This paper describes a THz transmission spectrometer for the spectral range of 2-65 cm^-1 (100 GHz to 2 THz) with a spectral resolution of at least 1.8 cm^-1 (50 GHz) where the source, sample, and detector are all fully contained in a cryogenic environment. Cyclotron emission from a two-dimensional electron gas heated with an electrical current serves as a magnetic field tunable source. The spectrometer is demonstrated at 4.2 K by measuring the resonant cyclotron absorption of a second two dimensional electron gas. Unique aspects of the spectrometer are that 1) an ultra-broadband detector is used and 2) the emitter is run quasi-continuously with a chopping frequency of only 1 Hz. Since optical coupling to room temperature components is not necessary, this technique is compatible with ultra-low temperature (sub 100 mK) operation.
We describe a THz spectrometer operating between 1.2 and 10.5 THz, consisting of band pass filters made with metasurfaces. The source is made of 10 W small black body. The detector is a high sensitivity room temperature pyroelectric sensor. Various techniques used to prepare samples are described. The spectra obtained are compared with those measured with a Fourier Transformer Infrared Spectrometer on the same samples. The instrument, using commercial technologies available at the present time, can constitute an economical alternative to very expensive spectrometers. It has already been succes…
We present an instrument to perform frequency-domain electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments that is based on coplanar waveguides and field modulation. A large parameter space in frequency (up to 25 GHz), magnetic field (up to 8 T), and temperature (down to 1.6 K) is accessible. We performed experiments on DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) as a standard to calibrate the field modulation as well as on a carbon fibre sample to estimate the overall sensitivity of the instruments. Spectra of a ruby sample in a broad frequency- and field range at cryogenic temperatures are recorded with and wi…
We report here the realization and commissioning of an experiment dedicated to the study of the optical properties of light matter hybrids constituted of crystalline samples embedded in an optical cavity. The experimental assembly developed offers the unique opportunity to study the weak and strong coupling regime between a tunable optical cavity in cryogenic environment and low energy degrees of freedom such as phonons, magnons or charge fluctuations. We describe here the setup developed which allows the positioning of crystalline samples in an optical cavity of different quality factor, the …
In this paper we present the outcome of the first international comparison in the terahertz frequency range among three different kinds of spectrometers. A Fourier-Transform infrared spectrometer, a Vector Network Analyzer and a Time-Domain Spectrometer have been employed for measuring the complex refractive index of three travelling standards made of selected dielectric materials in order to offer a wide enough range of parameters to be measured. The three spectrometers have been compared in terms of measurement capability and uncertainty.
Development and validation of a cryogenic far-infrared diffraction grating spectrometer used to post-disperse the output from a Fourier transform spectrometer
The paper describes a radio frequency (RF) spectrometer for 14N nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectroscopy that uses a detector coil cooled to 77 K to maximize measurement sensitivity. The design uses a minimally-intrusive network of active duplexers and mechanical contact switches to realize a digitally reconfigurable series/parallel coil tuning network that allows transmit- and receive-mode performance to be independently optimized. The design is battery-powered and includes a mixed-signal embedded system to monitor and control secondary processes, thus enabling autonomous operation. Te…
Dedicated spectrometers for terahertz radiation with [0.3, 30] THz frequencies using traditional optomechanical interferometry are substantially less common than their infrared and microwave counterparts. This paper presents the design and initial performance measurements of a tabletop Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) for multi-terahertz radiation using infrared optics in a Michelson arrangement. This is coupled to a broadband pyroelectric photodetector designed for [0.1, 30] THz frequencies. We measure spectra of narrowband and broadband input radiation to characterize the performance of …
The high peak current required in free-electron lasers (FELs) is realized by longitudinal compression of the electron bunches to sub-picosecond length. In this paper, a frequency-domain diagnostic method is described that is capable of resolving structures in the femtosecond regime. A novel in-vacuum spectrometer has been developed for spectroscopy of coherent radiation in the THz and infrared range. The spectrometer is equipped with five consecutive dispersion gratings and 120 parallel readout channels; it can be operated either in short wavelength mode (5 - 44 um) or in long wavelength mode …
Continuous Wave (CW) Terahertz spectroscopy enabled by photomixing is a promising high precision spectroscopic tool for the examination of a wide variety of samples including biological, chemical, and solid state. However, often it would be of interest to examine isolated samples free from bulk effects that broaden spectral features. In this form samples with low concentrations of absorbers have a reduced cross section making coupling to an external driving field a challenge. By utilising THz metamaterials one can borrow the concepts of surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy to confine and concen…
Highly sensitive terahertz (THz) sensors for a myriad of applications are rapidly evolving. A widespread sensor concept is based on the detection of minute resonance frequency shifts due to a targeted specimen in the sensors environment. Therefore, cutting-edge high resolution continuous wave (CW) THz spectrometers provide very powerful tools to investigate the sensors' performances. However, unpredictable yet non negligible frequency drifts common to state-of-the-art CW THz spectrometers limit the sensors' accuracy for ultra-high precision sensing and metrology. Here, we overcome this deficie…
The KATRIN experiment will determine the effective electron anti-neutrino mass with a sensitivity of 200 meV/c$^2$ at 90% CL. The energy analysis of tritium $β$-decay electrons will be performed by a tandem setup of electrostatic retarding spectrometers which have to be operated at very low background levels of $<10^{-2}$ counts per second. This benchmark rate can be exceeded by background processes resulting from the emanation of single $^{219,220}$Rn atoms from the inner spectrometer surface and an array of non-evaporable getter strips used as main vacuum pump. Here we report on a the impact…
We demonstrate a single-shot terahertz spectrometer consisting of a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a microbolometer focal plane array. The spectrometer is simple to use and can measure terahertz field autocorrelations and spectral power with no moving parts and no ultrashort-pulsed laser. It can effectively detect radiation at 10$\sim$40 THz when tested with a thermal source. It can be also used to measure the complex refractive index of a sample material. In principle, it can characterize both laser-based and non-laser-based terahertz sources and potentially cover 1$\sim$10 THz with…
We evaluate 2 thermopile sensors as convenient detector options for a modern integrated THz imaging system. Both a commercial single pixel device and a 32x32 pixel FPA are utilized in a simple setup with a single optical element to achieve an outstanding resolution and SNR performance. Either a cryogenically cooled quantum cascade laser (QCL) or a room temperature electronic THz multiplier chain is used as source.
The current state of far-infrared astronomy drives the need to develop compact, sensitive spectrometers for future space and ground-based instruments. Here we present details of the $\rm μ$-Spec spectrometers currently in development for the far-infrared balloon mission EXCLAIM. The spectrometers are designed to cover the $\rm 555 - 714\ μ$m range with a resolution of $\rm R\ =\ λ/ Δλ =\ 512$ at the $\rm 638\ μ$m band center. The spectrometer design incorporates a Rowland grating spectrometer implemented in a parallel plate waveguide on a low-loss single-crystal Si chip, employing Nb microstri…
Four-wave-mixing-based quantum cascade laser frequency combs (QCL-FC) are a powerful photonic tool, driving a recent revolution in major molecular fingerprint regions, i.e. mid- and far-infrared domains. Their compact and frequency-agile design, together with their high optical power and spectral purity, promise to deliver an all-in-one source for the most challenging spectroscopic applications. Here, we demonstrate a metrological-grade hybrid dual comb spectrometer, combining the advantages of a THz QCL-FC with the accuracy and absolute frequency referencing provided by a free-standing, optic…
We have previously used an array of cryogenic microcalorimeters with 4 eV energy resolution to measure emission-line profiles and energies of the characteristic L-shell x rays of four elements of the lanthanide series: praseodymium, neodymium, terbium, and holmium. We consider the power of the same data set for the estimation of the lines' relative intensities. Intensities must be corrected for detector efficiency and self-absorption, and we estimate uncertainties on the corrections. These data represent one of the first uses of cryogenic energy-dispersive sensors to estimate the relative inte…

In order to facilitate IR absorption measurements of mass-selected ions isolated in cryogenic matrices, we have upgraded an ion beam deposition apparatus encompassing a Bruker IFS66v/S FTIR spectrometer. A synthetic diamond beam splitter without compensator plate and UHV diamond viewports were installed. We have also modified the IR detector chamber to allow measurements with 5 different detectors. As a result we can now obtain FT absorption spectra from 12000 cm$^{-1}$ to 15 cm$^{-1}$ with the same sample held under ultrahigh vacuum conditions, simply by switching between appropriate IR detec…
We present a real-time THz imaging method using a commercial fiber coupled photo conductive antenna as the THz source and an uncooled microbolometer camera for detection. Compared to other THz imaging setups, this concept is very adaptable due to its compact and uncooled radiation source, whose fiber coupling allows for a flexible placement. Using a camera with high sensitivity renders real-time imaging possible. As a proof-of-concept, the beam shape of a THz Time Domain Spectrometer was measured. We also demonstrate the potential for practical applications in transmission geometry, covering m…
High resolution (900 Hz full-width at half maximum) frequency domain spectroscopy near 0.2Terahertz is achieved using an exact frequency spacing comb-source in the optical communications band, filtering and photo-mixing in a custom Uni-Travelling-Carrier Photodiode (UTC-PD) for THz signal generation and coherent down-conversion for detection. Via time domain modulation of one of the comb lines, a fully controllable spectrometer can be defined in software, and this principle is demonstrated for magnetic field-free readout of the electronuclear spectrum for the Ho ions in \lihof, a material ofte…
The combination of electronic sources operating at high frequencies and modern microwave instrumentation has enabled the recent development of chirped-pulse spectrometers for the millimetre and THz bands. This type of instrument can operate at high resolution which is particularly suited to gas phase rotational spectroscopy. The construction of a chirped pulse spectrometer operating at 200 GHz is described in detail while attention is paid to the phase stability and the data accumulation over many cycles. Validation using carbonyl sulphide has allowed the detection limit of the instrument to b…
We have developed a passive 350 GHz (850 μm) video-camera to demonstrate lumped element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKIDs) -- designed originally for far-infrared astronomy -- as an option for general purpose terrestrial terahertz imaging applications. The camera currently operates at a quasi-video frame rate of 2 Hz with a noise equivalent temperature difference per frame of $\sim$0.1 K, which is close to the background limit. The 152 element superconducting LEKID array is fabricated from a simple 40 nm aluminum film on a silicon dielectric substrate and is read out through a single microw…
The PSI low-energy $μ$SR spectrometer is an instrument dedicated to muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements. Knowledge of the muon beam parameters such as spatial, kinetic energy and arrival-time distributions at the sample position are important ingredients to analyze the $μ$SR spectra. We present here the measured energy losses in the thin carbon foil of the muon start detector deduced from time-of-flight measurements. Muonium formation in the thin carbon foil (10 nm thickness) of the muon start detector also affect the measurable decay asymmetry and therefore need to be accounted for…
We describe an instrument which can be used to analyze complex chemical mixtures at high resolution and high sensitivity. Molecules are collisionally cooled with helium gas at cryogenic temperatures (~ 4-7 K), and subsequently detected using chirped pulse microwave spectroscopy. Here we demonstrate three significant improvements to the apparatus relative to an earlier version: (1) extension of its operating range by more than a factor of two, from 12-18 GHz to 12-26 GHz, which allows a much wider range of species to be characterized; (2) improved detection sensitivity owing to use of cryogenic…

This work evaluates the viability of polyimide and parylene-C for passivation of lithium-drifted silicon (Si(Li)) detectors. The passivated Si(Li) detectors will form the particle tracker and X-ray detector of the General Antiparticle Spectrometer (GAPS) experiment, a balloon-borne experiment optimized to detect cosmic antideuterons produced in dark matter annihilations or decays. Successful passivation coatings were achieved by thermally curing polyimides, and the optimized coatings form an excellent barrier against humidity and organic contamination. The passivated Si(Li) detectors deliver $…
The ATHENA X-ray Observatory is the second large-class mission in the ESA Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 science programme. One of the two on-board instruments is the X-IFU, an imaging spectrometer based on a large array of TES microcalorimeters. To reduce the particle-induced background, the spectrometer works in combination with a Cryogenic Anticoincidence detector (CryoAC), placed less than 1 mm below the TES array. The last CryoAC single-pixel prototypes, namely AC-S7 and AC-S8, are based on large area (1 cm2) Silicon absorbers sensed by 65 parallel-connected iridium TES. This design has been ado…
The X-IFU is the cryogenic spectrometer onboard the future ATHENA X-ray observatory. It is based on a large array of TES microcalorimeters, which works in combination with a Cryogenic AntiCoincidence detector (CryoAC). This is necessary to reduce the particle background level thus enabling part of the mission science goals. Here we present the first joint test of X-IFU TES array and CryoAC Demonstration Models, performed in a FDM setup. We show that it is possible to operate properly both detectors, and we provide a preliminary demonstration of the anti-coincidence capability of the system ach…
Fast (sub-second) spectroscopy with high spectral resolution is of vital importance for revealing quantum chemistry kinetics of complex chemical and biological reactions. Fourier transform (FT) spectrometers can achieve high spectral resolution and operate at hundreds of ms time scales in rapid-scan mode. However, the linear translation of a scanning mirror imposes stringent time-resolution limitations to these systems, which makes simultaneous high spectral and temporal resolution impossible. Here, we demonstrate an FT spectrometer whose operational principle is based on continuous rotational…
