Stark-induced electric dipole amplitudes between states of the same nominal parity can be important in experiments to observe parity nonconservation in atoms. The Stark-induced E1 amplitudes are expressed in terms of an irreducible spherical-tensor decomposition. This formalism is applied to the specific case of transitions between hyperfine sublevels of a single atomic state. It is shown that in the ground states of alkali atoms, such transitions are suppressed by many orders of magnitude relative to naive expectations.
The ac Stark shift of hyperfine levels of neutral atoms can be calculated using the third order perturbation theory(TOPT), where the third order corrections are quadratic in the atom-photon interaction and linear in the hyperfine interaction. In this paper, we use Green's function to derive the $E^{[2+ε]}$ method which can give close values to those of TOPT for the differential light shift between two hyperfine levels. It comes with a simple form and easy incorporation of theoretical and experimental atomic structure data. Furthermore, we analyze the order of approximation and give the conditi…

We report detailed spectroscopic measurements of the X(0)$[^3Σ^+]$(v=0) to B(1)$[^3Π]$ (v=5) transition in PbO. Using a Stark-modulated laser absorption technique, we have measured the hyperfine constant of $^{207}$PbO in the B(1) state, as well as B(1)(v=5) rotational constant, X-B isotope shifts, etc. The hyperfine structure of the B(1) state is of interest as a benchmark for calculations of PbO electronic structure, related to experiments to search for the electric dipole moment of the electron.
Frequency comb based multidimensional coherent spectroscopy is a novel optical method that enables high resolution measurement in a short acquisition time. The method's resolution makes multidimensional coherent spectroscopy relevant for atomic systems that have narrow resonances. We use double-quantum multidimensional coherent spectroscopy to reveal collective hyperfine resonances in rubidium vapor at 100 C induced by dipole-dipole interactions. We observe tilted lineshapes in the double-quantum 2D spectra, which has never been reported for Doppler-broadened systems. The tilted lineshapes sug…
We present a theoretical analysis of the Stark effect in the hyperfine structure of the cesium ground-state. We have used third order perturbation theory, including diagonal and off-diagonal hyperfine interactions, and have identified terms which were not considered in earlier treatments. A numerical evaluation using perturbing levels up to n=18 yields new values for the tensor polarizability $α_2(6S_{1/2})$ and for the Stark shift of the clock transition frequency in cesium. The polarizabilities are in good agreement with experimental values, thereby removing a 40-year-old discrepancy. The cl…
We experimentally study the breakdown of hyperfine coupling for an atom in a deep optical-dipole trap. One-color laser spectroscopy is performed at the resonance lines of a single $^{87}$Rb atom for a trap wavelength of 1064 nm. Evidence of hyperfine breakdown comes from three observations, namely a nonlinear dependence of the transition frequencies on the trap intensity, a splitting of lines which are degenerate for small intensities, and the ability to drive transitions which would be forbidden by selection rules in the absence of hyperfine breakdown. From the data, we infer the hyperfine in…
We demonstrate a technique for directly measuring the quadratic Zeeman shift using stimulated Raman transitions. The quadratic Zeeman shift has been measured yielding [delta][nju] = 1296.8 +/-3.3 Hz/G^{2} for magnetically insensitive sublevels (5S1/2, F = 2,mF = 0 -> 5S1/2, F = 3,mF = 0) of ^{85}Rb by compensating the magnetic eld and cancelling the ac Stark shift. We also measured the cancellation ratio of the differential ac Stark shift due to the imbalanced Raman beams by using two pairs of Raman beams ([sigma]^{+}, [sigma]^{+}) and it is 1:3.67 when the one-photon detuning is 1.5 GHz in the…
Removal energies and hyperfine constants of the lowest four $ns, np_{1/2}$ and $np_{3/2}$ states in Na, K, Rb and Cs are calculated; removal energies of the n=7--10 states and hyperfine constants of the n=7 and 8 states in Fr are also calculated. The calculations are based on the relativistic single-double (SD) approximation in which single and double excitations of Dirac-Hartree-Fock (DHF) wave functions are included to all-orders in perturbation theory. Using SD wave functions, accurate values of removal energies, electric-dipole matrix elements and static polarizabilities are obtained, howe…
Hyperfine-induced electric dipole contributions may significantly increase probabilities of otherwise very weak electric octupole and magnetic quadrupole atomic clock transitions (e.g. transitions between $s$ and $f$ electron orbitals). These transitions can be used for exceptionally accurate atomic clocks, quantum information processing and search for dark matter. They are very sensitive to new physics beyond the Standard Model, such as temporal variation of the fine structure constant, the Lorentz invariance and Einstein equivalence principle violation. We formulate conditions under which th…
We have measured the AC-Stark shift of the $14D_{5/2}$ Rydberg state of rubidium 87 in an optical dipole trap formed by a focussed CO$_2$-laser. We find good quantitative agreement with the model of a free electron experiencing a ponderomotive potential in the light field. In order to reproduce the observed spectra we take into account the broadening of the Rydberg state due to photoionization. The extracted cross-section is compatible with previous measurements on neighboring Rydberg states.
Because molecules can have their orientation locked when embedded into a solid rare-gas matrix, their hyperfine structure is strongly perturbed relative to the freely rotating molecule. The addition of an electric field further perturbs the structure, and fields parallel and antiparallel to the molecular orientation result in different shifts of the hyperfine structure. These shifts enable the selective detection of molecules with different orientations relative to the axes of a rare-gas crystal, which will be an important ingredient of an improved electron electric dipole moment measurement u…
We propose a direct method of detection of the nuclear anapole moment. It is based on the existence of a linear Stark shift for alkali atoms in their ground state perturbed by a quadrupolar interaction potential and a magnetic field. This shift is proportional to the T-even pseudoscalar built from the quadrupolar potential symmetry axis, the directions of the applied electric and magnetic fields. It involves on the one hand the anisotropy of the hyperfine interaction induced by the quadrupolar interaction and, on the other, the static electric dipole moment arising from electroweak interactions …
We report the measurement of hyperfine splitting in the $7d$ $^{2}D_{3/2}$ state of $^{133}$Cs using high resolution Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy in a Cs vapor cell. We determine the hyperfine coupling constants $A = 7.3509(9)$ MHz and $B = -0.041(8)$ MHz, which represent an order of magnitude improvement in the precision. We also obtain bounds on the magnitude of the nuclear magnetic octupole coupling constant $C$. Additionally, we measure the ac Stark shift of the $6s$ $^{2}S_{1/2} \rightarrow 7d$ $^{2}D_{3/2}$ transition at 767.8 nm to be $-49 \pm 5$ Hz/(W/cm$^2$), in agreement with…
Stark effect is observed in many natural and artificial plasmas and is of great importance for diagnostic purposes. Since this effect alters profiles of spectral lines, it should be taken into account when assessing chemical composition of radiation sources, including stars. Copper is one of the elements which studies of stellar atmospheres deal with. To this end, UV and visible Cu lines are used. However, there is a lack of agreement between existing data on their Stark parameters. It is therefore of interest to obtain new experimental data on these lines and to compare them to previous resul…
The microwave clock frequency of the $|5s~^2S_{1/2}, F=0,m_F=0 \rangle \leftrightarrow |5s~^2S_{1/2}, F=1,m_F=0 \rangle$ transition in the $^{113}$Cd$^+$ ion has been reported as 15199862855.0192(10) Hz [Opt. Lett. {\bf 40}, 4249 (2015)]. Fractional systematic due to the black-body radiation (BBR) shift ($β$) arising from the Stark effect in the above clock transition was used as $-1.1 \times 10^{-16}$ from our unpublished preliminary estimation. We present here a precise value as $β=-1.815(77) \times 10^{-16}$ by carrying out rigorous calculations of third-order polarizabilities of the hyperf…
We have investigated energies, magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants ($A_{hyf}$) and electric dipole (E1) matrix elements of a number of low-lying states of the triply ionized tin (Sn$^{3+}$) by employing relativistic coupled-cluster theory. Contributions from the Breit interaction and lower-order quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects in determination of above quantities are also given explicitly. These higher-order relativistic effects are found to be important for accurate evaluation of energies, while QED contributions are seen to be contributing significantly to the determination o…
Applying large magnetic fields to gain access to the hyperfine Paschen-Back regime can isolate three-level systems in a hot alkali metal vapors, thereby simplifying usually complex atom-light interactions. We use this method to make the first direct measurement of the $\vert\langle 5P\vert\vert er\vert\vert 5D\rangle\vert$ matrix element in $^{87}$Rb. An analytic model with only three levels accurately models the experimental electromagnetically induced transparency spectra and extracted Rabi frequencies are used to determine the dipole matrix element. We measure $\vert\langle 5P_{3/2}\vert\ve…
We observe a density-dependent collective suppression of optical pumping between the hyperfine ground states in an array of submicrometer-sized clouds of cold rubidium atoms. The suppressed Raman transition rate can be explained by strong resonant dipole-dipole interactions that are enhanced by increasing atom density. The observations are consistent with stochastic electrodynamics simulations that incorporate the effects of the nonlinear population transfer via internal atomic levels embedded in a coupled-dipole model.
We report the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole hyperfine coupling constants of 6 P_{3/2} state of ^{133} Cs(I= {7/2}) obtained from the relativistic coupled cluster (RCC) method. To our knowledge, no prior electric quadrupole hyperfine CC calculation is available for ^{133} Cs(6 P_{3/2}) state. Our computed magnetic dipole (A) and electric quadrupole (B) coupling constants are in excellent agreement with the experiment.
Dipole-dipole interactions between helium atoms in Rydberg-Stark states with principal quantum number $n=53$ and approximately linear Stark energy shifts, resulting from induced electric dipole moments of approximately 7900 D, have been investigated experimentally. The experiments were performed in pulsed supersonic metastable helium beams, with particle number densities of up to $\sim10^9$ cm$^{-3}$. In the presence of amplitude-modulated, radio-frequency electric fields, changes in the spectral intensity distributions associated with the transitions to these states that are attributed to dip…
The static and dynamic electric-dipole polarizabilities and tune-out wavelengths for the ground state of Cs atoms are calculated by using a semiempirical relativistic configuration interaction plus core polarization approach. By considering the hyperfine splittings, the static and dynamic polarizabilities, hyperfine Stark shifts, and tune-out wavelengths of the hyperfine components of the ground level of $^{133}$Cs atoms are determined. It is found that the hyperfine shifts of the first primary tune-out wavelengths are about $-$0.0135 nm and 0.0106 nm, which are very close to the hyperfine int…
Atomistic tight-binding (TB) simulations are performed to calculate the Stark shift of the hyperfine coupling for a single Arsenic (As) donor in Silicon (Si). The role of the central-cell correction is studied by implementing both the static and the non-static dielectric screenings of the donor potential, and by including the effect of the lattice strain close to the donor site. The dielectric screening of the donor potential tunes the value of the quadratic Stark shift parameter ($η_2$) from -1.3 $\times$ 10$^{-3} μ$m$^2$/V$^2$ for the static dielectric screening to -1.72 $\times$ 10$^{-3} μ$…
We investigate the effect of far-off-resonant trapping light on ultracold bosonic RbCs molecules. We use kHz-precision microwave spectroscopy to measure the differential AC Stark shifts between the ground and first excited rotational levels of the molecule with hyperfine-state resolution. We demonstrate through both experiment and theory that coupling between neighboring hyperfine states manifests in rich structure with many avoided crossings. This coupling may be tuned by rotating the polarization of the linearly polarized trapping light. A combination of spectroscopic and parametric heating …
We report on a precision measurement of the $D$ line tune-out wavelength of $^{87}$Rubidium in the hyperfine ground state $|F=1, m_F=0,\pm1 \rangle$ manifold at 790 nm, where the scalar ac Stark shifts of the $D_1$ and the $D_2$ lines cancel. This wavelength is sensitive to usually neglected contributions from vector and tensor ac Stark shifts, transitions to higher principle quantum numbers, and core electrons. The ac Stark shift is probed by Kapitza-Dirac scattering of a Rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice in free space and controlled magnetic environment. …
We have employed the relativistic coupled cluster theory to calculate the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole hyperfine constants for the ground and low lying excited states of singly ionized magnesium. Comparison with experimental and the other theoretical results are done and predictions are also made for a few low lying excited states which could be of interest. We have made comparative studies of the important many body effects contributing to the hyperfine constants for the different states of the ion.
We report high-precision measurements on the thallium fluoride $\tilde{J} = 1$ hyperfine manifold of the $B^3Π_1$ ($ν= 0$) state. This state is of special interest because it is central to an optical cycling scheme that is envisioned to play an important role in enhancing the sensitivity of the CeNTREX nuclear Schiff-moment experiment presently under construction. The measurements are made by monitoring the fluorescence induced by narrow-band laser excitation of a cryogenic molecular beam. We use a multipass arrangement of the laser beam to enhance fluorescence. When viewed with a camera, we c…
We apply relativistic many-body methods to compute static differential polarizabilities for transitions inside the ground-state hyperfine manifolds of monovalent atoms and ions. Knowing this transition polarizability is required in a number of high-precision experiments, such as microwave atomic clocks and searches for CP-violating permanent electric dipole moments. While the traditional polarizability arises in the second-order of interaction with the externally-applied electric field, the differential polarizability involves additional contribution from the hyperfine interaction of atomic el…
We demonstrate that the differential ac-Stark shift of a ground-state hyperfine transition in an optical trap can be eliminated by using properly polarized trapping light. We use the vector polarizability of an alkali-metal atom to produce a polarization-dependent ac-Stark shift that resembles a Zeeman shift. We study a transition from the |2S1/2,F=2,mF=-2> to the |2S1/2,F=1,mF=-1> state of 7Li to observe 0.59+-0.02 Hz linewidth with interrogation time of 2 s and 0.82+-0.06 s coherence time of a superposition state. Implications of the narrow linewidth and the long coherence time for precision…
We present measurements of Stark interference in the 6$^1S_0$ $\rightarrow$ 6$^3P_1$ transition in $^{199}$Hg, a process whereby a static electric field $E$ mixes magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole couplings into an electric dipole transition, leading to $E$-linear energy shifts similar to those produced by a permanent atomic electric dipole moment (EDM). The measured interference amplitude, $a_{SI}$ = $(a_{M1} + a_{E2})$ = (5.8 $\pm$ 1.5)$\times 10^{-9}$ (kV/cm)$^{-1}$, agrees with relativistic, many-body predictions and confirms that earlier central-field estimates are a factor of 10 to…
Stark shifts of potassium and rubidium D1 lines have been measured with high precision by Miller et al [1]. In this work, we combine these measurements with our all-order calculations to determine the values of the electric-dipole matrix elements for the 4p_j-3d_j' transitions in K and for the 5p_j-4d_j' transitions in Rb to high precision. The 4p_1/2-3d_3/2 and 5p_1/2-4d_3/2 transitions contribute on the order of 90% to the respective polarizabilities of the np_1/2 states in K and Rb, and the remaining 10% can be accurately calculated using the relativistic all-order method. Therefore, the co…
We measure the hyperfine structure of $nP_{1/2}$ Rydberg states using mm-wave spectroscopy on an ensemble of laser-cooled $^{85}$Rb atoms. Systematic uncertainties in our measurement from the Zeeman splittings induced by stray magnetic fields and dipole-dipole interactions between two Rydberg atoms are factored in with the obtained statistical uncertainty. Our final measurement of the $nP_{1/2}$ hyperfine coupling constant is $A_{\text{hfs}}=1.443(31)$~GHz. This measurement is useful for studies of long-range Rydberg molecules, Rydberg electrometry, and quantum simulation with dipole-dipole in…
We have measured the Stark shift of the $A^2Π_{1/2} - X^2Σ^+$ transition in YbF. We use a molecular beam triple resonance method, with two laser transitions acting as pump and probe, assisted by an rf transition that tags a single hyperfine transition of the X state. After subtracting the known ground state Stark shift, we obtain a value of $70.3(1.5) $Hz/(V/cm)$^2$ for the static electric polarizability of the state $A^2Π_{1/2}(J=1/2,f)$. From this we calculate a value $μ_e=2.46(3)$D for the electric dipole moment of the $A^2Π_{1/2}(v=0)$ state.
We used a Cs atomic fountain frequency standard to measure the Stark shift on the ground state hyperfine transiton frequency in cesium (9.2 GHz) due to the electric field generated by the blackbody radiation. The measures relative shift at 300 K is -1.43(11)e-14 and agrees with our theoretical evaluation -1.49(07)e-14. This value differs from the currently accepted one -1.69(04)e-14. The difference has a significant implication on the accuracy of frequency standards, in clocks comparison, and in a variety of high precision physics tests such as the time stability of fundamental constants.
In this study, we investigated the hyperfine structure of 43 spectral lines of atomic thulium. We analyzed Fourier-transform spectra in the wavelength range from 700 nm to 2250 nm, which corresponds to the wavenumber range from 14300 cm-1 to 4440 cm-1, respectively. The excited thulium atoms were generated in a hollow-cathode lamp. As a result of this investigation, the magnetic-dipole hyperfine constant A of 17 fine structure levels have been determined experimentally, 14 of them for the first time. The magnetic-dipole hyperfine constant values of the three remaining levels, reported in the l…
The linear Stark effect for the first excited state of the hydrogen atom shows that, in the unperturbed states, the atom has a permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of magnitude 3eao (ao is Bohr radius). The EDM is not induce by the external field but is inherent behavior of the atom. But the calculation of quantum mechanics tells us that unperturbed states of hydrogen atom have no EDM! In the effect, two of four states have no energy shift. What are the EDM of the hydrogen atoms in the two states? Quantum mechanics can not answer the problem. The statement that the EDM of the two states is p…
This study addresses the effect of the magnetic hyperfine interaction on the relativistic H1s wave functions. These are used to calculate the electric, magnetic, and confinement force densities acting on the 1s electron. The magnetic field couples Dirac equations for different angular momenta. These are solved numerically for the hyperfine singlet and triplet, as well as for a classical magnetic dipole. In the singlet ground state the hyperfine interaction shifts the electron density toward the proton. A similar shift is found for the classical dipole, and an opposite shift for the triplet. Th…
Hyperfine-structure constants of odd Ra$^{+}$ due to the interactions of nuclear magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, and magnetic octupole moments with the electrons are investigated in the framework of relativistic coupled-cluster method within single- and double-excitation approximation. The calculated energies and magnetic dipole hyperfine-structure constants $A$ exhibit a good agreement with available experimental values. Combining with the experimental electric quadrupole hyperfine-structure constant, we also extracted the electric quadrupole moments $Q$ of $^{209,211,221,223}$Ra. Our $…
In the present work, the effect of AC-Stark shift (i.e. light-shift) in optical dipole trap on in-situ absorption probe imaging of the trapped atoms has been investigated. We have calculated the light-shift of various energy levels of $^{87}$Rb atoms relevant for trapping in an optical dipole trap (ODT). The spatial varying intensity of the ODT beam results in position dependent light-shift (i.e. AC-Stark shift). Such modifications in the energy levels of the atom result in modification in the absorption cross-section, which finally modifies the optical density (OD) in in-situ absorption imagi…
The motional electric field experienced by an H2+ ion moving in a magnetic field induces an electric dipole, so that one-photon dipole transitions between rovibrational states become allowed. Field induced spontaneous decay rates are calculated for a wide range of states. For an ion stored in a high-field (B ~ 10 T) Penning trap, it is shown that the lifetimes of excited rovibrational states can be shortened by typically 1-3 orders of magnitude by placing the ion in a large cyclotron orbit. This can greatly facilitate recently proposed [E. G. Myers, Phys. Rev. A 98, 010101 (2018)] high-precisi…
We report on hyperfine-resolved spectroscopic measurements of the electric-dipole forbidden 5$p_{3/2} \to 8p_{1/2}$ transition in a sample of ultracold $^{87}$Rb atoms. The hyperfine selection rules enable the weak magnetic-dipole (M1) contribution to the transition strength to be distinguished from the much stronger electric-quadrupole (E2) contribution. An upper limit on the M1 transition strength is determined that is about 50 times smaller than an earlier experimental determination. We also calculate the expected value of the M1 matrix element and find that it is less than the upper limit …
Cold atoms in highly excited Rydberg states are promising candidates to implement quantum logic gates of a quantum computer via long-range dipole-dipole interaction. Two-qubit gates require a controlled interaction of only two close Rydberg atoms. We report on the first spectroscopic observation of the resonant dipole-dipole interaction between two cold rubidium Rydberg atoms confined in a small laser excitation volume. The interaction strength was controlled by fine-tuning of the Rydberg levels into a Forster resonance using the Stark effect. The observed resonance line shapes are in good agr…
Energy levels, magnetic dipole, and electric quadrupole hyperfine structure of the superheavy element rutherfordium (Rf, $Z$=104) and its first three ions are calculated using a combination of the configuration interaction, coupled-cluster single-doubles, and many-body perturbation theory techniques. The results are to be used in future interpretations of the measurements in terms of nuclear magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole momenta. To have a guide on the accuracy of the study, we perform similar calculations for hafnium (Hf, $Z$=72) and its ions. Hf is a lighter analog of Rf with a sim…
Experimental and theoretical studies of the effects of weak radio-frequency electric fields on Rydberg-Stark states with electric dipole moments as large as 10000 D are reported. High-resolution laser spectroscopic studies of Rydberg states with principal quantum number $n=52$ and $53$ were performed in pulsed supersonic beams of metastable helium with the excited atoms detected by pulsed electric field ionisation. Experiments were carried out in the presence of sinusoidally oscillating electric fields with frequencies of 20~MHz, amplitudes of up to 120~mV/cm, and dc offsets of up to 4.4~V/cm.…
The ac Stark effect was used to induce resonant energy transfer between translationally cold Rydberg atoms. The Rb Rydberg atoms were obtained by laser excitation of cold atoms from a magneto-optical trap. Using two-photon microwave spectroscopy of the 49s_{1/2}-50s_{1/2} transition, the field strength of a 28.5 GHz dressing field was calibrated. When this dressing field was set at specific field strengths, the two-atom dipole-dipole process 43d_{5/2} + 43d_{5/2} -> 45p_{3/2} + 41f was dramatically enhanced, due to induced degeneracy of the initial and final states. A series of observed resona…
Results of numerical Monte Carlo simulations for the Stark-tuned Förster resonance and dipole blockade between two to five cold rubidium Rydberg atoms in various spatial configurations are presented. The effects of the atoms' spatial uncertainties on the resonance amplitude and spectra are investigated. The feasibility of observing coherent Rabi-like population oscillations at a Förster resonance between two cold Rydberg atoms is analyzed. Spectra and the fidelity of the Rydberg dipole blockade are calculated for various experimental conditions, including nonzero detuning from the Förster reso…
We show that combined permanent and induced electric dipole interactions of polar and polarizable molecules with collinear electric fields lead to a sui generis topology of the corresponding Stark energy surfaces and of other observables - such as alignment and orientation cosines - in the plane spanned by the permanent and induced dipole interaction parameters. We find that the loci of the intersections of the surfaces can be traced analytically and that the eigenstates as well as the number of their intersections can be characterized by a single integer index. The value of the index, distinc…
We demonstrate the cancellation of the differential ac Stark shift of the microwave hyperfine clock transition in trapped $^{87}$Rb atoms. Recent progress in metrology exploits so-called "magic wavelengths," whereby an atomic ensemble can be trapped with laser light whose wavelength is chosen so that both levels of an optical atomic transition experience identical ac Stark shifts. Similar magic-wavelength techniques are not possible for the microwave hyperfine transitions in the alkalis, due to their simple electronic structure. We show, however, that ac Stark shift cancellation is indeed achi…
We report our detailed analysis of a table-top system for the measurement of the weak-force-induced electric dipole moment of a ground state hyperfine transition carried out in an atomic beam geometry. We describe an experimental configuration of conductors for application of orthogonal r.f. and static electric fields, with cavity enhancement of the r.f. field amplitude, that allows confinement of the r.f. field to a region in which the static fields are uniform and well-characterized. We carry out detailed numerical simulations of the field modes, and analyze the expected magnitude of statist…
Energies of np (n=6-9), ns (n=7-9), nd (n=6-8), and nf (n=5-6) states in Tl I and Pb II are obtained using relativistic many-body perturbation theory. Reduced matrix elements, oscillator strengths, transition rates, and lifetimes are determined for the 72 possible electric-dipole transitions. Electric-quadrupole and magnetic-dipole matrix elements are evaluated to obtain np(3/2) - mp(1/2) (n,m=6,7) transition rates. Hyperfine constants A are evaluated for a number of states in 205Tl. First-, second-, third-, and all-order corrections to the energies and matrix elements and first- and second-or…
Ultracold molecules with both electron spin and an electric dipole moment offer new possibilities in quantum science. We use density-functional theory to calculate hyperfine coupling constants for a selection of molecules important in this area, including RbSr, LiYb, RbYb, CaF and SrF. We find substantial hyperfine coupling constants for the fermionic isotopes of the alkaline-earth and Yb atoms. We discuss the hyperfine level patterns and Zeeman splittings expected for these molecules. The results will be important both to experiments aimed at forming ultracold open-shell molecules and to thei…
A recently implemented relativistic four-component configuration interaction approach to study ${\cal{P}}$- and ${\cal{T}}$-odd interaction constants in atoms and molecules is employed to determine the electron electric dipole moment effective electric field in the $Ω=1$ first excited state of the ThO molecule. We obtain a value of $E_{\text{eff}} = 75.6 \left[\frac{\rm GV}{\rm cm}\right]$ with an estimated error bar of $3\%$ and $10\%$ smaller than a previously reported result [arXiv:1308.0414 [physics.atom-ph]]. Using the same wavefunction model we obtain an excitation energy of $T_v^{Ω=1} =…
A large-scale relativistic configuration-interaction (CI) calculation is performed for the magnetic-dipole and the electric-quadrupole hyperfine structure splitting in ^{7,6}Li and ^9Be^+. Numerical results for the 2^2S, 3^2S, 2^2P_{1/2}, and 2^2P_{3/2} states are reported. The CI calculation based on the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian is supplemented with separate treatments of the QED, nuclear-magnetization distribution, recoil, and negative-continuum effects.
We report measurements of optically detected magnetic resonance spectra of ensembles of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamonds in the presence of strain and DC external electric fields. The Stark shift of the spectral lines is stronger when the axial magnetic field along the NV centers quantization axis is minimized. The shift is also enhanced at avoided crossings between the hyperfine levels at an axial field of 77 uT. Since the intrinsic strain in the diamond also induces a Stark shift, we are able to calculate the magnitude and direction of the strain within the crysta…
The energy levels and electric dipole ($E1$) matrix elements of the ground state and low-lying excited states of Be atoms are calculated using the relativistic configuration interaction plus core polarization (RCICP) method. The static and dynamic $E1$, magnetic dipole ($M1$) and electric quadrupole ($E2$) polarizabilities as well as the hyperpolarizabilities of the $2s^2~^1S_0$ and $2s2p~^3P_0$ states are determined. Two magic wavelengths, 300.03 and 252.28 nm, of $2s^2~^1S_0 \rightarrow 2s2p~^3P_0$ clock transition are found. Then, the multipolar and nonlinear Stark shifts of the clock trans…
We perform precision microwave spectroscopy--aided by Stark deceleration--to reveal the low magnetic field behavior of OH in its ^2Π_{3/2} ro-vibronic ground state, identifying two field-insensitive hyperfine transitions suitable as qubits and determining a differential Lande g-factor of 1.267(5)\times10^{-3} between opposite parity components of the Λ-doublet. The data are successfully modeled with an effective hyperfine Zeeman Hamiltonian, which we use to make a tenfold improvement of the magnetically sensitive, astrophysically important ΔF=\pm1 satellite-line frequencies, yielding 172052988…
