We investigate the representation theory of the polynomial core of the quantum Teichmuller space of a punctured surface S. This is a purely algebraic object, closely related to the combinatorics of the simplicial complex of ideal cell decompositions of S. Our main result is that irreducible finite-dimensional representations of this polynomial core are classified, up to finitely many choices, by group homomorphisms from the fundamental group of the surface to the isometry group of the hyperbolic 3--space. We exploit this connection between algebra and hyperbolic geometry to exhibit new invariants of diffeomorphisms of S.
The affine diffeomorphism group $\mathrm{Aff}(S,q)$ of a half-translation surface $(S,q)$ comprise the self-diffeomorphisms with constant differential away from the singularities. This group coincides with the stabiliser of the associated Teichmüller disc under the action of the mapping class group on Teichmüller space. We prove that any finitely generated subgroup of $\mathrm{Aff}(S,q)$ is undistorted in the mapping class group. We also show that the systole map restricted to the associated electrified Nielsen core in the Teichmüller disc is a quasi-isometric embedding into the curve complex.
An earlier article with Francis Bonahon introduced new invariants for pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphisms of surface, based on the representation theory of the quantum Teichmuller space. We explicity compute these quantum hyperbolic invariants in the case of the 1-puncture torus and the 4-puncture sphere.
Thurston obtained a classification of individual surface homeomorphisms via the dynamics of the corresponding mapping class elements on Teichmüller space. In this paper we present certain extended versions of this, first, to random products of homeomorphisms and second, to holomorphic self-maps of Teichmüller spaces.
We introduce a certain type of representations for the quantum Teichmuller space of a punctured surface, which we call local representations. We show that, up to finitely many choices, these purely algebraic representations are classified by classical geometric data. We also investigate the family of intertwining operators associated to such a representations. In particular, we use these intertwiners to construct a natural fiber bundle over the Teichmuller space and its quotient under the action of the mapping class group. This construction also offers a convenient framework to exhibit invaria…
We show that the reduced quantum hyperbolic invariants of pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphisms of punctured surfaces are intertwiners of local representations of the quantum Teichmüller spaces. We characterize them as the only intertwiners that satisfy certain natural cut-and-paste operations of topological quantum field theories and such that their traces define invariants of mapping tori.
In the first part of the paper we describe the complex geometry of the universal Teichmüller space $\mathcal T$, which may be realized as an open subset in the complex Banach space of holomorphic quadratic differentials in the unit disc. The quotient $\mathcal S$ of the diffeomorphism group of the circle modulo Möbius transformations may be treated as a smooth part of $\mathcal T$. In the second part we consider the quantization of universal Teichmüller space $\mathcal T$. We explain first how to quantize the smooth part $\mathcal S$ by embedding it into a Hilbert-Schmidt Siegel disc. This qua…
We study the geometry of horospheres in Teichmüller space of Riemann surfaces of genus g with n punctures, where $3g-3+n\geq 2$. We show that every $C^1$-diffeomorphism of Teichmüller space to itself that preserves horospheres is an element of the extended mapping class group. Using the relation between horospheres and metric balls, we obtain a new proof of Royden's Theorem that the isometry group of the Teichmüller metric is the extended mapping class group.
In this paper we prove that for all $n=4k-2$, $k\ge2$ there exists a closed smooth complex hyperbolic manifold $M$ with real dimension $n$ having non-trivial $π_1(\mathcal{T}^{<0}(M))$. $\mathcal{T}^{<0}(M)$ denotes the Teichmüller space of all negatively curved Riemannian metrics on $M$, which is the topological quotient of the space of all negatively curved metrics modulo the space of self-diffeomorphisms of $M$ that are homotopic to the identity.
The Kashaev invariants of 3-manifolds are based on $6j$-symbols from the representation theory of the Weyl algebra, a Hopf algebra corresponding to the Borel subalgebra of $U_q(sl(2,\C))$. In this paper, we show that Kashaev's $6j$-symbols are intertwining operators of local representations of quantum Teichmüller spaces. This relates Kashaev's work with the theory of quantum Teichmüller space, which was developed by Chekhov-Fock, Kashaev and continued by Bonahon-Liu.
In \cite{rigidity}, Luo introduced a $ψ_λ$ edge invariant which turns out to be a coordinate of the Teichmüller space of a surface with boundary. And he proved that for $λ\geq 0$, the image of the Teichmüller space under $ψ_λ$ edge invariant coordinate is an open cell. In this paper we verify his conjecture that for $λ<0$, the image of the Teichmüller space is a bounded convex polytope.
We show that any element of the universal Teichmüller space is realized by a unique minimal Lagrangian diffeomorphism from the hyperbolic plane to itself. The proof uses maximal surfaces in the 3-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. We show that, in $AdS^{n+1}$, any subset $E$ of the boundary at infinity which is the boundary at infinity of a space-like hypersurface bounds a maximal space-like hypersurface. In $AdS^3$, if $E$ is the graph of a quasi-symmetric homeomorphism, then this maximal surface is unique, and it has negative sectional curvature. As a by-product, we find a simple characteriza…
In arXiv:0707.2151 the authors introduced the theory of local representations of the quantum Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}^q_S$ ($q$ being a fixed primitive $N$-th root of $(-1)^{N + 1}$) and they studied the behaviour of the intertwining operators in this theory. One of the main results [Theorem 20, arXiv:0707.2151] was the possibility to select one distinguished operator (up to scalar multiplication) for every choice of a surface $S$, ideal triangulations $λ, λ'$ and isomorphic local representations $ρ, ρ'$, requiring that the whole family of operators verifies certain Fusion and Compositio…
Extremal length is an important conformal invariant on Riemann surface. It is closely related to the geometry of Teichmuller metric on Teichmuller space. By identifying extremal length functions with energy of harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces to $\mathbb{R}$-trees, we study the second variation of extremal length functions along Weil-Petersson geodesics. We show that the extremal length of any measured foliation is a pluri-subharmonic function on Teichmuller space.
A family of coordinates $ψ_h$ for the Teichmüller space of a compact surface with boundary was introduced in \cite{l2}. In the work \cite{m1}, Mondello showed that the coordinate $ψ_0$ can be used to produce a natural cell decomposition of the Teichmüller space invariant under the action of the mapping class group. In this paper, we show that the similar result also works for all other coordinate $ψ_h$ for any $h \geq 0$.
Landry, Minsky and Taylor [LMT] introduced two polynomial invariants of veering triangulations -- the taut polynomial and the veering polynomial. We give algorithms to compute these invariants. In their definition [LMT] use only the upper track of the veering triangulation, while we consider both the upper and the lower track. We prove that the lower and the upper taut polynomials are equal. However, we show that there are veering triangulations whose lower and upper veering polynomials are different. [LMT] related the Teichmüller polynomial of a fibred face of the Thurston norm ball with the …
Royden proved that any isometry of Teichmuller space in the Teichmuller metric must be an element of the extended mapping class group M(S). He also proved that the Teichmuller metric is not symmetric at any point. In this paper we give extensions of Royden's theorems from the Teichmuller metric to an arbitrary complete, finite covolume, M(S)-invariant Finsler (e.g. Riemannian) metric on Teichmuller space. In particular this gives a new mechanism behind Royden's original theorem.
We study the dynamics of the Teichmuller flow in the moduli space of Abelian differentials (and more generally, its restriction to any connected component of a stratum). We show that the (Masur-Veech) absolutely continuous invariant probability measure is exponentially mixing for the class of Holder observables. A geometric consequence is that the $\SL(2,\R)$ action in the moduli space has a spectral gap.
The punctured solenoid $§$ is an initial object for the category of punctured surfaces with morphisms given by finite covers branched only over the punctures. The (decorated) Teichmüller space of $§$ is introduced, studied, and found to be parametrized by certain coordinates on a fixed triangulation of $§$. Furthermore, a point in the decorated Teichmüller space induces a polygonal decomposition of $§$ giving a combinatorial description of its decorated Teichmüller space itself. This is used to obtain a non-trivial set of generators of the modular group of $§$, which is presumably the main res…
We consider harmonic diffeomorphisms to a fixed hyperbolic target $Y$, from a family of domain Riemann surfaces degenerating along a Teichmüller ray. We use the work of Minsky to show that there is a limiting harmonic map from the conformal limit of the Teichmüller ray, to a crowned hyperbolic surface. The target surface is the metric completion of the complement of a geodesic lamination on $Y$. The conformal limit is obtained by attaching half-planes and cylinders to the critical graph of the holomorphic quadratic differential determining the ray. As an application, we provide a new proof of …
In earlier work, the authors introduced a conjecture which, for an orientation-preserving diffeomorphism $φ\colon S \to S$ of a surface, connects a certain quantum invariant of $φ$ with the hyperbolic volume of its mapping torus $M_φ$. This article provides a proof of this conjecture in the simplest case where it applies, namely when the surface $S$ is the one-puncture torus and the mapping torus $M_φ$ is the complement of the figure-eight knot.
We derive generalizations of McShane's identity for higher ranked surface group representations by studying a family of mapping class group invariant functions introduced by Goncharov and Shen which generalize the notion of horocycle lengths. In particular, we obtain McShane-type identities for finite-area cusped convex real projective surfaces by generalizing the Birman--Series geodesic scarcity theorem. More generally, we establish McShane-type identities for positive surface group representations with loxodromic boundary monodromy, as well as McShane-type inequalities for general rank posit…
In this paper, we study connected components of strata of the space of quadratic differentials lying over $\T_g$. We use certain general properties of sections of line bundles to put a upper bound on the number of connected components, and a generalized version of the Gauss map as an invariant to put a lower bound on the number of such components. For strata with sufficiently many zeroes of the same order we can state precisely the number of components.
We use a 1-parameter version of gauge theory to investigate the topology of the diffeomorphism group of 4-manifolds. A polynomial invariant, analogous to the Donaldson polynomial, is defined, and is used to show that the diffeomorphism group of certain simply-connected 4-manifolds has infinitely generated π_0.
The first part of this paper surveys several characterizations of Teichmüller space as a subset of the space of representation of the fundamental group of a surface into PSL(2,R). Special emphasis is put on (bounded) cohomological invariants which generalize when PSL(2,R) is replaced by a Lie group of Hermitian type. The second part discusses underlying structures of the two families of higher Teichmüller spaces, namely the space of maximal representations for Lie groups of Hermitian type and the space of Hitchin representations or positive representations for split real simple Lie groups.
The Kashaev-Murakami-Murakami Volume Conjecture connects the hyperbolic volume of a knot complement to the asymptotics of certain evaluations of the colored Jones polynomials of the knot. We introduce a closely related conjecture for diffeomorphisms of surfaces, backed up by numerical evidence. The conjecture involves isomorphisms between certain representations of the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of the surface, and the bulk of the article is devoted to the development of explicit methods to compute these isomorphisms. These combinatorial and algebraic techniques are exploited in two subseq…
We calculate the Euler characteristics of all of the Teichmuller curves in the moduli space of genus two Riemann surfaces which are generated by holomorphic one-forms with a single double zero. These curves can all be embedded in Hilbert modular surfaces and our main result is that the Euler characteristic of a Teichmuller curve is proportional to the Euler characteristic of the Hilbert modular surface on which it lies. The idea is to use techniques from algebraic geometry to calculate the fundamental classes of these Teichmuller curves in certain compactifications of the Hilbert modular surfa…
We study the space of positive scalar curvature (psc) metrics on a 4-manifold, and give examples of simply connected manifolds for which it is disconnected. These examples imply that concordance of psc metrics does not imply isotopy of such metrics. This is demonstrated using a modification of the 1-parameter Seiberg-Witten invariants which we introduced in earlier work. The invariant shows that the diffeomorphism group of the underlying 4-manifold is disconnected. We also study the moduli space of positive scalar curvature metrics modulo diffeomorphism, and give examples to show that this spa…
We consider the following question: Which parameters in the extension of a rational pleating ray across the boundary of $\Cal M$, the Maskit embedding of the Teichmüller space of once punctured tori correspond to a Kleinian group? Using methods of Keen and Series and Wright we prove a local result, stating that on each rational ray there is a sequence of parameters in $\overline\Bbb H\setminus\Cal M$ accumulating at the boundary point of $\Cal M$ on the ray. These are the unique parameters on the extended $p/q$ ray for which the special word $W_{p/q}$ is a primitive elliptic Möbius transformat…
For a non-uniform lattice in SL(2,R), we consider excursions in cusp neighborhoods of a random geodesic on the corresponding finite area hyperbolic surface or orbifold. We prove a strong law for a certain partial sum involving these excursions. This generalizes a theorem of Diamond and Vaaler for continued fractions. In the Teichmuller setting, we consider invariant measures for the SL(2,R) action on the moduli spaces of quadratic differentials. By the work of Eskin and Mirzakhani, these measures are supported on affine invariant submanifolds of a stratum of quadratic differentials. For a Teic…
An area-preserving diffeomorphism of an annulus has an "action function" which measures how the diffeomorphism distorts curves. The average value of the action function over the annulus is known as the Calabi invariant of the diffeomorphism, while the average value of the action function over a periodic orbit of the diffeomorphism is the mean action of the orbit. If an area-preserving annulus diffeomorphism is a rotation near the boundary of the annulus, and if its Calabi invariant is less than the maximum boundary value of the action function, then we show that the infimum of the mean action …
We establish the existence of a pair of exotic surfaces in a punctured $K3$ which remains exotic after one external stabilization and have diffeomorphic complements. A key ingredient in the proof is a vanishing theorem of the family Bauer--Furuta invariant for diffeomorphisms on a large family of spin 4-manifolds, which is proved using the tom Dieck splitting theorem in equivariant stable homotopy theory. In particular, we prove that the $S^{1}$-equivariant family Bauer--Furuta invariant of any orientation-preserving diffeomorphism on $S^{4}$ is trivial and that the $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-equivaria…
Some connected components of a moduli space are mundane in the sense that they are distinguished only by obvious topological invariants or have no special characteristics. Others are more alluring and unusual either because they are not detected by primary invariants, or because they have special geometric significance, or both. In this paper we describe new examples of such `exotic' components in moduli spaces of SO(p,q)-Higgs bundles on closed Riemann surfaces or, equivalently, moduli spaces of surface group representations into the Lie group SO(p,q). Furthermore, we discuss how these exotic…
