We show that a Kleinian surface group, or hyperbolic 3-manifold with a cusp-preserving homotopy-equivalence to a surface, has bounded geometry if and only if there is an upper bound on an associated collection of coefficients that depend only on its end invariants. Bounded geometry is a positive lower bound on the lengths of closed geodesics. When the surface is a once-punctured torus, the coefficients coincide with the continued fraction coefficients associated to the ending laminations. Applications include an improvement to the bounded geometry versions of Thurston's ending lamination conjecture, and of Bers' density conjecture.
In this article we survey and describe various aspects of the geometry and arithmetic of Kleinian groups - discrete nonelementary groups of isometries of hyperbolic $3$-space. In particular we make a detailed study of two-generator groups and discuss the classification of the arithmetic generalised triangle groups (and their near relatives). This work is mainly based around my collaborations over the last two decades with Fred Gehring and Colin Maclachlan, both of whom passed away in 2012. There are many others involved as well. Over the last few decades the theory of Kleinian groups has flour…
Any action of a group $Γ$ on $\mathbb H^3$ by isometries yields a class in degree three bounded cohomology by pulling back the volume cocycle to $Γ$. We prove that the bounded cohomology of finitely generated Kleinian groups without parabolic elements distinguishes the asymptotic geometry of geometrically infinite ends of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. That is, if two homotopy equivalent hyperbolic manifolds with infinite volume and without parabolic cusps have different geometrically infinite end invariants, then they define a $2$ dimensional subspace of bounded cohomology. Our techniques apply to…
We examine the internal geometry of a Kleinian surface group and its relations to the asymptotic geometry of its ends, using the combinatorial structure of the complex of curves on the surface. Our main results give necessary conditions for the Kleinian group to have `bounded geometry' (lower bounds on injectivity radius) in terms of a sequence of coefficients (subsurface projections) computed using the ending invariants of the group and the complex of curves. These results are directly analogous to those obtained in the case of punctured-torus surface groups. In that setting the ending invari…
The notion of i-bounded geometry generalises simultaneously bounded geometry and the geometry of punctured torus Kleinian groups. We show that the limit set of a surface Kleinian group of i-bounded geometry is locally connected by constructing a natural Cannon-Thurston map. This is an exposition of a special case of the main result of arXiv:math/0607509.
We show that there exist infinitely many commensurability classes of finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds whose fundamental group contains a subgroup which is locally free but not free. The main technical tool is the fact that a collection of hyperbolic 3-manifolds of bounded volume contains infinitely many commensurability classes. The result then by an application of Thurston's hyperbolization theorem for Haken 3-manifolds.
This is the second part of the works on Hausdorff dimensions of Schottky groups. It has been conjectured that the Hausdorff dimensions of nonclassical Schottky groups are strictly bounded from below. In this second part of our works we provide a resolution of this conjecture, we prove that there exists a universal positive number $λ>0$, such that any finitely-generated non-elementary Kleinian groups with limit set of Hausdorff dimension $<λ$ are classical Schottky groups. We will generalize our previous technologies given in \cite{HS} to prove our general result. Our result can be consider as …
In this paper, we classify completely hyperbolic 3-manifolds corresponding to geometric limits of Kleinian surface groups isomorphic to $π_1(S)$ for a finite-type hyperbolic surface $S$. In the first of the three main theorems, we construct bi-Lipschitz model manifolds for such hyperbolic 3-manifolds, which have a structure called brick decomposition and are embedded in $S \times (0,1)$. In the second theorem, we show that conversely, any such model manifold admitting a brick decomposition with reasonable conditions is bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic to a hyperbolic manifold corresponding to some ge…
We prove that every finitely presentable group G arises as the fundamental group of an orientable 3-complex obtained from a hyperbolic link complement, by coning each boundary torus of the link exterior to a distinct point. We define the closed-link-genus, clg(G), of any finitely presentable group G, which completely characterizes fundamental groups of closed orientable 3-manifolds: clg(G)=0 if and only if G is the fundamental group of a closed orientable 3-manifold. Moreover clg(G) gives an upper bound for the concept `genus(G)' of genus defined earlier by Aitchison and Reeves, and in turn is…
In earlier work we introduced geometrically natural probability measures on the group of all Möbius transformations in order to study "random" groups of Möbius transformations, random surfaces, and in particular random two-generator groups, that is groups where the generators are selected randomly, with a view to estimating the likely-hood that such groups are discrete and then to make calculations of the expectation of their associated parameters, geometry and topology. In this paper we continue that study and identify the precise probability that a Fuchsian group generated by two parabolic M…
Thurston's ending lamination conjecture proposes that a finitely generated Kleinian group is uniquely determined (up to isometry) by the topology of its quotient and a list of invariants that describe the asymptotic geometry of its ends. We present a proof of this conjecture for punctured-torus groups. These are free two-generator Kleinian groups with parabolic commutator, which should be thought of as representations of the fundamental group of a punctured torus. As a consequence we verify the conjectural topological description of the deformation space of punctured-torus groups (including Be…
For a compact, oriented, hyperbolic $n$-manifold $(M,g)$, realised as $M= Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}^{n}$ where $Γ$ is a torsion-free cocompact subgroup of $SO(n,1)$, we establish and study a relationship between differential geometric cohomology on $M$ and algebraic invariants of the group $Γ$. In particular for $\mathbb{F}$ an irreducible $SO(n,1)$-module, we show that the group cohomology with coefficients $H^{\bullet}(Γ, \mathbb{F})$ is isomorphic to the cohomology of an appropriate projective BGG complex on $M$. This yields the geometric interpretation that $H^{\bullet}(Γ, \mathbb{F})$ parame…
We prove a continuity property for ending invariants of convergent sequences of Kleinian surface groups. We also analyze the bounded curve sets of such groups and show that their projections to non-annular subsurfaces lie a bounded Hausdorff distance from geodesics joining the projections of the ending invariants.
We explain some interesting relations in the degree three bounded cohomology of surface groups. Specifically, we show that if two faithful Kleinian surface group representations are quasi-isometric, then their bounded fundamental classes are the same in bounded cohomology. This is novel in the setting that one end is degenerate, while the other end is geometrically finite. We also show that a difference of two singly degenerate classes with bounded geometry is boundedly cohomologous to a doubly degenerate class, which has a nice geometric interpretation. Finally, we explain that the above rela…
We prove that a Kleinian group $G$ acting upon $\mathbb{H}^{n}$ admits a non-constant $G$-automorphic function, even if it has torsion elements, provided that the orders of the elliptic (torsion) elements are uniformly bounded. This is accomplished by developing a technique for mashing distinct fat triangulations while preserving fatness.
A Kleinian group $Γ< \mathrm{Isom}(\mathbb H^3)$ is called convex cocompact if any orbit of $Γ$ in $\mathbb H^3$ is quasiconvex or, equivalently, $Γ$ acts cocompactly on the convex hull of its limit set in $\partial \mathbb H^3$. Subgroup stability is a strong quasiconvexity condition in finitely generated groups which is intrinsic to the geometry of the ambient group and generalizes the classical quasiconvexity condition above. Importantly, it coincides with quasiconvexity in hyperbolic groups and convex cocompactness in mapping class groups. Using the Morse boundary, we develop an equivalent…
We construct arithmetic Kleinian groups that are profinitely rigid in the absolute sense: each is distinguished from all other finitely generated, residually finite groups by its set of finite quotients. The Bianchi group $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z}[ω])$ with $ω^2+ω+1=0$ is rigid in this sense. Other examples include the non-uniform lattice of minimal co-volume in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ and the fundamental group of the Weeks manifold (the closed hyperbolic $3$-manifold of minimal volume).
We determine C-special subgroups of the Bianchi groups of index bounded above by 120 by effectivising the arguments of Agol-Long-Reid. These subgroups are congruence of level 2 or 4 and retract to the free group on two generators. As a consequence, we find a C-special 20-sheeted cover of the figure-eight knot complement. We also determine C-special congruence subgroups for a family of cocompact arithmetic Kleinian groups.
Let F be a surface and suppose that ϕ: F -> F is a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism fixing a puncture p of F. The mapping torus M = M_ϕis hyperbolic and contains a maximal cusp C about the puncture p. We show that the area (and height) of the cusp torus bounding C is equal to the stable translation distance of ϕacting on the arc complex A(F,p), up to an explicitly bounded multiplicative error. Our proof relies on elementary facts about the hyperbolic geometry of pleated surfaces. In particular, the proof of this theorem does not use any deep results in Teichmueller theory, Kleinian group theory, or…
This paper continues a geometric study of Harvey's Complex of Curves, whose ultimate goal is to apply the theory of hyperbolic spaces and groups to algorithmic questions for the Mapping Class Group and geometric properties of Kleinian representations. The authors' previous result that the complex is delta-hyperbolic was hard to apply because the complex is not locally finite; in this paper some tools are developed for overcoming this problem, and a combinatorial mechanism introduced which describes sequences of elementary moves in the graph of markings on a surface. These tools are applied to …
We use ending laminations for Weil-Petersson geodesics to establish that bounded geometry is equivalent to bounded combinatorics for Weil-Petersson geodesic segments, rays, and lines. Further, a more general notion of non-annular bounded combinatorics, which allows arbitrarily large Dehn-twisting, corresponds to an equivalent condition for Weil-Petersson geodesics. As an application, we show the Weil-Petersson geodesic flow has compact invariant subsets with arbitrarily large topological entropy.
We construct a quasiconformally homogeneous hyperbolic Riemann surface-other than the hyperbolic plane-that does not admit a bounded pants decomposition. Also, given a connected orientable topological surface of infinite type with compact boundary components, we construct a complete hyperbolic metric on the surface that has bounded geometry but does not admit a bounded pants decomposition.
A surgery classification theory is introduced for manifolds of bounded geometry up to quasi-isometry. The Borel conjecture for this theory is proven for flat Euclidean space.
For non-compact manifolds with boundary we prove that bounded geometry defined by coordinate-free curvature bounds is equivalent to bounded geometry defined using bounds on the metric tensor in geodesic coordinates. We produce a nice atlas with subordinate partition of unity on manifolds with boundary of bounded geometry, and we study the change of geodesic coordinate maps.
This is an expository paper. We prove the Cannon-Thurston property for bounded geometry surface groups with or without punctures. We prove three theorems, due to Cannon-Thurston, Minsky and Bowditch. The proofs are culled out of earlier work of the author.
In this paper, we investigate analytical and geometric properties of certain non-compact boundary-manifolds, namely manifolds of bounded geometry. One result are strong Bochner type vanishing results for the L^2-cohomology of these manifolds: if e.g. a manifold admits a metric of bounded geometry which outside a compact set has nonnegative Ricci curvature and nonnegative mean curvature (of the boundary) then its first relative L^2-cohomology vanishes (this in particular answers a question of Roe). We prove the Hodge-de Rham-theorem for L^2-cohomology of oriented boundary-manifolds of bounded g…
A leafwise Hodge decomposition was proved by Sanguiao for Riemannian foliations of bounded geometry. Its proof is explained again in terms of our study of bounded geometry for Riemannian foliations. It is used to associate smoothing operators to foliated flows, and describe their Schwartz kernels. All of this is extended to a leafwise version of the Novikov differential complex.
The main theorem states that any complete connected Riemannian manifold of bounded geometry can be isometrically realized as a leaf with trivial holonomy in a compact Riemannian foliated space.
We prove that simply connected open Riemannian manifolds of bounded geometry, linear growth and sublinear filling growth (e.g. finite filling area) are simply connected at infinity.
Let N^h be a hyperbolic 3-manifold of bounded geometry corresponding to a hyperbolic structure on a pared manifold (M,P). Further, suppose that (\partial{M} - P) is incompressible, i.e. the boundary of M is incompressible away from cusps. Further, suppose that M_{gf} is a geometrically finite hyperbolic structure on (M,P). Then there is a Cannon- Thurston map from the limit set of M_{gf} to that of N^h. Further, the limit set of N^h is locally connected. This answers in part a question attributed to Thurston.
Continuing the study of bounded geometry for Riemannian foliations, begun by Sanguiao, we introduce a chart-free definition of this concept. Our main theorem states that it is equivalent to a condition involving certain normal foliation charts. For this type of charts, it is also shown that the derivatives of the changes of coordinates are uniformly bounded, and there are nice partitions of unity. Applications to a trace formula for foliated flows will given in a forthcoming paper.
We prove that, if a group is relatively hyperbolic, the parabolic subgroups are virtually nilpotent if and only if there exists a hyperbolic space with bounded geometry on which it acts geometrically finitely. This provides, by use of M. Bonk and O. Schramm embedding theorem, a very short proof of the finiteness of asymptotic dimension of relatively hyperbolic groups with virtually nilpotent parabolic subgroups (which is known to imply Novikov conjectures
We introduce a generalization for bounded geometry that we call bounded scale measure. We show that bounded scale measure is a coarse invariant unlike bounded geometry. We then show equivalent definitions for spaces with bounded scale measure and show other properties that spaces with bounded scale measure satisfy. From there, we generalize property A from uniformly discrete metric spaces to large scale spaces with bounded geometry. Lastly, we construct a definition for property A for large scale spaces with bounded scale measure and show that this definition of property A is a coarse invarian…
We study isometric maps between Teichmüller spaces and bounded symmetric domains in their intrinsic Kobayashi metric. From a complex analytic perspective, these two important classes of geometric spaces have several features in common but also exhibit many differences. The focus here is on recent results proved by the author; we give a list of open questions at the end.
