We prove a partial generalization of Bonahon's tameness result to surfaces inside irreducible 3-manifolds with hyperbolic fundamental group.
Bonahon's result states that geometrically infinite ends of freely indecomposable hyperbolic 3-manifolds are simply degenerate. It is easy to see that a geometrically infinite end gives rise to a sequence of curves on the corresponding surface whose geodesic representatives are not contained in any compact set. The main step in his proof is showing that one may assume that these curves are simple on the surface.
In this paper, we generalize the main step of Bonahon's proof, showing that a geometrically infinite end gives rise to a sequence of simple surface curves whose geodesic representatives are not contained in any compact set.
We prove that, for any two finite volume hyperbolic $3$-manifolds, the amalgamation of their fundamental groups along any nontrivial geometrically finite subgroup is not LERF. This generalizes the author's previous work on nonLERFness of amalgamations of hyperbolic $3$-manifold groups along abelian subgroups. A consequence of this result is that closed arithmetic hyperbolic $4$-manifolds have nonLERF fundamental groups. Along with the author's previous work, we get that, for any arithmetic hyperbolic manifold with dimension at least $4$, with possible exceptions in $7$-dimensional manifolds de…
In this paper we extend Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn surgery theorem to a class of geometrically infinite hyperbolic 3-manifolds. As an application we prove a modest density theorem for Kleinian groups. We also discuss hyperbolic Dehn surgery on geometrically finite hypebolic cone-manifolds.
In a recent paper Hodgson and Kerckhoff prove a local rigidity theorem for finite volume, three dimensional hyperbolic cone-manifolds. In this paper we extend this result to geometrically finite cone-manifolds. Our methods also give a new proof of a local version of the classical rigidity theorem for geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
A finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold geometrically bounds if it is the geodesic boundary of a finite-volume hyperbolic 4-manifold. We construct here an example of non-compact, finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold that geometrically bounds. The 3-manifold is the complement of a link with eight components, and its volume is roughly equal to 29.311.
In this paper we provide the first examples of arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds that are rational homology spheres and bound geometrically either compact or cusped hyperbolic 4-manifolds.
We show that the number of isometry classes of cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds that bound geometrically grows at least super-exponentially with their volume, both in the arithmetic and non-arithmetic settings.
Let Gamma_0 be a discrete group. For a pair (j,rho) of representations of Gamma_0 into PO(n,1)=Isom(H^n) with j geometrically finite, we study the set of (j,rho)-equivariant Lipschitz maps from the real hyperbolic space H^n to itself that have minimal Lipschitz constant. Our main result is the existence of a geodesic lamination that is "maximally stretched" by all such maps when the minimal constant is at least 1. As an application, we generalize two-dimensional results and constructions of Thurston and extend his asymmetric metric on Teichmüller space to a geometrically finite setting and to …
We present recent results on counting and distribution of circles in a given circle packing invariant under a geometrically finite Kleinian group and discuss how the dynamics of flows on geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$ manifolds are related. Our results apply to Apollonian circle packings, Sierpinski curves, Schottky dances, etc.
In this paper, we develop a theory on the degenerations of Blaschke products $\mathcal{B}_d$ to study the boundaries of hyperbolic components. We give a combinatorial classification of geometrically finite polynomials on the boundary of the main hyperbolic component $\mathcal{H}_d$ containing $z^d$. We show the closure $\overline{\mathcal{H}_d}$ is not a topological manifold with boundary for $d\geq 4$ by constructing self-bumps on its boundary.
In this note, we show that there exist cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds that embed geodesically, but cannot bound geometrically. Thus, being a geometric boundary is a non-trivial property for such manifolds. Our result complements the work by Long and Reid on geometric boundaries of compact hyperbolic $4$-manifolds, and by Kolpakov, Reid and Slavich on embedding arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds.
A closed connected hyperbolic $n$-manifold bounds geometrically if it is isometric to the geodesic boundary of a compact hyperbolic $(n+1)$-manifold. A. Reid and D. Long have shown by arithmetic methods the existence of infinitely many manifolds that bound geometrically in every dimension. We construct here infinitely many explicit examples in dimension $n=3$ using right-angled dodecahedra and $120$-cells and a simple colouring technique introduced by M. Davis and T. Januszkiewicz. Namely, for every $k\geqslant 1$, we build an orientable compact closed $3$-manifold tessellated by $16k$ right-a…
In this paper, we construct families of nonisometric hyperbolic orbifolds that contain the same isometry classes of nonflat totally geodesic subspaces. The main tool is a variant of the well-known Sunada method for constructing length-isospectral Riemannian manifolds that handles totally geodesic submanifolds of multiple codimensions simultaneously.
The density conjecture of Bers, Sullivan and Thurston predicts that each complete hyperbolic 3-manifold M with finitely generated fundamental group is an algebraic limit of geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We prove that the conjecture obtains for each complete hyperbolic 3-manifold with no cusps and incompressible ends.
We show that some hyperbolic 3-manifolds which are tessellated by copies of the regular ideal hyperbolic tetrahedron embed geodesically in a complete, finite volume, hyperbolic 4-manifold. This allows us to prove that the complement of the figure-eight knot geometrically bounds a complete, finite volume hyperbolic 4-manifold. This the first example of geometrically bounding hyperbolic knot complement and, amongst known examples of geometrically bounding manifolds, the one with the smallest volume.
Let G=SO(n,1) and Gamma a geometrically finite Zariski dense subgroup of G which is contained in an arithmetic subgroup of G. Denoting by Gamma(q) the principal congruence subgroup of Gamma of level q, and fixing a positive number λ_0 strictly smaller than (n-1)^2/4, we show that, as q tends to infinity along primes, the number of Laplacian eigenvalues of the congruence cover Gamma(q)\ H^n smaller than lambda_0 is at most of order [Gamma:Gamma(q)]^c for some c=c(λ_0)>0.
The following discourse is inspired by the works on hyperbolic groups of Epstein, and Neumann/Reeves. Epstein showed that geometrically finite hyperbolic groups are biautomatic. Neumann/Reeves showed that virtually central extensions of word hyperbolic groups are biautomatic. We prove the following generalisation: Theorem. Let H be a geometrically finite hyperbolic group. Let sigma in H^2(H) and suppose that sigma restricted to P is zero for any parabolic subgroup P of H. Then the extension of H by sigma is biautomatic. We also prove another generalisation of the result of Epstein. Theorem. Le…
Any action of a group $Γ$ on $\mathbb H^3$ by isometries yields a class in degree three bounded cohomology by pulling back the volume cocycle to $Γ$. We prove that the bounded cohomology of finitely generated Kleinian groups without parabolic elements distinguishes the asymptotic geometry of geometrically infinite ends of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. That is, if two homotopy equivalent hyperbolic manifolds with infinite volume and without parabolic cusps have different geometrically infinite end invariants, then they define a $2$ dimensional subspace of bounded cohomology. Our techniques apply to…
This is a summary of the material for 3 lectures on geometrically finite and infinite Kleinian groups delivered by the author at a workshop held at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in April 2014.
We prove that, if a group is relatively hyperbolic, the parabolic subgroups are virtually nilpotent if and only if there exists a hyperbolic space with bounded geometry on which it acts geometrically finitely. This provides, by use of M. Bonk and O. Schramm embedding theorem, a very short proof of the finiteness of asymptotic dimension of relatively hyperbolic groups with virtually nilpotent parabolic subgroups (which is known to imply Novikov conjectures
In this paper, we prove a limit set intersection theorem in relatively hyperbolic groups. Our approach is based on a study of dynamical quasiconvexity of relatively quasiconvex subgroups. Using dynamical quasiconvexity, many well-known results on limit sets of geometrically finite Kleinian groups are derived in general convergence groups. We also establish dynamical quasiconvexity of undistorted subgroups in finitely generated groups with nontrivial Floyd boundary.
We prove that the automorphism group of every infinitely-ended finitely generated group is acylindrically hyperbolic. In particular $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb{F}_n)$ is acylindrically hyperbolic for every $n\ge 2$. More generally, if $G$ is a group which is not virtually cyclic, and hyperbolic relative to a finite collection $\mathcal{P}$ of finitely generated proper subgroups, then $\mathrm{Aut}(G,\mathcal{P})$ is acylindrically hyperbolic. As a consequence, a free-by-cyclic group $\mathbb{F}_n\rtimes_φ\mathbb{Z}$ is acylindrically hyperbolic if and only if $φ$ has infinite order in $\mathrm{Out}(…
We construct examples of free-by-cyclic hyperbolic groups which fiber in infinitely many ways over Z. The construction involves adding a specialized square 2-cell to a non-positively curved, squared 2-complex defined by labeled oriented graphs. The fundamental groups of the resulting complexes are hyperbolic, free-by-cyclic and can be mapped onto Z in infinitely many ways.
We generalize Bonahon's characterization of geometrically infinite torsion-free discrete subgroups of PSL(2, $\mathbb{C}$) to geometrically infinite discrete isometry subgroups in the case of rank 1 symmetric spaces, and, under the assumption of bounded torsion, to the case of negatively pinched Hadamard manifolds. Every such geometrically infinite isometry subgroup $Γ$ has a set of nonconical limit points with cardinality of continuum.
Bowditch characterized relative hyperbolicity in terms of group actions on fine hyperbolic graphs with finitely many edge orbits and finite edge stabilizers. In this paper, we define generalized fine actions on hyperbolic graphs, in which the peripheral subgroups are allowed to stabilize finite sub-graphs rather than stabilizing a point. Generalized fine actions are useful for studying groups that act relatively geometrically on a CAT(0) cube complex, which were recently defined by the first two authors. Specifically, we show that a group acting relatively geometrically on a CAT(0) cube comple…
Let G be the identity component of SO(n,1), acting linearly on a finite dimensional real vector space V. Consider a vector w_0 in V such that the stabilizer of w_0 is a symmetric subgroup of G or the stabilizer of the line Rw_0 is a parabolic subgroup of G. For any non-elementary discrete subgroup Gamma of G with w_0Gamma discrete, we compute an asymptotic formula for the number of points in w_0Gamma of norm at most T, provided that the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure on the associated hyperbolic manifold and the Gamma skinning size of w_0 are finite. The main ergodic ingredient in our approac…
We show that for a strongly convergent sequence of purely loxodromic finitely generated Kleinian groups with incompressible ends, Cannon-Thurston maps, viewed as maps from a fixed base limit set to the Riemann sphere, converge uniformly. For algebraically convergent sequences we show that there exist examples where even pointwise convergence of Cannon-Thurston maps fails.
In this paper we deepen the analysis of certain classes M_{g,k} of hyperbolic 3-manifolds that were introduced in a previous work by B. Martelli, C. Petronio and the author. Each element of M_{g,k} is an oriented complete finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold with compact connected geodesic boundary of genus g and k cusps. We study small deformations of the complete hyperbolic structure of manifolds in M_{g,k} via a close analysis of their geodesic triangulations. We prove that several elements in M_{g,k} admit non-homeomorphic hyperbolic Dehn fillings sharing the same volume, homology, cusp vol…
We study unions of fundamental domains of a Fuchsian group, especially those with hyperbolic plane metric realizing the metric of the corresponding hyperbolic surface. We call these unions the \textit{geodesic covers} of the Fuchsian group or the hyperbolic surface. The paper contributes to showing that finiteness of geodesic covers is basically another characterization of geometrically finiteness. The resolution of geometrically finite case is based on Shimizu's lemma.
For a torsion free Kleinian group $Γ$ without parabolics, we consider the decomposition of the limit set $L(Γ)$ into conical and ending limit sets and compare the Patterson-Sullivan measure with the harmonic measure on $L(Γ)$ when $L(Γ)=S^2_\infty$.
Let $M$ be a geometrically finite acylindrical hyperbolic 3-manifold and let $M^*$ denote the interior of the convex core of M. We show that any geodesic plane in $M^*$ is either closed or dense, and that there are only countably many closed geodesic planes in $M^*$. These results were obtained earlier by McMullen, Mohammadi, and the second named author when M is convex cocompact. As a corollary we obtain that when $M$ covers an arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold $M_0$, the topological behavior of a geodesic plane in $M^*$ is governed by that of the corresponding plane in $M_0$. We construct a c…
Geometrically infinite Kleinain groups have nonconical limit sets with the cardinality of the continuum. In this paper, we construct a geometrically infinite Fuchsian group such that the Hausdorff dimension of the nonconical limit set equals zero. For finitely generated, geometrically infinite Kleinian groups, we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the nonconical limit set is positive.
We show that every plumbing of disc bundles over surfaces whose genera satisfy a simple inequality may be embedded as a convex submanifold in some closed hyperbolic four-manifold. In particular its interior has a geometrically finite hyperbolic structure that covers a closed hyperbolic four-manifold.
We give several sufficient conditions for uniform exponential growth in the setting of virtually torsion-free hierarchically hyperbolic groups. For example, any hierarchically hyperbolic group that is also acylindrically hyperbolic has uniform exponential growth. In addition, we provide a quasi-isometric characterization of hierarchically hyperbolic groups without uniform exponential growth. To achieve this, we gain new insights on the structure of certain classes of hierarchically hyperbolic groups. Our methods give a new unified proof of uniform exponential growth for several examples of gro…
In the closed, non-Haken, hyperbolic class of examples generated by (2p,q) Dehn fillings of Figure 8 knot space, the geometrically incompressible one-sided surfaces are identified by the filling ratio p/q and determined to be unique in all cases. When applied to one-sided Heegaard splittings, this can be used to classify all geometrically incompressible splittings in this class of closed, hyperbolic examples; no analogous classification exists for two-sided Heegaard splittings.
Let $M$ be a hyperbolic 3-manifold with no rank two cusps admitting an embedding in $\mathbb S^3$. Then, if $M$ admits an exhaustion by $π_1$-injective sub-manifolds there exists cantor sets $C_n\subset \mathbb S^3$ such that $N_n=\mathbb S^3\setminus C_n$ is hyperbolic and $N_n\rightarrow M$ geometrically.
Given a geometrically finite hyperbolic cone-manifold, with the cone singularity sufficiently short, we construct a one parameter family of cone-manifolds decreasing the cone angle to zero. We also control the geometry of this one parameter family via the Schwarzian derivative of the projective boundary and the length of closed geodesics.
We introduce a new technique for finding CAT(-1) surfaces in hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We use this to show that a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold with finitely generated fundamental group is geometrically and topologically tame.
Let N be a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold that is an algebraic limit of geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We show N is homeomorphic to the interior of a compact 3-manifold, or tame, if one of the following conditions holds: (1) N has non-empty conformal boundary, (2) N is not homotopy equivalent to a compression body, or (3) N is a strong limit of geometrically finite manifolds. The first case proves Ahlfors' measure conjecture for Kleinian groups in the closure of the geometrically finite locus: given any algebraic limit G of geometrically finite Kleinian groups, the limit set of G…
In this paper, we generalize Bonahon's characterization of geometrically infinite torsion-free discrete subgroups of PSL(2, $\mathbb{C}$) to geometrically infinite discrete subgroups $Γ$ of isometries of negatively pinched Hadamard manifolds $X$. We then generalize a theorem of Bishop to prove that every discrete geometrically infinite isometry subgroup $Γ$ has a set of nonconical limit points with the cardinality of the continuum.
This paper shows that many hyperbolic manifolds obtained by glueing arithmetic pieces embed into higher-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds as codimension-one totally geodesic submanifolds. As a consequence, many Gromov--Pyatetski-Shapiro and Agol--Belolipetsky--Thomson non-arithmetic manifolds embed geodesically. Moreover, we show that the number of commensurability classes of hyperbolic manifolds with a representative of volume $\leq v$ that bounds geometrically is at least $v^{Cv}$, for $v$ large enough.
We construct infinite series of non-simple ideal hyperbolic Coxeter 4-polytopes whose growth rates are Perron numbers. This infinite series is the first example of such a non-compact infinite polytopal series.
Suppose that N is a geometrically finite orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold. Let P(N,C) be the space of all geometrically finite hyperbolic structures on N whose convex core is bent along a set C of simple closed curves. We prove that the map which associates to each structure in P(N,C) the lengths of the curves in the bending locus C is one-to-one. If C is maximal, the traces of the curves in C are local parameters for the representation space R(N).
Carrier graphs were first introduced for closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds by White. In this paper, we first generalize this definition to carrier graphs for representations of a rank two free group into the isometry group of hyperbolic three space. Then we prove the existence and the finiteness of minimal carrier graphs for those representations which are discrete, faithful and geometrically finite, and more generally, those that satisfy certain finiteness conditions first introduced by Bowditch.
We study geometry, topology and deformation spaces of noncompact complex hyperbolic manifolds (geometrically finite, with variable negative curvature), whose properties make them surprisingly different from real hyperbolic manifolds with constant negative curvature. This study uses an interaction between Kähler geometry of the complex hyperbolic space and the contact structure at its infinity (the one-point compactification of the Heisenberg group), in particular an established structural theorem for discrete group actions on nilpotent Lie groups.
Consider a geometrically finite Kleinian group $G$ without parabolic or elliptic elements, with its Kleinian manifold $M=(\H^3\cup Ω_G)/G$. Suppose that for each boundary component of $M$, either a maximal and connected measured lamination in the Masur domain or a marked conformal structure is given. In this setting, we shall prove that there is an algebraic limit $Γ$ of quasi-conformal deformations of $G$ such that there is a homeomorphism $h$ from $\mathrm{Int} M$ to $\H^3/Γ$ compatible with the natural isomorphism from $G$ to $Γ$, the given laminations are unrealisable in $\H^3/Γ$, and the …
Neumann and Reid described in their paper "Rigidity of cusps in deformations of hyperbolic 3-orbifolds" (Math Ann. 295 (1993) no. 2, 223--237) a 2-cusped hyperbolic 3-orbifold in which the cusps are geometrically isolated. Based on numerical evidence provided by Jeff Weeks' snappea program, they conjectured that the cusps are strongly geometrically isolated, a fact which we establish here. We also give a parameterization of the Dehn surgery space of this orbifold which has amusing properties.
We present a quantitative isolation property of the lifts of properly immersed geodesic planes in the frame bundle of a geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$-manifold. Our estimates are polynomials in the tight areas and Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan densities of geodesic planes, with degree given by the modified critical exponents.
