An Effective Compactness Theorem for Coxeter Groups

Through highly non-constructive methods, works by Bestvina, Culler, Feighn, Morgan, Paulin, Rips, Shalen, and Thurston show that if a finitely presented group does not split over a virtually solvable subgroup, then the space of its discrete and faithful actions on hyperbolic n-space, modulo conjugation, is compact for all dimensions. Although this implies that the space of hyperbolic structures of such groups has finite diameter, the known methods do not give an explicit bound. We establish such a bound for Coxeter groups. Residual properties of 3-manifold groups I: Fibered and hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Let $p$ be a prime. In this paper, we classify the geometric 3-manifolds whose fundamental groups are virtually residually $p$. Let $M=M^3$ be a virtually fibered 3-manifold. It is well-known that $G=π_1(M)$ is residually solvable and even residually finite solvable. We prove that $G$ is always virtually residually $p$. Using recent work of Wise, we prove that every hyperbolic 3-manifold is either closed or virtually fibered and hence has a virtually residually $p$ fundamental group. On the algorithmic construction of classifying spaces and the isomorphism problem for biautomatic groups

We show that the isomorphism problem is solvable in the class of central extensions of word-hyperbolic groups, and that the isomorphism problem for biautomatic groups reduces to that for biautomatic groups with finite centre. We describe an algorithm that, given an arbitrary finite presentation of an automatic group $Γ$, will construct explicit finite models for the skeleta of $K(Γ,1)$ and hence compute the integral homology and cohomology of $Γ$.

The conjugacy problem for relatively hyperbolic groups

Solvability of the conjugacy problem for relatively hyperbolic groups was announced by Gromov [Hyperbolic groups, MSRI publications 8 (1987)]. Using the definition of Farb of a relatively hyperbolic group in the strong sense [B Farb, Relatively hyperbolic groups, Geom. Func. Anal. 8 (1998) 810-840], we prove this assertion. We conclude that the conjugacy problem is solvable for fundamental groups of complete, finite-volume, negatively curved manifolds, and for finitely generated fully residually free groups.

On the pathwidth of hyperbolic 3-manifolds

According to Mostow's celebrated rigidity theorem, the geometry of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds is already determined by their topology. Algorithmic homeomorphism of 3-manifolds as a corollary of geometrization

In this paper we prove two results, one semi-historical and the other new. The semi-historical result, which goes back to Thurston and Riley, is that the geometrization theorem implies that there is an algorithm for the homeomorphism problem for closed, oriented, triangulated 3-manifolds. We give a self-contained proof, with several variations at each stage, that uses only the statement of the geometrization theorem, basic hyperbolic geometry, and old results from combinatorial topology and computer science.
