We describe experiments with an optical frequency standard based on a laser cooled $^{171}$Yb$^+$ ion confined in a radiofrequency Paul trap. The electric-quadrupole transition from the $^2S_{1/2}(F=0)$ ground state to the $^2D_{3/2}(F=2)$ state at the wavelength of 436 nm is used as the reference transition. In order to compare two $^{171}$Yb$^+$ standards, separate frequency servo systems are employed to stabilize two probe laser frequencies to the reference transition line centers of two independently stored ions. The experimental results indicate a relative instability (Allan standard deviation) of the optical frequency difference between the two systems of $σ_y(1000 {\rm s})=5\cdot 10^{-16}$ only, so that shifts in the sub-hertz range can be resolved. Shifts of several hertz are observed if a stationary electric field gradient is superimposed on the radiofrequency trap field. The absolute optical transition frequency of Yb$^+$ at 688 THz was measured with a cesium atomic clock at two times separated by 2.8 years. A temporal variation of this frequency can be excluded within a $1σ$ relative uncertainty of $4.4\cdot 10^{-15}$ yr$^{-1}$. Combined with recently published values for the constancy of other transition frequencies this measurement provides a limit on the present variability of the fine structure constant $α$ at the level of $2.0\cdot 10^{-15}$ yr$^{-1}$.
The photon-ion merged-beams technique has been employed at the new Photon-Ion spectrometer at PETRA III (PIPE) for measuring multiple photoionization of Xe$^{q+}$ (q=1-5) ions. Total ionization cross sections have been obtained on an absolute scale for the dominant ionization reactions of the type hν+ Xe$^{q+}$ $\to$ Xe$^{r+}$ + (q-r) e$^-$ with product charge states q+2 $\le$ r $\le$ q+5. Prominent ionization features are observed in the photon-energy range 650-750 eV, which are associated with excitation or ionization of an inner-shell 3d electron. Single-configuration Dirac-Fock calculation…
Precision atomic spectroscopy is presently the work horse in quantum information technology, metrology, trace analysis and even for fundamental tests in physics. Stable lasers are inherent part of precision spectroscopy which in turn requires absolute wavelength markers suitably placed corresponding to the atomic species being probed. Here we present, new lines of tellurium (Te$_2$) which allows locking of external cavity diode laser (ECDL) for precision spectroscopy of singly charged barium ions. In addition, we have developed an ECDL with over 100 GHz mod-hop-free tuning range using commerci…
Rate coefficients for photorecombination (PR) and cross sections for electron-impact ionization (EII) of Fe$^{14+}$ forming Fe$^{13+}$ and Fe$^{15+}$, respectively, have been measured by employing the electron-ion merged-beams technique at a heavy-ion storage ring. Rate coefficients for PR and EII of Fe$^{14+}$ ions in a plasma are derived from the experimental measurements. Simple parametrizations of the experimentally derived plasma rate coefficients are provided for use in the modeling of photoionized and collisionally ionized plasmas. In the temperature ranges where Fe$^{14+}$ is expected …
We report measured rate coefficients for electron-ion recombination for Si10+ forming Si9+ and for Si9+ forming Si8+, respectively. The measurements were performed using the electron-ion merged-beams technique at a heavy-ion storage ring. Electron-ion collision energies ranged from 0 to 50 eV for Si9+ and from 0 to 2000 eV for Si10+, thus, extending previous measurements for Si10+ [Orban et al. 2010, Astrophys. J. 721, 1603] to much higher energies. Experimentally derived rate coefficients for the recombination of Si9+ and Si10+ ions in a plasma are presented along with simple parameterization…
We describe and experimentally implement a single-ion local thermometry technique with absolute sensitivity adaptable to all laser-cooled atomic ion species. The technique is based on the velocity-dependent spectral shape of a quasi-dark resonance tailored in a J $\rightarrow$ J transition such that the two driving fields can be derived from the same laser source leading to a negligible relative phase shift. We validated the method and tested its performances in an experiment on a single 88 Sr + ion cooled in a surface radio-frequency trap. We first applied the technique to characterise the he…
We report a comparison between two absolute gravimeters: the LNE-SYRTE cold atoms gravimeter and FG5#220 of Leibniz Universität of Hannover. They rely on different principles of operation: atomic and optical interferometry. Both are movable which enabled them to participated to the last International Comparison of Absolute Gravimeters (ICAG'09) at BIPM. Immediately after, their bilateral comparison took place in the LNE watt balance laboratory and showed an agreement of 4.3 +/- 6.4 μGal.
We study the Doppler-broadened absorption of a weak monochromatic probe beam in a thermal rubidium vapour cell on the D lines. A detailed model of the susceptibility is developed which takes into account the absolute linestrengths of the allowed electric dipole transitions and the motion of the atoms parallel to the probe beam. All transitions from both hyperfine levels of the ground term of both isotopes are incorporated. The absorption and refractive index as a function of frequency are expressed in terms of the complementary error function. The absolute absorption profiles are compared with…
The absolute electron capture cross sections for single and double charge exchanges between the highly charged ions O6+ and CO2, CH4, H2, N2, the dominant collision processes in the solar wind, have been measured in the energy from 7 keV*q (2.63 keV/u) to 52 keV*q (19.5 keV/u). These measurements were carried out in the new experimental instrument set up at Fudan University, and the error of cross sections for single and double charge exchanges at the 1σ confidence level are about 11% and 16%, respectively. Limited agreement is achieved with single electron capture results calculated by the cl…
Absolute two-photon detachment cross sections and photoelectron angular distribution are calculated for halogen negative ions within lowest-order perturbation theory. The Dyson equation method is used to obtain the outer np ground-state wave functions with proper asymptotic behavior exp (-k r), corresponding to correct (experimental) binding energies E=k^2/2. The latter is crucial for obtaining correct absolute values of the multiphoton cross sections (Gribakin and Kuchiev 1997 Phys. Rev.A55 3760). Comparisons with previous calculations and experimental data are performed.
We report on the comparison between three absolute gravimeters that took place in April 2010 at Laboratoire National de Métrologie et d'Essais. The three instruments (FG5#209 from METAS, Switzerland, IMGC-02 from INRIM, Italy, and CAG from LNE-SYRTE, France) rely on different methods: optical and atomic interferometry. We discuss their differences as well as their similarities. We compare their measurements of the gravitational acceleration in 4 points of the same pillar, in the perspective of an absolute determination of g for a watt balance experiment
Absolute three-photon detachment cross sections are calculated for the fluorine negative ion within the lowest-order perturbation theory. The Dyson equation of the atomic many-body theory is used to obtain the ground-state 2p wavefunction with correct asymptotic behaviour, corresponding to the true (experimental) binding energy. We show that in accordance with the adiabatic theory (Gribakin and Kuchiev 1997 {Phys. Rev. A} {\bf 55} 3760) this is crucial for obtaining absolute values of the multiphoton cross sections. Comparisons with other calculations and experimental data are presented.
We report the direct comparison between the stabilities of two mobile absolute gravimeters of different technology: the LNE-SYRTE Cold Atom Gravimeter and FG5X\#216 of the Université du Luxembourg. These instruments rely on two different principles of operation: atomic and optical interferometry. The comparison took place in the Walferdange Underground Laboratory for Geodynamics in Luxembourg, at the beginning of the last International Comparison of Absolute Gravimeters, ICAG-2013. We analyse a 2h10 duration common measurement, and find that the CAG shows better immunity with respect to change…
Absolute frequency measurement of molecular iodine hyperfine transitions at 554 nm and its application to stabilize a 369 nm laser for Yb+ ions cooling
We introduce a method to investigate the longitudinal momentum spread resulting from strong-field tunnel ionization of Helium which, unlike other methods, is valid for all ellipticities of laser pulse. Semiclassical models consisting of tunnel ionization followed by classical propagation in the combined ion and laser field reproduce the experimental results if an initial longitudinal spread at the tunnel exit is included. The values for this spread are found to be of the order of twice the transverse momentum spread.
We have made the first absolute, reference-free measurement of the 1s2s 3 S1 $\rightarrow$ 1s 2 1 S0 relativistic magnetic dipole transition in He-like sulfur. The highly-charged S ions were provided by an electron-cyclotron resonance ion source, and the x rays were analysed with a high-precision double crystal spectrometer. A transition energy of 2430.3685(97) eV was obtained, and is compared to most advanced bound state quantum electrodynamics calculations, providing an important test of two-electron QED effects and precision atomic structure methods in medium-Z species. Thanks to the extrem…
We present new experimentally measured and theoretically calculated rate coefficients for the electron-ion recombination of W$^{18+}$([Kr] $4d^{10}$ $4f^{10}$) forming W$^{17+}$. At low electron-ion collision energies, the merged-beam rate coefficient is dominated by strong, mutually overlapping, recombination resonances. In the temperature range where the fractional abundance of W$^{18+}$ is expected to peak in a fusion plasma, the experimentally derived Maxwellian recombination rate coefficient is 5 to 10 times larger than that which is currently recommended for plasma modeling. The complexi…
High accuracy frequency metrology on the 4s 2S1/2 - 4p 2P1/2 transition in calcium ions is performed using laser cooled and crystallized ions in a linear Paul trap. Calibration is performed with a frequency comb laser, resulting in a transition frequency of f=755222766.2(1.7) MHz. The accuracy presents an improvement of more than one order of magnitude, and will facilitate a comparison with quasar data in a search for a possible change of the fine structure constant on a cosmological time scale.
We present a broadly applicable in situ method for profiling ion beams using electrostatic deflectors and a Faraday cup. By deconvolving the detector geometry from the resulting current profiles, spatially resolved absolute current density profiles are obtained. We demonstrate this method's efficacy with low-density highly charged ion beams (specifically, Ne$^{8+}$). Details on experimental design are provided as well as the link to the deconvolution routine on Github.
In the past two decades, the electron-ion merged-beams technique has extensively been exploited at heavy-ion storage rings equipped with electron coolers for spectroscopic studies of highly charged ions as well as for measuring absolute cross sections and rate coefficients for electron-ion recombination and electron-impact ionization of multiply charged atoms ions. Some recent results are highlighted and future perspectives are pointed out, in particular, in view of novel experimental possibilities at the FAIR facility in Darmstadt and at the Cryogenic Storage Ring at the Max-Planck-Institute …
Stripping cross sections in nitrogen have been calculated using the classical trajectory approximation and the Born approximation of quantum mechanics for the outer shell electrons of 3.2GeV I$^{-}$ and Cs$^{+}$ ions. A large difference in cross section, up to a factor of six, calculated in quantum mechanics and classical mechanics, has been obtained. Because at such high velocities the Born approximation is well validated, the classical trajectory approach fails to correctly predict the stripping cross sections at high energies for electron orbitals with low ionization potential.
The optical manipulation of Ba$^{+}$ ions is mainly performed by a 493 nm laser for the S$_{1/2}$-P$_{1/2}$ transition and a 650 nm laser for the P$_{1/2}$-D$_{3/2}$ transition. Since the branching ratio between the 493 nm and 650 nm transitions of a single Ba$^{+}$ ion is comparable, stabilization systems of both lasers are equally important for Doppler cooling, sub-Doppler cooling, optical pumping and state detection. The stabilization system of a 493 nm laser to an absolute Te$_2$ reference has been well established. However, the stabilization of a 650 nm laser has not been presented before…
We present quantitative measurements of the photoassociation of cesium molecules inside a far-detuned optical dipole trap. A model of the trap depletion dynamics is derived which allows to extract absolute photoassociation rate coefficients for the initial single-photon photoassociation step from measured trap-loss spectra. The sensitivity of this approach is demonstrated by measuring the Franck-Condon modulation of the weak photoassociation transitions into the low vibrational levels of the outer well of the 0g- state that correlates to the 6s+6p3/2 asymptote. The measurements are compared to…
We demonstrate a method for precision spectroscopy on trapped ions in the limit of unresolved motional sidebands. By sympathetic cooling of a chain of crystallized ions we suppress adverse temperature variations induced by the spectroscopy laser that usually lead to a distorted line profle and obtain a Voigt profile with negligible distortions. We applied the method to measure the absolute frequency of the astrophysically relevant D2 transition in single 24-Mg+ ions and find 1072082934.33(16)MHz, a nearly 400fold improvement over previous results. Further, we find the excited state lifetime to…
We present a measurement of the branching ratios from the 6P3/2 state of BaII into all dipoleallowed decay channels (6S1/2, 5D3/2 and 5D5/2). Measurements were performed on single 138Ba+ ions in a linear Paul trap with a frequency-doubled mode-locked Ti:Sapphire laser resonant with the 6S1/2->6P3/2 transition at 455 nm by detection of electron shelving into the dark 5D5/2 state. By driving a pi Rabi rotation with a single femtosecond pulse, a absolute measurement of the branching ratio to 5D5/2 state was performed. Combined with a measurement of the relative decay rates into 5D3/2 and 5D5/2 st…
We present and analyze four frequency measurements designed to characterize the performance of an optical frequency reference based on spectral hole burning in \EuYSO. The first frequency comparison, between a single unperturbed spectral hole and a hydrogen maser, demonstrates a fractional frequency drift rate of $5 \times 10^{-18}$ s$^{-1}$. Optical-frequency comparisons between a pattern of spectral holes, a Fabry-Pérot cavity, and an Al$^+$ optical atomic clock show a short-term fractional frequency stability of $1 \times10^{-15} τ^{-1/2}$ that averages down to $2.5^{+1.1}_{-0.5} \times 10^…
Optical frequency comparison of the 40Ca+ clock transition ν_{Ca} (2S1/2-2D5/2, 729nm) against the 87Sr optical lattice clock transition ν_{Sr}(1S0-3P0, 698nm) has resulted in a frequency ratio ν_{Ca} / ν_{Sr} = 0.957 631 202 358 049 9(2 3). The rapid nature of optical comparison allowed the statistical uncertainty of frequency ratio ν_{Ca} / ν_{Sr} to reach 1x10-15 in only 1000s and yielded a value consistent with that calculated from separate absolute frequency measurements of ν_{Ca} using the International Atomic Time (TAI) link. The total uncertainty of the frequency ratio using optical co…
Absolute cross sections for the K-shell photoionization of Be-like boron ions were measured with the ion-photon merged-beams technique at the Advanced Light Source synchrotron radiation facility. High-resolution spectroscopy with E/$Δ$E up to 8800 ($Δ$E $\sim$ 22 meV) covered the energy ranges 193.7 -- 194.7 eV and 209 -- 215 eV. Lifetimes of the strongest resonances are determined with relative uncertainties down to approximately 4% for the broadest resonance. The measured resonance strengths are consistent with 60 % $\rm 1s^22s^2$ $^1S$ ground-state and 40 % $\rm 1s^22s2p$ $^3P^o$ metastable…
