Let p be an odd prime and r be relatively prime to p. Let G be a finite p-group. Suppose an oriented 3-manifold M-tilde has a free G-action with orbit space M. We consider certain Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev SU(2) invariants w_r(M). We will give a fomula for w_r(M) in terms of the defect of M-tilde --> M and the number of elements in G. We also give a version of this result if M and M-tilde contain framed links or colored fat graphs. We give similar formulas for non-free actions which hold for a specified finite set of values for r.
We give criteria for framed links and 3-manifolds to be periodic of prime order. As applications we show that the Poincare sphere is of periodicity 2, 3, 5 only and the Brieskorn sphere (2,3,7) is of periodicity 2, 3, 7 only.
We show how the periodicity of a homology sphere is reflected in the Reshetikhin-Turaev-Witten invariants of the manifold. These yield a criterion for the periodicity of a homology sphere.
A new quantum gauge model is proposed. From this quantum gauge model we derive a quantum invariant of 3-manifolds. We show that this quantum invariant of 3-manifolds gives a classification of closed (orientable and connected) 3-manifolds. From this classification we then prove the Poincaré conjecture.
A p-periodic 3-manifold is a 3-manifold that admits a Z_{p}-action whose fixed point set is a circle. We give a congruence relates the quantum invariant of a p-periodic 3-manifold associated to any modular category over an integrally closed ground ring and the corresponding quantum invariant of its orbit space.
We establish a 3-manifold invariant for each finite-dimensional, involutory Hopf algebra. If the Hopf algebra is the group algebra of a group $G$, the invariant counts homomorphisms from the fundamental group of the manifold to $G$. The invariant can be viewed as a state model on a Heegaard diagram or a triangulation of the manifold. The computation of the invariant involves tensor products and contractions of the structure tensors of the algebra. We show that every formal expression involving these tensors corresponds to a unique 3-manifold modulo a well-understood equivalence. This raises th…
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $G$ the finite cyclic group of order $p$. We use the Casson-Walker-Lescop invariant to find a necessary condition for a three-manifold to have an action of $G$ with a circle as the set of fixed points.
By studying the Seiberg-Witten equations on end-periodic manifolds, we give an obstruction on the existence of positive scalar curvature metric on compact $4$-manifolds with the same homology as $S^{1}\times S^{3}$. This obstruction is given in terms of the relation between the Frøyshov invariant of the generator of $H_{3}(X;Z)$ with the $4$-dimensional Casson invariant $λ_{SW}(X)$ defined by Mrowka-Ruberman-Saveliev. Along the way, we develop a framework that can be useful in further study of the Seiberg-Witten theory on general end-periodic manifolds.
We construct an obstruction for the existence of embeddings of homology $3$-sphere into homology $S^3\times S^1$ under some cohomological condition. The obstruction is defined as an element in the filtered version of the instanton Floer cohomology due to R.Fintushel-R.Stern. We make use of the $\mathbb{Z}$-fold covering space of homology $S^3\times S^1$ and the instantons on it.
We show $ 10/8$-type inequalities for some end-periodic $4$-manifolds which have positive scalar curvature metrics on the ends. As an application, we construct a new family of closed $4$-manifolds which do not admit positive scalar curvature metrics.
This paper studies Dirac operators on end-periodic spin manifolds of dimension at least 4. We provide a sufficient condition for such an operator to be Fredholm for a generic end-periodic metric; this condition is shown to be necessary in dimension 4. We make use of end-periodic Dirac operators to give an analytical interpretation of an invariant of non-orientable smooth 4-manifolds due to Cappell and Shaneson. From this interpretation we show that some exotic non-orientable 4-manifolds do not admit a metric of positive scalar curvature.
Kashaev's invariants for a knot in a three sphere are generalized to invariants of a knot in a three manifold. A relation between the newly constructed invariants and the hyperbolic volume of the knot complement is observed for some knots in lens spaces.
In this paper we show that periodic Takahashi 3-manifolds are cyclic coverings of the connected sum of two lens spaces (possibly cyclic coverings of the 3-sphere), branched over knots. When the base space is a 3-sphere, we prove that the associated branching set is a two-bridge knot of genus one, and we determine its type. Moreover, a geometric cyclic presentation for the fundamental groups of these manifolds is obtained in several interesting cases, including the ones corresponding to the branched cyclic coverings of the 3-sphere.
We introduce semisimple 2-categories, fusion 2-categories, and spherical fusion 2-categories. For each spherical fusion 2-category, we construct a state-sum invariant of oriented singular piecewise-linear 4-manifolds.
We show that a closed orientable 3-manifold M admits an action of Z_p with fixed point set S^1 iff M can be obtained as the result of surgery on a p-periodic framed link L and Z_p acts freely on the components of L. We prove a similar theorem for free Z_p-actions. As an interesting application, we prove the following, rather unexpected result: for any M as above and for any odd prime p, H_1(M, Z_p)\ne Z_p. We also prove a similar criterion of 2-periodicity for rational homology 3-spheres.
The t-invariant can be considered as the Turaev-Viro invariant of order 5 computed for integer colors only. We compute all values of the t-invariant for Seifert manifolds with base sphere and three singular fibers. As a result we show that the manifolds parameters modulo five define the value of the t-invariant. Partially we show that there are 12 distinct values of the t-invariant for these manifolds. Some examples show that the t-invariant for these manifolds is not defined by the first homology group.
The possibilities for new or unusual kinds of topological, locally linear periodic maps of non-prime order on closed, simply connected 4-manifolds with positive definite intersection pairings are explored. On the one hand, certain permutation representations on homology are ruled out under appropriate hypotheses. On the other hand, an interesting homologically nontrivial, pseudofree, action of the cyclic group of order 25 on a connected sum of ten copies of the complex projective plane is constructed.
For a closed oriented 3-manifold $Y$ we define $n(Y)$ to be the minimal non-negative number such that in each homotopy class of non-singular vector fields of $Y$ there is a Morse-Smale vector field with less or equal to $n(Y)$ periodic orbits. We combine the construction process of Morse-Smale flows given in [2] with handle decompositions of compact orientable surfaces to provide an upper bound to the number $n(Y)$ for oriented Seifert manifolds and oriented graph manifolds prime to $\stwo\times\sone$.
We establish a framework for extending invariants of sutured manifolds to invariants of pairs of sutured manifolds who differ by attaching a basic slice along a torus boundary component. In the particular case of (bordered-)sutured Floer homology we show that this recovers the bordered-sutured Floer homology of a corresponding bordered-sutured three-manifold - though the framework is broad enough that it should be applicable in the setting of other invariants of sutured manifolds.
We introduce a generalization of the Dijkgraaf-Witten invariants for cusped or compact oriented 3-manifolds. We show that the generalized DW invariants distinguish some pairs of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds with the same hyperbolic volumes and with the same Turaev-Viro invariants. We also present an example of a pair of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds with the same hyperbolic volumes and with the same homology groups, whereas with distinct generalized DW invariants.
Motivated by the Turaev-Viro invariant of 3-manifolds, we construct a formal topological invariant of closed, oriented 3-manifolds involving spherical tetrahedra as an application of the asymptotic formula of 6j symbols for the Quantum Enveloping Algebra of sl(2). This invariant can be considered as a spherical version of a formal invariant of Ponzano-Regge and Korepanov defined via Euclidean tetrahedra.
We construct an invariant of open four-manifolds using the Heegaard Floer theory of Ozsvath and Szabo. We show that there is a manifold X homeomorphic to R^4 for which the invariant is non-trivial, showing that X is an exotic R^4.

On a smooth closed oriented $4$-manifold $M$ with a smooth action of a finite group $G$ on a Spin$^c$ structure, $G$-monopole invariant is defined by "counting" $G$-invariant solutions of Seiberg-Witten equations for any $G$-invariant Riemannian metric on $M$. We compute $G$-monopole invariants on some $G$-manifolds. For example, the connected sum of $k$ copies of a 4-manifold with nontrivial mod 2 Seiberg-Witten invariant has nonzero $\Bbb Z_k$-monopole invariant mod 2, where the $\Bbb Z_k$-action is given by cyclic permutations of $k$ summands.
Generalized Donaldson invariants of 4-manifolds are defined, using moduli spaces of anti-self-dual connections with structure group SU(N) or PSU(N). Some values of the invariants are calculated for the case that the 4-manifold arises by the knot-complement construction of Fintushel and Stern. The results are consistent with predictions of Marino and Moore.
We extend Turaev's definition of torsion invariants of 3-dimensional manifolds equipped with non-singular vector fields, by allowing (suitable) tangency circles to the boundary, and manifolds with non-zero Euler characteristic. We show that these invariants apply in particular to (the exterior of) Legendrian links in contact 3-manifolds. Our approach uses a combinatorial encoding of vector fields, based on standard spines. In this paper we extend this encoding from closed manifolds to manifolds with boundary.
The Kuperberg invariant is a topological invariant of closed 3-manifolds based on finite-dimensional Hopf algebras. In this paper, we initiate the program of constructing 4-manifold invariants in the spirit of Kuperberg's 3-manifold invariant. We utilize a structure called a Hopf triplet, which consists of three Hopf algebras and a bilinear form on each pair subject to certain compatibility conditions. In our construction, we present 4-manifolds by their trisection diagrams, a four-dimensional analog of Heegaard diagrams. The main result is that every Hopf triplet yields a diffeomorphism invar…
Let $G$ be a finite group acting on a connected compact surface $Σ$, and $M$ be an integer homology 3-sphere. We show that if each element of $G$ is extendable over $M$ with respect to a fixed embedding $Σ\rightarrow M$, then $G$ is extendable over some $M'$ which is 1-dominated by $M$. From this result, in the orientable category we classify all periodic automorphisms of closed surfaces that are extendable over the 3-sphere. The corresponding embedded surface of such an automorphism can always be a Heegaard surface.
We show the existence of hyperbolic 4-manifolds with vanishing Seiberg-Witten invariants, addressing a conjecture of Claude LeBrun. This is achieved by showing, using results in geometric and arithmetic group theory, that certain hyperbolic 4-manifolds contain L-spaces as hypersurfaces.
In this paper, we exploit a subtle indeterminacy in the definition of the spherical Kervaire-Milnor invariant which was discovered by R. Stong to construct non-spin 4-manifolds with even intersection form and prescribed signature.
In this paper, it is explained that a topological invariant for 3-manifold $M$ with $b_1(M)=1$ can be constructed by applying Fukaya's Morse homotopy theoretic approach for Chern--Simons perturbation theory to a local system on $M$ of rational functions associated to the free abelian covering of $M$. Our invariant takes values in Garoufalidis--Rozansky's space of Jacobi diagrams whose edges are colored by rational functions. It is expected that our invariant gives a lot of nontrivial finite type invariants of 3-manifolds.
We address the problem of counting periodic orbits of vector fields on smooth closed manifolds. The space of non-constant periodic orbits is enlarged to a complete space by adding the ghost orbits, which are decorations of the zeros of vector fields. Associated with any compact and open subset $Γ$ of the moduli space of periodic and ghost orbits, we define an integer weight. When the vector field moves along a path, and $Γ$ deforms in a compact and open family, we show that the weight function stays constant. We also give a number of examples and computations, which illustrate the applications…
We propose a modification of the three-manifold invariant based on the use of Euclidean metric values ascribed to the elements of manifold triangulation. We thus obtain a nontrivial invariant that can, in particular, distinguish non-homeomorphic lens spaces.
We study the de Rham complex on a smooth manifold with a periodic end modeled on an infinite cyclic cover X' \to X. The completion of this complex in exponentially weighted L^2-norms is Fredholm for all but finitely many exceptional weights determined by the eigenvalues of the covering translation map H_*(X') \to H_*(X'). We calculate the index of this weighted de Rham complex for all weights away from the exceptional ones.
If a real value invariant of compact combinatorial manifolds (with or without boundary) depends only on the number of simplices in each dimension on the manifold, then the invariant is completely determined by Euler characteristics of the manifold and its boundary. So essentially, Euler characteristic is the unique invariant of this type.
We calculate Perelman's invariant for compact complex surfaces and a few other smooth four-manifolds. We also prove some results concerning the dependence of Perelman's invariant on the smooth structure.
New estimates are derived concerning the behavior of self-dual hamonic 2-forms on a compact Riemannian 4-manifold with non-trivial Seiberg-Witten invariants. Applications include a vanishing theorem for certain Seiberg-Witten invariants on compact 4-manifolds of constant negative sectional curvature.
This paper initiated an investigation on the following question: Suppose a smooth 4-manifold does not admit any smooth circle actions. Does there exist a constant $C>0$ such that the manifold support no smooth $\Z_p$-actions of prime order for $p>C$? We gave affirmative results to this question for the case of holomorphic and symplectic actions, with an interesting finding that the constant $C$ in the holomorphic case is topological in nature while in the symplectic case it involves also the smooth structure of the manifold.
We give a surgery formula for the torsions and Seiberg-Witten invariants associated with $Spin^c$-structures on 3-manifolds. We use the technique of Reidemeister-type torsions and their refinements.
We define invariants of null--homologous Legendrian and transverse knots in contact 3--manifolds. The invariants are determined by elements of the knot Floer homology of the underlying smooth knot. We compute these invariants, and show that they do not vanish for certain non--loose knots in overtwisted 3--spheres. Moreover, we apply the invariants to find transversely non--simple knot types in many overtwisted contact 3--manifolds.
Crowley and Nordström introduced an invariant of $G_2$-structures on the tangent bundle of a closed 7-manifold, taking values in the integers modulo 48. Using the spectral description of this invariant due to Crowley, Goette and Nordström, we compute it for many of the closed torsion-free $G_2$-manifolds defined by Joyce's generalized Kummer construction.
We show that the periodic $η$-invariants introduced by Mrowka--Ruberman--Saveliev~\cite{MRS3} provide obstructions to the existence of cobordisms with positive scalar curvature metrics between manifolds of dimensions $4$ and $6$. The proof combines a relative version of the Schoen--Yau minimal surface technique with an end-periodic index theorem for the Dirac operator. As a result, we show that the bordism groups $Ω^{spin,+}_{n+1}(S^1 \times BG)$ are infinite for any non-trivial group $G$ which is the fundamental group of a spin spherical space form of dimension $n=3$ or $5$.
In this paper we study an invariant for oriented three-manifolds with $b_1>0$, which is defined using Heegaard splittings and the theta divisor of a Riemann surface. The paper is divided into two parts, the first of which gives the definition of the invariant, and the second of which identifies it with more classical (torsion) invariants of three-manifolds. Its close relationship with Seiberg-Witten theory is also addressed.
We introduce a new topological invariant, which is a nonnegative integer, of compact manifolds with boundaries associated with a kind of decomposition of them. Let M and N be m-dimensional compact connected manifolds with boundaries. The new invariant of any boundary union of M and N is less than or equal to that of M (resp. that of N).
An invariant of three-dimensional orientable manifolds is built on the base of a solution of pentagon equation expressed in terms of metric characteristics of Euclidean tetrahedra.
