We show that an immersed thrice-punctured sphere in a cusped orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold is either embedded or has a single clasp in a manifold obtained by hyperbolic Dehn filling on a cusp of the Whitehead link complement.
For any oriented cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$, we study its $(R,ε)$-panted cobordism group, which is the abelian group generated by $(R,ε)$-good curves in $M$ modulo the oriented boundaries of $(R,ε)$-good pants. In particular, we prove that for sufficiently small $ε>0$ and sufficiently large $R>0$, some modified version of the $(R,ε)$-panted cobordism group of $M$ is isomorphic to $H_1(\text{SO}(M);\mathbb{Z})$.
We provide analogues for non-orientable surfaces with or without boundary or punctures of several basic theorems in the setting of the Thurston theory of surfaces which were developed so far only in the case of orientable surfaces. Namely, we provide natural analogues for non-orientable surfaces of the Fenchel-Nielsen theorem on the parametrization of the Teichmüller space of the surface, the Dehn-Thurston theorem on the parametrization of measured foliations in the surface, and the Hatcher-Thurston theorem, which gives a complete minimal set of moves between pair of pants decompositions of th…
We present a construction of sequences of closed hyperbolic surfaces that have long systoles which form pants decompositions of these surfaces. The length of the systoles of these surfaces grows logarithmically as a function of their genus.
Suppose that $M$ is a hyperbolic surface of genus $g$ and with $n$ cusps. Then we can find a pants decomposition of $M$ composed of simple closed geodesics so that each curve is contained in a ball of diameter at most $C\sqrt{g + n}$, where $C$ is a universal constant.
We construct a quasiconformally homogeneous hyperbolic Riemann surface-other than the hyperbolic plane-that does not admit a bounded pants decomposition. Also, given a connected orientable topological surface of infinite type with compact boundary components, we construct a complete hyperbolic metric on the surface that has bounded geometry but does not admit a bounded pants decomposition.
Exploiting a relationship between closed geodesics on a generic closed hyperbolic surface S and a certain unipotent flow on the product space T_1(S) x T_1(S), we obtain a local asymptotic equidistribution result for long closed geodesics on S. Applications include asymptotic estimates for the number of pants immersions into S satisfying various geometric constraints. Also we show that two uniformly random closed geodesics gamma_1, gamma_2 of length within epsilon of L have a high probability of partially bounding an immersed 4-holed sphere whose other boundary components also have length withi…
We show that any immersion, which is not a covering of an embedded 2-orbifold, of a totally geodesic hyperbolic turnover in a complete orientable hyperbolic 3-orbifold is contained in a hyperbolic 3-suborbifold with totally geodesic boundary, called the "turnover core,'' whose volume is bounded from above by a function depending only on the area of the given turnover. Furthermore, we show that, for a given type of turnover, there are only finitely many possibilities for the turnover core. As a corollary, if the volume of a complete orientable hyperbolic 3-orbifold is at least 2πand if the fund…
We modify an approach of Johnson to define the distance of a bridge splitting of a knot in a 3-manifold using the dual curve complex and pants complex of the bridge surface. This distance can be used to determine a complexity, which becomes constant after a sufficient number of stabilizations and perturbations, yielding an invariant of the manifold-knot pair. We also give evidence toward the relationship between the pants distance of a bridge splitting and the hyperbolic volume of the exterior of a knot.
Our goal is to show, in two different contexts, that "random" surfaces have large pants decompositions. First we show that there are hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$ for which any pants decomposition requires curves of total length at least $g^{7/6 - ε}$. Moreover, we prove that this bound holds for most metrics in the moduli space of hyperbolic metrics equipped with the Weil-Petersson volume form. We then consider surfaces obtained by randomly gluing euclidean triangles (with unit side length) together and show that these surfaces have the same property.
The paper contains a new proof that a complete, non-compact hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$ with finite volume contains an immersed, closed, quasi-Fuchsian surface.
Among other things, we prove the following two topologcal statements about closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. First, every rational second homology class of a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a positve integral multiple represented by an oriented connected closed $π_1$-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. Second, every rationally null-homologous, $π_1$-injectively immersed oriented closed 1-submanifold in a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has an equidegree finite cover which bounds an oriented compact $π_1$-injective immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. In part, we exploit techniques develo…
We count the number of conjugacy classes of maximal, genus g, surface subroups in hyperbolic 3-manifold groups. For any closed hyperbolic 3-manifold, we show that there is an upper bound on this number which grows factorially with g. We also give a class of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds for which there is a lower bound of the same type.
We investigate the terms arising in an identity for hyperbolic surfaces proved by Luo and Tan, namely showing that they vary monotonically in terms of lengths and that they verify certain convexity properties. Using these properties, we deduce two results. As a first application, we show how to deduce a theorem of Thurston which states, in particular for closed hyperbolic surfaces, that if a simple length spectrum "dominates" another, then in fact the two surfaces are isometric. As a second application, we show how to find upper bounds on the number of pairs of pants of bounded length that onl…
We show that every closed, virtually fibered hyperbolic 3-manifold contains immersed, quasi-Fuchsian surfaces with convex cores of arbitrarily large thickness.
This paper presents some finiteness results for the number of boundary slopes of immersed essential surfaces of given genus g in a compact 3-manifold with torus boundary. In the case of hyperbolic 3-manifolds we obtain uniform quadratic bounds in g for the number of possible slopes, independent of the 3-manifold. We also look at some related quantities, such as how many times the slopes of two such surfaces of specified genus can intersect.
For any hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with totally geodesic boundary, there are finitely many boundary slopes for essential immersed surfaces of a given genus. There is a uniform bound for the number of such boundary slopes if the genus of $\partial M$ or the volume of $M$ is bounded above. When the volume is bounded above, then area of $\partial M$ is bounded above and the length of closed geodesic on $\partial M$ is bounded below.
We show that for certain hyperbolic 3-manifolds, all boundary slopes are slopes of immersed incompressible surfaces, covered by incompressible embeddings in some finite cover. The manifolds include hyperbolic punctured torus bundles and hyperbolic two-bridge knots.
In this thesis we describe how to estimate the distance spanned in the pants graph by a train track splitting sequence on a surface, up to multiplicative and additive constants. If some moderate assumptions on a splitting sequence are satisfied, each vertex set of a train track in it will represent a vertex of a graph which is naturally quasi-isometric to the pants graph; moreover the splitting sequence gives an edge-path in this graph so, more precisely, our distance estimate holds between the extreme points of this path. The present distance estimate is inspired by a result of Masur, Mosher …
We show that every hyperbolic link complement contains closed quasi-Fuchsian surfaces. As a consequence, we obtain the result that on a hyperbolic link complement, if we remove from each cusp of the manifold a certain finite set of slopes, then all remaining Dehn fillings on the link complement yield manifolds with closed immersed incompressible surfaces.
A hyperbolic conjugacy class in the modular group PSL(2,Z) corresponds to a closed geodesic in the modular orbifold. Some of these geodesics virtually bound immersed surfaces, and some do not; the distinction is related to the polyhedral structure in the unit ball of the stable commutator length norm. We prove the following stability theorem: for every hyperbolic element of the modular group, the product of this element with a sufficiently large power of a parabolic element is represented by a geodesic that virtually bounds an immersed surface.
Motivated by classical theorems on minimal surface theory in compact hyperbolic three-manifolds, we investigate the questions of existence and deformations for least area minimal surfaces in complete noncompact hyperbolic three-manifold of finite volume. We prove any closed immersed incompressible surface can be deformed to a closed immersed least area surface within its homotopy class in any cusped hyperbolic three-manifold. Our techniques highlight how special structures of these cusped hyperbolic three-manifolds prevent any least area minimal surface going too deep into the cusped region.
We classify the 3-dimensional hyperbolic polyhedral orbifolds that contain no embedded essential 2-suborbifolds, up to decomposition along embedded hyperbolic triangle orbifolds (turnovers). We give a necessary condition for a 3-dimensional hyperbolic polyhedral orbifold to contain an immersed (singular) hyperbolic turnover, we classify the triangle subgroups of the fundamental groups of orientable 3-dimensional hyperbolic tetrahedral orbifolds in the case when all of the vertices of the tetrahedra are non-finite, and we provide a conjectural classification of all the triangle subgroups of the…
We present a quantitative isolation property of the lifts of properly immersed geodesic planes in the frame bundle of a geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$-manifold. Our estimates are polynomials in the tight areas and Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan densities of geodesic planes, with degree given by the modified critical exponents.
We study totally geodesic planes in hyperbolic 3-manifolds $M$ having incompressible core and degenerate ends. We prove a Ratner-type phenomenon: a closed minimal $PSL(2,R)-$invariant subset of $M$ is either an immersed totally geodesic surface or all of $M$. We also show that for an arbitrary infinite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ without parabolics and with finitely generated fundamental group, the number of compact totally geodesic surfaces in $M$ is finite.
In this paper, it is shown that every closed hyperbolic 3-manifold contains an immersed quasi-Fuchsian closed subsurface of odd Euler characteristic. The construction adopts the good pants method, and the primary new ingredient is an enhanced version of the connection principle, which allows one to connect any two frames with a path of frames in a prescribed relative homology class of the frame bundle. The existence result is applied to show that every uniform lattice of $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ admits an exhausting nested sequence of sublattices with exponential homological torsion growth…
It is shown in this paper that given any closed oriented hyperbolic 3-manifold, every closed oriented 3-manifold is mapped onto by a finite cover of that manifold via a map of degree 1, or in other words, virtually 1-dominated by that manifold. This improves a known result of virtual 2-domination. The proof invokes a recently developed enhanced version of the connection principle in good pants constructions.
Let $F$ be a closed essential surface in a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with a toroidal cusp $N$. The depth of $F$ in $N$ is the maximal distance from points of $F$ in $N$ to the boundary of $N$. It will be shown that if $F$ is an essential pleated surface which is not coannular to the boundary torus of $N$ then the depth of $F$ in $N$ is bounded above by a constant depending only on the genus of $F$. The result is used to show that an immersed closed essential surface in $M$ which is not coannular to the torus boundary components of $M$ will remain essential in the Dehn filling manifold $M(γ)$ a…
In two former papers, the authors independently proved that the space of hyperbolic cone-3-manifolds with cone angles less than 2π and fixed singular locus is locally parametrized by the cone angles. In this sequel, we investigate the local shape of the deformation space when the singular locus is no longer fixed, i.e. when the singular vertices can be split. We show that the different possible splittings correspond to specific pair-of-pants decompositions of the smooth parts of the links of the singular vertices, and that under suitable assumptions the corresponding subspace of deformations i…
Let $M$ be an orientable 3-manifold with $\partial M$ a single torus. We show that the number of boundary slopes of immersed essential surfaces with genus at most $g$ is bounded by a quadratic function of $g$. In the hyperbolic case, this was proved earlier by Hass, Rubinstein and Wang.
We prove the convex combination theorem for hyperbolic n-manifolds. Applications are given both in high dimensions and in 3 dimensions. One consequence is that given two geometrically finite subgroups of a discrete group of isometries of hyperbolic n-space, satisfying a natural condition on their parabolic subgroups, there are finite index subgroups which generate a subgroup that is an amalgamated free product. Constructions of infinite volume hyperbolic n-manifolds are described by gluing lower dimensional manifolds. It is shown that every slope on a cusp of a hyperbolic 3-manifold is a multi…
We exhibit the first examples of compact orientable hyperbolic manifolds that do not have any spin structure. We show that such manifolds exist in all dimensions $n \geq 4$. The core of the argument is the construction of a compact orientable hyperbolic $4$-manifold $M$ that contains a surface $S$ of genus $3$ with self intersection $1$. The $4$-manifold $M$ has an odd intersection form and is hence not spin. It is built by carefully assembling some right angled $120$-cells along a pattern inspired by the minimum trisection of $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2$. The manifold $M$ is also the first exampl…
This paper proves that every finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold M contains a ubiquitous collection of closed, immersed, quasi-Fuchsian surfaces. These surfaces are ubiquitous in the sense that their preimages in the universal cover separate any pair of disjoint, non-asymptotic geodesic planes. The proof relies in a crucial way on the corresponding theorem of Kahn and Markovic for closed 3-manifolds. As a corollary of this result and a companion statement about surfaces with cusps, we recover Wise's theorem that the fundamental group of M acts freely and cocompactly on a CAT(0) cube complex.
A theory of transversely oriented spun-normal immersed surfaces in ideally triangulated 3--manifolds is developed in this paper, including linear functionals determining the boundary curves, Euler characteristic and homology class of these immersions. This is used to develop and implement an algorithm to compute the unit ball of the Thurston norm for cusped hyperbolic 3--manifolds of finite volume. As an application of independent interest, we give an upper bound on the minimal entropy of pseudo-Anosov maps of surfaces with number of cusps bounded linearly in genus.
We introduce and study some deformations of complete finite-volume hyperbolic four-manifolds that may be interpreted as four-dimensional analogues of Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn filling. We construct in particular an analytic path of complete, finite-volume cone four-manifolds $M_t$ that interpolates between two hyperbolic four-manifolds $M_0$ and $M_1$ with the same volume $\frac {8}3π^2$. The deformation looks like the familiar hyperbolic Dehn filling paths that occur in dimension three, where the cone angle of a core simple closed geodesic varies monotonically from $0$ to $2π$. Here, the sin…
Reid has asked whether hyperbolic manifolds with the same geodesic length spectrum must be commensurable. Building toward a negative answer to this question, we construct examples of hyperbolic 3-manifolds that share an arbitrarily large portion of the length spectrum but are not commensurable. More precisely, for all sufficiently large n, we construct a pair of incommensurable hyperbolic 3-manifolds $N_n$ and $N_n^μ$ whose volume is approximately n and whose length spectra agree up to length n. Both $N_n$ and $N_n^μ$ are built by gluing two standard submanifolds along a complicated pseudo-Ano…
For $n \ge 2$, we prove that a finite volume complex hyperbolic $n$-manifold containing infinitely many maximal properly immersed totally geodesic submanifolds of dimension at least two is arithmetic, paralleling our previous work for real hyperbolic manifolds. As in the real hyperbolic case, our primary result is a superrigidity theorem for certain representations of complex hyperbolic lattices. The proof requires developing new general tools not needed in the real hyperbolic case. Our main results also have a number of other applications. For example, we prove nonexistence of certain maps be…
This article is dedicated to prove Buser's conjecture about Bers' constants for spheres with cusps (or marked points) and for hyperelliptic surfaces. More specifically, our main theorem states that any hyperbolic sphere with $n$ cusps has a pants decomposition with all of its geodesics of length bounded by a constant roughly square root of $n$. Other results include lower and upper bounds for Bers' constants for hyperelliptic surfaces and spheres with boundary geodesics.

We study configurations of immersed curves in surfaces and surfaces in 3-manifolds. Among other results, we show that primitive curves have only finitely many configurations which minimize the number of double points. We give examples of minimal configurations not realized by geodesics in any hyperbolic metric.
