In this paper we study the variability and rigidity of secondary characteristic classes which arise from flat connections on a manifold. Considering the connection as a Lie-algebra valued one-form, we study the characteristic map from Lie algebra cohomology to de Rham cohomology of the manifold, and prove that if the Leibniz cohomology of the Lie algebra vanishes, then all secondary characteristic classes are rigid. In the case of codimension one foliations (with trivial normal bundle), we show that a characteristic map from the Leibniz cohomology of formal vector fields to the de Rham cohomology of the manifold detects a one-parameter variation of the Godbillon-Vey class.
Recall that Leibniz cohomology groups are invariants of Lie algebras defined by J-L. Loday.
We prove vanishing results for the generalized Miller-Morita-Mumford classes of some smooth bundles whose fiber is a closed manifold that supports a nonpositively curved Riemannian metric. We also find, under some extra conditions, that the vertical tangent bundle is topologically rigid.
We show that any non-Kahler, almost Kahler 4-manifold for which both the Ricci and the Weyl curvatures have the same algebraic symmetries as they have for a Kahler metric is locally isometric to the (only) proper 3-symmetric 4-dimensional space described by O. Kowalski.
We show that if the structure algebra of a Riemannian foliation F on a closed manifold M is nilpotent, then the integral of the Álvarez class of (M,F) along every closed path is the exponential of an algebraic number. By this result and the continuity of the Álvarez class under deformations shown in arXiv:1009.1098v2, we prove that the Álvarez class and the geometrically tautness of Riemannian foliations on a closed manifold M are invariant under deformation, if the fundamental group of M has polynomial growth.
In this paper, we introduce six axioms for relative Bott-Chern secondary characteristic classes and prove the uniqueness and existence theorem for them. Such a work provides us a natural way to understand and hence to prove the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem.
We give a construction of cyclic cocycles representing the equivariant characteristic classes of equivariant bundles. Our formulas generalize Connes' Godbillon-Vey cyclic cocycle. An essential tool of our construction is Connes-Moscovici's theory of cyclic cohomology of Hopf algebras.
I use local differential geometric techniques to prove that the algebraic cycles in certain extremal homology classes in Hermitian symmetric spaces are either rigid (i.e., deformable only by ambient motions) or quasi-rigid (roughly speaking, foliated by rigid subvarieties in a nontrivial way). These rigidity results have a number of applications: First, they prove that many subvarieties in Grassmannians and other Hermitian symmetric spaces cannot be smoothed (i.e., are not homologous to a smooth subvariety). Second, they provide characterizations of holomorphic bundles over compact Kahler mani…
We establish several Witten type rigidity and vanishing theorems for twisted Toeplitz operators on odd dimensional manifolds. We obtain our results by combining the modular method, modular transgression and some careful analysis of odd Chern classes for cocycles in odd $K$-theory. Moreover we discover that in odd dimensions, the fundamental group of manifolds plays an important role in the rigidity.
In this note we clarify the relevance of ``connections up to homotopy'' to the theory of characteristic classes. We have already remarked \cite{Crai} that such connections up to homotopy can be used to compute the classical Chern characters. Here we present a slightly different argument for this, and then proceed with the discussion of the flat (secondary) characteristic classes. As an application, we clarify the relation between the two different approaches to characteristic classes of algebroids (and of Poisson manifolds in particular): we explain that the intrinsic characteristic classes ar…
Let G be a simple Lie group of real rank one, and S the ideal boundary of the corresponding symmetric space of noncompact type (H^n_R, H^n_C, H^n_H or H^2_O). We show the finiteness of the possible values of the secondary characteristic classes of transversely homogeneous foliations on a fixed manifold whose transverse structures are modeled on the G-action on S, except the case where G=SO(n+1,1) for even n. For this exceptional case, we construct examples of foliations on a manifold which break the finiteness and show a weaker form of the finiteness. These are generalizations of a finiteness …
A Riemannian metric on a manifold M induces a family of Riemannian metrics on the loop space LM depending on a Sobolev space parameter s. The connection and curvature forms of these metrics take values in pseudodifferential operators. We develop a theory of Wodzicki-Chern-Simons classes using the s=0, 1 connections and the Wodzicki residue. These classes distinguish the smooth homotopy type of some circle actions on M = S^2 x S^3, and imply that the fundamental group of Diff(M) is infinite.
We prove the Bloch conjecture : $ c_2(E) \in H^4_\cald (X,\bbz(2))$ is torsion for holomorphic rank two vector bundles $E$ with an integrable connection over a complex projective variety $X$. We prove also the rationality of the Chern-Simons invariant of compact arithmetic hyperbolic three-manifolds. We give a sharp higher-dimensional Milnor inequality for the volume regulator of all representations to $PSO(1,n)$ of fundamental groups of compact $n$-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds, announced in our earlier paper.
In this paper, we are going to show some rigidity results for complete open Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature. Without using the famous Cheeger-Gromoll splitting theorem we give a new proof to a rigidity result for complete manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature admitting a proper smooth map to $T^{n-1}\times \mathbf R$ with nonzero degree. Here we introduce a trick to obtain the compactness of limit hypersurface from locally graphical convergence. Based on the same idea we also establish an optimal $2$-systole inequality for several classes of complete Riemannian man…
We present several deformation and rigidity results within the classes of closed Riemannian manifolds which either are $2k$-Einstein (in the sense that their $2k$-Ricci tensor is constant) or have constant $2k$-Gauss-Bonnet curvature. The results hold for a family of manifolds containing all non-flat space forms and the main ingredients in the proofs are explicit formulae for the linearizations of the above invariants obtained by means of the formalism of double forms.
In this work, we establish new rigidity results for the Maslov class of Lagrangian submanifolds in large classes of closed and convex symplectic manifolds. Our main result establishes upper bounds for the minimal Maslov number of displaceable Lagrangian submanifolds which are product manifolds whose factors each admit a metric of negative sectional curvature. Such Lagrangian submanifolds exist in every symplectic manifold of dimension greater than six or equal to four. The proof utilizes the relations between closed geodesics on the Lagrangian, the periodic orbits of geometric Hamiltonian flow…
In this paper we define K-theoretic secondary invariants attached to a Lie groupoid $G$. The K-theory of $C^*_r(G_{ad}^0)$ (where $G_{ad}^0$ is the adiabatic deformation $G$ restricted to the interval $[0,1)$) is the receptacle for K-theoretic secondary invariants. We give a Lie groupoid version of construction given by Piazza and Schick in the setting of the Coarse Geometry. Our construction directly generalises to more involved geometrical situation, such as foliations, well encoded by a Lie groupoid. Along the way we tackle the problem of producing a wrong-way functoriality between adiabati…
In this paper we continue the study of positive scalar curvature (psc) metrics on a depth-1 Thom-Mather stratified space $M_Σ$ with singular stratum $βM$ (a closed manifold of positive codimension) and associated link equal to $L$, a smooth compact manifold. We briefly call such spaces manifolds with $L$-fibered singularities. Under suitable spin assumptions we give necessary index-theoretic conditions for the existence of wedge metrics of positive scalar curvature. Assuming in addition that $L$ is a simply connected homogeneous space of positive scalar curvature, $L=G/H$, with the semisimple …
The purpose of this paper is to both survey and offer some new results on the non-triviality of the characteristic classes of Riemannian foliations. We give examples where the primary Pontrjagin classes are all linearly independent. The independence of the secondary classes is also discussed, along with their total variation. Finally, we give a negative solution of a conjecture that the map of classifying spaces $\FRGq \to \FGq$ is trivial for codimension $q > 1$.
We give a definition of differentiable cohomology of a Lie group G (possibly infinite-dimensional) with coefficients in any abelian Lie group. This differentiable cohomology maps both to the cohomology of the group made discrete and to Lie algebra cohomology. We show that the secondary characteristic classes of Beilinson lead to differentiable cohomology classes with coefficients in C*. These may be viewed as an enrichment of the Chern-Simons differential forms. By transgression, classes in differentiable cohomology of a Lie group G lead to differentiable cohomology classes for gauge groups Ma…
For a local Lie group M we define odd order cohomology classes. The first class is an obstruction to globalizability of the local Lie group. The third class coincides with Godbillon-Vey class in a particular case. These classes are secondary as they emerge when curvature vanishes.
We extend R. Fernandes' construction of secondary characteristic classes of a Lie algebroid to the case of a base-preserving morphism between two Lie algebroids. Like in the case of a Lie algebroid, the simplest characteristic class of our construction coincides with the modular class of the morphism.
A rigidity result for a class of compact generalized quasi-Einstein manifolds with constant scalar curvature is obtained. Moreover, under some geometric assumptions, the rigidity for the noncompact case is also proved. Considering non constant scalar curvature, we characterize the generalized quasi-Einstein manifolds which are conformal to the Euclidean space and we show that there exist two classes of complete manifolds, which are obtained by considering potential functions and conformal factors either to be radial or invariant under the action of an (n-1)-dimensional translation group. Expli…
