Troels Jorgensen conjectured that the algebraic and geometric limits of an algebraically convergent sequence of isomorphic Kleinian groups agree if there are no new parabolics in the algebraic limit. We prove that this conjecture holds in 'most' cases. In particular, we show that it holds when the domain of discontinuity of the algebraic limit of such a sequence is non-empty. We further show, with the same assumptions, that the limit sets of the groups in the sequence converge to the limit set of the algebraic limit. As a corollary, we verify the conjecture for finitely generated Kleinian groups which are not (non-trivial) free products of surface groups and infinite cyclic groups.
Let $Γ$ be a nonelementary discrete subgroup of $\mathrm{Sp}(n,1)$. We show that if the trace skew-field of $Γ$ is commutative, then $Γ$ stabilizes a copy of complex hyperbolic subspace of quaternionic hyperbolic $n$-space.
We show that $Γ< \textbf{SU}(3,1)$ is a non-elementary complex hyperbolic Kleinian group in which $tr(γ) \in \R$ for all $γ\in Γ$ if and only if $Γ$ is conjugate to a subgroup of $\textbf{SO}(3,1)$ or $\textbf{SU}(1,1)\times\textbf{SU}(2)$.
We consider non-elementary Kleinian groups Γ, without invariant plane, generated by an elliptic and a hyperbolic element with their axes lying in one plane. We find presentations and a complete list of orbifolds uniformized by such Γ.
Let $Γ$ be a nonelementary discrete subgroup of SU(n,1) or Sp(n,1). We show that if the trace field of $Γ$ is contained in $\mathbb R$, $Γ$ preserves a totally geodesic submanifold of constant negative sectional curvature. Furthermore if $Γ$ is irreducible, $Γ$ is a Zariski dense irreducible discrete subgroup of SO(n,1) up to conjugation. This is an analog of a theorem of Maskit for general semisimple Lie groups of rank $1$.
Using the rings of Lipschitz and Hurwitz integers $\mathbb{H}(\mathbb{Z})$ and $\mathbb{H}ur(\mathbb{Z})$ in the quaternion division algebra $\mathbb{H}$, we define several Kleinian discrete subgroups of $PSL(2,\mathbb{H})$
We show that there exist infinitely many commensurability classes of finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds whose fundamental group contains a subgroup which is locally free but not free. The main technical tool is the fact that a collection of hyperbolic 3-manifolds of bounded volume contains infinitely many commensurability classes. The result then by an application of Thurston's hyperbolization theorem for Haken 3-manifolds.
Fixing a closed hyperbolic surface S, we define a moduli space AI(S) of unmarked hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to S. This 3-dimensional analogue of the moduli space M(S) of unmarked hyperbolic surfaces homeomorphic to S has bizarre local topology, possessing many points that are not closed. There is, however, a natural embedding of M(S) into AI(S) and a compactification of AI(S) such that this embedding extends to an embedding of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of M(S) into the compactification of AI(S).
We consider a compact orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with a compressible boundary. Suppose that we are given a sequence of geometrically finite hyperbolic metrics whose conformal boundary structures at infinity diverge to a projective lamination. We prove that if this limit projective lamination is doubly incompressible, then the sequence has compact closure in the deformation space. As a consequence we generalise Thurston's double limit theorem and solve his conjecture on convergence of function groups affirmatively.
The density conjecture of Bers, Sullivan and Thurston predicts that each complete hyperbolic 3-manifold M with finitely generated fundamental group is an algebraic limit of geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We prove that the conjecture obtains for each complete hyperbolic 3-manifold with no cusps and incompressible ends.
We characterize sequences of Kleinian surface groups with convergent subsequences in terms of the asymptotic behavior of the ending invariants of the associated hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Asymptotic behavior of end invariants in a convergent sequence predicts the parabolic locus of the algebraic limit as well as how the algebraic limit wraps within the geometric limit under the natural locally isometric covering map.
We give an alternative proof to Agol's classification of parabolic generating pairs of non-free Kleinian groups generated by two parabolic transformations. As an application, we give a complete characterisation of epimorphims between $2$-bridge knot groups and a complete characterisation of degree one maps between the exteriors of hyperbolic $2$-bridge links.
Let (X,d) be a tree (T) of hyperbolic metric spaces satisfying the quasi-isometrically embedded condition. Let $v$ be a vertex of $T$. Let $({X_v},d_v)$ denote the hyperbolic metric space corresponding to $v$. Then $i : X_v \rightarrow X$ extends continuously to a map $\hat{i} : \widehat{X_v} \rightarrow \widehat{X}$. This generalizes a Theorem of Cannon and Thurston. The techniques are used to give a new proof of a result of Minsky: Thurston's ending lamination conjecture for certain Kleinian groups. Applications to graphs of hyperbolic groups and local connectivity of limit sets of Kleinian …
For any closed surface $S$ of genus $g \geq 2$, we show that the deformation space of marked hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to $S$, $AH(S \times I)$, is not locally connected. This proves a conjecture of Bromberg who recently proved that the space of Kleinian punctured torus groups is not locally connected. Playing an essential role in our proof is a new version of the filling theorem that is based on the theory of cone-manifold deformations developed by Hodgson, Kerckhoff, and Bromberg.
In this paper we study kleinian groups of Schottky type whose limit set is a wild knot in the sense of Artin and Fox. We show that, if the ``original knot'' fibers over the circle then the wild knot $Λ$ also fibers over the circle. As a consequence, the universal covering of $\mathbb{S}^{3}-Λ$ is $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. We prove that the complement of a dynamically-defined fibered wild knot can not be a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold.
This is a survey of higher-dimensional Kleinian groups, i.e., discrete isometry groups of the hyperbolic n-space for n greater than 3. Our main emphasis is on the topological and geometric aspects of higher-dimensional Kleinian groups and their contrast with the discrete groups of isometry of the hyperbolic 3-space.
We prove that Kleinian groups whose limit sets are Cantor sets of Hausdorff dimension $<1$ are free. On the other hand we construct for any $ε>0$ examples of non-free purely hyperbolic Kleinian groups whose limit set is a Cantor set of Hausdorff dimension $<1+ε$.
In this paper, we classify completely hyperbolic 3-manifolds corresponding to geometric limits of Kleinian surface groups isomorphic to $π_1(S)$ for a finite-type hyperbolic surface $S$. In the first of the three main theorems, we construct bi-Lipschitz model manifolds for such hyperbolic 3-manifolds, which have a structure called brick decomposition and are embedded in $S \times (0,1)$. In the second theorem, we show that conversely, any such model manifold admitting a brick decomposition with reasonable conditions is bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic to a hyperbolic manifold corresponding to some ge…
In this paper we extend Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn surgery theorem to a class of geometrically infinite hyperbolic 3-manifolds. As an application we prove a modest density theorem for Kleinian groups. We also discuss hyperbolic Dehn surgery on geometrically finite hypebolic cone-manifolds.
Let M^3 be a compact, oriented, irreducible, and boundary incompressible 3-manifold. Assume that its fundamental group is without rank two abelian subgroups and its boundary is non-empty. We will show that every homomorphism from pi_1(M) to PSL(2,C) which is not `boundary elementary' is induced by a possibly branched complex projective structure on the boundary of a hyperbolic manifold homeomorphic to M.
Any action of a group $Γ$ on $\mathbb H^3$ by isometries yields a class in degree three bounded cohomology by pulling back the volume cocycle to $Γ$. We prove that the bounded cohomology of finitely generated Kleinian groups without parabolic elements distinguishes the asymptotic geometry of geometrically infinite ends of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. That is, if two homotopy equivalent hyperbolic manifolds with infinite volume and without parabolic cusps have different geometrically infinite end invariants, then they define a $2$ dimensional subspace of bounded cohomology. Our techniques apply to…
Let M be a non-elementary convex cocompact hyperbolic 3 manifold and delta the critical exponent of its fundamental group. We prove that a one-dimensional unipotent flow for the frame bundle of M is ergodic for the Burger-Roblin measure provided that delta>1.
We prove that the rank problem is decidable in the class of torsion-free word-hyperbolic Kleinian groups. We also show that every group in this class has only finitely many Nielsen equivalence classes of generating sets of a given cardinality.
We review the theory of splittings of hyperbolic groups, as determined by the topology of the boundary. We give explicit examples of certain phenomena and then use this to describe limit sets of Kleinian groups up to homeomorphism.
We consider a finitely generated torsion free Kleinian group $H$ and a random walk on $H$ with respect to a symmetric nondegenerate probability measure $μ$ with finite support. When $H$ is geometrically infinite without parabolics or when $H$ is Gromov hyperbolic with parabolics, we prove that the Patterson-Sullivan measure is singular with respect to the harmonic measure coming from $μ$.
We prove an effective version of a theorem relating curve complex distance to electric distance in hyperbolic 3-manifolds, up to errors that are polynomial in the complexity of the underlying surface. We use this to give an effective proof of a result regarding maps between curve complexes of surfaces induced by finite covers. As applications, we effectively relate the electric circumference of a fibered manifold to the curve complex translation length of its monodromy, and we give quantitative bounds on virtual specialness for cube complexes dual to curves on surfaces.
In the paper `Automorphic functions for a Whitehead-complement group', [Osaka J Math 43 (2006) 63-77] Matsumoto, Nishi and Yoshida constructed automorphic functions on real 3-dimensional hyperbolic space for a Kleinian group called the Whitehead-link-complement group. For a Kleinian group (of the first kind), no automorphic function/form has been studied before. In this note, their motivation is presented with a historical background.
Let $M = H^3/Γ$ be a hyperbolic 3-manifold, where $Γ$ is a non-elementary Kleinian group. It is shown that the length spectrum of $M$ is of unbounded multiplicity.
Classical Kleinian groups are discrete subgroups of isometries of H n. The well-known theory of Kleinian groups starts with the definition of their associated limit set in the boundary of H n , and includes the geometric properties of the quotient hyperbolic space. This approach, naively applied, fails in the Lorentzian analogue anti-de Sitter space: discrete subgroups do not act properly discontinuously, and in many cases the set of accumulation points of orbits at the conformal boundary at infinity depends on the orbit. In this survey, we point out a way to extend this classical theory by in…
Following the previous work of Nikulin and Agol, Belolipetsky, Storm, and Whyte it is known that there exist only finitely many (totally real) number fields that can serve as fields of definition of arithmetic hyperbolic reflection groups. We prove a new bound on the degree $n_k$ of these fields in dimension 3: $n_k$ does not exceed 9. Combined with previous results of Maclachlan and Nikulin, this leads to a new bound $n_k \le 25$ which is valid for all dimensions. We also obtain upper bounds for the discriminants of these fields and give some heuristic results which may be useful for the clas…
In this article we survey and describe various aspects of the geometry and arithmetic of Kleinian groups - discrete nonelementary groups of isometries of hyperbolic $3$-space. In particular we make a detailed study of two-generator groups and discuss the classification of the arithmetic generalised triangle groups (and their near relatives). This work is mainly based around my collaborations over the last two decades with Fred Gehring and Colin Maclachlan, both of whom passed away in 2012. There are many others involved as well. Over the last few decades the theory of Kleinian groups has flour…
We prove that if the fundamental group of an orientable finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold has finite index in the reflection group of a right-angled ideal polyhedra in $\mathbb{H}^3$ then it has a co-final tower of finite sheeted covers with positive rank gradient. The manifolds we provide are also known to have co-final towers of covers with zero rank gradient.
We give the first part of a proof of Thurston's Ending Lamination conjecture. In this part we show how to construct from the end invariants of a Kleinian surface group a ``Lipschitz model'' for the thick part of the corresponding hyperbolic manifold. This enables us to describe the topological structure of the thick part, and to give a-priori geometric bounds.
We show that up to commensurability there are only finitely many cocompact arithmetic Kleinian groups generated by rotations. This implies, in particular, that there exist only finitely many conjugacy classes of cocompact two generated arithmetic Kleinian groups. The proof of the main result is based on a generalized Gromov--Guth inequality and bounds for the hyperbolic and tube volumes of the quotient orbifolds.
Thurston's Ending Lamination Conjecture states that a hyperbolic 3-manifold N with finitely generated fundamental group is uniquely determined by its topological type and its end invariants. In this paper we prove this conjecture for Kleinian surface groups; the general case when N has incompressible ends relative to its cusps follows readily. The main ingredient is the establishment of a uniformly bilipschitz model for a Kleinian surface group. The first half of the proof appeared in math.GT/0302208, and a subsequent paper will establish the Ending Lamination Conjecture in general.
We study the closed group of homeomorphisms of the boundary of real hyperbolic space generated by a cocompact Kleinian group $G_1$ and a quasiconformal conjugate $h^{-1}G_2 h$ of a cocompact group $G_2$. We show that if the conjugacy $h$ is not conformal then this group contains a non-trivial one parameter subgroup. This leads to rigidity results; for example, Mostow rigidity is an immediate consequence. We are also able to prove a relative version of Mostow rigidity, called pattern rigidity. For a cocompact group $G$, by a $G$-invariant pattern we mean a $G$-invariant collection of closed pro…
We show that a Kleinian surface group, or hyperbolic 3-manifold with a cusp-preserving homotopy-equivalence to a surface, has bounded geometry if and only if there is an upper bound on an associated collection of coefficients that depend only on its end invariants. Bounded geometry is a positive lower bound on the lengths of closed geodesics. When the surface is a once-punctured torus, the coefficients coincide with the continued fraction coefficients associated to the ending laminations. Applications include an improvement to the bounded geometry versions of Thurston's ending lamination conje…
We consider the space of all quasifuchsian metrics on the product of a surface with the real line. We show that, in a neighborhood of the submanifold consisting of fuchsian metrics, every non-fuchsian metric is completely determined by the bending data of its convex core.
We examine residual properties of word-hyperbolic groups, adapting a method introduced by Darren Long to study the residual properties of Kleinian groups.
We show that hyperbolic 3-manifolds with finitely generated fundamental group are tame, that is the ends are products. We actually work in slightly greater generality with pinched negatively curved manifolds with hyperbolic cusps. This answers a conjecture of Marden and implies the Ahlfors measure conjecture. Applications are given to other questions about Kleinian groups and 3-manifolds.
We introduce the notion of the visual core of a hyperbolic 3-manifold N and explore its basic properties. The visual core can be thought of as a harmonic analysis analogue of the convex core. We investigate circumstances in which the visual core of a cover N' of N embeds under the covering map from N' to N. We apply this analysis to convergent sequences of Kleinian groups, in order to understand when the visual core of the algebraic limit manifold embeds in the geometric limit manifold. We close with a discussion of the behavior of the visual core under Klein-Maskit combination.
We show that some laminar group which has an invariant veering pair of laminations is a hyperbolic 3-orbifold group. On the way, we show that from a veering pair of laminations, one can construct a loom space (in the sense of Schleimer-Segerman) as a quotient. Our approach does not assume the existence of any 3-manifold to begin with so this is a geometrization-type result, and supersedes some of the results regarding the relation among veering triangulations, pseudo-Anosov flows, taut foliations in the literature.
Let N be a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold that is an algebraic limit of geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We show N is homeomorphic to the interior of a compact 3-manifold, or tame, if one of the following conditions holds: (1) N has non-empty conformal boundary, (2) N is not homotopy equivalent to a compression body, or (3) N is a strong limit of geometrically finite manifolds. The first case proves Ahlfors' measure conjecture for Kleinian groups in the closure of the geometrically finite locus: given any algebraic limit G of geometrically finite Kleinian groups, the limit set of G…
These revised lecture notes are an expository account of part of the proof of Thurston's Ending Lamination Conjecture for Kleinian surface groups, which states that such groups are uniquely determined by invariants that describe the asymptotic structure of the ends of their quotient manifolds.
Closed hyperbolic manifolds are proven to minimize volume over all Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded below by -1 in the same bilipschitz class. As a corollary compact convex cores with totally geodesic boundary are proven to minimize volume over all hyperbolic manifolds in the same bilipschitz class. Also, closed hyperbolic manifolds minimize volume over all hyperbolic cone manifolds in the same bilipschitz class with cone angles not greater than 2pi. The proof uses techniques developed by Besson-Courtois-Gallot. In 3 dimensions, this result provides a partial solution to a conjecture i…
We show that any finitely generated non-elementary Kleinian group has a co-final family of finite index normal subgroups with respect to which it has Property $τ$. As a consequence, any closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a co-final family of finite index normal subgroups for which the infimal Heegaard gradient is positive.
We prove that every finitely presentable group G arises as the fundamental group of an orientable 3-complex obtained from a hyperbolic link complement, by coning each boundary torus of the link exterior to a distinct point. We define the closed-link-genus, clg(G), of any finitely presentable group G, which completely characterizes fundamental groups of closed orientable 3-manifolds: clg(G)=0 if and only if G is the fundamental group of a closed orientable 3-manifold. Moreover clg(G) gives an upper bound for the concept `genus(G)' of genus defined earlier by Aitchison and Reeves, and in turn is…
We present recent results on counting and distribution of circles in a given circle packing invariant under a geometrically finite Kleinian group and discuss how the dynamics of flows on geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$ manifolds are related. Our results apply to Apollonian circle packings, Sierpinski curves, Schottky dances, etc.
Elements $f$ of finite order in the isometry group of hyperbolic three-space $\IH^3$ have a hyperbolic line as a fixed point set, this line is the axis of $f$. The possible hyperbolic distances between axes of elements of order $p$ and $q$, not both two, among {\em all} discrete subgroups $Γ$ of $Isom^+(\IH^3)$ has an initial discrete spectrum \[ 0 =δ_0< δ_1 < δ_2 < \ldots <δ_\infty,\] each value taken with finite multiplicity, and above $δ_\infty$ this spectrum of possible distances is continuous. The value $δ_\infty$ is the smallest number with the property that for each $λ<1$ there are only…
