The absolute frequency measurement for all of the hyperfine transitions of 6P1/2 -> 7S1/2 using a self-referencing frequency comb is reported. This transition can be used as a bench marker for the accurate atomic wave function, and then improve the calculation of the atomic parity- non-conservation (PNC). The frequency center is precisely determined by saturation spectroscopy utilizing a pair of the counter-propagating laser beams intersecting with atomic beam. Such a Doppler-free profile has been improved to 350 kHz in the absolute frequency measurement. The 7S1/2 state hyperfine splittings have also been deduced from our results.
A frequency-stabilized ultraviolet laser system, locked to the thallium resonant transition of 377.5 nm, was demonstrated using a novel bichromatic spectroscopy technique for tuning the zero-crossing laser-lock point. The atomic thallium system is a promising candidate in atomic parity violation and permanent electric dipole moment experiments, and its 377.5 nm 6P1/2->7S1/2 transition is important for thallium laser cooling and trapping experiment. The pressure shift, owing to the high pressure buffer gas of the hollow-cathode lamp, was observed using an atomic beam resonance as reference. Suc…
We report high-precision measurements on the thallium fluoride $\tilde{J} = 1$ hyperfine manifold of the $B^3Π_1$ ($ν= 0$) state. This state is of special interest because it is central to an optical cycling scheme that is envisioned to play an important role in enhancing the sensitivity of the CeNTREX nuclear Schiff-moment experiment presently under construction. The measurements are made by monitoring the fluorescence induced by narrow-band laser excitation of a cryogenic molecular beam. We use a multipass arrangement of the laser beam to enhance fluorescence. When viewed with a camera, we c…
The optical lattice clock NICT-Sr1 regularly reports calibration measurements of the international timescale TAI. By comparing measurement results to the reports of eight Primary Frequency Standards, we find the absolute frequency of the $^{87}\mathrm{Sr}$ clock transition to be f(Sr)=$429\,228\,004\,229\,873.082(76)$, with a fractional uncertainty of less than 1.8x10$^{-16}$ approaching the systematic limits of the best realization of SI second. Our result is consistent with other recent measurements and further supported by the loop closure over the absolute frequencies of $^{87}\mathrm{Sr}$…
We present absolute frequency measurement of the unperturbed P7 P7 O$_2$ B-band transition with relative standard uncertainty of $2\times10^{-11}$. We reached the level of accuracy typical for Doppler-free techniques, with Doppler-limited spectroscopy. The Doppler-limited shapes of the P7 P7 spectral line were measured with a frequency-stabilized cavity ring-down spectrometer referenced to an $^{88}$Sr optical atomic clock by an optical frequency comb.
We demonstrated for the first time the characterization of absolute frequency stability of three reference cavities by cross beating three laser beams which are independently locked to these reference cavities. This method shows the individual feature of each reference cavity, while conventional beatnote measurement between two cavities can only provide an upper bound. This method allows for numerous applications such as optimizing the performance of the reference cavity for optical clockwork.
The highly forbidden $^2$S$_{1/2} \rightarrow ^2$F$_{7/2}$ electric octupole transition in $^{171}$Yb$^+$ is a potential candidate for a redefinition of the SI second. We present a measurement of the absolute frequency of this optical transition, performed using a frequency link to International Atomic Time to provide traceability to the SI second. The $^{171}$Yb$^+$ optical frequency standard was operated for 76% of a 25-day period, with the absolute frequency measured to be 642 121 496 772 645.14(26) Hz. The fractional uncertainty of $4.0 \times 10 ^{-16}$ is comparable to that of the best p…
A two-step, two-color laser spectroscopy technique has been used to measure the hyperfine splitting of the 7p$_{1/2}$ excited state in $^{203}$Tl and $^{205}$Tl, as well as the isotope shift within the 7s$_{1/2}$ - 7p$_{1/2}$ transition. Our measured values for the hyperfine splittings, 2153.2(7) MHz (in $^{203}$Tl) and 2173.3(8) MHz (in $^{205}$Tl), each differ by 20 MHz from previously published values which quoted comparable precision. The transition isotope shift of $^{203}$Tl relative to $^{205}$Tl was measured to be 534.4(9) MHz. In our experiment, one laser was locked to the thallium gr…
We measured the absolute frequency of the $^1S_0$ - $^3P_0$ transition of $^{171}$Yb atoms confined in a one-dimensional optical lattice relative to the SI second. The determined frequency was 518 295 836 590 863.38(57) Hz. The uncertainty was reduced by a factor of 14 compared with our previously reported value in 2013 due to the significant improvements in decreasing the systematic uncertainties. This result is expected to contribute to the determination of a new recommended value for the secondary representations of the second.
We report the absolute frequency measurement of the unperturbed transition 1S0 - 3P0 at 578 nm in 171Yb realized in an optical lattice frequency standard. The absolute frequency is measured 518 295 836 590 863.55(28) Hz relative to a cryogenic caesium fountain with a fractional uncertainty of 5.4x10-16 . This value is in agreement with the ytterbium frequency recommended as a secondary representation of the second in the International System of Units.
The absolute frequencies of the hyperfine components of the R(26) 62-0 transition in molecular iodine at 501.7 nm are measured for the first time with an optical clockwork based on a femtosecond laser frequency comb generator. The set-up is composed of an Ar+ laser locked to a hyperfine component of the R(26) 62-0 transition detected in a continuously pumped low-pressure cell (0.33 Pa). The detected resonances show a linewidth of 45 kHz (half-width at half-maximum). The uncertainty of the frequency measurement is estimated to be 250 Hz.
We report absolute frequency measurements of the molecular iodine P(46) 5-4 $a_{1}$, $a_{10}$, and $a_{15}$ hyperfine transitions at 647 nm with a fiber-based frequency comb. The light source is based on a Littrow-type external-cavity diode laser. A frequency stability of 5 $\times$ 10$^{-12}$ at a 200 s integration time is achieved when the light source is stabilized to the P(46) 5-4 $a_{15}$ line. The pressure shift is determined to be -8.3(7) kHz/Pa. Our determination of the line centers reached a precision of 21 kHz. The light source can serve as a reference laser for lithium atom spectros…
We report the absolute frequency measurements of rubidium 5S-7S two-photon transitions with a cw laser digitally locked to an atomic transition and referenced to an optical frequency comb. The narrow, two-photon transition, 5S-7S (760 nm) insensitive to first order in a magnetic field, is a promising candidate for frequency reference. The performed tests yield the transition frequency with accuracy better than reported previously.
We present a measurement of the absolute frequency of the 5s$^2$ $^1$S$_0$ to 5s5p $^3$P$_0$ transition in $^{87}$Sr, which is a secondary representation of the SI second. We describe the optical lattice clock apparatus used for the measurement, and we focus in detail on how its systematic frequency shifts are evaluated with a total fractional uncertainty of $1 \times 10^{-17}$. Traceability to the International System of Units is provided via comparison to International Atomic Time (TAI). Gathering data over 5- and 15-day periods, with the lattice clock operating on average 74$\%$ of the time…
We measured the absolute frequency of the optical clock transition 1S0 (F = 1/2) - 3P0 (F = 1/2) of 171Yb atoms confined in a one-dimensional optical lattice and it was determined to be 518 295 836 590 863.5(8.1) Hz. The frequency was measured against Terrestrial Time (TT; the SI second on the geoid) by using an optical frequency comb of which the frequency was phase-locked to an H-maser as a flywheel oscillator traceable to TT. The magic wavelength was also measured as 394 798.48(79) GHz. The results are in good agreement with two previous measurements of other institutes within the specified…
The absolute frequency of the 1S0-3P0 clock transition of 87Sr has been measured to be 429 228 004 229 873.65 (37) Hz using lattice-confined atoms, where the fractional uncertainty of 8.6x10-16 represents one of the most accurate measurements of an atomic transition frequency to date. After a detailed study of systematic effects, which reduced the total systematic uncertainty of the Sr lattice clock to 1.5x10-16, the clock frequency is measured against a hydrogen maser which is simultaneously calibrated to the US primary frequency standard, the NIST Cs fountain clock, NIST-F1. The comparison i…
We report on measurements on the 5S-6P rubidium transition frequencies for rubidium isotopes with an absolute uncertainty of better than \SI{450}{kHz} for the 5S $\rightarrow$ 6P$_{1/2}$ transition and \SI{20}{kHz} for the 5S $\rightarrow$ 6P$_{3/2}$ transition, achieved by saturation absorption spectroscopy. From the results we derive the hyperfine splitting with an accuracy of \SI{460}{kHz} and \SI{30}{kHz}, respectively. We also verify the literature values for the isotope shifts as well as magnetic dipole constant and the electric quadrupole constant.
We report on the first absolute transition frequency measurement at the 10^{-15} level with a single, laser-cooled 40Ca+ ion in a linear Paul trap. For this measurement, a frequency comb is referenced to the transportable Cs atomic fountain clock of LNE-SYRTE and is used to measure the S1/2-D5/2 electric-quadrupole transition frequency. After the correction of systematic shifts, the clock transition frequency f_Ca+ = 411 042 129 776 393.2 (1.0) Hz is obtained, which corresponds to a fractional uncertainty within a factor of three of the Cs standard. Future improvements are expected to lead to …
We demonstrate a double optical frequency reference (1529 nm and 1560 nm) for the telecom C-band using $^{87}$Rb modulation transfer spectroscopy. The two reference frequencies are defined by the 5S$_{1/2} F=2 \rightarrow $ 5P$_{3/2} F'=3$ two-level and 5S$_{1/2} F=2 \rightarrow $ 5P$_{3/2} F'=3 \rightarrow $ 4D$_{5/2} F"=4$ ladder transitions. We examine the sensitivity of the frequency stabilization to probe power and magnetic field fluctuations, calculate its frequency shift due to residual amplitude modulation, and estimate its shift due to gas collisions. The short-term Allan deviation wa…
Transition frequencies were determined for transitions in Ra in an atomic beam and for reference lines in Te$_2$ molecules in a vapor cell. The absolute frequencies were calibrated against a GPS stabilized Rb-clock by means of an optical frequency comb. The 7s$^2\,^1$S$_0$(F = 1/2)-7s7p$\,^1$P$_1$(F = 3/2) transition in $^{225}$Ra was determined to be $621\,042\,124(2)\,$MHz. The measurements provide input for designing efficient and robust laser cooling of Ra atoms in preparation of a search for a permanent electric dipole moment in Ra isotopes.
We present a solid-state laser system that generates over 200 mW of continuous-wave, narrowband light, tunable from 316.3 nm - 317.7 nm and 318.0 nm - 319.3 nm. The laser is based on commercially available fiber amplifiers and optical frequency doubling technology, along with sum frequency generation in a periodically poled stoichiometric lithium tantalate crystal. The laser frequency is stabilized to an atomic-referenced high finesse optical transfer cavity. Using a GPS-referenced optical frequency comb we measure a long term frequency instability of $<$35 kHz for timescales between $10^{-3}$…
We report the development of a method for eliminating background-induced systematic shifts affecting precise measurements of saturation absorption signals. With this technique, we measured the absolute frequency of the $6s^2~^1\text{S}_0 \to 6s6p~^3\text{P}_1$ transition in $^{201a}\text{Hg}$ ($F=3/2\to F'=5/2$) to be $1181541111051(83)$~kHz. The measurement was referenced with an optical frequency comb synchronized to the frequency of the local representation of the UTC. This specific atomic line is situated on the steep slope of the Doppler background at room temperature, which results in fr…
We describe experiments with an optical frequency standard based on a laser cooled $^{171}$Yb$^+$ ion confined in a radiofrequency Paul trap. The electric-quadrupole transition from the $^2S_{1/2}(F=0)$ ground state to the $^2D_{3/2}(F=2)$ state at the wavelength of 436 nm is used as the reference transition. In order to compare two $^{171}$Yb$^+$ standards, separate frequency servo systems are employed to stabilize two probe laser frequencies to the reference transition line centers of two independently stored ions. The experimental results indicate a relative instability (Allan standard devi…
We present and analyze four frequency measurements designed to characterize the performance of an optical frequency reference based on spectral hole burning in \EuYSO. The first frequency comparison, between a single unperturbed spectral hole and a hydrogen maser, demonstrates a fractional frequency drift rate of $5 \times 10^{-18}$ s$^{-1}$. Optical-frequency comparisons between a pattern of spectral holes, a Fabry-Pérot cavity, and an Al$^+$ optical atomic clock show a short-term fractional frequency stability of $1 \times10^{-15} τ^{-1/2}$ that averages down to $2.5^{+1.1}_{-0.5} \times 10^…
We report a value for the $D_2$-line frequency of $^{39}$K with 0.25 ppb uncertainty. The frequency is measured using an evacuated ring-cavity resonator whose length is calibrated against a reference laser. The $D_2$ line presents a problem in identifying the line center because the closely-spaced energy levels of the excited state are not resolved. We use computer modelling of the measured spectrum to extract the line center and obtain a value of 391 015 578.040(75) MHz. In conjunction with our previous measurement of the $D_1$ line, we determine the fine-structure interval in the $4P$ state …
We report the direct excitation of the highly forbidden (6s^2) 1S0 - (6s6p) 3P0 optical transition in two odd isotopes of ytterbium. As the excitation laser frequency is scanned, absorption is detected by monitoring the depletion from an atomic cloud at ~70 uK in a magneto-optical trap. The measured frequency in 171Yb (F=1/2) is 518,295,836,593.2 +/- 4.4 kHz. The measured frequency in 173Yb (F=5/2) is 518,294,576,850.0 +/- 4.4 kHz. Measurements are made with a femtosecond-laser frequency comb calibrated by the NIST cesium fountain clock and represent nearly a million-fold reduction in uncertai…
We report the measurement of absolute excitation frequencies of 87Rb to nS and nD Rydberg states. The Rydberg transition frequencies are obtained by observing electromagnetically induced transparency on a rubidium vapor cell. The accuracy of the measurement of each state is < 1 MHz, which is achieved by frequency stabilizing the two diode lasers employed for the spectroscopy to a frequency comb and a frequency comb calibrated wavelength meter, respectively. Based on the spectroscopic data we determine the quantum defects of 87Rb, and compare it with previous measurements on 85Rb. We determine …
This article reports on laser absorption spectroscopy of iodine gas between 915 nm and 985 nm. This wavelength range is scanned utilizing a narrow linewidth and mode-hop-free tunable diode-laser whose frequency is actively controlled using a calibrated wavelength meter. This allows us to provide an iodine atlas that contains almost 10,000 experimentally observed reference lines with an uncertainty of 50 MHz. For common lines, good agreement is found with a publication by Gerstenkorn et al. [S. Gerstenkorn, P. Luc, Atlas du spectre d'absorption de la molecule d'iode 14800-20000 cm$^{-1}$, Paris…
We report measurements of absolute transition frequencies and hyperfine coupling constants for the 8S_{1/2}, 9S_{1/2}, 7D_{3/2}, and 7D_{5/2} states in ^{133}Cs vapor. The stepwise excitation through either the 6P_{1/2} or 6P_{3/2} intermediate state is performed directly with broadband laser light from a stabilized femtosecond laser optical-frequency comb. The laser beam is split, counter-propagated and focused into a room-temperature Cs vapor cell. The repetition rate of the frequency comb is scanned and we detect the fluorescence on the 7P_{1/2,3/2} -> 6S_{1/2} branches of the decay of the …

The intercombination transition has been referenced to a portable primary Cs frequency standard with the help of a femtosecond fiber laser frequency comb. The achieved uncertainty is $2.5\times10^{-12}$ which corresponds to an increase in accuracy of six orders of magnitude compared to previous results. The measured frequency value permits the calculation of several other optical transitions from $^1S_0$ to the $^3P_J$-level system for $^{24}$Mg, $^{25}$Mg and $^{26}$…

We report the absolute frequency measurement of the 5s2 1S0-5s5p 3P0 transition in 87Sr optical lattice clock (Sr1) at National Time Service Center (NTSC). Its systematic frequency shifts are evaluated carefully with a total relative uncertainty of 5.1E10-17. The measured absolute frequency is 429 228 004 229 872.91(18) Hz with a relative uncertainty of 4.13E10-16, with reference to the ensemble of primary and secondary frequency standards published in the Circular T bulletin by BIPM through a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) link.
We report a stability below $7\times 10{}^{-17}$ of two independent optical lattice clocks operating with bosonic ${}^{88}$Sr isotope. The value (429228066418008.3(1.9)${}_{syst}$(0.9)${}_{stat}$~Hz) of the absolute frequency of the ${}^{1}S_{0}$ - ${}^{3}P_{0}$ transition was measured with an optical frequency comb referenced to the local representation of the UTC by the 330 km-long stabilized fibre optical link. The result was verified by series of measurements on two independent optical lattice clocks and agrees with recommendation of Bureau International des Poids et Mesures.
We compared the frequency shift of the 21Ne Zeeman resonance induced by polarized Rb vapor to the shift induced in the 3He Zeeman resonance. The 3He/Rb shift has recently been measured with high precision, permitting the conversion of our differential measurement to an absolute value for the 21Ne/Rb shift. We report a value of K = 31.8 +/- 2.8 for the Rb/21Ne enhancement factor at a temperature of 124.8 +/- 1.9 C. We propose high-precision differential contact shift measurements, the absolute accuracy of which would be limited by the error in the 3He contact shift.
A three-step laser excitation scheme is used to make absolute frequency measurements of highly excited nF7/2 Rydberg states in 85Rb for principal quantum numbers n=33-100. This work demonstrates the first absolute frequency measurements of rubidium Rydberg levels using a purely optical detection scheme. The Rydberg states are excited in a heated Rb vapour cell and Doppler free signals are detected via purely optical means. All of the frequency measurements are made using a wavemeter which is calibrated against a GPS disciplined self-referenced optical frequency comb. We find that the measured …
A phase-stabilized femtosecond laser comb is directly used for high-resolution spectroscopy and absolute optical frequency measurements of one- and two-photon transitions in laser-cooled \rb atoms. Absolute atomic transition frequencies, such as the 5S$_{1/2}$ F=2 \ra 7S$_{1/2}$ F"=2 two-photon resonance measured at 788 794 768 921(44) kHz, are determined without \textit{a priori} knowledge about their values. Detailed dynamics of population transfer driven by a sequence of pulses are uncovered and taken into account for the measurement of the 5P states via resonantly enhanced two-photon trans…
We report absolute frequency measurements of 81 hyperfine components of the rovibrational transitions of molecular iodine at 578 nm using the second harmonic generation of an 1156-nm external-cavity diode laser and a fiber-based optical frequency comb. The relative uncertainties of the measured absolute frequencies are typically $1.4\times10^{-11}$. Accurate hyperfine constants of four rovibrational transitions are obtained by fitting the measured hyperfine splittings to a four-term effective Hamiltonian including the electric quadrupole, spin-rotation, tensor spin-spin, and scalar spin-spin i…
We demonstrated transferring the stability of one highly stable clock laser operating at 729 nm to another less stable laser operating at 698 nm. The two different wavelengths were bridged using an optical frequency comb. The improved stability of the clock laser at 698 nm enabled us to evaluate the systematic frequency shifts of the Sr optical lattice clock with shorter averaging time. We determined the absolute frequency of the clock transition 1S0 - 3P0 in 87Sr to be 429 228 004 229 873.9 (1.4) Hz referenced to the SI second on the geoid via International Atomic Time (TAI).
The ytterbium atom is widely used in the fields of atomic physics, cavity quantum electrodynamics, quantum information processing and optical frequency standards. There is however a strong dispersion among the reported values of the ${}^1{\rm S}_0 \rightarrow {}^1{\rm P}_1$ transition frequency. In this article, we present two independent measurements of the absolute frequency of this transition performed with two different wavemeters using atomic fluorescence spectroscopy. The cancellation of Doppler shifts is obtained by fine tuning the angle between the probe laser and the atomic beam. The …
We demonstrate a diode laser system operating at 399 nm that is stabilized to the ${\rm 6s^{2}\ {^1}S_{0} - 6s6p\ {^1}P_{1}}$ electric dipole transition in ytterbium (Yb) atoms in a hollow-cathode lamp. The frequency stability of the laser reached $1.1 \times 10^{-11}$ at an averaging time of $τ= 1\ \mathrm{s}$. We performed an absolute frequency measurement using an optical frequency comb and determined that the absolute frequency of the laser stabilized to the ${\rm {^1}S_{0} - {^1}P_{1}}$ transition in $^{174}\mathrm{Yb}$ was 751 526 522.26(9) MHz. We also investigated several systematic fr…
We performed an absolute frequency measurement of the $^1S_{0}$-$^3P_{0}$ transition in $^{87}$Sr with a fractional uncertainty of $1.2 \times 10^{-15}$, which is less than one third that of our previous measurement. A caesium fountain atomic clock was used as a transfer oscillator to reduce the uncertainty of the link between a strontium optical lattice clock and the SI second. The absolute value of the transition frequency is 429 228 004 229 873.56(49) Hz.
We have measured the absolute frequency of the optical lattice clock based on $^{87}$Sr at PTB with an uncertainty of $3.9\times 10^{-16}$ using two caesium fountain clocks. This is close to the accuracy of today's best realizations of the SI second. The absolute frequency of the 5s$^2$ $^1$S$_0$-5s5p $^3$P$_0$ transition in $^{87}$Sr is 429,228,004,229,873.13(17) Hz. Our result is in excellent agreement with recent measurements performed in different laboratories worldwide. We improved the total systematic uncertainty of our Sr frequency standard by a factor of five and reach $3\times 10^{-17…
The absolute frequency of the $^{87}{\rm Sr}$ clock transition measured in 2015 was reevaluated using an improved frequency link to the SI second. The scale interval of International Atomic Time (TAI) that we used as the reference was calibrated for an evaluation interval of five days instead of the conventional interval of one month which is regularly employed in Circular T. The calibration on a five-day basis removed the uncertainty in assimilating the TAI scale of the five-day mean to that of the one-month mean. The reevaluation resulted in the total uncertainty of $10^{-16}$ level for the …
The frequency ratio of the 1S0(F=1/2)-3P0(F=1/2) clock transition in 171Yb and the 1S0(F=9/2)-3P0(F=9/2) clock transition in 87Sr is measured by an optical-optical direct frequency link between two optical lattice clocks. We determined the ratio (ν_{Yb}/ν_{Sr}) to be 1.207 507 039 343 340 4(18) with a fractional uncertainty of 1.5x10^{-15}. The measurement uncertainty of the frequency ratio is smaller than that obtained from absolute frequency measurements using the International Atomic Time (TAI) link. The measured ratio agrees well with that derived from the absolute frequency measurement re…

The absolute frequency of 2$^{1}$S$_{0}$-3$^{1}$D$_{2}$ transition is experimentally determined to be 594 414 291 803(13) kHz with a relative uncertainty of 1.6 $\times$ 10$^{-11}$ which is more precise than previous determination by a factor of 25. Combined with the theoretical ionization energy of the 3$^{1}$D$_{2}$ state, the ionization energy…
We report the binding energy of $^{87}$Rb$^{133}$Cs molecules in their rovibrational ground state measured using an offset-free optical frequency comb based on difference frequency generation technology. We create molecules in the absolute ground state using stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) with a transfer efficiency of 88\%. By measuring the absolute frequencies of our STIRAP lasers, we find the energy-level difference from an initial weakly-bound Feshbach state to the rovibrational ground state with a resolution of 5 kHz over an energy-level difference of more than 114 THz; this l…

We report measurements of the absolute energies of the hyperfine components of the $12s \ ^2S_{1/2}$ and $13s \ ^2S_{1/2}$ levels of atomic cesium, $^{133}$Cs. Using the frequency difference between these components, we determine the hyperfine coupling constants for these states, and report these values with a relative uncertainty of $\sim$0.06 %. We also examine the hyperfine structure of the $11d \ ^2D_{J}$ ($J=3/2, 5/2$) states, and resolve the sign ambiguity of the hyperfine coupling constants from previous measurements of these states. We also derive new, high precision values for the sta…
The frequency comb created by a femtosecond mode-locked laser and a microstructured fiber is used to phase coherently measure the frequencies of both the Hg^+ and Ca optical standards with respect to the SI second as realized at NIST. In addition to the unprecedented precision demonstrated here, this work is the precursor to all-optical atomic clocks based on the Hg^+ and Ca standards. Furthermore, when combined with previous measurements, we find no time variations of …

Quasi-simultaneous measurements in copropagating and counterpropagating geometry were performed to become independent from acceleration voltage determinations for Doppler-shift corrections of the fast ion beam. Isotope shifts and fine structure splittings were obtained from the absolute transition frequencies with accuracies better than 1\,MHz and l…
