We construct all codimension 1 multi-germs of maps (k^n,T)-->(k^p,0) with n > p-2, (n,p) nice dimensions, k = R or C, by augmentation and concetenation operations, starting from mon-germs (|T|=1). As an application, we prove general results for multi-germs of corank <2: every one has a real form with real perturbation carrying the vanishing homology of the complexification, every one is quasihomogeneous, and when n=p-1 every one has image Milnor number equal to 1 (the comparable result for n>p-1 being already known).
We study the simplicity of map-germs obtained by the operation of augmentation and describe how to obtain their versal unfoldings. When the augmentation comes from an $\mathscr{A}_e$-codimension 1 germ or the augmenting function is a Morse function, we give a complete characterisation for simplicity. These characterisations yield all the simple augmentations in all explicitly obtained classifications of $\mathscr{A}$-simple monogerms except for one ($F_4$ in Mond's list from $\mathbb{C}^2$ to $\mathbb{C}^3$). Moreover, using our results we produce a list of simple augmentations from $\mathbb{C…
We extend the results from the previous paper by A. Frühbis-Krüger and the author [arXiv:1501.01915] to the vanishing topology of those singularities in the title. Studying the case of possibly non-isolated singularities in the Tjurina- transform, we reveal that in dimension 3 and 2 there always is exactly one special vanishing cycle in degree 2 closely related to the determinantal structure of the singularity.
Isolated Cohen-Macaulay codimension 2 singularities share many common features with isolated complete intersection singularities, but they also exhibit some striking new behaviour. One such instance was recently observed by Damon and Pike in their study of the vanishing topology and Euler characteristic, where they took this class of singularities as examples. In this article, we explore their findings further by determining the Betti numbers explicitly and explain the new phenomena. An important tool here is the Tjurina modification relating a Cohen-Macaulay codimension 2 singularity to a fin…
Based on the celebrated result on zeros of holomorphic 1-forms on complex varieties of general type by Popa and Schnell, we study holomorphic 1-forms on $n$-dimensional varieties of Kodaira dimension $n-1$. We show that a complex minimal smooth projective variety $X$ of Kodaira dimension $κ(X)=\dim X-1$ admits a holomorphic 1-form without zero if and only if there is a smooth morphism from $X$ to an elliptic curve. Furthermore, for a general smooth projective variety (not necessarily minimal) $X$ of Kodaira codimension one, we give a structure theorem for $X$ given that $X$ admits a holomorphi…
We define the extra-nice dimensions and prove that the subset of locally stable 1-parameter families in $C^{\infty}(N\times[0,1],P)$, also known as pseudo-isotopies, is dense if and only if the pair of dimensions $(\dim N, \dim P)$ is in the extra-nice dimensions. This result is parallel to Mather's characterization of the nice dimensions as the pairs $(n,p)$ for which stable maps are dense. The extra-nice dimensions are characterized by the property that discriminants of stable germs in one dimension higher have $\mathcal A_e$-codimension 1 hyperplane sections. They are also related to the si…
We study H. Dao's invariant $η_c^R$ of pairs of modules defined over a complete intersection ring $R$ of codimension $c$ having an isolated singularity. Our main result is that $η_c^R$ vanishes for all pairs of modules when $R$ is a {\em graded} complete intersection ring of codimension $c > 1$ having an isolated singularity. A consequence of this result is that all pairs of modules over such a ring are $c$-$\Tor$-rigid.
We prove that the preimage of a germ of a singular analytic hypersurface under a germ of a finite holomorphic map $g: (\mathbb{C}^n,0) \rightarrow (\mathbb{C}^n,0)$ is again singular. This provides a generalization of previous results of this nature by Ebenfelt-Rothschild [Comm. Anal. Geom. 15 (2007), no. 2, 491-507], Lebl [arXiv:0812.2498], and Denkowski [Manuscripta Math. 149 (2016), no. 1-2, 83-91]. The same statement is proved for pullbacks of singular codimension one holomorphic foliations.
Given the germ of an analytic function on affine space with a smooth critical locus, we prove that the constancy of the stalk cohomology of the Milnor fiber in lowest degree off a codimension two subset of the critical locus implies that the vanishing cycles are concentrated in lowest degree and are constant.
Let $(X,0)\subset (\mathbb{C}^n,0)$ be an irreducible weighted homogeneous singularity curve and let $f:(X,0)\to(\mathbb{C}^2,0)$ be a map germ finite, one-to-one and weighted homogeneous with the same weights of $(X,0)$. We show that $\mathscr{A}_e$-$codim(X,f)=μ_I(f)$, where $\mathscr{A}_e$-$codim(X,f)$ is the $\mathscr{A}_e$-codimension, i.e., the minimum number of parameters in a versal deformation and $μ_I(f)$ is the image Milnor number, i.e., the number of vanishing cycles in the image of a stabilisation of $f$.
A differential form vanishing on the tangent space at smooth points of a reduced embedded analytic germ is called conormal. For proving that a conormal one--form of a hypersurface vanishes at its singularities we state a Bertini--type theorem.
In this paper we prove an explicit formula which compares the dimensions of the spaces of vanishing cycles in a Galois cover of degree p between formal germ of curves over a complete discrete valuation ring of inequal characteristics (0,p). This formula can be easily generalised to the case of a Galois cover with group which is nilpotent or which has a normal p-Sylow subgroup. The results of this paper play a key role in [Sa-1] where is studied the semi-stable reduction of Galois covers of degree p above semi-stable curves over a complete discrete valuation ring of inequal characteristics (0,p…
Let f and g be holomorphic function-germs vanishing at the origin of a complex analytic germ of dimension three. Suppose that they have no common irreducible component and that the real analytic map-germ given by the multiplication of f by the conjugate of g has an isolated critical value at 0. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the real analytic map-germ to have a Milnor fibration and we prove that in this case the boundary of its Milnor fibre is a Waldhausen manifold. As an intermediate milestone we describe geometrically the Milnor fibre of map-germs given by the multiplication…
In this paper we prove that given a pair $(X,D)$ of a threefold $X$ and a boundary divisor $D$ with mild singularities, if $(K_X+D)$ is movable, then the orbifold second Chern class $c_2$ of $(X,D)$ is pseudo-effective. This generalizes the classical result of Miyaoka on the pseudo-effectivity of $c_2$ for minimal models. As an application we give a simple solution to Kawamata's effective non-vanishing conjecture in dimension $3$, where we prove that $H^0(X, K_X+H)\neq 0$, whenever $K_X+H$ is nef and $H$ is an ample, effective, reduced Cartier divisor. Furthermore, we study Lang-Vojta's conjec…
Let X be a smooth complex projective manifold of dimension n equipped with an ample line bundle L and a rank k holomorphic vector bundle E. We assume that 0< k <=n, that X, E and L are defined over the reals and denote by RX the real locus of X. Then, we estimate from above and below the expected Betti numbers of the vanishing loci in RX of holomorphic real sections of E tensored with L^d, where d is a large enough integer. Moreover, given any closed connected codimension k submanifold S of R^n with trivial normal bundle, we prove that a real section of E tensored with L^d has a positive proba…
In this revised form, the proof of the principal lemma has been simplified and the main theorem has been extended to all characteristics for those varieties which are smooth in codimension one. This principal theorem essentially says the following : given an ample line bundle O(1) on a projective variety X and a fixed upper bound M on the multiplicities, there exists a lower bound D such that any generic union of multiple points of multiplicity at most M imposes independent conditions on the sections of O(d) for d>D. Here a multiple point is the closed subscheme defined by a power m of the ide…
We show that the universal abelian cover of the complement to a germ of a reducible divisor on a complex space $Y$ with isolated singularity is $(dimY-2)$-connected provided that the divisor has normal crossings outside of the singularity of $Y$. We apply this result to obtain a vanishing property for the cohomology of local systems of rank one and we also study vanishing in the case of local systems of higher rank. This second version contains a corrected proof of Corollary 4.1 from the first version.
Let \A be an affine hyperplane arrangement in $\C^\ell$ with complement $U$. Let $f_1, \..., f_n$ be linear polynomials defining the hyperplanes of \A, and $A^\cdot$ the algebra of differential forms generated by the 1-forms $d \log f_1, \..., d \log f_n$. To each $l \in \C^n$ we associate the master function $Φ=Φ_l = \prod_{i=1}^n f_i^{l_i}$ on $U$ and the closed logarithmic 1-form $ω= d \log Φ$. We assume $ω$ is an element of a rational linear subspace $D$ of $A^1$ of dimension $q>1$ such that the multiplication map $\bigwedge^k(D) \to A^k$ is zero for $p<k\leq q$. With this assumption, we p…
