We construct examples of non-projective normal proper algebraic surfaces and discuss the pathological behaviour of their Neron-Severi group. Our surfaces are birational to the product of a projective line and a curve of higher genus.
We study projective manifolds M admitting a (flat) holomorphic normal projective connection and show that the Iitaka fibration (up to etale coverings) defines a smooth abelian group scheme structure on M.
We study the projective normality of a linearly normal special scroll R of degree d and speciality i over a smooth curve of genus g. If d>=4g-2i+1, we prove that the projective normality of the scroll is equivalent to the projective normality of its directrix curve of minimum degree.
In this article we prove new results on projective normality and normal presentation of adjunction bundle associated to an ample and globally generated line bundle on higher dimensional smooth projective varieties with nef canonical bundle. As one of the consequences of the main theorem, we give bounds on very ampleness and projective normality of pluricanonical linear systems on varieties of general type in dimensions three, four and five. These improve known such results.
We study the projective normality of a linearly normal special scroll R of degree d and speciality i over a smooth curve X of genus g. We relate it with the Clifford index of the base curve X. If d>=4g-2i-Cliff(X)+1, i>=3 and R is smooth, we prove that the projective normality of the scroll is equivalent to the projective normality of its directrix curve of minimum degree.
We investigate int-amplified endomorphisms on normal projective surfaces. We prove that the output of the equivariant MMP is either a Q-abelian surface, a (equivariant) quasi-étale quotient of a smooth projective surface, a Mori dream space, or a projective cone of an elliptic curve.
We show that an abelian surface embedded in P^N by a very ample line bundle L of type (1,2d) is projectively normal if and only if d>=4. This completes the study of the projective normality of abelian surfaces embedded by complete linear systems.
We list the irreducible reduced and not degenerate normal projective varieties $X\subset\mathbb{P}^N$ of dimension $n$ and degree five defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of char$(k) = 0$. In the smooth case, or when $n = 2$, we give also classification results for any algebraically closed field $k$ of char$(k) \geq 0$.
We determine the splitting (isomorphism) type of the normal bundle of a generic genus-0 curve with 1 or 2 components in any projective space, as well as the (sometimes nontrivial) way the bundle deforms locally with a general deformation of the curve. We deduce an enumerative formula for divisorial loci of smooth rational curves whose normal bundle is of non-generic splitting type.
We classify smooth complex projective varieties $X \subset \proj^N$ of dimension $2s+1$ containing a linear subspace $Λ$ of dimension $s$ whose normal bundle $N_{Λ/X}$ is numerically effective.
For a polarized abelian variety $(X,L)$, Z. Jiang and G. Pareschi introduce an invariant $β(X,L)$, called the basepoint-freeness threshold. Using this invariant, we show that a general polarized abelian variety $(X,L)$ of dimension $g$ is projectively normal if $χ(L) \geq 2^{2g-1}$ and the type of $L$ is not $(2,4,\dots,4)$. This bound is sharp since it is known that any polarized abelian variety of type $(2,4,\dots,4)$ is not projectively normal. We also give an application of $β(X,L)$ to the Infinitesimal Torelli Theorem for $Y \in |L|$.
We prove that for a normal projective variety $X$ in characteristic 0, and a base-point free ample line bundle $L$ on it, the restriction map of divisor class groups $\Cl(X)\to \Cl(Y)$ is an isomorphism for a general member $Y\in |L|$ provided that $\dim{X}\geq 4$. This is a generalization of the Grothendieck-Lefschetz Theorem, for divisor class groups of singular varieties.
In this paper we consider a generalization of a well known result by Veronese about rational normal curves. More precisely, given a collection of linear spaces in $\PP^n$ we study the existence of rational normal curves intersecting each component of the configuration maximally. We introduce different methods to show existence and non-existence of such curves. We also show how to apply these techniques to the study of defectivity of Segre-Veronese varieties.
We give necessary and sufficient criteria for a smooth Enriques surface S in P^r to be scheme-theoretically an intersection of quadrics. Moreover we prove in many cases that, when S contains plane cubic curves, the intersection of the quadrics containing S is the union of S and the 2-planes spanned by the plane cubic curves. We also give a new (very quick) proof of the projective normality of S if the degree of S is at least 12.
Let $L$ be a very ample line bundle on a smooth curve $C$ of genus $g$ with $\frac{3g+3}{2}<°L\le 2g-5$. Then $L$ is normally generated if $°L>\max\{2g+2-4h^1(C,L), 2g-\frac{g-1}{6}-2h^1(C,L)\}$. Let $C$ be a triple covering of genus $p$ curve $C'$ with $C\stackrelϕ\to C'$ and $D$ a divisor on $C'$ with $4p<°D< \frac{g-1}{6}-2p$. Then $K_C(-ϕ^*D)$ becomes a very ample line bundle which is normally generated. As an application, we characterize some smooth projective surfaces.
We study the projective normality of a minimal surface $X$ which is a ramified double covering over a rational surface $S$ with $\dim|-K_S|\ge 1$. In particular Horikawa surfaces, the minimal surfaces of general type with $K^2_X=2p_g(X)-4$, are of this type, up to resolution of singularities. Let $π$ be the covering map from $X$ to $S$. We show that the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-invariant adjoint divisors $K_X+rπ^*A$ are normally generated, where the integer $r\ge 3$ and $A$ is an ample divisor on $S$.
For every p >= 5, we determine all Z_p-invariant nonsingular quartic surfaces in the three dimensional projective space over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In some cases, we also determine their full projective automorphism groups.
Our primary result is that a demi-normal quasi-projective variety can be embedded in a demi-normal projective variety. Recall that a demi-normal variety $X$ is a variety with properties $S_2$, $G_1$, and seminormality. Equivalently, $X$ has Serre's $S_2$ property and there is an open subvariety $U$ with complement of codimension at least 2 in $X$, such that the only singularities of $U$ are (analytically) double normal crossings. The term demi-normal was coined by Kollár in \cite{Kol13}. As a consequence of this embedding theorem, we prove a semi-smooth Grauert-Riemenschneider vanishing theore…
We bound the genus of a projective curve lying on a complete intersection surface in terms of its degree and the degrees of the defining equations of the surface on which it lies.
The authors give a complete classification of projective threefolds admitting a holomorphic normal projective connection. Moreover, they prove a general structure theorem on complex projective manifolds admitting a holomorphic normal projective connection, saying in particular, that any such manifold is either the projective space or minimal in the sense of Mori.
We prove that the formal completion of a complex projective surface along a rigid smooth curve with trivial normal bundle determines the birational equivalence class of the surface.
We construct a smooth complex projective rational surface with infinitely many mutually non-isomorphic real forms. This gives the first definite answer to a long standing open question if a smooth complex projective rational surface has only finitely many non-isomorphic real forms or not.
It is proved that a smooth rational surface in projective four-space, which is ruled by cubics or quartics has degree at most 12. It is also proved that a smooth rational surface in projective four-space which is the image of Fn by a linear system with "simple base points" (see text) has degree at most 12.
Given a web (multi-foliation) and a linear system on a projective surface we construct divisors cutting out the locus where some element of the linear system has abnormal contact with the leaf of the web. We apply these ideas to reobtain a classical result by Salmon on the number of lines on a projective surface. In a different vein, we investigate the number of lines and of disjoint lines contained in a projective surface and tangent to a contact distribution.
The aim of this paper is to present two different constructions of smooth rational surfaces in projective fourspace with degree 12 and sectional genus 13. In particular, we establish the existences of five different families of smooth rational surfaces in projective fourspace with the prescribed invariants.
The paper is a generalization of a result of I. Dolgachev, M. Mendes Lopes, and R. Pardini. We prove that a smooth projective complex surface $X$, not necessarily minimal, contains $h^{1,1}(X)-1$ disjoint $(-2)$-curves if and only if $X$ is isomorphic to a minimal rational ruled surface ${\bf F}_2$ or ${\bf P}^2$ or a fake projective plane. We also describe smooth projective complex surfaces $X$ with $h^{1,1}(X)-2$ disjoint $(-2)$-curves.
We characterize the integral Zariski decomposition of a smooth projective surface with Picard number 2 to partially solve a problem of B. Harbourne, P. Pokora, and H. Tutaj-Gasinska [Electron. Res. Announc. Math. Sci. 22 (2015), 103--108].
We show that the minimal model program on any smooth projective surface is realized as a variation of the moduli spaces of Bridgeland stable objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves.
We prove that a smooth surface, non of general type, in projective four-space, which lies on a quartic hypersurface with isolated singularities has degree at most 27 (in fact we prove a slightly more general result).
We consider possibly singular rational projective k*-surfaces and provide an explicit description of the unit component of the automorphism group in terms of isotropy group orders and intersection numbers of suitable invariant curves. As an application, we characterize the almost homogeneous rational projective k*-surfaces and we specify the two-dimensional groups acting almost transitively as well as the corresponding homogeneous spaces.
The following conjecture arose out of discussions between B. Harbourne, J. Roé, C. Cilberto and R. Miranda: for a smooth projective surface $X$ there exists a positive constant $c_X$ such that $h^1(\mathcal O_X(C))\le c_X h^0(\mathcal O_X(C))$ for every prime divisor $C$ on $X$. We show that the conjecture is true for some smooth projective surfaces with Picard number 2.
In the previous paper, we established an elementary bound for numbers of points of surfaces in the projective $3$-space over ${\Bbb F}_q$. In this paper, we give the complete list of surfaces that attain the elementary bound. Precisely those surfaces are the hyperbolic surface, the nonsingular Hermitian surface, and the surface of minimum degree containing all ${\Bbb F}_q$-points of the $3$-space.
We prove a bound on the number of lines on a smooth degree-d surface in three-dimensional projective space for $d \geq 3$. This bound improves a bound due to Segre and renders some of his arguments rigorous. It is the best known bound for $d \geq 6$.
We determine the complete list of anticanonically embedded quasi smooth log del Pezzo surfaces in weighted projective 3-spaces. We prove that many of these admit a Kähler-Einstein metric and most of them do not have tigers.
We construct complex projective schemes with Lyubeznik numbers of their cones depending on the choices of projective embeddings. This answers a question of G. Lyubeznik in the characteristic 0 case. It contrasts with a theorem of W. Zhang in the positive characteristic case where the Frobenius endomorphism is used. Reducibility of schemes is essential in our argument. B. Wang recently constructed examples of irreducible projective schemes (which are not normal) from our examples of reducible ones. So the question is still open in the normal singular case.
We prove an analogue of the Lefschetz (1,1) Theorem characterizing cohomology classes of Cartier divisors (or equivalently first Chern classes of line bundles) in the second integral cohomology. Let $X$ be a normal complex projective variety. We show that the classes of Cartier divisors in $H^2(X,Z)$ are precisely the classes $x$ such that (i) the image of $x$ in $H^2(X,C)$ (cohomology with complex coefficients) lies in $F^1 H^2(X,C)$ (first level of the Hodge filtration for Deligne's mixed Hodge structure), and (ii) $x$ is Zariski-locally trivial, i.e., there is a covering of $X$ by Zariski o…
The aim of this paper is to get some results about ruled surfaces which configure a projective theory of scrolls and ruled surfaces. Our ideas follow the viewpoint of Corrado Segre, but we employ the contemporaneous language of locally free sheaves. The results complete the exposition given by R. Hartshorne and they have not appeared before in the contemporaneous literature.
We give a complete classification of Q_l-cohomology projective planes with isolated ADE-singularities and numerically trivial canonical bundle in odd characteristic. This leads to a beautiful relation with certain Enriques surfaces which parallels the situation in characteristic zero, yet displays intriguing subtleties.
Ran proved that smooth codimension 2 varieties in ${\bf P}^{m+2}$ are $j$-normal if $(j+1)(3j-1)\le m-1$, in this paper we extend this result to small codimension projective varieties. Let $X$ be a r codimension subvariety of $\pro$, we prove that if the set $Σ_{(j+1)}$ of $(j+1)$-secants to $X$ through a generic external point is not empty, $2(r+1)j\leq m-r$ and $(j+1)((r+1)j-1)\leq m-1$ then $X$ is $j$-normal. If $X$ is given by the zero locus of a section of a rank $r$ vector bundle $E$ on $\pro$, we prove that $\textrm{deg} Σ_{j+1}=\frac{1}{(j+1)!}\prod_{i=0}^{j}c_{r}(E(-i))$. Moreover we …
In this paper we present a way of computing the degree of the secant (resp., tangent) variety of a smooth projective surface, under the assumption that the divisor giving the embedding in the projective space is $3$-very ample. This method exploits the link between these varieties and the Hilbert scheme $0$-dimensional subschemes of length $2$ of the surface.
Fake projective planes are smooth complex surfaces of general type with Betti numbers equal to that of the usual projective plane. Recent explicit constructions of fake projective planes embed them via their bicanonical embedding in $\mathbb P^9$. In this paper, we study Keum's fake projective plane $(a=7, p=2, \{7\}, D_3 2_7)$ and use the equations of \cite{Borisov} to construct an embedding of fake projective plane in $\mathbb P^5$. We also simplify the 84 cubic equations defining the fake projective plane in $\mathbb P^9$.
We show that there exists a fine moduli space for torsion-free sheaves on a projective surface, which have a "good framing" on a big and nef divisor. This moduli space is a quasi-projective scheme. This is accomplished by showing that such framed sheaves may be considered as stable pairs in the sense of Huybrechts and Lehn. We characterize the obstruction to the smoothness of the moduli space, and discuss some examples on rational surfaces.
Let $L$ be an ample line bundle over a smooth projective toric surface $X$. Then $L$ corresponds to a very ample lattice polytope $P$ that encodes many geometric properties of $L$. In this article, by studying $P$, we will give some necessary and sufficient numerical criteria for the adjoint series $|K_X+L|$ to be either nef or (very) ample.
The aim of this paper is to describe algebraic K3 surfaces with an even set of rational curves or of nodes. Their minimal possible Picard number is nine. We completely classify these K3 surfaces and after a carefull analysis of the divisors contained in the Picard lattice we study their projective models, giving necessary and sufficient conditions to have an even set. Moreover we investigate their relation with K3 surfaces with a Nikulin involution.
Let $\cM_{0,n}$ the moduli space of $n$-pointed rational curves. The aim of this note is to give a new, geometric construction of $\cM_{0,2n}^{GIT}$, the GIT compacification of $\cM_{0,2n}$, in terms of linear systems on $\PP^{2n-2}$ that contract all the rational normal curves passing by the points of a projective base. These linear systems are a projective analogue of the forgetful maps between $\bar{\cM}_{0,2n+1}$ and $\bar{\cM}_{0,2n}$. The construction is performed via a study of the so-called $\textit{contraction}$ maps from the Knudsen-Mumford compactification $\bar{\cM}_{0,2n}$ to $\cM…
In this article, we give a description of the closed cone of curves of the projective bundle $\mathbb{P}(E)$ over a smooth projective variety $X$. Using duality, we then calculate the nef cone of divisors in $\mathbb{P}(E)$ over some special surfaces $X$ and for some special bundles on $X$. As an application, we also calculate the Seshadri constants of semistable ample vector bundles with vanishing discriminant on some special ruled surfaces at special points.
We show that a moduli space of slope-stable sheaves over a K3 surface is an irreducible hyperkähler manifold if and only if its second Betti number is the sum of its Hodge numbers $h^{2,0}$, $h^{1,1}$ and $h^{0,2}$.
We determine the automorphism group of the Hilbert scheme of two points on a generic projective K3 surface of any polarization. We obtain in particular new examples of Hilbert schemes of points having non-natural non-symplectic automorphisms. The existence of these automorphisms depends on solutions of Pell's equation.
We study autoequivalence groups of the derived categories on smooth projective surfaces, and show a trichotomy of types according to the maximal dimension of Fourier--Mukai kernels for autoequivalences. This number is $2$, $3$ or $4$, and we also pose a conjecture on the description of autoequivalence groups if it is $2$, and prove it in some special cases.
An explicit projective embedding of the moduli space of marked cubic surfaces is given. This embedding is equivariant under the Weyl group of type E6. The image is defined by a system of linear and cubic equations. To express the embedding in a most symmetric way, the target would be 79-dimensional, however the image lies in a 9-dimensional linear subspace.
