We consider the following question: Which parameters in the extension of a rational pleating ray across the boundary of $\Cal M$, the Maskit embedding of the Teichmüller space of once punctured tori correspond to a Kleinian group? Using methods of Keen and Series and Wright we prove a local result, stating that on each rational ray there is a sequence of parameters in $\overline\Bbb H\setminus\Cal M$ accumulating at the boundary point of $\Cal M$ on the ray. These are the unique parameters on the extended $p/q$ ray for which the special word $W_{p/q}$ is a primitive elliptic Möbius transformation. We also show that the discrete groups with elliptic elements in the complement of $\overline{\Cal M}$ are boundary groups of deformation spaces of certain Kleinian groups representing a punctured torus on their invariant component.
The Bers-Greenberg theorem tells that the Teichmüller space of a Riemann surface with branch points (orbifold) depends only on the genus and the number of special points, but not on the particular ramification values. On the other hand, the Maskit embedding provides a mapping from the Teichmüller space of an orbifold, into the product of one dimensional Teichmüller spaces. In this paper we prove that there is a set of isomorphisms between one dimensional Teichmüller spaces that, when restricted to the image of the Teichmüller space of an orbifold under the Maskit embedding, provides the Bers-G…
Let $Γ$ be a 3-dimensional Kleinian punctured torus group with ccidental parabolic transformations. The deformation space of $Γ$ in the group of Möbius transformations on the 2-sphere is well-known as the Maskit slice of punctured torus groups. In this paper, we study deformations $Γ'$ of $Γ$ in the group of Möbius transformations on the 3-sphere such that $Γ'$ does not contain screw parabolic transformations. We will show that the space of the deformations is realized as a domain of 3-space $\mathbb{R}^3$, which contains the Maskit slice of punctured torus groups as a slice through a plane. F…
The Maskit embedding M of a surface Σis the space of geometrically finite groups on the boundary of quasifuchsian space for which the `top' end is homeomorphic to Σ, while the `bottom' end consists of two triply punctured spheres, the remains of Σwhen two fixed disjoint curves have been pinched. As such representations vary in the character variety, the conformal structure on the top side varies over the Teichmüller space T(Σ). We investigate M when Σis a twice punctured torus, using the method of pleating rays. Fix a projective measure class [μ] supported on closed curves on Σ. The pleating r…
The punctured solenoid $§$ is an initial object for the category of punctured surfaces with morphisms given by finite covers branched only over the punctures. The (decorated) Teichmüller space of $§$ is introduced, studied, and found to be parametrized by certain coordinates on a fixed triangulation of $§$. Furthermore, a point in the decorated Teichmüller space induces a polygonal decomposition of $§$ giving a combinatorial description of its decorated Teichmüller space itself. This is used to obtain a non-trivial set of generators of the modular group of $§$, which is presumably the main res…
We consider linear slices of the space of Kleinian once-punctured torus groups; a linear slice is obtained by fixing the value of the trace of one of the generators. The linear slice for trace 2 is called the Maskit slice. We will show that if traces converge `horocyclically' to 2 then associated linear slices converge to the Maskit slice, whereas if the traces converge `tangentially' to 2 the linear slices converge to a proper subset of the Maskit slice. This result will be also rephrased in terms of complex Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates. In addition, we will show that there is a linear slice w…
Wolf gave a homeomorphism from the Teichmüller space to the space of quadratic differentials on a closed Riemann surface by using harmonic maps. Moreover, using harmonic maps rays, he gave a compactification of the Teichmüller space and show that it coincides with the Thurston compactification. In this paper, we extend the harmonic maps compactification to the Teichmüller spaces of punctured Riemann surfaces, and show that it still coincides with the Thurston compactification.
The moduli space of lattices of $\mathbb{C}$ is a Riemann surface of finite hyperbolic area with the square lattice as an origin. We select a lattice from the induced uniform distribution and calculate the statistics of the Teichmüller distance to the origin. This in turn identifies distribution of the distance in Teichmüller space to the central "square" punctured torus in the moduli space of punctured tori. There are singularities in this p.d.f. arising from the topology of the moduli space. We also consider the statistics of the distance in Teichmüller space to the rectangular punctured tor…
We study two $2$-dimensional Teichmüller spaces of surfaces with boundary and marked points, namely, the pentagon and the punctured triangle. We show that their geometry is quite different from Teichmüller spaces of closed surfaces. Indeed, both spaces are exhausted by regular convex geodesic polygons with a fixed number of sides, and their geodesics diverge at most linearly.
We consider complex Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates on the quasi-Fuchsian space of punctured tori. These coordinates arise from a generalisation of Kra's plumbing construction and are related to earthquakes on Teichmueller space. They also allow us to interpolate between two coordinate systems on Teichmueller space, namely the classical Fuchsian space with Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates and the Maskit embedding. We also show how they relate to the pleating coordinates of Keen and Series.
We construct new coordinates for the Teichmüller space Teich of a punctured torus into $\bold{R} \times\bold{R}^+$. The coordinates depend on the representation of Teich as a space of marked Kleinian groups $G_μ$ that depend holomorphically on a parameter $μ$ varying in a simply connected domain in $\bold{C}$. They describe the geometry of the hyperbolic manifold $\bold{H}^3/G_μ$; they reflect exactly the visual patterns one sees in the limit sets of the groups $G_μ$; and they are directly computable from the generators of $G_μ$.
This article was born as a generalisation of the analysis made by Series, where she made the first attempt to plot a deformation space of Kleinian group of more than 1 complex dimension. We use the Top Terms' Relationship proved by the author and Series to determine the asymptotic directions of pleating rays in the Maskit embedding of a hyperbolic surface S as the bending measure of the `top' surface in the boundary of the convex core tends to zero. The Maskit embedding M of a surface S is the space of geometrically finite groups on the boundary of quasifuchsian space for which the `top' end i…
Hamenstädt gave a parametrization of the Teichmüller space of punctured surfaces such that the image under this parametrization is the interior of a polytope. In this paper, we study the Hilbert metric on the Teichmüller space of punctured surfaces based on this parametrization. We prove that every earthquake ray is an almost geodesic under the Hilbert metric.
After fixing a marking (V, W) of a quasifuchsian punctured torus group G, the complex length l_V and the complex twist tau_V,W parameters define a holomorphic embedding of the quasifuchsian space QF of punctured tori into C^2. It is called the complex Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates of QF. For a complex number c, let Q_gamma,c be the affine subspace of C^2 defined by the linear equation l_V=c. Then we can consider the linear slice L of QF by QF \cap Q_gamma,c which is a holomorphic slice of QF. For any positive real value c, L always contains the so called Bers-Maskit slice BM_gamma,c. In this pap…
The Dynnikov coordinate system puts global coordinates on the boundary of Teichmüller space of an $n$--punctured disk. We survey the Dynnikov coordinate system, and investigate how we use this coordinate system to study pseudo--Anosov braids making use of results from Thurston's theory on surface homeomorphisms.
We prove the identity $$ \prod_γ\left(\frac{e^{l(γ)}+1}{e^{l(γ)}-1}\right)^{2h}=\exp\left(\frac{l_1+l_2+l_3}{2}\right), $$ (or $$ \prod_γ\left(\frac{t(γ)^2}{t(γ)^2-4}\right)^h=\frac{t_1+\sqrt{t_1^2-4}}{2}\cdot\frac{t_2+\sqrt{t_2^2-4}}{2}\cdot\frac{t_3+\sqrt{t_3^2-4}}{2} $$ in trace coordinates), where the product is over all simple closed geodesics on the once-punctured torus, $l(γ)=2\operatorname{arccosh}(t(γ)/2)$ is the length of the geodesic, and $l_i$ ($t_i$) are the lengths (traces) of any triple of simple geodesics $\{γ_i\}$ intersecting at a single point. The exponent $h=h(γ;\{γ_i\})$ i…
We consider the quantum Teichmuller space of the punctured surface introduced by Chekhov-Fock-Kashaev, and formalize it as a noncommutative deformation of the space of algebraic functions on the Teichmuller space of the surface. In order to apply it in 3-dimensional topology, we put more attention to the details involving small surfaces.
For a given $ε>0$, we show that there exist two finite index subgroups of $PSL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ which are $(1+ε)$-quasisymmetrically conjugated and the conjugation homeomorphism is not conformal. This implies that for any $ε>0$ there are two finite regular covers of the Modular once punctured torus $T_0$ (or just the Modular torus) and a $(1+ε)$-quasiconformal between them that is not homotopic to a conformal map. As an application of the above results, we show that the orbit of the basepoint in the Teichmüller space $T(§)$ of the punctured solenoid $§$ under the action of the corresponding Modu…
The central extension of the mapping class groups of punctured surfaces of finite type that arises in quantum Teichmüller theory is 12 times the Meyer class plus the Euler classes of the punctures. This is analogous to the result obtained in \cite{FS} for the Thompson groups.
In the quantum Teichmuller theory, based on Penner coordinates, the mapping class groups of punctured surfaces are represented projectively. The case of a genus three surface with one puncture is worked out explicitly. The projective factor is calculated. It is given by the exponential of the Liouville central charge.
We introduce a certain type of representations for the quantum Teichmuller space of a punctured surface, which we call local representations. We show that, up to finitely many choices, these purely algebraic representations are classified by classical geometric data. We also investigate the family of intertwining operators associated to such a representations. In particular, we use these intertwiners to construct a natural fiber bundle over the Teichmuller space and its quotient under the action of the mapping class group. This construction also offers a convenient framework to exhibit invaria…
We investigate the representation theory of the polynomial core of the quantum Teichmuller space of a punctured surface S. This is a purely algebraic object, closely related to the combinatorics of the simplicial complex of ideal cell decompositions of S. Our main result is that irreducible finite-dimensional representations of this polynomial core are classified, up to finitely many choices, by group homomorphisms from the fundamental group of the surface to the isometry group of the hyperbolic 3--space. We exploit this connection between algebra and hyperbolic geometry to exhibit new invaria…
This paper extends the decorated Teichmüller theory developed before for punctured surfaces to the setting of ``bordered'' surfaces, i.e., surfaces with boundary, and there is non-trivial new structure discovered. The main new result identifies the arc complex of a bordered surface up to proper homotopy equivalence with a certain quotient of the moduli space, namely, the quotient by the natural action of the positive reals by homothety on the hyperbolic lengths of geodesic boundary components. One tool in the proof is a homeomorphism between two versions of a ``decorated'' moduli space for bor…
Let M be the moduli space of irreducible flat PSL(2,R) connections on a punctured surface of finite type with parabolic holonomies around punctures. By using a notion of admissibility of an ideal arc, M is covered by dense open subsets associated to ideal triangulations of the surface. A principal bundle over M is constructed which, when restricted to the Teichmuller component of M, is isomorphic to the decorated Teichmuller space of Penner. The construction gives a generalization to M of Penner's coordinates for the Teichmuller space.
We define an associative algebra AS_h(S) generated by framed arcs and links over a punctured surface S which is a quantization of the Poisson algebra C(S) of arcs and curves on S. We then construct a Poisson algebra homomorphism from C(S) to the space of smooth functions on the decorated Teichmuller space endowed with the Weil-Petersson Poisson structure. The construction relies on a collection of geodesic lengths identities in hyperbolic geometry which generalize Penner's Ptolemy relation, the trace identities and Wolpert's cosine formula. As a consequence, we derive an explicit formula for t…
The stated skein algebra of a punctured bordered surface (or equivalently, a marked surface) is a generalization of the well-known Kauffman bracket skein algebra of unmarked surfaces and can be considered as an extension of the quantum special linear group $\mathcal{O}_{q^2}(SL_2)$ from a bigon to general surfaces. We show that the stated skein algebra of a punctured bordered surface with non-empty boundary can be embedded into quantum tori in two different ways. The first embedding can be considered as a quantization of the map expressing the trace of a closed curve in terms of the shear coor…
We study a particular class of representations from the fundamental groups of punctured spheres $Σ_{0,n}$ to the group $\text{PSL} (2,\mathbb R)$ (and their moduli spaces), that we call \emph{super-maximal}. Super-maximal representations are shown to be \emph{totally non hyperbolic}, in the sense that every simple closed curve is mapped to a non hyperbolic element. They are also shown to be \emph{geometrizable} (appart from the reducible super-maximal ones) in the following very strong sense : for any element of the Teichmüller space $\mathcal T_{0,n}$, there is a unique holomorphic equivarian…
We describe a family of representations of $π_1(Σ)$ in PU(2,1), where $Σ$ is a hyperbolic Riemann surface with at least one deleted point. This family is obtained by a bending process associated to an ideal triangulation of $Σ$. We give an explicit description of this family by describing a coordinates system in the spirit of shear coordinates on the Teichmüller space. We identify within this family new examples of discrete, faithful and type-preserving representations of $π_1(Σ)$. In turn, we obtain a 1-parameter family of embeddings of the Teichmüller space of $Σ$ in the PU(2,1)-representati…
We construct a covering of Culler-Vogtmann Outer space by the Teichmuller spaces of punctured surfaces. By considering the equivariant homology for the action of Out(F_n) on this covering, we construct a spectral sequence converging to the homology of Out(F_n) that has E^1 terms given by the homology of mapping class groups and groups that are, up to finite index, subgroups of mapping class groups. This spectral sequence can be seen as encoding all of the information of how the homology of Out(F_n) is related to the homology of mapping class groups and their subgroups.
