We describe a family of locally conformal Kaehler metrics on class 1 Hopf surfaces H containing some recent metrics constructed by P. Gauduchon and L. ornea. We study some canonical foliations associated to these metrics, in particular a 2-dimensional foliation E that is shown to be independent of the metric. We elementary prove that E has compact leaves if and only if H is elliptic. In this case the leaves of E give explicitly the elliptic fibration of H, and the natural orbifold structure on the leaf space is illustrated.
We extend the Siu--Beauville theorem to a certain class of compact Kaehler--Weyl manifolds, proving that they fiber holomorphically over hyperbolic Riemannian surfaces whenever they satisfy the necessary topological hypotheses. As applications we obtain restrictions on the fundamental groups of such Kaehler--Weyl manifolds, and show that in certain cases they are in fact Kaehler.
A Hopf hypersurface in a (para-)Kaehler manifold is a real hypersurface for which one of the principal directions of the second fundamental form is the (para-)complex dual of the normal vector. We consider particular Hopf hypersurfaces in the space of oriented geodesics of a non-flat space form of dimension greater than 2. For spherical and hyperbolic space forms, the oriented geodesic space admits a canonical Kaehler-Einstein and para-Kaehler-Einstein structure, respectively, so that a natural notion of a Hopf hypersurface exists. The particular hypersurfaces considered are formed by the orie…
Here we study geodesics connecting two given points on odd-dimensional spheres respecting the Hopf fibration. This geodesic boundary value problem is completely solved in the case of 3-dimensional sphere and some partial results are obtained in the general case. The Carnot-Carathéodory distance is calculated. We also present some motivations related to quantum mechanics.
In this paper, we study minimal maps between euclidean spheres. The Hopf fibrations provide explicit examples of such minimal maps. Moreover, their corresponding graphs have second fundamental form of constant norm. We prove that a minimal submersion from $S^3$ to $S^2$ whose Gauss map satisfies a suitable pinching condition must be weakly conformal and with totally geodesic fibers. As a consequence, we obtain that an equivariant minimal submersion from $S^3$ to $S^2$ coincides with the Hopf fibration. Furthermore, we prove that a minimal map $f:S^3 \to S^2$ with constant singular values and c…
Heinz Hopf's famous fibrations of the 2n+1-sphere by great circles, the 4n+3-sphere by great 3-spheres, and the 15-sphere by great 7-spheres have a number of interesting properties. Besides providing the first examples of homotopically nontrivial maps from one sphere to another sphere of lower dimension, they all share two striking features: (1) Their fibers are parallel, in the sense that any two fibers are a constant distance apart, and (2) The fibrations are highly symmetric. For example, there is a fiber-preserving isometry of each total space which takes any given fiber to any other one. …
Sub-Riemannian structures on odd-dimensional spheres respecting the Hopf fibration naturally appear in quantum mechanics. We study the curvature maps for such a sub-Riemannian structure and express them using the Riemannian curvature tensor of the Fubini-Study metric of the complex projective space and the curvature form of the Hopf fibration. We also estimate the number of conjugate points of a sub-Riemannian extremal in terms of the bounds of the sectional curvature and the curvature form. It presents a typical example for the study of curvature maps and comparison theorms for a general cora…
We deal with Riemannian properties of the octonionic Hopf fibration S^{15}-->S^8, in terms of the structure given by its symmetry group Spin(9). In particular, we show that any vertical vector field has at least one zero, thus reproving the non-existence of S^1 subfibrations. We then discuss Spin(9)-structures from a conformal viewpoint and determine the structure of compact locally conformally parallel Spin(9)-manifolds. Eventually, we give a list of examples of locally conformally parallel Spin(9)-manifolds.
Let $X$ be a compact Kaehler manifold and $E\to X$ a principal $K$ bundle, where $K$ is a compact connected Lie group. Let ${\cal A}^{1,1}$ be the set of connections on $E$ whose curvature lies in $Ω^{1,1}(E\times_{Ad} {\frak k})$, where ${\frak k}$ is the Lie algebra of $K$. Endow $\frak k$ with a nondegenerate biinvariant bilinear pairing. This allows to identify $\{\frak k}\simeq{\frak k}^*$. Let $F$ be a Kaehler left $K$-manifold and suppose that there exists a moment map $μ$ for the action of $K$ on $F$. Let ${\cal S}=Γ(E\times_K F)$. In this paper we study the equation $$ΛF_A+μ(Φ)=c$$ fo…
We investigate isometric immersions of locally conformally Kaehler metrics into Hopf manifolds. In particular, we study Hopf-induced metrics on compact complex surfaces.
A fibration of a Riemannian manifold is fiberwise homogeneous if there are isometries of the manifold onto itself, taking any given fiber to any other one, and preserving fibers. Examples are fibrations of Euclidean n-space by parallel n-planes, and the Hopf fibrations of the round n-sphere by great n-spheres. In this paper, we describe all the fiberwise homogeneous fibrations of Euclidean and hyperbolic 3-space by geodesics. Our main result is that, up to fiber-preserving isometries, there is precisely a one-parameter family of such fibrations of Euclidean 3-space, and a two-parameter family …
In this paper, we describe a new surprising example of a fibration of the Clifford torus S3 x S3 in the 7-sphere by great 3-spheres, which is fiberwise homogeneous but whose fibers are not parallel to one another. In particular it is not part of a Hopf fibration. A fibration is fiberwise homogeneous when for any two fibers there is an isometry of the total space taking fibers to fibers and taking the first given fiber to the second one. We also describe in detail the geometry of this surprising fibration and how it differs from the Hopf fibration.
We give a general construction of extremal Kaehler metrics on the total space of certain holomorphic submersions, extending results of Dervan-Sektnan, Fine, and Hong. We consider submersions whose fibres admit a degeneration to Kaehler manifolds with constant scalar curvature, in a way that is compatible with the fibration structure. Thus we allow fibres that are K-semistable, rather than K-polystable; this is crucial to moduli theory. On these fibrations we phrase a partial differential equation whose solutions, called optimal symplectic connections, represent a canonical choice of a relative…
A hypercomplex manifold is a manifold equipped with a triple of complex structures satisfying the quaternionic relations. A holomorphic Lagrangian variety on a hypercomplex manifold with trivial canonical bundle is a holomorphic subvariety which is calibrated by a form associated with the holomorphic volume form; this notion is a generalization of the usual holomorphic Lagrangian subvarieties known in hyperkaehler geometry. An HKT (hyperkaehler with torsion) metric on a hypercomplex manifold is a metric determined by a local potential, in a similar way to the Kaehler metric. We prove that a ba…
We study the horizontal Laplacian $Δ^H$ associated to the Hopf fibration $S^3\to S^2$ with arbitrary Chern number $k$. We use representation theory to calculate the spectrum, describe the heat kernel and obtain the complete heat trace asymptotics of $Δ^H$. We express the Green functions for associated Poisson semigroups and obtain bounds for their contraction properties and Sobolev inequalities for $Δ^H$. The bounds and inequalities improve as $|k|$ increases.
In this article we develop a new approach to the problem of the stability of locally conformally Kähler structures (l.c.k structures) under small deformations of complex structures and deformations of flat line bundles. We show that under the certain cohomological condition the stability of l.c.k structures does hold. We apply our approach to Hopf manifolds and its generalizations to obtain the stability of l.c.k structures which do not have potential in general. We give an explicit description of the cohomological obstructions of the stability of l.c.k structures on Inoue surfaces with $b_2=0…
A locally conformally Kaehler (l.c.K.) manifold is a complex manifold admitting a Kaehler covering $\tilde M$, with each deck transformation acting by Kaehler homotheties. A compact l.c.K. manifold is Vaisman if it admits a holomorphic flow acting by non-trivial homotheties on $\tilde M$. We prove a structure theorem for compact Vaisman manifolds. Every compact Vaisman manifold M is fibered over a circle, the fibers are Sasakian, the fibration is locally trivial, and M is reconstructed as a Riemannian suspension from the Sasakian structure on the fibers and the monodromy automorphism induced b…
We study the sub-Laplacian of the $15$-dimensional unit sphere which is obtained by lifting with respect to the Hopf fibration the Laplacian of the octonionic projective space. We obtain in particular explicit formulas for its heat kernel and deduce an expression for the Green function of a related sub-Laplacian. As a byproduct we also obtain the spectrum of the sub-Laplacian, the small-time asymptotics of the heat kernel and explicitly compute the sub-Riemannian distance.
The main goal of this work is to study the sub-Laplacian of the unit sphere which is obtained by lifting with respect to the Hopf fibration the Laplacian of the quaternionic projective space. We obtain in particular explicit formulas for its heat kernel and deduce an expression for the Green function of the conformal sub-Laplacian and small-time asymptotics. As a byproduct of our study we also obtain several results related to the sub-Laplacian of a projected Hopf fibration.
It is shown that analytic conformal submersions of $S^3$ are given by intersections of (not necessary closed) complex surfaces with a quadratic real hyper-surface in $\mathbb{C}P^3.$ A new description of the space of circles in the 3-sphere in terms of a natural bilinear form on the tangent sphere bundle of $S^3$ is given. As an application it is shown that every conformal fibration of $S^3$ by circles is the Hopf fibration up to conformal transformations.
Inspired by a construction due to Hitchin, we produce strongly bihermitian metrics on certain Hopf complex surfaces, which integrate the locally conformally Kaehler metrics found by Gauduchon and Ornea. We also show that the Inoue complex surfaces with zero second Betti number do not admit bihermitian metrics. This completes the classification of the compact complex surfaces admitting strongly bihermitian metrics.
The Hopf fibration has inspired any number of geometric structures in physical systems, in particular in chiral liquid crystalline materials. Because the Hopf fibration lives on the three sphere, $\mathbb{S}^3$, some method of projection or distortion must be employed to realize textures in flat space. Here, we explore the geodesic-preserving gnomonic projection of the Hopf fibration, and show that this could be the basis for a new liquid crystalline texture with only splay and twist. We outline the structure and show that it is defined by the tangent vectors along the straight line rulings on…
Let $ 1 \rightarrow N \rightarrow G \rightarrow Q \rightarrow 1$ be an exact sequence of finitely presented groups where Q is infinite and not virtually cyclic, and is the fundamental group of some closed 3-manifold. If G is Kaehler, we show that Q is either the 3-dimensional Heisenberg group or the fundamental group of the Cartesian product of a closed oriented surface of positive genus and the circle. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof of a theorem of Dimca and Suciu by taking N to be the trivial group, If G is the fundamental group of a compact complex surface, we show that Q must be the…
Ancient solutions arise in the study of Ricci flow singularities. Motivated by the work of Fateev on 3-dimensional ancient solutions we construct high dimensional ancient solutions to Ricci flow on spheres and complex projective spaces as well as the twistor spaces over a compact quaternion-Kahler manifold. Differing from Fateev's examples most of our examples are non-collapsed. The construction of this paper, different from the ad hoc anastz of Fateev, is systematic, generalizing (as well as unifying) the previous constructions of Einstein metrics by Bourguignon-Karcher, Jensen, and Ziller in…
A locally conformally Kähler (LCK) manifold $M$ is one which is covered by a Kähler manifold $\tilde M$ with the deck transform group acting conformally on $\tilde M$. If $M$ admits a holomorphic flow, acting on $\tilde M$ conformally, it is called a Vaisman manifold. Neither the class of LCK manifolds nor that of Vaisman manifolds is stable under small deformations. We define a new class of LCK-manifolds, called LCK manifolds with potential, which is closed under small deformations. All Vaisman manifolds are LCK with potential. We show that an LCK-manifold with potential admits a covering whi…
Let $M$ be a hyperkaehler manifold, and $η$ a closed, positive (1,1)-form which is degenerate everywhere on $M$. We associate to $η$ a family of complex structures on $M$, called a degenerate twistor family, and parametrized by a complex line. When $η$ is a pullback of a Kaehler form under a Lagrangian fibration $L$, all the fibers of degenerate twistor family also admit a Lagrangian fibration, with the fibers isomorphic to that of $L$. Degenerate twistor families can be obtained by taking limits of twistor families, as one of the Kahler forms in the hyperkahler triple goes to $η$.
In this work, we study helix spacelike and timelike surfaces in the Lorentzian Berger sphere $\s_{\varepsilon}^3$, that is the three-dimensional sphere endowed with a $1$-parameter family of Lorentzian metrics, obtained by deforming the round metric on $\s^3$ along the fibers of the Hopf fibration $\s^3\to \s^2({1}/{2})$ by $-\varepsilon^2$. Our main result provides a characterization of the helix surfaces in $\s_{\varepsilon}^3$ using the symmetries of the ambient space and a general helix in $\s_{\varepsilon}^3$, with axis the infinitesimal generator of the Hopf fibers. Also, we construct so…
We consider the Anti-de Sitter space $\mathbb{H}^3_1$ equipped with Berger-like metrics, that deform the standard metric of $\mathbb{H}^3_1$ in the direction of the hyperbolic Hopf vector field. Helix surfaces are the ones forming a constant angle with such vector field. After proving that these surfaces have (any) constant Gaussian curvature, we achieve their explicit local description in terms of a one-parameter family of isometries of the space and some suitable curves. These curves turn out to be general helices, which meet at a constant angle the fibers of the hyperbolic Hopf fibration.
