We establish a 3-manifold invariant for each finite-dimensional, involutory Hopf algebra. If the Hopf algebra is the group algebra of a group $G$, the invariant counts homomorphisms from the fundamental group of the manifold to $G$. The invariant can be viewed as a state model on a Heegaard diagram or a triangulation of the manifold. The computation of the invariant involves tensor products and contractions of the structure tensors of the algebra. We show that every formal expression involving these tensors corresponds to a unique 3-manifold modulo a well-understood equivalence. This raises the possibility of an algorithm which can determine whether two given 3-manifolds are homeomorphic.
Given a group G, we use involutary Hopf G-coalgebras to define a scalar invariant of flat G-bundles over 3-manifolds. When G=1, this invariant equals to the one of 3-manifolds constructed by Kuperberg from involutary Hopf algebras. We give examples which show that this invariant is not trivial.
We introduce and investigate the basic properties of an involutory (dual) quasi-Hopf algebra. We also study the representations of an involutory quasi-Hopf algebra and prove that an involutory dual quasi-Hopf algebra with non-zero integral is cosemisimple.
In the 90s, based on presentations of 3-manifolds by Heegaard diagrams, Kuperberg associated a scalar invariant of 3-manifolds to each finite dimensional involutory Hopf algebra over a field. We generalize this construction to the case of involutory Hopf algebras in arbitrary symmetric monoidal categories admitting certain pairs of morphisms called good pairs. We construct examples of such good pairs for involutory Hopf algebras whose distinguished grouplike elements are central. The generalized construction is illustrated by an example of an involutory super Hopf algebra.
We present a definition of an invariant #(M,H), defined for every finite-dimensional Hopf algebra (or Hopf superalgebra or Hopf object) H and for every closed, framed 3-manifold M. When H is a quantized universal enveloping algebra, #(M,H) is closely related to well-known quantum link invariants such as the HOMFLY polynomial, but it is not a topological quantum field theory.
We construct a new type of quantum invariant of closed framed $3$-manifolds with the vanishing first Betti number. The invariant is defined for any finite dimensional Hopf algebra, such as small quantum groups, and is based on ideal triangulations. We use the canonical element of the Heisenberg double, which satisfies a pentagon equation, and graphical representations of $3$-manifolds introduced by R. Benedetti and C. Petronio. The construction is simple and easy to be understood intuitively; the pentagon equation reflects the Pachner $(2,3)$ move of ideal triangulations and the non-involutive…
This note extends Radford's formula for the fourth power of the antipode of a finite dimensional Hopf algebra to co-Frobenius Hopf algebras and studies equivalent conditions to a Hopf algebra being involutory for finite dimensional and co-Frobenius Hopf algebras.
We introduce the notions of sovereign, spherical and balanced quasi-Hopf algebra. We investigate the connections between these, as well as their connections with the class of pivotal, involutory and ribbon quasi-Hopf algebras, respectively. Examples of balanced and ribbon quasi-Hopf algebras are obtained from a sort of double construction which associates to a braided category (resp. rigid braided) a balanced (resp. ribbon) one.
The invariants of 3-manifolds defined by Kuperberg for involutory Hopf algebras and those defined by the authors for spherical Hopf algebras are the same for Hopf algebras on which they are both defined.
This paper is a study of monoidal categories with duals where the tensor product need not be commutative. The motivating examples are categories of representations of Hopf algebras and the motivating application is the definition of 6j-symbols as used in topological field theories. We introduce the new notion of a spherical category. In the first section we prove a coherence theorem for a monoidal category with duals following MacLane (1963). In the second section we give the definition of a spherical category, and construct a natural quotient which is also spherical. In the third section we d…
We study Kuperberg invariants for sutured manifolds in the case of a semidirect product of an involutory Hopf superalgebra $H$ with its automorphism group $\text{Aut}(H)$. These are topological invariants of balanced sutured 3-manifolds endowed with a homomorphism of the fundamental group into $\text{Aut}(H)$ and possibly with a $\text{Spin}^c$ structure and a homology orientation. We show that these invariants are computed via a form of Fox calculus and that, if $H$ is $\mathbb{N}$-graded, they can be extended in a canonical way to polynomial invariants. When $H$ is an exterior algebra, we sh…
We prove the unrolled superalgebra $\mathcal{U}_ξ^{H}\mathfrak{sl}(2|1)$ has a completion which is a ribbon superalgebra in a topological sense where $ξ$ is a root of unity of odd order. Using this ribbon superalgebra we construct its universal invariant of links. We use it to construct an invariant of $3$-manifolds of Hennings type.
In this paper we develop a theory for constructing an invariant of closed oriented 3-manifolds, given a certain type of Hopf algebra. Examples are given by a quantised enveloping algebra of a semisimple Lie algebra, or by a semisimple involutory Hopf algebra. The invariant is defined by a state sum model on a triangulation. In some cases, the invariant is the partition function of a topological quantum field theory.
The general method of Reshetikhin and Turaev is followed to develop topological invariants of closed, connected, orientable 3-manifolds from a new class of algebras called pseudo-modular Hopf algebras. Pseudo-modular Hopf algebras are a class of Z_2-graded ribbon Hopf algebras that generalise the concept of a modular Hopf algebra. The quantum superalgebra U_q(osp(1|2n)) over C is considered with q a primitive N^th root of unity for all integers N >= 3. For such a q, a certain left ideal I of U_q(osp(1|2n)) is also a two-sided Hopf ideal, and the quotient algebra U_q^(N)(osp(1|2n)) = U_q(osp(1|…
Hennings and Kuperberg defined quantum invariants $Z_{Henn}$ and $Z_{Kup}$ for closed oriented $3$-manifolds based on certain Hopf algebras, respectively. When the Hopf algebras are semisimple, it is shown that $Z_{Kup}=|Z_{Henn}|^2$. In this paper, we present a new proof of this equality.
The Kuperberg invariant is a topological invariant of closed 3-manifolds based on finite-dimensional Hopf algebras. In this paper, we initiate the program of constructing 4-manifold invariants in the spirit of Kuperberg's 3-manifold invariant. We utilize a structure called a Hopf triplet, which consists of three Hopf algebras and a bilinear form on each pair subject to certain compatibility conditions. In our construction, we present 4-manifolds by their trisection diagrams, a four-dimensional analog of Heegaard diagrams. The main result is that every Hopf triplet yields a diffeomorphism invar…
In this paper, we show that Hennings construction of invariants of framed links and 3-manifolds obtained from Hopf algebras can also be carried out for some algebraic quantum groups.
This paper studies invariants of 3-manifolds derived from certain fin ite dimensional Hopf algebras. The invariants are based on right integrals for these algebras. It is shown that the resulting class of invariants is distinct from the class of Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants.
This paper gives a summary of our approach to invariants of three manifolds via right integrals on finite dimensional Hopf algebras and their relation to the Kirby calculus.
A version of Kirby calculus for spin and framed three-manifolds is given and is used to construct invariants of spin and framed three-manifolds in two situations. The first is ribbon *-categories which possess odd degenerate objects. This case includes the quantum group situations corresponding to the half-integer level Chern-Simons theories conjectured to give spin TQFTs by Dijkgraaf and Witten \cite{DW90}. In particular, the spin invariants constructed by Kirby and Melvin \cite{KM91} are shown to be identical to the invariants associated to $\mathrm{SO}(3).$ Second, an invariant of spin mani…
We prove a 20-year-old conjecture concerning two quantum invariants of three manifolds that are constructed from finite dimensional Hopf algebras, namely, the Kuperberg invariant and the Hennings-Kauffman-Radford invariant. The two invariants can be viewed as a non-semisimple generalization of the Turaev-Viro-Barrett-Westbury $(\text{TVBW})$ invariant and the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev $(\text{WRT})$ invariant, respectively. By a classical result relating $\text{TVBW}$ and $\text{WRT}$, it follows that the Kuperberg invariant for a semisimple Hopf algebra is equal to the Hennings-Kauffman-Radfo…
We construct covariant $q$-deformed holomorphic structures for all finitely-generated relative Hopf modules over the irreducible quantum flag manifolds endowed with their Heckenberger--Kolb calculi. In the classical limit these reduce to modules of sections of holomorphic homogeneous vector bundles over irreducible flag manifolds. For the case of simple relative Hopf modules, we show that this covariant holomorphic structure is unique. This generalises earlier work of Majid, Khalkhali, Landi, and van Suijlekom for line modules of the Podleś sphere, and subsequent work of Khalkhali and Moatadel…
Let $(\mathcal{M}, Q)$ be a dg manifold. The space of vector fields with shifted degrees $(\mathcal{X}(\mathcal{M})[-1], L_Q)$ is a Lie algebra object in the homology category $\mathrm{H}((C^{\infty}_{\mathcal{M}},Q)\mathrm{-}\mathbf{mod})$ of dg modules over $(\mathcal{M},Q)$, the Atiyah class $α_{\mathcal{M}}$ being its Lie bracket. The triple $(\mathcal{X}(\mathcal{M})[-1], L_Q; α_{\mathcal{M}})$ is also a Lie algebra object in the Gabriel-Zisman homotopy category $Π((C^{\infty}_{\mathcal{M}},Q)\mathrm{-}\mathbf{mod})$. In this paper, we describe the universal enveloping algebra of $(\mathc…
We develop an explicit skein theoretical algorithm to compute the Alexander polynomial of a 3-manifold from a surgery presentation employing the methods used in the construction of quantum invariants of 3-manifolds. As a prerequisite we establish and prove a rather unexpected equivalence between the topological quantum field theory constructed by Frohman and Nicas using the intersection homology of U(1)-representation varieties on the one side and the combinatorially constructed Hennings-TQFT based on the quasitriangular Hopf algebra ${\cal N}=\Z/2\ltimes \ext *\R^2$ on the other side. We find…
We recapture Kuperberg's numerical invariant of 3-manifolds associated to a semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebra through a `planar algebra construction'. A result of possibly independent interest, used during the proof, which relates duality in planar graphs and Hopf algebras, is the subject of a final section.
By studying ``points of the underlying quantum groups''of coquasitriangular Hopf (face) algebras, we construct ribbon categories for each lattice models without spectral parameter of both vertex and face type. Also, we give a classification of the braiding and the ribbon structure on quantized classical groups and modular tensor categories closely related to quantum SU(N)_L-invariants of 3-manifolds.
We study certain Poisson structures related to quantized enveloping algebras. In particular, we give a description of the Poisson structure of a certain manifold associated to the ring of differential operators.
We use categories of representations of finite dimensional quantum groupoids (weak Hopf algebras) to construct ribbon and modular categories that give rise to invariants of knots and 3-manifolds.
We prove a cyclic cohomological analogue of Haefliger's van Est-type theorem for the groupoid of germs of diffeomorphisms of a manifold. The differentiable version of cyclic cohomology is associated to the algebra of transverse differential operators on that groupoid, which is shown to carry an intrinsic Hopf algebraic structure. We establish a canonical isomorphism between the periodic Hopf cyclic cohomology of this extended Hopf algebra and the Gelfand-Fuchs cohomology of the Lie algebra of formal vector fields. We then show that this isomorphism can be explicitly implemented at the cochain …
The problem of introducing a dependence of elements of quantum group on classical parameters is considered. It is suggested to interpret a homomorphism from the algebra of functions on quantum group to the algebra of sections of a sheaf of algebras on a classical manifold as describing such a dependence. It is argued that the functorial point of view of group schemes is more appropriate in quantum group field theory. A sheaf of the Hopf algebras over the manifold (quantum sheaf) is constructed by using bosonization formulas for the algebra of functions on the quantum group $SU_{q}(2)$ and the …
We investigate homological and ring-theoretic properties of universal quantum linear groups that coact on Artin-Schelter regular algebras A(n) of global dimension 2, especially with central homological codeterminant (or central quantum determinant). As classified by Zhang, the algebras A(n) are connected \N-graded algebras that are finitely generated by n indeterminants of degree 1, subject to one quadratic relation. In the case when the homological codeterminant of the coaction is trivial, we show that the quantum group of interest, defined independently by Manin and by Dubois-Violette and La…
We give an introductory survey to the use of Hopf algebras in several problems of noncommutative geometry. The main example, the Hopf algebra of rooted trees, is a graded, connected Hopf algebra arising from a universal construction. We show its relation to the algebra of transverse differential operators introduced by Connes and Moscovici in order to compute a local index formula in cyclic cohomology, and to the several Hopf algebras defined by Connes and Kreimer to simplify the combinatorics of perturbative renormalization. We explain how characteristic classes for a Hopf module algebra can …
We construct from coassociative coalgebras, bialgebras, Hopf algebras, new objects such as Poisson algebras, Leibniz algebras defined by J-L Loday and M. Ronco and explore the notion of coassociative manifolds.
Rational Hopf algebras (certain quasitriangular weak quasi-Hopf $^*$-algebras) are expected to describe the quantum symmetry of rational field theories. In this paper methods are developped which allow for a classification of all rational Hopf algebras that are compatible with some prescribed set of fusion rules. The algebras are parametrized by the solutions of the square, pentagon and hexagon identities. As examples, we classify all solutions for fusion rules with two or three sectors, and for the level three affine $A_1$ fusion rules. We also establish several general properties of rational…
This paper has two purposes. The first is to explicate the diagrammatic approach to Hopf algebras due to Kuperberg, and to examine his proof of the existence and uniqueness of integrals in both the diagrammatic and purely algebraic contexts. The second purpose of the paper is to show that the theory of integrals for a finite dimensional Hopf algebra A can be deduced from ideas concerning the trace function on End(A). Connections between Kuperberg's work and the trace function should be of interest to those who study three manifold invariants in relation to Hopf algebras.
