Using some theory of (rational) elliptic surfaces plus elementary properties of a Mordell-Weil group regarded as module over the endomorphism ring of a (CM) elliptic curve, we present examples of such surfaces with j-invariant zero. In particular, a K3 example is given with the maximal possible rank 18, plus that many explicit independent sections on it. Several other high rank cases are discussed; for instance Shioda's example with rank 68.
This paper gives additional background in algebraic geometry as an accompaniment to the article, ``Formal Groups, Elliptic Curves, and some Theorems of Couveignes'' [arXiv:math.NT/9708215]. Section 1 discusses the addition law on elliptic curves, and Sections 2 and 3 explain about function fields, uniformizers, and power series expansions with respect to a uniformizer.
We give explicit generators for subgroups of finite index of the Mordell-Weil groups of several families of elliptic surfaces introduced by Masato Kuwata.
Given an elliptic surface $\mathcal{E}\to\mathcal{C}$ over a field $k$ of characteristic zero equipped with zero section $O$ and another section $P$ of infinite order, we give a simple and explicit upper bound on the number of points where $O$ is tangent to a multiple of $P$.
We consider surfaces with a double elliptic fibration, with two sections. We study the orbits under the induced translation automorphisms proving that, under natural conditions, the finite orbits are confined to a curve. This goes in a similar direction of (and is motivated by) recent work by Cantat-Dujardin, although we use very different methods and obtain related but different results. As a sample of application of similar arguments, we prove a new case of the Zilber-Pink conjecture, namely Theorem 1.5, for certain schemes over a 2-dimensional base, which was known to lead to substantial di…
Kaneko and Sakai recently observed that certain elliptic curves whose associated newforms (by the modularity theorem) are given by the eta-quotients can be characterized by a particular differential equation involving modular forms and Ramanujan-Serre differential operator. In this paper, we study certain properties of modular parametrizations associated to the elliptic curves over Q, and as a consequence we generalize and explain some of their findings.
Let E be an elliptic curve over the function field Q(t). Suppose that for every number field L\not=Q and every element tau\in L such that the specialization E_tau is smooth, the curve E_tau has a non-trivial torsion point over L. We show that E has a non-trivial torsion point over Q(t). This provides evidence in support of a question of Graber-Harris-Mazur-Starr on rational pseudo-sections of arithmetic surjective morphisms.
We consider elliptic surfaces $\mathcal{E}$ over a field $k$ equipped with zero section $O$ and another section $P$ of infinite order. If $k$ has characteristic zero, we show there are only finitely many points where $O$ is tangent to a multiple of $P$. Equivalently, there is a finite list of integers such that if $n$ is not divisible by any of them, then $nP$ is not tangent to $O$. Such tangencies can be interpreted as unlikely intersections. If $k$ has characteristic zero or $p>3$ and $\mathcal{E}$ is very general, then we show there are no tangencies between $O$ and $nP$. We apply these res…
Given a rational elliptic surface X over an algebraically closed field, we investigate whether a given natural number k can be the intersection number of two sections of X. If not, we say that k a gap number. We try to answer when gap numbers exist, how they are distributed and how to identify them. We use Mordell-Weil lattices as our main tool, which connects the investigation to the classical problem of representing integers by positive-definite quadratic forms.
The Thue-Siegel method is used to obtain an upper bound for the number of primitive integral solutions to a family of quartic Thue's inequalities. This will provide an upper bound for the number of integer points on a family of elliptic curves with j-invariant equal to 1728.
For several congruence subgroups of low levels and their conjugates, we derive differential equations satisfied by the Eisenstein series of weight 4 and relate them to elliptic curves, whose associated new forms of weight 2 constitute the list of Martin and Ono of new forms given by eta-products/quotients.
In this paper, we will talk about the titled elliptic curve defined over imaginary quadratic fields such as $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is congruent to 3 modulo 8 and $(p,q)=1$.
This work is a sequel of a previous work of one of the authors (Y.Ô), which treated certain congruence relation between an elliptic Gauss sum and a coefficient of power series expansion at the origin of the lemniscate sine function. We extend the previous result (in \cite{O}) which concerned only for non-vanishing elliptic Gauss sums. We give new congruence relations between power series coefficients of the lemniscate cosine function, which hold if and only if the corresponding elliptic Gauss sum vanishes.
We study generalisations to totally real fields of methods originating with Wiles and Taylor-Wiles. In view of the results of Skinner-Wiles on elliptic curves with ordinary reduction, we focus here on the case of supersingular reduction. Combining these, we then obtain some partial results on the modularity problem for semistable elliptic curves, and end by giving some applications of our results, for example proving the modularity of all semistable elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2})$.
The arithmetic of elliptic curves, namely polynomial addition and scalar multiplication, can be described in terms of global sections of line bundles on $E\times E$ and $E$, respectively, with respect to a given projective embedding of $E$ in $\mathbb{P}^r$. By means of a study of the finite dimensional vector spaces of global sections, we reduce the problem of constructing and finding efficiently computable polynomial maps defining the addition morphism or isogenies to linear algebra. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method by improving the best known complexity for doubling and tripli…
In this paper the family of elliptic curves over \Q given by the equation E_{p}: Y^2=(X-p)^3+X^3+(X+p)^3 where p is a prime number, is studied. It is shown that the maximal rank of the elliptic curves is at most 3 and some conditions under which we have rank(E_p(\Q))=0 or rank(E_p(\Q))=1 or rank(E_p(\Q))>=2 are given. Moreover It is shown that in the family there are elliptic curves with rank 0,1,2 and 3.
We first normalize the derivative Weierstrass $\wp'$-function appearing in Weierstrass equations which give rise to analytic parametrizations of elliptic curves by the Dedekind $η$-function. And, by making use of this normalization of $\wp'$ we associate certain elliptic curve to a given imaginary quadratic field $K$ and then generate an infinite family of ray class fields over $K$ by adjoining to $K$ torsion points of such elliptic curve. We further construct some ray class invariants of imaginary quadratic fields by utilizing singular values of the normalization of $\wp'$, as the $y$-coordin…
Certain elliptic divisibility sequences are shown to contain only finitely many prime power terms. In certain circumstances, the methods show only finitely many terms have length below a given bound.
We shall consider sections of an elliptic scheme $\mathcal{E}$ over a(n affine) base curve $B$, and study the points of $B$ where the section takes a torsion value. In particular, we shall relate the distribution in $B$ of these points with the canonical height of the section, proving an integral formula involving a measure on $B$ coming from the so-called Betti map of the section. We shall show that this measure is the same appearing in dynamical issues related to the section. This analysis will also involve the multiplicity with which a torsion value is attained, which is an independent prob…
We prove new sharp asymptotic for counting the semistable elliptic curves with two marked Weierstrass points at $\infty$ and $0$ and also the cases where $0$ is a 2-torsion or a 3-torsion marked Weierstrass point over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ by the bounded height of discriminant $Δ(X)$. We consider the motivic probabilities over any basefield $K$ with $\text{char}(K) \neq 2,3$ of picking a nonsingular semistable elliptic surface over $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ with two marked Weierstrass sections at $\infty$ and $0$ such that marked Weierstrass section at $0$ is 2-torsion or 3-torsion. In the end, we formulat…
In this paper, we study some basic analytic properties of the boundary term of Fesenko's two-dimensional zeta integrals. In the case of the rational number field, we show that this term is the Laplace transform of certain infinite series consisting of $K$-Bessel functions. It is known that the non-positivity property of the fourth log derivative of such series is a sufficient condition for the Riemann hypothesis of the Hasse-Weil $L$-function attached to an elliptic curve. We show that such non-positivity is a necessary condition under some technical assumption.
Let $P$ be a non-torsion point on the elliptic curve $E_{a}: y^{2}=x^{3}+ax$. We show that if $a$ is fourth-power-free and either $n>2$ is even or $n>1$ is odd with $x(P)<0$ or $x(P)$ a perfect square, then the $n$-th element of the elliptic divisibility sequence generated by $P$ always has a primitive divisor.
Let $N$ be a square-free integer such that the arithmetic group $Γ_0(N)^+$ has genus zero; there are $44$ such groups. Let $j_N$ denote the associated Hauptmodul normalized to have residue equal to one and constant term equal to zero in its $q$-expansion. In this article we prove that the Hauptmodul at any elliptic point of the surface associated to $Γ_0(N)^+$ is an algebraic integer. Moreover, for each such $N$ and elliptic point $e$, we show how to explicitly evaluate $j_{N}(e)$ and provide the list of generating polynomials (with small coefficients) of the class fields or their subfields co…
We consider the practical computation of rational points on y^2=x(x^2+ax+b). The algebra necessary for a 4-descent procedure is described. A simple further descent is then described which only uses integer arithmetic. Numerous examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of this extra descent. Currently, the largest point found has height 51.15 or 102.3, depending on which height normalisation you use.
Assuming the finiteness of the Shafarevich-Tate group of elliptic curves over number fields we make several observations on the birational Grotendieck anabelian setion conjecture. We prove that the birational setion conjecture for curves over number fields can be reduced to the case of elliptic curves. In this case we prove that, as a consequence of a result of Stoll, a section of the exact sequence of the absolute Galois group of an elliptic curve over a number field arises from a rational point if and only if the induced section of the corresponding (geometrically abelianised) arithmetic fun…
In the present paper, we generalize the celebrated classical lemma of Birch and Heegner on quadratic twists of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. We prove the existence of explicit infinite families of quadratic twists with analytic ranks $0$ and $1$ for a large class of elliptic curves, and use Heegner points to explicitly construct rational points of infinite order on the twists of rank $1$. In addition, we show that these families of quadratic twists satisfy the $2$-part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture when the original curve does. We also prove a new result in the direction of …
Let E be an elliptic curve over Q with prime conductor p. For each non-negative integer n we put K_n:=Q(E[p^n]). The aim of this paper is to estimate the order of the p-Sylow group of the ideal class group of K_n. We give a lower bounds in terms of the Mordell-Weil rank of $E(\Q)$. As an application of our result, we give an example such that p^{2n} divides the class number of the field $K_n$ in the case of $p=5077$ for each positive integer n.
We characterize all infinite-dimensional graded virtual modules for Thompson's sporadic simple group, whose graded traces are weight 3/2 weakly holomorphic modular forms satisfying certain special properties. We then use these modules to detect the non-triviality of Mordell--Weil, Selmer, and Tate--Shafarevich groups of quadratic twists of certain elliptic curves.
We develop two applications of the Kronecker's limit formula associated to elliptic Eisenstein series: A factorization theorem for holomorphic modular forms, and a proof of Weil's reciprocity law. Several examples of the general factorization results are computed, specifically for certain moonshine groups, congruence subgroups, and, more generally, non-compact subgroups with one cusp. In particular, we explicitly compute the Kronecker limit function associated to certain elliptic points for a few small level moonshine groups.
The study of alternative models for elliptic curves has found recent interest from cryptographic applications, once it was recognized that such models provide more efficiently computable algorithms for the group law than the standard Weierstrass model. Examples of such models arise via symmetries induced by a rational torsion structure. We analyze the module structure of the space of sections of the addition morphisms, determine explicit dimension formulas for the spaces of sections and their eigenspaces under the action of torsion groups, and apply this to specific models of elliptic curves w…
We prove that the number of rational points of bounded height on certain del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 defined over Q grows linearly, as predicted by Manin's conjecture. Along the way, we investigate the average number of integral points of small naive height on quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve with full rational 2-torsion.
Nishiyama introduced a lattice theoretic classification of the elliptic fibrations on a $K3$ surface. In a previous paper we used his method to exhibit $52$ elliptic fibrations, up to isomorphisms, of the singular $K3$ surface of discriminant $-12$. We prove here that the list is complete with a $53$th fibration, thanks to a remark of Elkies and Schütt. We characterize the fibration both theoretically and with a Weierstrass model.
For the study of the Mordell-Weil group of an elliptic curve ${\bf E}$ over a complex function field of a projective curve $B$, the first author introduced the use of differential-geometric methods arising from Kähler metrics on $\mathcal H \times \mathbb C$ invariant under the action of the semi-direct product ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb R) \ltimes \mathbb R^2$. To a properly chosen geometric model $π: \mathcal E \to B$ of ${\bf E}$ as an elliptic surface and a non-torsion holomorphic section $σ: B \to \mathcal E$ there is an associated ``verticality'' $η_σ$ of $σ$ related to the locally defined Bett…
This survey paper concerns elliptic surfaces with section. We give a detailed overview of the theory including many examples. Emphasis is placed on rational elliptic surfaces and elliptic K3 surfaces. To this end, we particularly review the theory of Mordell-Weil lattices and address arithmetic questions.
Let $E$ be an elliptic surface over the curve $C$, defined over a number field $k$, let $P$ be a section of $E$, and let $\ell$ be a rational prime. For any non-singular fibre $E_t$, we bound the number of points $Q$ on $E_t$ of (algebraic) degree at most $D$ over $k$, such that $\ell^n Q=P_t$, for some $n\geq 1$. The bound obtained depends only on $\ell$, the surface and section in question, $D$, and the degree $[k(t):k]$; that is, it is uniform across all fibres of bounded degree. In special cases, we obtain more specific, in some instances sharp, bounds.
PhD dissertation consists in three lines of investigation involving rational elliptic surfaces, namely 1) a study of conic bundles on these surfaces; 2) an investigation of the possible intersection numbers of two sections and 3) a theorem regarding the set of fibers whose Mordell-Weil ranks are at least 3 units higher than the generic rank of the elliptic fibration.
In this paper, we study modularity of several functions which naturally arose in a recent paper of Lau and Zhou on open Gromov-Witten potentials of elliptic orbifolds. They derived a number of examples of indefinite theta functions, and we provide modular completions for several such functions which involve more complicated objects than ordinary modular forms. In particular, we give new closed formulas for special indefinite theta functions of type $(1,2)$ in terms of products of mock modular forms. This formula is also of independent interest.
