For any closed surface $S$ of genus $g \geq 2$, we show that the deformation space of marked hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to $S$, $AH(S \times I)$, is not locally connected. This proves a conjecture of Bromberg who recently proved that the space of Kleinian punctured torus groups is not locally connected. Playing an essential role in our proof is a new version of the filling theorem that is based on the theory of cone-manifold deformations developed by Hodgson, Kerckhoff, and Bromberg.
We give a brief overview of the current state of the study of the deformation theory of Kleinian groups. The topics covered include the definition of the deformation space of a Kleinian group and of several important subspaces; a discussion of the parametrization by topological data of the components of the closure of the deformation space; the relationship between algebraic and geometric limits of sequences of Kleinian groups; and the behavior of several geometrically and analytically interesting functions on the deformation space.
We show that there exist infinitely many commensurability classes of finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds whose fundamental group contains a subgroup which is locally free but not free. The main technical tool is the fact that a collection of hyperbolic 3-manifolds of bounded volume contains infinitely many commensurability classes. The result then by an application of Thurston's hyperbolization theorem for Haken 3-manifolds.
We present examples of hyperbolizable 3-manifolds $M$ with the following property. Let $CC(π_1(M))$ denote the space of convex co-compact representations of $π_1(M)$. We show that for every $K\geq 1$ there exists a representation $ρ$ in $\bar {CC(π_1(M))}$ so that every $K$-quasiconformal deformation of $ρ$ lies in the closure of every component of $CC(π_1(M))$. The examples $M$ were discovered by Anderson and Canary.
One of the basic problems in studying topological structures of deformation spaces for Kleinian groups is to find a criterion to distinguish convergent sequences from divergent sequences. In this paper, we shall give a sufficient condition for sequences of Kleinian groups isomorphic to surface groups to diverge in the deformation spaces.
We prove that Kleinian groups whose limit sets are Cantor sets of Hausdorff dimension $<1$ are free. On the other hand we construct for any $ε>0$ examples of non-free purely hyperbolic Kleinian groups whose limit set is a Cantor set of Hausdorff dimension $<1+ε$.
In a previous paper, we constructed an explicit dynamical correspondence between certain Kleinian reflection groups and certain anti-holomorphic rational maps on the Riemann sphere. In this paper, we show that their deformation spaces share many striking similarities. We establish an analogue of Thurston's compactness theorem for critically fixed anti-rational maps. We also characterize how deformation spaces interact with each other and study the monodromy representations of the union of all deformation spaces.
Let M be a compact, hyperbolizable 3-manifold with nonempty incompressible boundary and let AH(π_1(M)) denote the space of (conjugacy classes of) discrete faithful representations of π_1(M) into PSL 2 (C). The components of the interior MP(π_1(M)) of AH(π_1(M)) (as a subset of the appropriate representation variety) are enumerated by the space A(M) of marked homeomorphism types of oriented, compact, irreducible 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to M. In this paper, we give a topological enumeration of the components of the closure of MP(π_1(M)) and hence a conjectural topological enumeration of …
We characterize sequences of Kleinian surface groups with convergent subsequences in terms of the asymptotic behavior of the ending invariants of the associated hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Asymptotic behavior of end invariants in a convergent sequence predicts the parabolic locus of the algebraic limit as well as how the algebraic limit wraps within the geometric limit under the natural locally isometric covering map.
Let $Γ$ be a 3-dimensional Kleinian punctured torus group with ccidental parabolic transformations. The deformation space of $Γ$ in the group of Möbius transformations on the 2-sphere is well-known as the Maskit slice of punctured torus groups. In this paper, we study deformations $Γ'$ of $Γ$ in the group of Möbius transformations on the 3-sphere such that $Γ'$ does not contain screw parabolic transformations. We will show that the space of the deformations is realized as a domain of 3-space $\mathbb{R}^3$, which contains the Maskit slice of punctured torus groups as a slice through a plane. F…
We consider a compact orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with a compressible boundary. Suppose that we are given a sequence of geometrically finite hyperbolic metrics whose conformal boundary structures at infinity diverge to a projective lamination. We prove that if this limit projective lamination is doubly incompressible, then the sequence has compact closure in the deformation space. As a consequence we generalise Thurston's double limit theorem and solve his conjecture on convergence of function groups affirmatively.
Consider a geometrically finite Kleinian group $G$ without parabolic or elliptic elements, with its Kleinian manifold $M=(\H^3\cup Ω_G)/G$. Suppose that for each boundary component of $M$, either a maximal and connected measured lamination in the Masur domain or a marked conformal structure is given. In this setting, we shall prove that there is an algebraic limit $Γ$ of quasi-conformal deformations of $G$ such that there is a homeomorphism $h$ from $\mathrm{Int} M$ to $\H^3/Γ$ compatible with the natural isomorphism from $G$ to $Γ$, the given laminations are unrealisable in $\H^3/Γ$, and the …
We provide an infinite family of pared manifolds whose relative deformation spaces of hyperbolic structures on these manifolds are not locally connected. This is a natural extension of the recent result of Bromberg that shows the space of Kleinian punctured torus groups is not locally connected.
The notion of i-bounded geometry generalises simultaneously bounded geometry and the geometry of punctured torus Kleinian groups. We show that the limit set of a surface Kleinian group of i-bounded geometry is locally connected by constructing a natural Cannon-Thurston map. This is an exposition of a special case of the main result of arXiv:math/0607509.
We prove the existence of Cannon-Thurston maps for simply and doubly degenerate surface Kleinian groups. As a consequence we prove that connected limit sets of finitely generated Kleinian groups are locally connected.
Let P be a locally finite circle packing in the plane invariant under a non-elementary Kleinian group Gamma and with finitely many Gamma-orbits. When Gamma is geometrically finite, we construct an explicit Borel measure on the plane which describes the asymptotic distribution of small circles in P, assuming that either the critical exponent of Gamma is strictly bigger than 1 or P does not contain an infinite bouquet of tangent circles glued at a parabolic fixed point of Gamma. Our construction also works for P invariant under a geometrically infinite group Gamma, provided Gamma admits a finite…
We prove that the deformation space AH(M) of marked hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to a fixed compact 3-manifold M with incompressible boundary is locally connected at minimally parabolic points. Moreover, spaces of Kleinian surface groups are locally connected at quasiconformally rigid points. Similar results are obtained for deformation spaces of acylindrical 3-manifolds and Bers slices.
This is a note of the author's lectures at "Advanced courses in Foliation" in the research program "Foliation", which was held at the Centre de Recerca Mathematica in the May of 2010. In this note, we discuss about the relationship between deformation of actions of Lie groups and the leafwise cohomology of the orbit foliation.
This paper gives an exposition of the authors' harmonic deformation theory for 3-dimensional hyperbolic cone-manifolds. We discuss topological applications to hyperbolic Dehn surgery as well as recent applications to Kleinian group theory. A central idea is that local rigidity results (for deformations fixing cone angles) can be turned into effective control on the deformations that do exist. This leads to precise analytic and geometric versions of the idea that hyperbolic structures with short geodesics are close to hyperbolic structures with cusps. The paper also outlines a new harmonic defo…
Thurston's ending lamination conjecture proposes that a finitely generated Kleinian group is uniquely determined (up to isometry) by the topology of its quotient and a list of invariants that describe the asymptotic geometry of its ends. We present a proof of this conjecture for punctured-torus groups. These are free two-generator Kleinian groups with parabolic commutator, which should be thought of as representations of the fundamental group of a punctured torus. As a consequence we verify the conjectural topological description of the deformation space of punctured-torus groups (including Be…
We consider the following question: Which parameters in the extension of a rational pleating ray across the boundary of $\Cal M$, the Maskit embedding of the Teichmüller space of once punctured tori correspond to a Kleinian group? Using methods of Keen and Series and Wright we prove a local result, stating that on each rational ray there is a sequence of parameters in $\overline\Bbb H\setminus\Cal M$ accumulating at the boundary point of $\Cal M$ on the ray. These are the unique parameters on the extended $p/q$ ray for which the special word $W_{p/q}$ is a primitive elliptic Möbius transformat…
We prove that the deformation space $AH(M)$ of marked hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to a fixed compact 3-manifold $M$ with incompressible boundary is locally connected at quasiconformally rigid points.
In this paper we develop a new theory of infinitesimal harmonic deformations for compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds with ``tubular boundary''. In particular, this applies to complements of tubes of radius at least $R_0 = \arctanh(1/\sqrt{3}) \approx 0.65848$ around the singular set of hyperbolic cone manifolds, removing the previous restrictions on cone angles. We then apply this to obtain a new quantitative version of Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn surgery theorem, showing that all generalized Dehn surgery coefficients outside a disc of ``uniform'' size yield hyperbolic structures. Here the size of a…
