Some new behaviour in the deformation theory of Kleinian groups

We present examples of hyperbolizable 3-manifolds $M$ with the following property. Let $CC(π_1(M))$ denote the space of convex co-compact representations of $π_1(M)$. We show that for every $K\geq 1$ there exists a representation $ρ$ in $\bar {CC(π_1(M))}$ so that every $K$-quasiconformal deformation of $ρ$ lies in the closure of every component of $CC(π_1(M))$. The examples $M$ were discovered by Anderson and Canary.

A brief survey of the deformation theory of Kleinian groups

We give a brief overview of the current state of the study of the deformation theory of Kleinian groups. The topics covered include the definition of the deformation space of a Kleinian group and of several important subspaces; a discussion of the parametrization by topological data of the components of the closure of the deformation space; the relationship between algebraic and geometric limits of sequences of Kleinian groups; and the behavior of several geometrically and analytically interesting functions on the deformation space.

Deformation spaces of Kleinian surface groups are not locally connected

For any closed surface $S$ of genus $g \geq 2$, we show that the deformation space of marked hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to $S$, $AH(S \times I)$, is not locally connected. This proves a conjecture of Bromberg who recently proved that the space of Kleinian punctured torus groups is not locally connected. Playing an essential role in our proof is a new version of the filling theorem that is based on the theory of cone-manifold deformations developed by Hodgson, Kerckhoff, and Bromberg.

Divergent sequences of Kleinian groups

One of the basic problems in studying topological structures of deformation spaces for Kleinian groups is to find a criterion to distinguish convergent sequences from divergent sequences. In this paper, we shall give a sufficient condition for sequences of Kleinian groups isomorphic to surface groups to diverge in the deformation spaces.

On Deformation Space Analogies between Kleinian Reflection Groups and Antiholomorphic Rational Maps

In a previous paper, we constructed an explicit dynamical correspondence between certain Kleinian reflection groups and certain anti-holomorphic rational maps on the Riemann sphere. In this paper, we show that their deformation spaces share many striking similarities. We establish an analogue of Thurston's compactness theorem for critically fixed anti-rational maps. We also characterize how deformation spaces interact with each other and study the monodromy representations of the union of all deformation spaces.

An extension of the Maskit slice for 4-dimensional Kleinian groups

Let $Γ$ be a 3-dimensional Kleinian punctured torus group with ccidental parabolic transformations. The deformation space of $Γ$ in the group of Möbius transformations on the 2-sphere is well-known as the Maskit slice of punctured torus groups. In this paper, we study deformations $Γ'$ of $Γ$ in the group of Möbius transformations on the 3-sphere such that $Γ'$ does not contain screw parabolic transformations. Convergence of freely decomposable Kleinian groups

We consider a compact orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with a compressible boundary. Suppose that we are given a sequence of geometrically finite hyperbolic metrics whose conformal boundary structures at infinity diverge to a projective lamination. We prove that if this limit projective lamination is doubly incompressible, then the sequence has compact closure in the deformation space. As a consequence we generalise Thurston's double limit theorem and solve his conjecture on convergence of function groups affirmatively.

Constructing geometrically infinite groups on boundaries of deformation spaces

Consider a geometrically finite Kleinian group $G$ without parabolic or elliptic elements, with its Kleinian manifold $M=(\H^3\cup Ω_G)/G$. Examples of relative deformation spaces that are not locally connected

We provide an infinite family of pared manifolds whose relative deformation spaces of hyperbolic structures on these manifolds are not locally connected. This is a natural extension of the recent result of Bromberg that shows the space of Kleinian punctured torus groups is not locally connected.

Local topology in deformation spaces of hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We prove that the deformation space AH(M) of marked hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to a fixed compact 3-manifold M with incompressible boundary is locally connected at minimally parabolic points. Moreover, spaces of Kleinian surface groups are locally connected at quasiconformally rigid points. Similar results are obtained for deformation spaces of acylindrical 3-manifolds and Bers slices.

Harmonic deformations of hyperbolic 3-manifolds

This paper gives an exposition of the authors' harmonic deformation theory for 3-dimensional hyperbolic cone-manifolds. We discuss topological applications to hyperbolic Dehn surgery as well as recent applications to Kleinian group theory. The classification of punctured-torus groups

The shape of hyperbolic Dehn surgery space

In this paper we develop a new theory of infinitesimal harmonic deformations for compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds with ``tubular boundary''. In particular, this applies to complements of tubes of radius at least $R_0 = \arctanh(1/\sqrt{3}) \approx 0.65848$ around the singular set of hyperbolic cone manifolds, removing the previous restrictions on cone angles. Yang-Baxter deformations and rack cohomology

Every rack $Q$ provides a set-theoretic solution $c_Q$ of the Yang-Baxter equation. This article examines the deformation theory of $c_Q$ within the space of Yang-Baxter operators over a ring $\A$, a problem initiated by Freyd and Yetter in 1989.
