Electric polarizabilities of four low-J even-parity states and three low-J odd-parity states of atomic barium in the range $35,600 $ to $36,000\ $cm$^{-1}$ are investigated. The states of interest are excited (in an atomic beam) via an intermediate odd-parity state with a sequence of two laser pulses. The odd-parity states can be excited due to the Stark-induced mixing with even-parity states. The polarizabilities are measured via direct spectroscopy on the second-stage transition. Several states have tensor and scalar polarizabilities that exceed the values that might be expected from the known energy levels of barium by more than two orders of magnitude. Two of the Stark-induced transitions cannot be identified from the known energy spectrum of barium. The observations suggest the existence of as yet unidentified odd-parity energy states, whose energies and angular momenta are determined in the present experiment. A tentative identification of these states as [Xe]$6s8p ^3P_{0,2}$ is suggested.
The results of ab initio calculation of E1 amplitudes, lifetimes, and polarizabilities for several low-lying levels of ytterbium are reported. The effective Hamiltonian for the valence electrons has been constructed in the frame of CI+MBPT method and solutions of many electron equation are found.
We utilize accurate experimental data available in the literature to yield bounds on the polarizabilities of the ground and first excited states of atomic Yb. For the 6s^2 1S0 ground state, we find the polarizability alpha to be constrained to 134.4<alpha<144.2 in atomic units, while for the 6s6p 3P0 excited state we find 280.1<alpha<289.9. The uncertainty in each of these values is 1.0. These constraints provide a valuable check for ab initio and semi-empirical methods used to compute polarizabilities and other related properties in Yb.
Using recent high-precision measurements of electric dipole matrix elements of atomic cesium, we make an improved determination of the scalar ($α$) and vector ($β$) polarizabilities of the cesium $6s \ ^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow 7s \ ^2S_{1/2} $ transition calculated through a sum-over-states method. We report values of $α= -268.82 \ (30) \ a_0^3$ and $β= 27.139 \ (42) \ a_0^3$ with the highest precision to date. We find a discrepancy between our value of $β$ and the past preferred value, resulting in a significant shift in the value of the weak charge $Q_w$ of the cesium nucleus. Future work to re…
We present a measurement of the dynamic scalar and tensor polarizabilities of the excited state 3D1 in atomic ytterbium. The polarizabilities were measured by analyzing the spectral lineshape of the 408-nm 1S0->3D1 transition driven by a standing wave of resonant light in the presence of static electric and magnetic fields. Due to the interaction of atoms with the standing wave, the lineshape has a characteristic polarizability-dependent distortion. A theoretical model was used to simulate the lineshape and determine a combination of the polarizabilities of the ground and excited states by fit…
We apply relativistic many-body methods to compute static differential polarizabilities for transitions inside the ground-state hyperfine manifolds of monovalent atoms and ions. Knowing this transition polarizability is required in a number of high-precision experiments, such as microwave atomic clocks and searches for CP-violating permanent electric dipole moments. While the traditional polarizability arises in the second-order of interaction with the externally-applied electric field, the differential polarizability involves additional contribution from the hyperfine interaction of atomic el…
We measured the ground-state static electric-dipole polarizabilities of Cs, Rb, and K atoms using a three-nanograting Mach-Zehnder atom beam interferometer. Our measurements provide benchmark tests for atomic structure calculations and thus test the underlying theory used to interpret atomic parity non-conservation experiments. We measured $α_{\mathrm{Cs}} = 4πε_0 \times 59.45(11) Å^3$, $α_{\mathrm{Rb}} = 4πε_0 \times 47.44(9) Å^3$, and $α_{\mathrm{K}} = 4πε_0 \times 42.97(8) Å^3$. In atomic units, these measurements are $α_{\mathrm{Cs}} = 401.2(7)$, $α_{\mathrm{Rb}} = 320.1(6)$, and $α_{\math…
We report measurements of the $^{115}$In $7p_{1/2}$ and $7p_{3/2}$ scalar and tensor polarizabilities using two-step diode laser spectroscopy in an atomic beam. The scalar polarizabilities are one to two orders of magnitude larger than for lower lying indium states due to the close proximity of the $7p$ and $6d$ states. For the scalar polarizabilities, we find values (in atomic units) of $1.811(4) \times 10^5$ $a_0^3$ and $2.876(6) \times 10^5$ $a_0^3$ for the $7p_{1/2}$ and $7p_{3/2}$ states respectively. We estimate the smaller tensor polarizability component of the $7p_{3/2}$ state to be $-…
Atomic polarization phenomena impinge upon a number of areas and processes in physics. The dielectric constant and refractive index of any gas are examples of macroscopic properties that are largely determined by the dipole polarizability. When it comes to microscopic phenomena, the existence of alkaline-earth anions and the recently discovered ability of positrons to bind to many atoms are predominantly due to the polarization interaction. An imperfect knowledge of atomic polarizabilities is presently looming as the largest source of uncertainty in the new generation of optical frequency stan…
The electric polarizability and logarithmic mean-excitation energy are calculated for the deuteron using techniques introduced in atomic physics. These results are then used to improve limits on the atomic-deuterium frequency shift due to nuclear polarization in the unretarded dipole limit, as well as confirming previous results.
We present revised measurements of the static electric dipole polarizabilities of K, Rb, and Cs based on atom interferometer experiments presented in [Phys. Rev. A 2015, 92, 052513] but now re-analyzed with new calibrations for the magnitude and geometry of the applied electric field gradient. The resulting polarizability values did not change, but the uncertainties were significantly reduced. Then we interpret several measurements of alkali metal atomic polarizabilities in terms of atomic oscillator strengths $f_{ik}$, Einstein coefficients $A_{ik}$, state lifetimes $τ_{k}$, transition dipole…
The efficiency of optical trapping of ultracold atoms depend on the atomic dynamic dipole polarizability governing the atom-field interaction. In this article, we have calculated the real and imaginary parts of the dynamic dipole polarizability of dysprosium in the ground and first excited level. Due to the high electronic angular momentum of those two states, the polarizabilities possess scalar, vector and tensor contributions that we have computed, on a wide range of trapping wavelengths, using the sum-over-state formula. Using the same formalism, we have also calculated the $C_6$ coefficien…
Atomic properties of the 24 low-lying ns, np, nd, nf, and ng states in Th IV ion are calculated using the high-precision relativistic all-order method where all single, double, and partial triple excitations of the Dirac-Fock wave functions are included to all orders of perturbation theory. Recommended values are provided for a large number of electric-dipole matrix elements, oscillator strengths, transition rates, and lifetimes. Scalar polarizabilities of the ground and six excited states (5f_j, 6d_j, 7p_j, and 7s), and tensor polarizabilities of the 5f_j, 6d_j, 7p_{3/2} states of Th IV are e…
The dynamic polarizabilities of the 4s, 3d and 4p states of Ca$^+$, are calculated using a relativistic structure model. The wavelengths at which the Stark shifts between different pairs of transitions are zero are computed. Experimental determination of the magic wavelengths can be used to estimate the ratio of the $f_{3d_{J}\to 4p_{J'}}$ and $f_{4s_{1/2} \to 4p_{J'}}$ oscillator strengths. This could prove valuable in developing better atomic structure models and in particular lead to improved values of the polarizabilities needed in the evaluation of the blackbody radiation shift of the Ca$…
Experimental and theoretical study of dynamic polarizabilities in the $5S_{1/2}$-$5D_{5/2}$ clock transition in rubidium-87 and determination of E1 matrix elements
A systematic study of Ca+ atomic properties is carried out using high-precision relativistic all-order method where all single, double, and partial triple excitations of the Dirac-Fock wave functions are included to all orders of perturbation theory. Reduced matrix elements, oscillator strengths, transition rates, and lifetimes are determined for the levels up to n = 7. Recommended values and estimates of their uncertainties are provided for a large number of electric-dipole transitions. Electric-dipole scalar polarizabilities for the 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 4p, 5p, 3d, and 4d states and tensor polari…
The efficiency of optical trapping is determined by the atomic dynamic dipole polarizability, whose real and imaginary parts are associated with the potential energy and photon-scattering rate respectively. In this article we develop a formalism to calculate analytically the real and imaginary parts of the scalar, vector and tensor polarizabilities of lanthanide atoms. We assume that the sum-over-state formula only comprises transitions involving electrons in the valence orbitals like $6s$, $5d$, $6p$ or $7s$, while transitions involving $4f$ core electrons are neglected. Applying this formali…
The static-exchange model (SEM) and the modified static-exchange model (MSEM) recently introduced by Ray [1] is applied to study the elastic collision between two hydrogen-like atoms when both are in ground states considering the system as a four-body Coulomb problem in the center of mass frame, in which all the Coulomb interaction terms in direct and exchange channels are treated exactly. The SEM includes the non-adiabatic short-range effect due to electron-exchange. The MSEM added in it, the long-range effect due to induced dynamic dipole polarizabilities between the atoms e.g. the Van der W…
We analyze several possibilities for precisely measuring electronic transitions in atomic helium by the direct use of phase-stabilized femtosecond frequency combs. Because the comb is self-calibrating and can be shifted into the ultraviolet spectral region via harmonic generation, it offers the prospect of greatly improved accuracy for UV and far-UV transitions. To take advantage of this accuracy an ultracold helium sample is needed. For measurements of the triplet spectrum a magneto-optical trap (MOT) can be used to cool and trap metastable 2^3S state atoms. We analyze schemes for measuring t…
We use effective field theory to compute the influence of nuclear structure on precision calculations of atomic energy levels. As usual, the EFT's effective couplings correspond to the various nuclear properties (such as the charge radius, nuclear polarizabilities, Friar and Zemach moments {\it etc.}) that dominate its low-energy electromagnetic influence on its surroundings. By extending to spinning nuclei the arguments developed for spinless ones in {\tt arXiv:1708.09768}, we use the EFT to show -- to any fixed order in $Zα$ (where $Z$ is the atomic number and $α$ the fine-structure constant…
The forward doubly-virtual Compton scattering (VVCS) off the nucleon contains a wealth of information on nucleon structure, relevant to the calculation of the two-photon-exchange effects in atomic spectroscopy and electron scattering. We report on a complete next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculation of low-energy VVCS in chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT). Here we focus on the unpolarized VVCS amplitudes $T_1(ν, Q^2)$ and $T_2(ν, Q^2)$, and the corresponding structure functions $F_1(x, Q^2)$ and $F_2(x,Q^2)$. Our results are confronted, where possible, with "data-driven" dispersive evaluations o…
