The a(1) state of PbO can be used to measure the electric dipole moment of the electron d_e. We discuss a semiempirical model for this state, which yields an estimate of the effective electric field on the valence electrons in PbO. Our final result is an upper limit on the measurable energy shift, which is significantly larger than was anticipated earlier: $ 2|W_d|d_e \ge 2.4\times 10^{25} \textrm{Hz} [ \frac{d_e}{e \textrm{cm}} ]$.
Comment on "Reappraisal of the Electric Dipole Moment Enhancement Factor for Thallium"
Nataraj { \em et al}(Phys. Rev. Lett.
We perform calculations of the CP-violating atomic and molecular electric dipole moments (EDM) induced by the interaction of the nuclear Schiff moments with electrons. EDM of atoms Eu, Dy, Gd, Ac, Th, Pa, U, Np and Pu are of special interest since they have isotopes with strongly enhanced nuclear Schiff moments caused by the octupole nuclear deformation or soft octupole vibration mode. These atoms have open 4f or 5f shells making the calculations complicated. We use our special version of the configuration interaction method combined with the many-body perturbation theory method adopted for op…
Polyatomic polar molecules are promising systems for future experiments that search for violation of time-reversal and parity symmetries due to their advantageous electronic and vibrational structure, which allows laser cooling, full polarisation of the molecule, and reduction of systematic effects [I. Kozyryev and N.R. Hutzler, Phys, Rev. Lett. {\bf 119}, 133002 (2017)]. In this work we investigate the enhancement factor of the electric dipole moment of the electron ($E_\text{eff}$) in the triatomic monohydroxide molecules BaOH and YbOH within the high-accuracy relativistic coupled cluster me…
The energy dependence of the rates of the reactions between He$^+$ and ammonia (NY$_3$, Y= {H,D}), forming NY$_2^+$, Y and He as well as NY$^+$, Y$_2$ and He, and the corresponding product branching ratios have been measured at low collision energies between 0 and $k_{\mathrm{B}}\cdot40$ K using a recently developed merged-beam technique [Allmendinger {\it et al.}, ChemPhysChem {\bf 17}, 3596 (2016)]. To avoid heating of the ions by stray electric fields, the reactions are observed within the large orbit of a highly excited Rydberg electron. A beam of He Rydberg atoms was merged with a superso…
The reaction between He$^+$ and CH$_3$F forming predominantly CH$_2^+$ and CHF$^+$ has been studied at collision energies $E_{\rm coll}$ between 0 and $k_{\rm B}\cdot 10$~K in a merged-beam apparatus. To avoid heating of the ions by stray electric fields, the reaction was observed within the orbit of a highly excited Rydberg electron. Supersonic beams of CH$_3$F and He($n$) Rydberg atoms with principal quantum number $n= 30$ and 35 were merged and their relative velocity tuned using a Rydberg-Stark decelerator and deflector, allowing an energy resolution of 150 mK. A strong enhancement of the …
The relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) method is a powerful many-body method, particularly in the evaluation of electronic wave functions of heavy atoms and molecules, and can be used to calculate various atomic and molecular properties. One such atomic property is the enhancement factor (R) of the atomic electric dipole moment (EDM) due to an electron EDM needed in electron EDM searches. The EDM of the electron is a sensitive probe of CP-violation, and its search could provide insights into new physics beyond the Standard Model, as well as open questions in cosmology. Electron EDM searches us…
In view of the large differences in the previous calculations of enhancement factors to the parity and time-reversal violating (P,T-odd) electric dipole moment (EDM) of $^{225}$Ra due to nuclear Schiff moment (NSM) and tensor-pseudotensor (T-PT) electron-nucleus (e-N) interactions between the relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) theory and other many-body methods, we employ the relativistic normal coupled-cluster (RNCC) theory to explain the discrepancies. The normalization of the wave function in the RNCC theory becomes unity by construction. This feature removes the ambiguity associated with t…
Dipole-dipole interactions are at the origin of long-lived collective atomic states, often called subradiant, which are explored for their potential use in novel photonic devices or in quantum protocols. Here, we study subradiance beyond linear optics and experimentally demonstrate a two hundred-fold increase in the population of these modes, as the saturation parameter of the driving field is increased. We attribute this enhancement to a mechanism similar to optical pumping through the well-coupled superradiant states. The lifetimes are unaffected by the pump strength, as the system is ultima…
Experiments with paramagnetic ground or metastable excited states of molecules (ThO, HfF$^+$, YbF, YbOH, BaF, PbO, etc.) provide strong constraints on electron electric dipole moment (EDM) and coupling constant $C_{SP}$ of contact semileptonic interaction. We compute new contributions to $C_{SP}$ arising from the nucleon EDMs due to combined electric and magnetic electron-nucleon interaction. This allows us to improve limits from the experiments with paramagnetic molecules on the $CP$-violating parameters, such as the proton EDM, $|d_p|< 1.1\times 10^{-23} e\cdot $cm, the QCD vacuum angle, $|\…
The electric dipole moment (EDM) is a very sensitive probe of CP violation beyond the standard model, and it as been measured in many systems such as atoms, neutrons, etc. The EDM of composite systems may be sensitive to several elementary level CP violating processes, but the theoretical evaluations of the CP violation at different physical (atomic, nuclear, hadronic, elementary) hierarchies are required to unveil them. In this context, we are particularly interested in which CP violating processes are enhanced in a given system, or vice versa. In this proceedings contribution, we will give a…
