We establish two-sided bounds for the complexity of two infinite series of closed orientable 3-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds, the Lobell manifolds and the Fibonacci manifolds.
We give a method for computing upper and lower bounds for the volume of a non-obtuse hyperbolic polyhedron in terms of the combinatorics of the 1-skeleton. We introduce an algorithm that detects the geometric decomposition of good 3-orbifolds with planar singular locus and underlying manifold the 3-sphere. The volume bounds follow from techniques related to the proof of Thurston's Orbifold Theorem, Schläfli's formula, and previous results of the author giving volume bounds for right-angled hyperbolic polyhedra.
In the closed, non-Haken, hyperbolic class of examples generated by (2p,q) Dehn fillings of Figure 8 knot space, the geometrically incompressible one-sided surfaces are identified by the filling ratio p/q and determined to be unique in all cases. When applied to one-sided Heegaard splittings, this can be used to classify all geometrically incompressible splittings in this class of closed, hyperbolic examples; no analogous classification exists for two-sided Heegaard splittings.
We consider closed orientable 3-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds which are cyclic branched coverings of the 3-sphere, with branching set being a two-bridge knot (or link). We establish two-sided linear bounds depending on the order of the covering for the Matveev complexity of the covering manifold. The lower estimate uses the hyperbolic volume and results of Cao-Meyerhoff and Gueritaud-Futer (who recently improved previous work of Lackenby), while the upper estimate is based on an explicit triangulation, which also allows us to give a bound on the Delzant T-invariant of the fundamental group …
For a compact right-angled polyhedron $R$ in $\mathbb H^3$ denote by $\operatorname{vol} (R)$ the volume and by $\operatorname{vert} (R)$ the number of vertices. Upper and lower bounds for $\operatorname{vol} (R)$ in terms of $\operatorname{vert} (R)$ were obtained in \cite{A09}. Constructing a 2-parameter family of polyhedra, we show that the asymptotic upper bound $5 v_3 / 8$, where $v_3$ is the volume of the ideal regular tetrahedron in $\mathbb H^3$, is a double limit point for ratios $\operatorname{vol} (R) / \operatorname{vert} (R)$. Moreover, we improve the lower bound in the case $\ope…
A Margulis spacetime is a complete affine 3-manifold M with nonsolvable fundamental group. Associated to every Margulis spacetime is a noncompact complete hyperbolic surface S. We show that every Margulis spacetime is orientable, even though S may be nonorientable. We classify Margulis spacetimes when S is homeomorphic to a two-holed cross-surface, that is, the complement of two disjoint discs in the real projective plane. We show that every such manifold is homeomorphic to a solid handlebody of genus two, and admits a fundamental polyhedron bounded by crooked planes. Furthermore, the deformat…
In this paper we study existence and lack thereof of closed embedded orientable co-dimension one totally geodesic submanifolds of minimal volume cusped orientable hyperbolic manifolds.
We show that the hyperbolic structure on a closed, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifold can be constructed from a solution to the hyperbolic gluing equations using any triangulation with essential edges. The key ingredients in the proof are Thurston's spinning construction and a volume rigidity result attributed by Dunfield to Thurston, Gromov and Goldman. As an application, we show that this gives a new algorithm to detect hyperbolic structures on closed 3-manifolds.
Colding and Gabai have given an effective version of Li's theorem that non-Haken hyperbolic 3-manifolds have finitely many irreducible Heegaard splittings. As a corollary of their work, we show that Haken hyperbolic 3-manifolds have a finite collection of strongly irreducible Heegaard surfaces $S_i$ and incompressible surfaces $K_j$ such that any strongly irreducible Heegaard surface is a Haken sum $S_i + \sum_j n_j K_j$, up to one-sided associates of the Heegaard surfaces.
In this paper, we classify all of the five-sided three-dimensional hyperbolic polyhedra with one ideal vertex, which have the shape of a triangular prism. We show how to find each such polyhedron in the upper half-space model by considering lines and circles in the plane. Finally, we give matrix generators in $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb C)$ for the orientation-preserving subgroup of each corresponding reflection group.
We show that every plumbing of disc bundles over surfaces whose genera satisfy a simple inequality may be embedded as a convex submanifold in some closed hyperbolic four-manifold. In particular its interior has a geometrically finite hyperbolic structure that covers a closed hyperbolic four-manifold.
We prove that there is a true asymptotic formula for the number of one sided simple closed curves of length $\leq L$ on any Fuchsian real projective plane with three points removed. The exponent of growth is independent of the hyperbolic structure, and it is noninteger, in contrast to counting results of Mirzakhani for simple closed curves on orientable Fuchsian surfaces.
We show there is an upper bound on the diameter of a closed, hyperbolic 3-manifold in terms of the length of any presentation of its fundamental group.
Let $M$ be a compact hyperbolic $3$-manifold with volume $V$. Let $L$ be a link such that $M\setminus L$ is hyperbolic. For any hyperbolic link $L$ in $M$, in this article, we establish an upper bound of the length of an $n^{th}$ shortest closed geodesic as a logarithmic function of $V$ in $M\setminus L$. Our works complement the work of Lakeland and Leininger \cite{Christopher} on the upper bound of systole length.
In the present paper, we show that the minimal length of closed geodesics on finite-type hyperbolic surfaces with self-intersection number $k$ has order $2\log k$ as $k$ gets large.
We study closed geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces, and give bounds for their angles of intersection and self-intersection, and for the sides of the polygons that they form, depending only on the lengths of the geodesics
In this paper, we develop general techniques for computing the G-index of a closed, spin, hyperbolic 2- or 4-manifold, and apply these techniques to compute the G-index of the fully symmetric spin structure of the Davis hyperbolic 4-manifold.
We show that closed 3-manifolds with high Heegaard distance and bounded subsurface Heegaard distance are primitive stable when they are regarded as representations from the free group corresponding to the handlebody. This implies that any point on the boundary of Schottky space can be approximated by primitive stable representations corresponding to closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
Let M be a closed hyperbolic three manifold. We construct closed surfaces which map by immersions into M so that for each one the corresponding mapping on the universal covering spaces is an embedding, or, in other words, the corresponding induced mapping on fundamental groups is an injection.
We show that for a representation of the fundamental group of a triangulated closed 3-manifold (not necessarily hyperbolic) into $\PSL$ so that any edge loop has non-trivial image under the representation, there exist uncountably many solutions to the hyperbolic gluing equation whose associated representations are conjugate to the given representation, and whose volumes are equal to the volume of the given representation.
In this paper, we will use Kahn-Markovic's almost totally geodesic surfaces to construct certain $π_1$-injective 2-complexes in closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Such 2-complexes are locally almost totally geodesic except along a 1-dimensional subcomplex. Using Agol and Wise's result that fundamental groups of hyperbolic 3-manifolds are LERF and quasi-convex subgroups are virtual retract, we will show that closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds virtually contain any prescribed homological torsion: For any finite abelian group $A$, and any closed hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$, there exists a finite cover $N$ o…
Among other things, we prove the following two topologcal statements about closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. First, every rational second homology class of a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a positve integral multiple represented by an oriented connected closed $π_1$-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. Second, every rationally null-homologous, $π_1$-injectively immersed oriented closed 1-submanifold in a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has an equidegree finite cover which bounds an oriented compact $π_1$-injective immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. In part, we exploit techniques develo…
We outline a rigorous algorithm, first suggested by Casson, for determining whether a closed orientable 3-manifold M is hyperbolic, and to compute the hyperbolic structure, if one exists. The algorithm requires that a procedure has been given to solve the word problem in π_1(M).
It is known that the volume function for hyperbolic manifolds of dimension $\geq 3$ is finite-to-one. We show that the number of nonhomeomorphic hyperbolic 4-manifolds with the same volume can be made arbitrarily large. This is done by constructing a sequence of finite-sided finite-volume polyhedra with side-pairings that yield manifolds. In fact, we show that arbitrarily many nonhomeomorphic hyperbolic 4-manifolds may share a fundamental polyhedron. As a by-product of our examples, we also show in a constructive way that the set of volumes of hyperbolic 4-manifolds contains the set of even in…
This article provides sufficient conditions for a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with non zero first Betti number to fiber over the circle, and to find a fiber in $M$. Those conditions are formulated in terms of the behavior the circular characteristic in finite regular covers of $M$. We define the circular characteristic as an invariant associated to a non trivial cohomology class $α$ of $M$, using a Heegaard characteristic.
In all dimensions $n \ge 5$, we prove the existence of closed orientable hyperbolic manifolds that do not admit any $\text{spin}^c$ structure, and in fact we show that there are infinitely many commensurability classes of such manifolds. These manifolds all have non-vanishing third Stiefel--Whitney class $w_3$ and are all arithmetic of simplest type. More generally, we show that for each $k \ge 1$ and $n \ge 4k+1$, there exist infinitely many commensurability classes of closed orientable hyperbolic $n$-manifolds $M$ with $w_{4k-1}(M) \ne 0$.
A well-known theorem of Wolpert shows that the Weil-Petersson symplectic form on Teichmüller space, computed on two infinitesimal twists along simple closed geodesics on a fixed hyperbolic surface, equals the sum of the cosines of the intersection angles. We define an infinitesimal deformation starting from a more general object, namely a balanced geodesic graph, by which any tangent vector to Teichmüller space can be represented. We then prove a generalization of Wolpert's formula for these deformations. In the case of simple closed curves, we recover the theorem of Wolpert.
We correct and complete a conjecture of D. Gabai, R. Meyerhoff and N. Thurston on the classification and properties of thin tubed closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We additionally show that if N is a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold, then either N=Vol3 or N contains a closed geodesic that is the core of an embedded tube of radius log(3)/2.
A celebrated result of Mirzakhani states that, if $(S,m)$ is a finite area \emph{orientable} hyperbolic surface, then the number of simple closed geodesics of length less than $L$ on $(S,m)$ is asymptotically equivalent to a positive constant times $L^{\dim\mathcal{ML}(S)}$, where $\mathcal{ML}(S)$ denotes the space of measured laminations on $S$. We observed on some explicit examples that this result does not hold for \emph{nonorientable} hyperbolic surfaces. The aim of this article is to explain this surprising phenomenon. Let $(S,m)$ be a finite area \emph{nonorientable} hyperbolic surface.…
Extending methods first used by Casson, we show how to verify a hyperbolic structure on a finite triangulation of a closed 3-manifold using interval arithmetic methods. A key ingredient is a new theoretical result (akin to a theorem by Neumann-Zagier and Moser for ideal triangulations upon which HIKMOT is based) showing that there is a redundancy among the edge equations if the edges avoid "gimbal lock". We successfully test the algorithm on known examples such as the orientable closed manifolds in the Hodgson-Weeks census and the bundle census by Bell. We also tackle a previously unsolved pro…
The Generalized Smale Conjecture asserts that if M is a closed 3-manifold with constant positive curvature, then the inclusion of the group of isometries into the group of diffeomorphisms is a homotopy equivalence. For the 3-sphere, this was the classical Smale Conjecture proved by A. Hatcher. N. Ivanov proved the Generalized Smale Conjecture for the M which contain a 1-sided Klein bottle and such that no Seifert fibering is nonsingular on the complement of any vertical Klein bottle. We prove it in all remaining cases containing a one-sided Klein bottle, except for the lens space L(4,1).
This paper introduces a rigorous computer-assisted procedure for analyzing hyperbolic 3-manifolds. This technique is used to complete the proof of several long-standing rigidity conjectures in 3-manifold theory as well as to provide a new lower bound for the volume of a closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold. We prove the following result: \it\noindent Let $N$ be a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold. Then \begin{enumerate} \item[(1)] If $f\colon M \to N$ is a homotopy equivalence where $M$ is a closed irreducible 3-manifold, then $f$ is homotopic to a homeomorphism. \item[(2)] If $f,g\colon M\to N$…
Each free homotopy class of directed closed curves on a surface with boundary can be described by a cyclic reduced word in the generators of the fundamental group and their inverses. The word length is the number of letters of the cyclic word. If the surface has a hyperbolic metric with geodesic boundary, the geometric length of the class is the length of the unique geodesic. By computer experiments, we investigate the distribution of the geometric length among all classes with a given word length in the pair of pants surface. Our experiments strongly suggest that the distribution is normal.
Let $γ$ be an essential closed curve with at most $k$ self-intersections on a surface $\mathcal{S}$ with negative Euler characteristic. In this paper, we construct a hyperbolic metric $ρ$ for which $γ$ has length at most $M \cdot \sqrt{k}$, where $M$ is a constant depending only on the topology of $\mathcal{S}$. Moreover, the injectivity radius of $ρ$ is at least $1/(2\sqrt{k})$. This yields linear upper bounds in terms of self-intersection number on the minimum degree of a cover to which $γ$ lifts as a simple closed curve (i.e. lifts simply). We also show that if $γ$ is a closed curve with le…
Let N be a manifold (with boundary) of dimension at least 3, such that its interior admits a hyperbolic metric of finite volume. We discuss the possible limits arising from sequences of relative fundamental cycles approximating the simplicial volume. As applications, we extend results of Jungreis and Calegari from closed hyperbolic to finite-volume hyperbolic manifolds: a) strict subadditivity of simplicial volume with respect to isometric glueing along geodesic surfaces, and b) nontriviality of the foliated Gromov norm for "most" foliations with two-sided branching.
Following on from work of Dunfield, we determine the fibred status of all the unknown hyperbolic 3-manifolds in the cusped census. We then find all the fibred hyperbolic 3-manifolds in the closed census and use this to find over 100 examples each of closed and cusped virtually fibred non-fibred census 3-manifolds, including the Weeks manifold. We also show that the co-rank of the fundamental group of every 3-manifold in the cusped and in the closed census is 0 or 1.
We show that every hyperbolic link complement contains closed quasi-Fuchsian surfaces. As a consequence, we obtain the result that on a hyperbolic link complement, if we remove from each cusp of the manifold a certain finite set of slopes, then all remaining Dehn fillings on the link complement yield manifolds with closed immersed incompressible surfaces.
Let N be a compact, orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with connected, totally geodesic boundary of genus 2. If N has Heegaard genus at least 5, then its volume is greater than 6.89. The proof of this result uses the following dichotomy: either N has a long return path (defined by Kojima-Miyamoto), or N has an embedded, codimension-0 submanifold X with incompressible boundary $T \sqcup \partial N$, where T is the frontier of X in N, which is not a book of I-bundles. As an application of this result, we show that if M is a closed, orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold such that H_1(M;Z_2) has dimensio…
We obtain a finite generating set for the level 2 twist subgroup of the mapping class group of a closed non-orientable surface. The generating set consists of crosscap pushing maps along non-separating two-sided simple loops and squares of Dehn twists along non-separating two-sided simple closed curves. We also prove that the level 2 twist subgroup is normally generated in the mapping class group by a crosscap pushing map along a non-separating two-sided simple loop for genus $g\geq 5$ and $g=3$. As an application, we calculate the first homology group of the level 2 twist subgroup for genus $…
We show that after generic filling along a torus boundary component of a 3-manifold, no two closed, 2-sided, essential surfaces become isotopic, and no closed, 2-sided, essential surface becomes inessential. That is, the set of essential surfaces (considered up to isotopy) survives unchanged in all suitably generic Dehn fillings. Furthermore, for all but finitely many non-generic fillings, we show that two essential surfaces can only become isotopic in a constrained way.
