of 133Cs from the Standard Model prediction to 1.7sigma. The corrections are obtained in the relativistic many-body perturbation theory by combining all-order Coulomb and second-order Breit contributions. The corrections to parity-nonconserving amplitudes amount to 0.6% in 133Cs and 1.1% in 223Fr. The relevant magnetic-dipole hyperfine structure constants are modified at the level of 0.3% in Cs, and…
We employ the $Z$-vector method in the four-component relativistic coupled-cluster framework to calculate the parity (${\mathcal{P}}$) and time-reversal (${\mathcal{T}}$) symmetry violating scalar-pseudoscalar (S-PS) nucleus-electron interaction constant ($W_\text{s}$), the effective electric field ($E_\text{eff}$) experienced by the unpaired electron and the nuclear magnetic quadrupole moment (NMQM)-electron interaction constant ($W_\text{M}$) in the open-shell ground electronic state of HgF. The molecular frame dipole moment and the magnetic hyperfine structure (HFS) constant of the molecule…
We define and measure the ratio (R) of the vector ac-Stark effect (or light shift) in the 6S_1/2 and 5D_3/2 states of a single trapped barium ion to 0.2% accuracy at two different off-resonant wavelengths. We earlier found R = -11.494(13) at 514.531nm and now report the value at 1111.68nm, R = +0.4176(8). These observations together yield a value of the <5D||er||4F> matrix element, previously unknown in the literature. Also, comparison of our results with an ab initio calculation of dynamic polarizability would yield a new test of atomic theory and improve the understanding of atomic structure…
We report on hyperfine-resolved laser spectroscopy of the A$^2Π\leftarrow $X$^2Σ^+$ transition of MgF, relevant for laser cooling. We recorded 25 rotational transitions with an absolute accuracy of better than 20 MHz, assigned 56 hyperfine lines and determined precise rotational, fine and hyperfine structure parameters for the A$^2Π$ state. The radiative lifetime of the A$^2Π$ state was determined to be 7.2(3) ns, in good agreement with \textit{ab initio} calculations. The transition isotope shift between bosonic isotopologues of the molecule is recorded and compared to predicted values within…
