A class of n-ary Poisson structures of constant rank is indicated. Then, one proves that the ternary Poisson brackets are exactly those which are defined by a decomposable 3-vector field. The key point is the proof of a lemma which tells that an n-vector $(n\geq3)$ is decomposable iff all its contractions with up to n-2 covectors are decomposable.
Zapolsky inequality gives a lower bound for the L1 norm of the Poisson bracket of a pair of C1 functions on the two-dimensional sphere by means of quasi-states. Here we show that this lower bound is sharp.
We suggest a homotopical description of the Poisson bracket invariants for tuples of closed sets in symplectic manifolds. It implies that these invariants depend only on the union of the sets along with topological data.
Rigidity of the Poisson bracket with respect to the uniform norm is one of the central phenomena discovered within function theory on symplectic manifolds. In the present work we examine the case of $L_p$ norms with $p < \infty$. We show that $L_p $ - Poisson bracket invariants exhibit rigid behavior in dimension two, and we provide an evidence for their flexibility in higher dimensions.
L. Buhovsky, A. Logunov and S. Tanny proved the (strong) Poisson bracket conjecture by Leonid Polterovich in dimension $2$. In this note, instead of open cover consisting of displaceable sets in their work, we consider open cover constituted of topological discs and give a necessary and sufficient condition that Poisson bracket invariants of these covers are positive.
We introduce the notion of tropicalization for Poisson structures on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with coefficients in Laurent polynomials. To such a Poisson structure we associate a polyhedral cone and a constant Poisson bracket on this cone. There is a version of this formalism applicable to $\mathbb{C}^n$ viewed as a real Poisson manifold. In this case, the tropicalization gives rise to a completely integrable system with action variables taking values in a polyhedral cone and angle variables spanning a torus. As an example, we consider the canonical Poisson bracket on the dual Poisson-Lie group $G^*$ fo…
This paper is a fusion of a survey and a research article. We focus on certain rigidity phenomena in function spaces associated to a symplectic manifold. Our starting point is a lower bound obtained in an earlier paper with Zapolsky for the uniform norm of the Poisson bracket of a pair of functions in terms of symplectic quasi-states. After a short review of the theory of symplectic quasi-states, we extend this bound to the case of iterated Poisson brackets. A new technical ingredient is the use of symplectic integrators. In addition, we discuss some applications to symplectic approximation th…
We construct different almost Poisson brackets for nonholonomic systems than those existing in the literature and study their reduction. Such brackets are built by considering non-canonical two-forms on the cotangent bundle of configuration space and then carrying out a projection onto the constraint space that encodes the Lagrange-D'Alembert principle. We justify the need for this type of brackets by working out the reduction of the celebrated Chaplygin sphere rolling problem. Our construction provides a geometric explanation of the Hamiltonization of the problem given by A. V. Borisov and I.…
We present a convexity-type result concerning simple quasi-states on closed manifolds. As a corollary, an inequality emerges which relates the Poisson bracket and the measure of non-additivity of a simple quasi-state on a closed surface equipped with an area form. In addition, we prove that the uniform norm of the Poisson bracket of two functions on a surface is stable from below under C^0-perturbations.
Given a Lie algebra, there uniquely exists a Poisson algebra which is called a Lie-Poisson algebra over the Lie algebra. We will prove that given a Loday/Leibniz algebra there exists uniquely a noncommutative Poisson algebra over the Loday algebra. The noncommutative Poisson algebras are called the Loday-Poisson algebras. In the super/graded cases, the Loday-Poisson bracket is regarded as a noncommutative version of classical (linear) Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. It will be shown that the Loday-Poisson algebras form a special subclass of Aguiar's dual-prePoisson algebras. We also study a proble…
We introduce new invariants associated to collections of compact subsets of a symplectic manifold. They are defined through an elementary-looking variational problem involving Poisson brackets. The proof of the non-triviality of these invariants involves various flavors of Floer theory. We present applications to approximation theory on symplectic manifolds and to Hamiltonian dynamics.
Consider a functional associating to a pair of compactly supported smooth functions on a symplectic manifold the maximum of their Poisson bracket. We show that this functional is lower semi-continuous with respect to the product uniform (C^0) norm on the space of pairs of such functions. This extends previous results of Cardin-Viterbo and Zapolsky. The proof involves theory of geodesics of the Hofer metric on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. We also discuss a failure of a similar semi-continuity phenomenon for multiple Poisson brackets of three or more functions.
For a symplectic manifold $M$ let $\{\cdot,\cdot\}$ be the corresponding Poisson bracket. In this note we prove that the functional $(F,G) \mapsto \|\{F,G\}\|_{L^p(M)}$ is lower-semicontinuous with respect to the $C^0$-norm on $C^\infty_c(M)$ when $\dim M = 2$ and $p < \infty$, extending previous rigidity results for $p = \infty$ in arbitrary dimension.
In this paper we introduce a new method for approaching the C^0 - rigidity results for the Poisson bracket. Using this method, we provide a different proof for the lower semi-continuity under C^0 perturbations, for the uniform norm of the Poisson bracket. We find the precise rate for the modulus of the semi-continuity. This extends the previous results of Cardin-Viterbo, Zapolsky, Entov and Polterovich. Using our method, we prove a C^0 - rigidity result in the spirit of the work of Humiliere. We also discuss a general question of the C^0 - rigidity for multilinear differential operators.
Given an open cover of a closed symplectic manifold, consider all smooth partitions of unity consisting of functions supported in the covering sets. The Poisson bracket invariant of the cover measures how much the functions from such a partition of unity can become close to being Poisson commuting. We introduce a new approach to this invariant, which enables us to prove the lower bound conjectured by L. Polterovich, in dimension 2.
The paper is devoted to function theory on symplectic manifolds. We study a natural class of functionals involving the double Poisson brackets from the viewpoint of their robustness properties with respect to small perturbations in the uniform norm. We observe an hierarchy of such robustness properties. The methods involve Hofer's geometry on the symplectic side and Landau-Hadamard-Kolmogorov inequalities on the function-theoretic side.
We find optimal upper bounds for spectral invariants of a Hamiltonian whose support is contained in a union of mutually disjoint displaceable balls. This gives a partial answer to a question posed by Leonid Polterovich in connection with his recent work on Poisson bracket invariants of coverings.
In this paper we construct a non-skewsymmetric version of a Poisson bracket on the algebra of smooth functions on an odd Jacobi supermanifold. We refer to such Poisson-like brackets as Loday-Poisson brackets. We examine the relations between the Hamiltonian vector fields with respect to both the odd Jacobi structure and the Loday-Poisson structure. Furthermore, we show that the Loday-Poisson bracket satisfies the Leibniz rule over the noncommutative product derived from the homological vector field.
We show that various notions of integrability for Poisson brackets are all equivalent, and we give the precise obstructions to integrating Poisson manifolds. We describe the integration as a symplectic quotient, in the spirit of the Poisson sigma-model of Cattaneo and Felder. For regular Poisson manifolds we express the obstructions in terms of variations of symplectic areas. As an application of these results, we show that a Poisson manifold admits a complete symplectic realization if, and only if, it is integrable. We discuss also the integration of submanifolds and Morita equivalence of Poi…
In the present work, the integrable bi-Hamiltonian hierarchies related to compatible nonlocal Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type are effectively constructed. For achieving this aim, first of all, the problem on the canonical form of a special type for compatible nonlocal Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type is solved.
We define the divergence operators on a graded algebra, and we show that, given an odd Poisson bracket on the algebra, the operator that maps an element to the divergence of the hamiltonian derivation that it defines is a generator of the bracket. This is the "odd laplacian", $Δ$, of Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization. We then study the generators of odd Poisson brackets on supermanifolds, where divergences of graded vector fields can be defined either in terms of berezinian volumes or of graded connections. Examples include generators of the Schouten bracket of multivectors on a manifold (the su…
We solve the problem of reducing to the simplest and convenient for our purposes, canonical form for an arbitrary pair of compatible nonlocal Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type generated by metrics of constant Riemannian curvature in order to get an effective construction of the integrable hierarchies related to all these compatible Poisson brackets.
The nonlinear equations for the general nonsingular pairs of compatible nonlocal Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type are derived and the integrability of these equations by the method of inverse scattering problem is proved. For these equations, the Lax pairs with a spectral parameter are presented. Moreover, we demonstrate the integrability of the equations for some especially important partial classes of compatible nonlocal Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type, in particular, for the most important case when one of the compatible Poisson brackets is local and also for the case when one of…
We classify Lie-Poisson brackets that are formed from Lie algebra extensions. The problem is relevant because many physical systems owe their Hamiltonian structure to such brackets. A classification involves reducing all brackets to a set of normal forms, and is achieved partially through the use of Lie algebra cohomology. For extensions of order less than five, the number of normal forms is small and they involve no free parameters. We derive a general method of finding Casimir invariants of Lie-Poisson bracket extensions. The Casimir invariants of all low-order brackets are explicitly comput…
Poisson brackets admit infinitesimal symmetries which are encoded using oriented graphs; this construction is due to Kontsevich (1996). We formulate several open problems about combinatorial and topological properties of the graphs involved, about integrability and analytic properties of such symmetry flows (in particular, for known classes of Poisson brackets), and about cohomological, differential geometric, and quantum aspects of the theory. Keywords: Poisson bracket, Jacobi identity, infinitesimal symmetry, affine manifold, Poisson cohomology, graph complex.
We show how the relation between Poisson brackets and symplectic forms can be extended to the case of inhomogeneous multivector fields and inhomogeneous differential forms (or pseudodifferential forms). In particular we arrive at a notion which is a generalization of a symplectic structure and gives rise to higher Poisson brackets. We also obtain a construction of Koszul type brackets in this setting.
It is shown that two definitions for an exterior differential in superspace, giving the same exterior calculus, yet lead to different results when applied to the Poisson bracket. A prescription for the transition with the help of these exterior differentials from the given Poisson bracket of definite Grassmann parity to another bracket is introduced. It is also indicated that the resulting bracket leads to generalization of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket for the cases of superspace and brackets of diverse Grassmann parities. It is shown that in the case of the Grassmann-odd exterior differenti…
This is the first in a series of papers on Poisson formalism for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with repulsive nonlinearity and its relation to complex geometry. In this paper we study general continuous potentials. We demonstrate that the Weyl functions of the corresponding auxiliary Dirac spectral problem carry a natural Poisson structure. We call it the Atiyah--Hitchin Poisson bracket. We show that the Poisson bracket on the phase space is the image of the Atiyah--Hitchin bracket on Weyl functions under the inverse spectral transform.
For a particle in the magnetic field of a cloud of monopoles, the naturally associated 2-form on phase space is not closed, and so the corresponding bracket operation on functions does not satisfy the Jacobi identity. Thus, it is not a Poisson bracket; however, it is twisted Poisson in the sense that the Jacobiator comes from a closed 3-form. The space $\mathcal D$ of densities on phase space is the state space of a plasma. The twisted Poisson bracket on phase-space functions gives rise to a bracket on functions on $\mathcal D$. In the absence of monopoles, this is again a Poisson bracket. It …
We consider surfaces embedded in a Riemannian manifold of arbitrary dimension and prove that many aspects of their differential geometry can be expressed in terms of a Poisson algebraic structure on the space of smooth functions of the surface. In particular, we find algebraic formulas for Weingarten's equations, the complex structure and the Gaussian curvature.
