Let f and g two rational functions having the same Julia set J_f. Lets suppose that f has a rational indifferent periodic point and that the critical set of f is disjoint of J_f. Then or J_f has to be equal to P^1, a circle, an arc of a circle for some cordinate or f and g has to verify an equation of the type: $$f^{m_1}\circ g\circ f^{m_2}\circ\cdotc\circ f^{m_n}\circ g=f^m.$$
We give three families of parabolic rational maps and show that every Cantor set of circles as the Julia set of a non-hyperbolic rational map must be quasisymmetrically equivalent to the Julia set of one map in these families for suitable parameters. Combining a result obtained before, we give a complete classification of the Cantor circles Julia sets in the sense of quasisymmetric equivalence. Moreover, we study the regularity of the components of the Cantor circles Julia sets and establish a sufficient and necessary condition when a component of a Cantor circles Julia set is a quasicircle.
In this article we address the following question, whose interest was recently renewed by problems arising in arithmetic dynamics: under which conditions does there exist a local biholomorphism between the Julia sets of two given one-dimensional rational maps? In particular we find criteria ensuring that such a local isomorphism is induced by an algebraic correspondence. This extends and unifies classical results due to Baker, Beardon, Eremenko, Levin, Przytycki and others. The proof involves entire curves and positive currents.
For Cantor circle Julia sets of hyperbolic rational maps, we prove that they are quasisymmetrically equivalent to standard Cantor circles (i.e., connected components are round circles). This gives a quasisymmetric uniformization of all Cantor circle Julia sets of hyperbolic rational maps. By analyzing the combinatorial information of the rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles, we give a computational formula of the number of the Cantor circle hyperbolic components in the moduli space of rational maps for any fixed degree. We calculate the Hausdorff dimensions of the Julia sets which…
It was known that the Sierpiński carpets can appear as the Julia sets in the families of some rational maps. In this article we present a criterion that guarantees the existence of the carpet Julia sets in some rational maps having exactly one fixed (super-) attracting or parabolic basin. We show that this criterion can be applied to some well known rational maps, such as McMullen maps and Morosawa-Pilgrim family. Moreover, we give also some special examples whose Julia sets are Sierpiński carpets.
We prove the existence of rational maps whose Julia sets are Sierpiński carpets having positive area. Such rational maps can be constructed such that they either contain a Cremer fixed point, a Siegel disk or are infinitely renormalizable. We also construct some Sierpiński carpet Julia sets with zero area but with Hausdorff dimension two. Moreover, for any given number $s\in(1,2)$, we prove the existence of Sierpiński carpet Julia sets having Hausdorff dimension exactly $s$.
We consider the dynamics of rational semigroups (semigroups of rational maps) on the Riemann sphere. We provide proof that a random backward iteration algorithm to draw the pictures of the Julia sets, previously proven to work in the context of iteration of a rational map of degree two or more, extends to finitely generated rational semigroups (of a certain type). We also provide some consequences of this result.
Recently Merenkov and Sabitova introduced the notion of a homogeneous planar set. Using this notion they proved a result for Sierpi${ń}$ski carpet Julia sets of hyperbolic rational maps that relates the diameters of the peripheral circles to the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set. We extend this theorem to Julia sets (not necessarily Sierpi${ń}$ski carpets) of semi-hyperbolic rational maps, and prove a stronger version of the theorem that was conjectured by Merenkov and Sabitova.
This article deals with the question of local connectivity of the Julia set of polynomials and rational maps. It essentially presents conjectures and questions.
Sun Daochun and Yang Lo have shown that many results of the Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational functions extend to quasiregular self-maps of the Riemann sphere for which the degree exceeds the dilatation. We show that in this context, in contrast to the case of rational functions, the Julia set may have Hausdorff dimension zero. On the other hand, we exhibit a gauge function depending on the degree and the dilatation such that the Hausdorff measure with respect to this gauge function is always positive, but may be finite.
In this paper, the main focus is on the Sierpinski carpet Julia sets of the rational maps with non-recurrent critical points. We study the uniform quasicircle property of the peripheral circles, the relatively separated property of the peripheral circles and the locally porous property of these carpets. We also establish some quasisymmetric rigidities of these carpets, which generalizes the main results of Bonk-Lyubich-Merenkov to the postcritically infinite case. In the end we give a strategy to construct a class of postcritically infinite rational maps whose Julia sets are quasisymetrically …
Many results of the Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational functions extend to uniformly quasiregular maps in higher dimensions. We obtain results of this type for certain classes of quasiregular maps which are not uniformly quasiregular.
We consider the dynamics of semi-hyperbolic semigroups generated by finitely many rational maps on the Riemann sphere. Assuming that the nice open set condition holds it is proved that there exists a geometric measure on the Julia set with exponent $h$ equal to the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set. Both $h$-dimensional Hausdorff and packing measures are finite and positive on the Julia set and are mutually equivalent with Radon-Nikodym derivatives uniformly separated from zero and infinity. All three fractal dimensions, Hausdorff, packing and box counting are equal. It is also proved that …
Let $f$ be a rational map with degree at least two. We prove that $f$ has at least $2$ disjoint and infinite critical orbits in the Julia set if it has a Herman ring. This result is sharp in the following sense: there exists a cubic rational map having exactly two critical grand orbits but also having a Herman ring. In particular, $f$ has no Herman rings if it has at most one infinite critical orbit in the Julia set. These criterions derive some known results about the rational maps without Herman rings.
It is well-known that the Julia set J(f) of a rational map is uniformly perfect; that is, every ring domain which separates J(f) has bounded modulus, with the bound depending only on f. In this article we prove that an analogous result is true in higher dimensions; namely, that the Julia set J(f) of a uniformly quasiregular mapping f in R^n is uniformly perfect. In particular, this implies that the Julia set of a uniformly quasiregular mapping has positive Hausdorff dimension.
We investigate the dynamics of semigroups of rational maps on the Riemann sphere. To establish a fractal theory of the Julia sets of infinitely generated semigroups of rational maps, we introduce a new class of semigroups which we call nicely expanding rational semigroups. More precisely, we prove Bowen's formula for the Hausdorff dimension of the pre-Julia sets, which we also introduce in this paper. We apply our results to the study of the Julia sets of non-hyperbolic rational semigroups. For these results, we do not assume the cone condition, which has been assumed in the study of infinite …
It is well-known that the Julia set of a hyperbolic rational map is quasisymmetrically equivalent to the standard Cantor set. Using the uniformization theorem of David and Semmes, this result comes down to the fact that such a Julia set is both uniformly perfect and uniformly disconnected. We study the analogous question for Julia sets of UQR maps in $\mathbb{S}^n$, for $n\geq 2$. Introducing hyperbolic UQR maps, we show that the Julia set of such a map is uniformly disconnected if it is totally disconnected. Moreover, we show that if $E$ is a compact, uniformly perfect and uniformly disconnec…
Iterated monodromy groups of postcritically-finite rational maps form a rich class of self-similar groups with interesting properties. There are examples of such groups that have intermediate growth, as well as examples that have exponential growth. These groups arise from polynomials. We show exponential growth of the $\operatorname{IMG}$ of several non-polynomial maps. These include rational maps whose Julia set is the whole sphere, rational maps with Sierpiński carpet Julia set, and obstructed Thurston maps. Furthermore, we construct the first example of a non-renormalizable polynomial with…

The Fatou-Julia theory for rational functions has been extended both to transcendental meromorphic functions and more recently to several different types of quasiregular mappings in higher dimensions. We extend the iterative theory to quasimeromorphic mappings with an essential singularity at infinity and at least one pole, constructing the Julia set for these maps. We show that this Julia set shares many properties with those for transcendental meromorphic functions and for quasiregular mappings of punctured space.
The Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational functions has been extended to quasiregular mappings in higher dimension by various authors. The purpose of this paper is an analogous extension of the iteration theory of transcendental entire functions. Here the Julia set is defined as the set of all points such that complement of the forward orbit of any neighbourhood has capacity zero. It is shown that for maps which are not of polynomial type the Julia set is non-empty and has many properties of the classical Julia set of transcendental entire functions.
We study the quasisymmetric geometry of the Julia sets of McMullen maps $f_λ(z)=z^m+λ/z^\ell$, where $\ell$, $m\geq 2$ are integers satisfying $1/\ell+1/m<1$ and $λ\in\mathbb{C}\setminus\{0\}$. If the free critical points of $f_λ$ are escaped to the infinity, we prove that the Julia set $J_λ$ of $f_λ$ is quasisymmetrically equivalent to either a standard Cantor set, a standard Cantor set of circles or a round Sierpiński carpet (which is also standard in some sense). If the free critical points are not escaped, we give a sufficient condition on $λ$ such that $J_λ$ is a Sierpiński carpet and pro…
The dynamics of all quadratic Newton maps of rational functions are completely described. The Julia set of such a map is found to be either a Jordan curve or totally disconnected. It is proved that no Newton map with degree at least three of any rational function is conformally conjugate to a unicritical polynomial(i.e., with exactly one finite critical point). However, there are cubic Newton maps which are conformally conjugate to other polynomials. The Julia set of such a Newton map is shown to be a closed curve. It is a Jordan curve whenever the Newton map has two attracting fixed points.
The Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational and transcendental entire functions has recently been extended to quasiregular maps in more than two real dimensions. Our goal in this paper is similar; we extend the iteration theory of analytic self-maps of the punctured plane to quasiregular self-maps of punctured space. We define the Julia set as the set of points for which the complement of the forward orbit of any neighbourhood of the point is a finite set. We show that the Julia set is non-empty, and shares many properties with the classical Julia set of an analytic function. These properties…
The Julia quotient measures the ratio of the distance of a function value from the boundary to the distance from the boundary. The Julia-Carathéodory theorem on the bidisk states that if the Julia quotient is bounded along some sequence of nontangential approach to some point in the torus, the function must have directional derivatives in all directions pointing into the bidisk. The directional derivative, however, need not be a linear function of the direction in that case. In this note, we show that if the Julia quotient is uniformly bounded along every sequence of nontangential approach, th…
This paper deals with both complex dynamical systems and conformal iterated function systems. We study finitely generated expanding semigroups of rational maps with overlaps on the Riemann sphere. We show that if a $d$-parameter family of such semigroups satisfies the transversality condition, then for almost every parameter value the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set is the minimum of 2 and the zero of the pressure function. Moreover, the Hausdorff dimension of the exceptional set of parameters is estimated. We also show that if the zero of the pressure function is greater than 2, then typ…
In this paper we discuss the dynamics as well as the structure of the parameter space of the one-parameter family of rational maps $\ds f_t(z)=-\frac{t}{4}\frac{(z^{2}-2)^{2}}{z^{2}-1}$ with free critical orbit $\pm\sqrt{2}\xrightarrow{(2)}0\xrightarrow{(4)}t\xrightarrow{(1)}...$. In particular it is shown that for any escape parameter $t$ the boundary of the basin at infinity $\A_t$ is either a Cantor set, a curve with infinitely many complementary components, or else a Jordan curve. In the latter case the Julia set is a Sierpiński curve.
For an arbitrary complex number $a\neq 0$ we consider the distribution of values of the Riemann zeta-function $ζ$ at the $a$-points of the function $Δ$ which appears in the functional equation $ζ(s)=Δ(s)ζ(1-s)$. These $a$-points $δ_a$ are clustered around the critical line $1/2+i\mathbb{R}$ which happens to be a Julia line for the essential singularity of $ζ$ at infinity. We observe a remarkable average behaviour for the sequence of values $ζ(δ_a)$.
Let $f$ be an endomorphism of $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^k$ of degree $>1$, and assume that for any cyclic Fatou component $W$ of $f$ having a period $p\in\mathbb{N}$, the equilibrium measure $μ_f$ has a positive charge on the boundary of $W$ if and only if $f^{-p}(W)=W$. Then we obtain a locally uniform a priori bound of the dynamics of $f$, which in particular yields a Diophantine-type estimate of the dynamics of $f$ on its domaines singuliers. We also point out that in the case of $k=1$, the statement of our assumption is related to both the impossibility for the Julia set of $f$ to be the bound…
In this note, we give an elementary proof of the absence of invariant line fields on the conical Julia set of an analytic function of one variable. This proof applies not only to rational as well as transcendental meromorphic functions (where it was previously known), but even to the extremely general setting of Ahlfors islands maps as defined by Adam Epstein. In fact, we prove a more general result on the absence of invariant_differentials_, measurable with respect to a conformal measure that is supported on the (unbranched) conical Julia set. This includes the study of cohomological equation…
We consider the dynamics of expanding semigroups generated by finitely many rational maps on the Riemann sphere. We show that for an analytic family of such semigroups, the Bowen parameter function is real-analytic and plurisubharmonic. Combining this with a result obtained by the first author, we show that if for each semigroup of such an analytic family of expanding semigroups satisfies the open set condition, then the function of the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set is real-analytic and plurisubharmonic. Moreover, we provide an extensive collection of classes of examples of analytic fam…
