We show that hyperbolic 3-manifolds with finitely generated fundamental group are tame, that is the ends are products. We actually work in slightly greater generality with pinched negatively curved manifolds with hyperbolic cusps. This answers a conjecture of Marden and implies the Ahlfors measure conjecture. Applications are given to other questions about Kleinian groups and 3-manifolds.
We supply a proof of the fact that a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with finitely generated fundamental group and with no parabolics is topologically tame. This proves the Marden's conjecture. Our approach is to form an exhaustion $M_i$ of $M$ and modify the boundary to make them 2-convex. We use the induced path-metric, which makes the submanifold $M_i$ $δ$-hyperbolic and with Margulis constants independent of $i$. By taking the convex hull in the cover of $M_i$ corresponding the core, we show that there exists an exiting sequence of surfaces $Σ_i$. We drill out the covers of $M_i$ by a core $C$ a…
Using PL-methods, we prove the Marden's conjecture that a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with finitely generated fundamental group and with no parabolics are topologically tame. Our approach is to form an exhaustion $M_i$ of $M$ and modify the boundary to make them 2-convex. We use the induced path-metric, which makes the submanifold $M_i$ negatively curved and with Margulis constant independent of $i$. By taking the convex hull in the cover of $M_i$ corresponding to the core, we show that there exists an exiting sequence of surfaces $Σ_i$. Some of the ideas follow those of Agol. We drill out the c…
Marden's Tameness Conjecture predicts that every hyperbolic 3-manifold with finitely generated fundamental group is homeomorphic to the interior of a compact 3-manifold. It was recently established by Agol and Calegari-Gabai. We will survey the history of work on this conjecture and discuss its many applications.
Let N be a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold that is an algebraic limit of geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We show N is homeomorphic to the interior of a compact 3-manifold, or tame, if one of the following conditions holds: (1) N has non-empty conformal boundary, (2) N is not homotopy equivalent to a compression body, or (3) N is a strong limit of geometrically finite manifolds. The first case proves Ahlfors' measure conjecture for Kleinian groups in the closure of the geometrically finite locus: given any algebraic limit G of geometrically finite Kleinian groups, the limit set of G…
Let $\mathbf{E}$ be a flat Lorentzian space of signature $(2, 1)$. A Margulis space-time is a noncompact complete flat Lorentzian $3$-manifold $\mathbf{E}/Γ$ with a free holonomy group $Γ$ of rank $\mathbf{g}, \mathbf{g} \geq 2$. We consider the case when $Γ$ contains a parabolic element. We obtain a characterization of proper $Γ$-actions in terms of Margulis and Drumm-Charette invariants. We show that $\mathbf{E}/Γ$ is homeomorphic to the interior of a compact handlebody of genus $\mathbf{g}$ generalizing our earlier result. Also, we obtain a bordification of the Margulis space-time with para…
We present a short elementary proof of an existence theorem of certain CAT(-1)-surfaces in open hyperbolic 3-manifolds. The main construction lemma in Calegari and Gabai's proof of Marden's Tameness Conjecture can be replaced by an applicable version of our theorem.
We show that Margulis spacetimes without parabolic holonomy are topologically tame. A Margulis spacetime is the quotient of the $3$-dimensional Minkowski space by a free proper isometric action of the free group of rank $\geq 2$. We will use our particular point of view that the Margulis spacetime is a manifold-with-boundary with an $\mathbb{R} P^3$-structure in an essential way. The basic tools are a bordification by a closed $\mathbb{R} P^2$-manifold with free holonomy group, and the work of Goldman, Labourie, and Margulis on geodesics in the Margulis spacetimes and $3$-manifold topology.
We continue our study of ends of non-compact manifolds, with a focus on the inward tameness condition. For manifolds with compact boundary, inward tameness, has significant implications. For example, such manifolds have stable homology at infinity in all dimensions. We show that these manifolds have 'almost perfectly semistable' fundamental group at each end. That observation leads to further analysis of group theoretic conditions at infinity, and to the notion of a 'near pseudo-collar' structure. We obtain a complete characterization of n-manifolds (n>5) admitting such a structure, thereby ge…
We exhibit some finite-volume cusped hyperbolic 5-manifolds that fiber over the circle. These include the smallest hyperbolic 5-manifold known, discovered by Ratcliffe and Tschantz. As a consequence, we build a finite type subgroup of a hyperbolic group that is not hyperbolic.
In this paper we use the G-spin theorem to show that the Davis hyperbolic 4-manifold admits harmonic spinors. This is the first example of a closed hyperbolic 4-manifold that admits harmonic spinors. We also explicitly describe the Spinor bundle of a spin hyperbolic 2- or 4-manifold and show how to calculated the subtle sign terms in the G-spin theorem for an isometry, with isolated fixed points, of a closed spin hyperbolic 2- or 4-manifold.
Let W be a compact hyperbolic n-manifold with totally geodesic boundary. We prove that if n>3 then the holonomy representation of pi_1 (W) into the isometry group of hyperbolic n-space is infinitesimally rigid.
In this paper we show that every three-dimensional closed hyperbolic manifold admits no locally geometric $1$-parameter family of closed minimal surfaces.
This is a short survey on finite-volume hyperbolic four-manifolds. We describe some general theorems and focus on the concrete examples that we found in the literature. The paper contains no new result.
Motivated by classical theorems on minimal surface theory in compact hyperbolic three-manifolds, we investigate the questions of existence and deformations for least area minimal surfaces in complete noncompact hyperbolic three-manifold of finite volume. We prove any closed immersed incompressible surface can be deformed to a closed immersed least area surface within its homotopy class in any cusped hyperbolic three-manifold. Our techniques highlight how special structures of these cusped hyperbolic three-manifolds prevent any least area minimal surface going too deep into the cusped region.
In this paper, we show the existence of smoothly embedded closed minimal surfaces in infinite volume hyperbolic $3$-manifolds except some special cases.
We introduce a new technique for finding CAT(-1) surfaces in hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We use this to show that a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold with finitely generated fundamental group is geometrically and topologically tame.
We give examples of harmonic maps between negatively curved manifolds with special properties. These negatively curved manifolds do not have the homotopy type of a locally symmetric space.
In this survey, we discuss four classes of identities due principally to Basmajian, McShane, Bridgeman-Kahn and Luo-Tan on hyperbolic manifolds and provide a unified approach for proving them. We also elucidate on the connections between the various identities.
We study geometry, topology and deformation spaces of noncompact complex hyperbolic manifolds (geometrically finite, with variable negative curvature), whose properties make them surprisingly different from real hyperbolic manifolds with constant negative curvature. This study uses an interaction between Kähler geometry of the complex hyperbolic space and the contact structure at its infinity (the one-point compactification of the Heisenberg group), in particular an established structural theorem for discrete group actions on nilpotent Lie groups.
This paper determines which orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds contain simple closed geodesics. The Fuchsian group corresponding to the thrice-punctured sphere generates the only example of a complete non-elementary orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold that does not contain a simple closed geodesic. We do not assume that the manifold is geometrically finite or that it has finitely generated fundamental group.
A 4-manifold is constructed with some curious metric properties; or maybe it is many 4-manifolds masquerading as one, which would explain why it looks curious. Anyway, knots in the 3-sphere with complete finite volume hyperbolic metrics on their complements play a role in this story.
Given a geometrically finite hyperbolic cone-manifold, with the cone singularity sufficiently short, we construct a one parameter family of cone-manifolds decreasing the cone angle to zero. We also control the geometry of this one parameter family via the Schwarzian derivative of the projective boundary and the length of closed geodesics.
We prove a partial generalization of Bonahon's tameness result to surfaces inside irreducible 3-manifolds with hyperbolic fundamental group. Bonahon's result states that geometrically infinite ends of freely indecomposable hyperbolic 3-manifolds are simply degenerate. It is easy to see that a geometrically infinite end gives rise to a sequence of curves on the corresponding surface whose geodesic representatives are not contained in any compact set. The main step in his proof is showing that one may assume that these curves are simple on the surface. In this paper, we generalize the main step …
We construct a locally hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ such that $π_ 1(M)$ has no divisible subgroups. We then show that $M$ is not homotopy equivalent to any complete hyperbolic manifold.
We prove that any arithmetic hyperbolic $n$-manifold of simplest type can either be geodesically embedded into an arithmetic hyperbolic $(n+1)$-manifold or its universal $\mathrm{mod}~2$ Abelian cover can.
In this paper we study existence and lack thereof of closed embedded orientable co-dimension one totally geodesic submanifolds of minimal volume cusped orientable hyperbolic manifolds.
In this article, we prove that the commensurability class of a closed, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifold is determined by the surface subgroups of its fundamental group. Moreover, we prove that there can be only finitely many closed, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifolds that have the same set of surfaces.
We relate small 1-form Laplacian eigenvalues to relative cycle complexity on closed hyperbolic manifolds: small eigenvalues correspond to closed geodesics no multiple of which bounds a surface of small genus. We describe potential applications of this equivalence principle toward proving optimal torsion homology growth in families of hyperbolic 3-manifolds Benjamini-Schramm converging to $\mathbb{H}^3.$
We construct a locally hyperbolic 3-manifold $M_\infty$ such that $π_ 1(M_\infty)$ has no divisible subgroup. We then show that $M_\infty$ is not homeomorphic to any complete hyperbolic manifold. This answers a question of Agol [DHM06,Mar07].
This paper is the second in a series whose goal is to understand the structure of low-volume complete orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Using Mom technology, we prove that any one-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold with volume <= 2.848 can be obtained by a Dehn filling on one of 21 cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We also show how this result can be used to construct a complete list of all one-cusped hyperbolic three-manifolds with volume <= 2.848 and all closed hyperbolic three-manifolds with volume <= 0.943. In particular, the Weeks manifold is the unique smallest volume closed orientable hyperboli…
In this paper, we describe all the hyperbolic 24-cell 4-manifolds with exactly one cusp. There are four of these manifolds up to isometry. These manifolds are the first examples of one-cusped hyperbolic 4-manifolds of minimum volume.
A homotopy equivalence between a hyperbolic 3-manifold and a closed irreducible 3-manifold is homotopic to a homeomorphsim provided the hyperbolic manifold satisfies a purely geometric condition. There are no known examples of hyperbolic 3-manifolds which do not satisfy this condition.
In this paper we extend Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn surgery theorem to a class of geometrically infinite hyperbolic 3-manifolds. As an application we prove a modest density theorem for Kleinian groups. We also discuss hyperbolic Dehn surgery on geometrically finite hypebolic cone-manifolds.
We give a bounded runtime solution to the homeomorphism problem for closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. This is an algorithm which, given two triangulations of hyperbolic 3-manifolds by at most $t$ tetrahedra, decides if they represent the same hyperbolic 3-manifold with runtime bounded by \[ 2^{2^{t^{O(t)}}}.\] We do this by first finding a hyperbolic structure on each manifold given as a geometric triangulation and then comparing the two as geometric manifolds.
We show that the hyperbolic structure on a closed, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifold can be constructed from a solution to the hyperbolic gluing equations using any triangulation with essential edges. The key ingredients in the proof are Thurston's spinning construction and a volume rigidity result attributed by Dunfield to Thurston, Gromov and Goldman. As an application, we show that this gives a new algorithm to detect hyperbolic structures on closed 3-manifolds.
We classify the complete hyperbolic 3-manifolds admitting a maximal cusp of volume at most 2.62. We use this to show that the figure-8 knot complement is the unique 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold with nine or more non-hyperbolic fillings; to show that the figure-8 knot complement and its sister are the unique hyperbolic 3-manifolds with minimal volume maximal cusps; and to extend results on determining low volume closed and cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
We show that an immersed thrice-punctured sphere in a cusped orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold is either embedded or has a single clasp in a manifold obtained by hyperbolic Dehn filling on a cusp of the Whitehead link complement.
This paper introduces a rigorous computer-assisted procedure for analyzing hyperbolic 3-manifolds. This technique is used to complete the proof of several long-standing rigidity conjectures in 3-manifold theory as well as to provide a new lower bound for the volume of a closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold. We prove the following result: \it\noindent Let $N$ be a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold. Then \begin{enumerate} \item[(1)] If $f\colon M \to N$ is a homotopy equivalence where $M$ is a closed irreducible 3-manifold, then $f$ is homotopic to a homeomorphism. \item[(2)] If $f,g\colon M\to N$…
We show the manifolds at infinity of the complex hyperbolic triangle groups $Δ_{3,4,4;\infty}$ and $Δ_{3,4,6;\infty}$,are one-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds $m038$ and $s090$ in the Snappy Census respectively. That is,these two manifolds admit spherical CR uniformizations. Moreover, these two hyperbolic 3-manifolds above can be obtained by Dehn surgeries on the first cusp of the two-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold $m295$ in the Snappy Census with slopes $2$ and $4$ respectively. In general, the main result in this paper allow us to conjecture that the manifold at infinity of the complex hyperbolic t…
We establish two-sided bounds for the complexity of two infinite series of closed orientable 3-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds, the Lobell manifolds and the Fibonacci manifolds.
In a recent paper Hodgson and Kerckhoff prove a local rigidity theorem for finite volume, three dimensional hyperbolic cone-manifolds. In this paper we extend this result to geometrically finite cone-manifolds. Our methods also give a new proof of a local version of the classical rigidity theorem for geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
In this paper we continue an earlier study of ends non-compact manifolds. The over-arching goal is to investigate and obtain generalizations of Siebenmann's famous collaring theorem that may be applied to manifolds having non-stable fundamental group systems at infinity. In this paper we show that, for manifolds with compact boundary, the condition of inward tameness has substatial implications for the algebraic topology at infinity. In particular, every inward tame manifold with compact boundary has stable homology (in all dimensions) and semistable fundamental group at each of its ends. In c…
We show the existence of hyperbolic 4-manifolds with vanishing Seiberg-Witten invariants, addressing a conjecture of Claude LeBrun. This is achieved by showing, using results in geometric and arithmetic group theory, that certain hyperbolic 4-manifolds contain L-spaces as hypersurfaces.
We prove existence of thick geodesic triangulations of hyperbolic 3-manifolds and use this to prove existence of universal bounds on the principal curvatures of surfaces embedded in hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
We show that every plumbing of disc bundles over surfaces whose genera satisfy a simple inequality may be embedded as a convex submanifold in some closed hyperbolic four-manifold. In particular its interior has a geometrically finite hyperbolic structure that covers a closed hyperbolic four-manifold.
By gluing together the sides of eight copies of an all-right angled hyperbolic 6-dimensional polytope, two orientable hyperbolic 6-manifolds with Euler characteristic -1 are constructed. They are the first known examples of orientable hyperbolic 6-manifolds having the smallest possible volume.
We discuss two families of closed orientable three-dimensional manifolds which arise as cyclic generalizations of two hyperbolic icosahedral manifolds listed by Everitt. Everitt's manifolds are cyclic coverings of the lens space $L_{3,1}$ branched over some 2-component links. We present results on covering properties, fundamental groups, and hyperbolic volumes of the manifolds belonging to these families.
This paper contains a purely topological theorem and a geometric application. The topological theorem states that if M is a simple closed orientable 3-manifold such that π_1(M) contains a genus g surface group and H_1(M;Z/2Z) has rank at least 4g-1 then M contains a closed incompressible surface of genus at most g. This result should be viewed as an analogue of Dehn's Lemma for π_1-injective singular surfaces. The geometric application states that if M is a closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with volume less than 3.08 then the rank of H_1(M;Z/2Z) is at most 6. The proof of the geometric t…
We show that every closed, virtually fibered hyperbolic 3-manifold contains immersed, quasi-Fuchsian surfaces with convex cores of arbitrarily large thickness.
