We demonstrate a technique for directly measuring the quadratic Zeeman shift using stimulated Raman transitions. The quadratic Zeeman shift has been measured yielding [delta][nju] = 1296.8 +/-3.3 Hz/G^{2} for magnetically insensitive sublevels (5S1/2, F = 2,mF = 0 -> 5S1/2, F = 3,mF = 0) of ^{85}Rb by compensating the magnetic eld and cancelling the ac Stark shift. We also measured the cancellation ratio of the differential ac Stark shift due to the imbalanced Raman beams by using two pairs of Raman beams ([sigma]^{+}, [sigma]^{+}) and it is 1:3.67 when the one-photon detuning is 1.5 GHz in the experiment.
In this work, we demonstrate the importance of considering correlations between degenerate Zeeman sublevels that develop in dense atomic ensembles. In order to do this, we develop a set of equations capable of simulating large numbers of atoms while still incorporating correlations between degenerate Zeeman sublevels. This set of equations is exact in the single-photon limit, and may be interpreted as a generalization of the coupled harmonic oscillator equations typically used the literature. Using these equations, we demonstrate that in sufficiently dense systems, correlations between Zeeman …
Resonance transitions between the Zeeman sublevels of optically-polarized Rb atoms traveling through a spatially periodic magnetic field are investigated in a radio-frequency (rf) range of sub-MHz. The atomic motion induces the resonance when the Zeeman splitting is equal to the frequency at which the moving atoms feel the magnetic field oscillating. Additional temporal oscillation of the spatially periodic field splits a motion-induced resonance peak into two by an amount of this oscillation frequency. At higher oscillation frequencies, it is more suitable to consider that the resonance is ma…
Previously, we had proposed an optically-pumped five-level Gain EIT (GEIT) system, which has a transparency dip superimposed on a gain profile and exhibits a negative dispersion suitable for the white-light-cavity signal-recycling (WLC-SR) scheme of the interferometeric gravitational wave detector [Phys. Rev. D. 92, 082002 (2015)]. Using this system as the negative dispersion medium (NDM) in the WLC-SR, we get an enhancement in the quantum noise (QN) limited sensitivity-bandwidth product by a factor of ~18. Here, we show how to realize this GEIT system in a realistic platform, using non-degene…
We apply optical pumping to prepare the lithium beam of our atom interferometer in a single hyperfine-Zeeman sublevel: we use two components of the D1-line for pumping the 7Li atoms in a dark state F,mF=+2 (or -2) sublevel. The optical pumping efficiency has been characterized by two techniques: state-selective laser atom deflection or magnetic dephasing of the atom interferometer signals. The first technique has not achieved a high sensitivity, because of a limited signal to noise ratio, but magnetic dephasing signals have shown that about 95% of the population has been transferred in the aim…
A method of sideband Raman cooling to the vibrational ground state of the $m=0$ Zeeman sublevel in a far-detuned two-dimensional optical lattice is proposed. In our scheme, the Raman coupling between vibrational manifolds of the adjacent Zeeman sublevels is shifted to the red sideband due to the ac Stark effect induced by a weak pump field. Thus, cooling and optical pumping to $m=0$ is achieved by purely optical means with coplanar cw laser beams. The optical lattice and cooling parameters are estimated in the framework of simple theoretical models. An application of the transverse sideband co…
Specific types of atomic coherences between Zeeman sublevels can be generated and detected using a method based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation with frequency modulated light. Linearly polarized, frequency modulated light is employed to selectively generate ground-state coherences between Zeeman sublevels for which $Δm=2$ and $Δm=4$ in $^{85}$Rb and $^{87}$Rb atoms, and additionally $Δm=6$ in $^{85}$Rb. The atomic coherences are detected with a separate, unmodulated probe light beam. Separation of the pump and probe beams enables independent investigation of the processes of creation and…

Motional ground state cooling and internal state preparation are important elements for quantum logic spectroscopy (QLS), a class of quantum information processing. Since QLS does not require the high gate fidelities usually associated with quantum computation and quantum simulation, it is possible to make simplifying choices in ion species and quantum protocols at the expense of some fidelity. Here, we report sideband cooling and motional state detection protocols for $^{138}$Ba$^+$ of sufficient fidelity for QLS without an extremely narrowband laser or the use of a species with hyperfine str…
Nonlinear magneto-optical Faraday rotation (NMOR) on the potassium D1 and D2 lines was used to study Zeeman relaxation rates in an antirelaxation paraffin-coated 3-cm diameter potassium vapor cell. Intrinsic Zeeman relaxation rates of $γ^{NMOR}/2π=2.0(6) {\rm Hz}$ were observed. The relatively small hyperfine intervals in potassium lead to significant differences in NMOR in potassium compared to rubidium and cesium. Using laser optical pumping, widths and frequency shifts were also determined for transitions between ground-state hyperfine sublevels of $^{39}$K atoms contained in the same paraf…
Molecular hydrogen ions are of metrological relevance due to the possibility of precise theoretical evaluation of their spectrum and of external-field-induced shifts. We report the results of the calculations of the rate of laser-induced electric quadrupole transitions between a large set of ro-vibrational states of ${\rm H_2^+}$. The hyperfine and Zeeman structure of the E2 transition spectrum and the effects of the laser polarization are treated in detail. We also present the nuclear spin-electron spin coupling constants, computed with a precision 10 times higher than previously.
In recent years, unshielded atomic systems have been attracting researchers' attention, in which decoherence is one of the major problems, especially for high precision measurements. The nonlinear Zeeman effect and magnetic field gradient are the main decoherence sources of atomic electron spin in Earth-field range. Here, we propose a method to cancel out the two dominant broadening effects simultaneously by an all-optical dynamic decoupling approach based on Raman scattering in the 87Rb Zeeman sublevels. By adjusting the parameters of the Raman lasers, we realize spin control along an arbitra…
We demonstrate that transitions between Zeeman-split sublevels of Rb atoms are resonantly induced by the motion of the atoms (velocity: about 100 m/s) in a periodic magnetostatic field (period: 1 mm) when the Zeeman splitting corresponds to the frequency of the magnetic field experienced by the moving atoms. A circularly polarized laser beam polarizes Rb atoms with a velocity selected using the Doppler effect and detects their magnetic resonance in a thin cell, to which the periodic field is applied with the arrays of parallel current-carrying wires.
We describe the so-called "Lambda-Zeeman method" to investigate individual hyperfine transitions between Zeeman sublevels of atoms in an external magnetic field of 0.1 mT - 0.25 T. Atoms are confined in a nanocell with thickness L = Lambda, where Lambda is the resonant wavelength (794 nm or 780 nm for D1 or D2 line of Rb). Narrow resonances in the transmission spectrum of the nanocell are split into several components in a magnetic field; their frequency positions and probabilities depend on the B-field. Possible applications are described, such as magnetometers with nanometric spatial resolut…
We report an improved measurement of the Landé g factor of the 5D5/2 state of singly ionized barium. Measurements were performed on single Doppler-cooled 138Ba+ ions in linear Paul traps using two similar, independent apparatuses. Transitions between Zeeman sublevels of the 6S1/2 and 5D5/2 states were driven with two independent, stabilized radio-frequency synthesizers using a dedicated electrode within each ion trap chamber. State detection within each Zeeman manifold was achieved with a frequency-stabilized fiber laser operating at 1.76 microns. By calculating the ratio of the two Zeeman spl…
We have implemented the so-called $λ$-Zeeman technique (LZT) to investigate individual hyperfine transitions between Zeeman sublevels of the Rb atoms in a strong external magnetic field $B$ in the range of $2500 - 5000$ G (recently it was established that LZT is very convenient for the range of $10 - 2500$ G). Atoms are confined in a nanometric thin cell (NTC) with the thickness $L = λ$, where $λ$ is the resonant wavelength 794 nm for Rb $D_1$ line. Narrow velocity selective optical pumping (VSOP) resonances in the transmission spectrum of the NTC are split into several components in a magneti…
An atom interferometer based on a Stern-Gerlach beam splitter is proposed. Atom scattering from a combination of magnetic quadrupole and homogeneous magnetic fields is considered. Using Raman transitions, atoms are coherently excited into and de-excited from sublevels having nonzero magnetic quantum numbers. The spatial regions in which the atoms are in such sublevels are small and have magnetic fields designed to have constant gradients. Therefore, the atoms experience position-independent accelerations, and the aberration of the coherently separated and recombined atomic beams remains small.…
We report the first observation of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an isotopically purified Nd$^{3+}$:YLiF$_4$ crystal. This crystal demonstrates inhomogeneous broadening of optical transitions of about 35 MHz. EIT is observed in a symmetrical $Λ$-like system formed by two hyperfine sublevels of the ground state corresponding to a zero first order Zeeman (ZEFOZ) transition and a hyperfine sublevel of the excited state, which is not coupled to other ground-state sublevels. It is found that transmission of the probe field as a function of the two-photon detuning demonstrates a …
We present the first terrestrial measurement of the Lande g factor of the 5D5/2 state of singly ionized barium. Measurements were performed on single Doppler-cooled 138Ba+ ions in a linear Paul trap. A frequency-stabilized fiber laser with nominal wavelength 1.762 um was scanned across the 6S1/2<->5D5/2 transition to spectroscopically resolve transitions between Zeeman sublevels of the ground and excited states. From the relative positions of the four narrow transitions observed at several different values for the applied magnetic field, we find a value of 1.2020+/-0.0005 for g of 5D5/2.
In a recent letter [Auzinsh {\it{et. al.}} (physics/0403097)] we have analyzed the noise properties of an idealized atomic magnetometer that utilizes spin squeezing induced by a continuous quantum nondemolition measurement. Such a magnetometer measures spin precession of $N$ atomic spins by detecting optical rotation of far-detuned probe light. Here we consider maximally squeezed probe light, and carry out a detailed derivation of the contribution to the noise in a magnetometric measurement due to the differential AC Stark shift between Zeeman sublevels arising from quantum fluctuations of the…
With the advent of high-precision frequency combs that can bridge large frequency intervals, new possibilities have opened up for the laser spectroscopy of atomic transitions. Here, we show that laser spectroscopic techniques can also be used to determine the ground-state g factor of a bound electron: Our proposal is based on a double-resonance experiment, where the spin state of a ground-state electron is constantly being read out by laser excitation to the atomic L shell, while the spin flip transitions are being induced simultaneously by a resonant microwave field, leading to a detection of…
We report on the improved measurement of the hyperfine structure of $4f^{12}(^3 H_6)5d_{5/2}6s^2$ $(J=9/2)$ excited state in Tm-169 which is involved in the second-stage laser cooling of Tm. To measure the absolute value of the hyperfine splitting interval we used Doppler-free frequency modulation saturated absorption spectroscopy of Tm atoms in a vapor cell. The sign of the hyperfine constant was determined independently by spectroscopy of laser cooled Tm atoms. The hyperfine constant of the level equals $A_J=-422.112(32)$ MHz that corresponds to the energy difference between two hyperfine su…
Due to the low sensitivity of the thulium optical clock to black-body radiation and good accuracy and stability estimations, it appears to be one of the most promising transportable optical clocks. One of the leading systematic effects for Tm clock transition, namely the second-order Zeeman effect, can be canceled by probing two clock transitions between different hyperfine levels of ground and metastable states during the clock operation. We prepare the atoms in $m_F=0$ state of both ground hyperfine levels simultaneously and excite alternately two clock transitions. Here we demonstrate effic…
We report on measurements of the differential polarizability between the nearly degenerate, opposite parity states in atomic dysprosium at 19797.96 cm$^{-1}$. The differential scalar and tensor polarizabilities due to additional states were measured for the $|M| = 7,...,10$ sublevels in $^{164}$Dy and $^{162}$Dy and determined to be $\bar{\boldsymbolα}_{\scriptscriptstyle BA}^{(0)} = 180\,(45)_\text{stat}\,(8)_\text{sys}$ $\text{mHz}/(\mathrm{V}/\mathrm{cm})^2$ and $\bar{\boldsymbolα}_{\scriptscriptstyle BA}^{(2)} = -163\,(65)_\text{stat}\,(5)_\text{sys}$ $\text{mHz}/(\mathrm{V}/\mathrm{cm})^2…
Two-photon transitions between atomic states of total electronic angular momentum $J_a=0$ and $J_b=1$ are forbidden when the photons are of the same energy. This selection rule is analogous to the Landau-Yang theorem in particle physics that forbids decays of vector particle into two photons. It arises because it is impossible to construct a total angular momentum $J_{2γ}=1$ quantum-mechanical state of two photons that is permutation symmetric, as required by Bose-Einstein statistics. In atoms with non-zero nuclear spin, the selection rule can be violated due to hyperfine interactions. Two dis…
We report on experimental and theoretical study of the nonlinear Faraday effect under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency at the 5$S_{1/2} \to 5P_{3/2} \to 5D_{5/2}$ two-photon transition in rubidium vapors. These transitions realize the inverted Y model which combines the $Λ$ and ladder systems. Strong nonlinearity allowing for large rotation angles of a probe beam tuned to the $S\to P$ transition was obtained by creation of quantum superpositions of magnetic sublevels (Zeeman coherences) in the rubidium ground state ($Λ$ scheme). Additionally, electromagnetically induced t…
