In this paper we study the group K_{2n}^{(n+1)}(F) where F is the function field of a complete, smooth, geometrically irreducible curve C over a number field, assuming the Beilinson--Soulé conjecture on weights. In particular, we compute the Beilinson regulator on a subgroup of K_{2n}^{(n+1)}(F), using the complexes constructed in previous work by the author. We study the boundary map in the localization sequence for n = 3 (the case n = 2 was done in a previous paper). We combine our results with some results of Goncharov in order to obtain a complete description of the image of the regulator map on K_4^{(3)}(C) and K_6^{(4)}(C), independent of any conjectures.
We prove arithmetic Riemann-Roch and Hilbert-Samuel type formulae for pointed stable curves. We give applications to volumes of lattices of integral cusps forms for pointed stable curves of genus 0.
I prove the surjectivity of the $p$-adic regulator from Quillen's $K_2$ of Tate curve to the $p$-adic etale cohomology group when the base field is contained in a cyclotomic extension of $Q_p$. This implies the finiteness of torsion part of $K_1$ of Tate curves thanks to Suslin's exact sequence.
Let $P$ be an arbitrary point on an elliptic curve over the complex numbers of the form $y^2=x^3+a_4\,x+a_6$ or of the form $y^2=x^3+a_2\,x^2+a_4\,x$. We provide explicit formulae to compute the points $P/2$, i.e., the points $Q$ such that $2*Q=P$.
This paper gives a natural extension of Frobenius-Stickelberger formula and Kiepert formula to Abelian functions for "Purely Trigonal Curves", especially, of degree four. A description on the theory of Abelian functions for general trigonal curves of degree four is also included.
We present new addition formulae for the Weierstrass functions associated with a general elliptic curve. We prove the structure of the formulae in n-variables and give the explicit addition formulae for the 2- and 3-variable cases. These new results were inspired by new addition formulae found in the case of an equianharmonic curve, which we can now observe as a specialisation of the results here. The new formulae, and the techniques used to find them, also follow the recent work for the generalisation of Weierstrass' functions to curves of higher genus.
We study the regulator of the Mordell-Weil group of elliptic curves over number fields, functions fields of characteristic zero or function fields of characteristic $p>0$. We prove a new Northcott property for the regulator of elliptic curves of rank at least $4$ defined over a number field. In the function field case, we obtain that non-trivial families of elliptic curves with bounded regulators and bounded ranks are limited families. We conclude by asking new questions.
We use the elliptic regulator to recover some identities between Mahler measures involving certain families of genus 2 curves that were conjectured by Boyd and proven by Bertin and Zudilin by differentiating the Mahler measures and using hypergeometric identities. Since our proofs involve the regulator, they yield light into the expected relation of each Mahler measure to special values of $L$-functions of certain elliptic curves.
We calculate the Beilinson regulators of motives associated to Fermat curves and express them by special values of generalized hypergeometric functions. As a result, we obtain surjectivity results of the regulator, which support the Beilinson conjecture on special values of L-functions.
We construct a rigid analytical regulator for the K_2 of Mumford curves, a non-archimedean analogue of the complex analytical Beilinson-Bloch-Deligne regulator.
Our main goal in the present article is to explain how one can reconstruct the decomposition subgroups and norms of points on an arithmetic curve inside its fundamental group if the following data are given: the fundamental group, a part of the cyclotomic character and the family of the regulators of the fields corresponding to the generic points of all étale covers of the given curve. The approach is inspired by that of Tamagawa for curves over finite fields but uses Tsfasman-Vlăduţ theorem instead of Lefschetz trace formula. To the authors' knowledge, this is a new technique in the anabelian…

We investigate the regulators of elliptic curves with rank 1 in some families of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve. In particular, we formulate some conjectures on the average size of these regulators. We also describe an efficient algorithm to compute explicitly some of the invariants of an odd quadratic twist of an elliptic curve (regulator, order of the Tate-Shafarevich group, etc.) and we discuss the numerical data that we obtain and compare it with our predictions.
We evaluate a rigid analytical analogue of the Beilinson-Bloch-Deligne regulator on certain explicit elements in the K_2 of Drinfeld modular curves, constructed from analogues of modular units, and relate its value to special values of L-series using the Rankin-Selberg method.
We study analytic properties function $m(z, E)$, which is defined on the upper half-plane as an integral from the shifted $L$-function of an elliptic curve. We show that $m(z, E)$ analytically continues to a meromorphic function on the whole complex plane and satisfies certain functional equation. Moreover, we give explicit formula for $m(z, E)$ in the strip $|\Im{z}|<2π$.
We compare general inequalities between invariants of number fields and invariants of abelian varieties over number fields. On the number field side, we remark that there is only a finite number of non-CM number fields with bounded regulator. On the abelian side, assuming the height conjecture of Lang and Silverman, we obtain a Northcott property for the regulator on the set of abelian varieties with dense rational points over a number field. This amounts to say that the arithmetic of CM fields is similar, with respect to the invariants considered here, to the arithmetic of abelian varieties o…
Let $C$ be a curve defined over a discrete valuation field of characteristic zero where the residue field has positive characteristic. Assuming that $C$ has good reduction over the residue field, we compute the syntomic regulator on a certain part of $K_4^[(3)}(C)$. The result can be expressed in terms of $p$-adic polylogarithms and Coleman integration. We also compute the syntomic regulator on a certain part of $K_4^[(3)}(F)$ for the function field $F$ of $C$. The result can be expressed in terms of $p$-adic polylogarithms and Coleman integration, or by using a trilinear map ("triple index") …
Let $X$ be a variety defined over a local field $K$ of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ with a totally degenerate reduction in the sense of Raskind and Xarles. Generalizing earlier work of Raskind and Xarles and relying on some conjectures we define a map, which we call the toric regulator, from the various motivic cohomology groups of $X$ to certain $p$-adically uniformized tori over $K$. This construction captures the part of the étale regulators on $X$ that land in the Galois cohomology of the submodules of cohomology which are extensions of $\mathbb{Z}_l$ by $\mathbb{Z}_l(1)$, simultaneously f…
Let $p\geq 5$ be a prime number. We generalize the results of E. de Shalit about supersingular $j$-invariants in characteristic $p$. We consider supersingular elliptic curves with a basis of $2$-torsion over $\overline{\mathbf{F}}_p$, or equivalently supersingular Legendre $λ$-invariants. Let $F_p(X,Y) \in \mathbf{Z}[X,Y]$ be the $p$-th modular polynomial for $λ$-invariants. A simple generalization of Kronecker's classical congruence shows that $R(X):=\frac{F_p(X,X^{p})}{p}$ is in $\mathbf{Z}[X]$. We give a formula for $R(λ)$ if $λ$ is a supersingular. This formula is related to the Manin--Dri…
We construct certain systems of elements in K_2 of CM elliptic curves. When the classnumber of the field of CM is 1, the image of this system under the regulator map forms an Euler system in the sense of Rubin.
In a well-known 1914 paper, Ramanujan gave a number of rapidly converging series for $1/π$ which are derived using modular functions of higher level. D. V. and G. V. Chudnovsky in their 1988 paper derived an analogous series representing $1/π$ using the modular function $J$ of level 1, which results in highly convergent series for $1/π$, often used in practice. In this paper, we explain the Chudnovsky method in the context of elliptic curves, modular curves, and the Picard-Fuchs differential equation. In doing so, we also generalize their method to produce formulae which are valid around any s…
After noticing that the regulator of a number field dominates the rank of its group of units, we bound from below the regulator of the Mordell-Weil group of elliptic curves over global function fields of characteristic $p\geq5$. The lower bound is an increasing function of the rank and of the height.
In this paper we construct certain higher Chow cycles in the $K_{1}$ of the Jacobian of Fermat curves, generalising a construction of Collino. We further compute the regulator of these elements in terms of special values of hypergeometric functions. Otsubo has computed the regulator of certain elements of $K_0$ and $K_2$ of Fermat varieties and this paper is along the same lines.
We apply the method established in our previous work to derive a Chudnovsky-Ramanujan type formula for the Legendre family of elliptic curves. As a result, we prove two identities for $1/π$ in terms of hypergeometric functions.
For any positive integers $n\geq 3, r\geq 1$ we present formulae for the number of irreducible polynomials of degree $n$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{2^r}$ where the coefficients of $x^{n-1}$, $x^{n-2}$ and $x^{n-3}$ are zero. Our proofs involve counting the number of points on certain algebraic curves over finite fields, a technique which arose from Fourier-analysing the known formulae for the $\mathbb{F}_2$ base field cases, reverse-engineering an economical new proof and then extending it. This approach gives rise to fibre products of supersingular curves and makes explicit why the fo…
Given a principally polarized abelian variety $A$ of dimension $g$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$, the $p$ torsion $A[p]$ is a finite flat $p$-torsion group scheme of rank $p^{2g}$. There are exactly $2^g$ possible group schemes that can occur as some such $A[p]$. In this paper, we study which group schemes can occur as $J[p]$, where $J$ is the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{F}_p$. We do this by computing explicit formulae for the action of Frobenius and its dual on the de Rham cohomology of a hyperelliptic curve with respect to a given ba…
We construct an explicit regulator map from the weigh n Bloch Higher Chow group complexto the weight n Deligne complex of a regular complex projective algebraic variety X. We define the Arakelovweight n motivic complex as the cone of this map shifted by one. Its last cohomology group is (a version of) the Arakelov Chow group defined by H. Gillet. and C.Soule. We relate the Grassmannian n-logarithms (defined as in [G5]) to geometry of the symmetric space for GL_n(C). For n=2 we recover Lobachevsky's formula for the volume of an ideal geodesic tetrahedron via the dilogarithm. Using the relations…
In this article we give explicit formulae for a lift of the relative Frobenius morphism between elliptic curves and show how one can compute this lift in the case of ordinary reduction in odd characteristic. Our theory can also be used in the case of supersingular reduction. By means of the explicit formulae that describe a Frobenius lift, we are able to generalize Mestre's 2-adic arithmetic geometric mean (AGM) sequence of elliptic curves to odd characteristic, and prove its convergence. As an application, we give an efficient point counting algorithm for ordinary elliptic curves which is bas…
We continue our development of the invariant theory of genus one curves with the aim of computing certain twists of the universal family of elliptic curves parametrised by the modular curve X(n) for n = 2,3,4,5. Our construction makes use of a covariant we call the Hessian, generalising the classical Hessian that exists in degrees 2 and 3. In particular we give explicit formulae and algorithms for computing the Hessian in degrees 4 and 5. This leads to a practical algorithm for computing equations for visible elements of order n in the Tate-Shafarevich group of an elliptic curve. Taking Jacobi…
In this paper we construct extensions of the Mixed Hodge structure on the fundamental group of a pointed algebraic curve. These extensions correspond to the regulator of certain explicit motivic cohomology cycles in the self product of the curve which were first constructed by Bloch and Beilinson. This leads to a new iterated integral expression for the regulator. Our result is a generalization of a result of Colombo's where she constructs the extension corresponding to a motivic cycle class in the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve constructed by Collino. This is to appear in the Mathematical …
Iwasawa theory of modular forms over anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of imaginary quadratic fields has been studied by several authors, starting from the works of Bertolini-Darmon and Iovita-Spiess, under the crucial assumption that the prime $p$ is unramified in $K$. We start in this article the systematic study of anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-functions when $p$ is ramified in $K$. In particular, when $f$ is a weight $2$ modular form attached to an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ having multiplicative reduction at $p$, and $p$ is ramified in $K$, we show an analogue of the exceptional z…
Let $p$ be an odd prime number. Let $K$ be the $p$-th cyclotomic field and $F$ its maximal real subfield. We give general formulae of the root numbers of the Jacobian varieties of the Fermat curves $X^p+Y^p=δ$ where $δ$ is an integer. As an application of these general formulae, we derive the equidistribution of the root numbers for the families of Jacobian varieties of the Fermat curves. When $p\nmid δ$, we bound the Selmer groups of these Jacobian varieties. Moreover, if $p$ is regular and all prime ideals of $K$ dividing $δ$ are inert in $K/F$, the Selmer groups are explicitly determined an…
We describe and give computational results of a procedure to compute the divisor class number and regulator of most purely cubic function fields of unit rank 2. Our implementation is an improvement to Pollard's Kangaroo method in infrastructures, using distribution results of class numbers as well as information on the congruence class of the divisor class number, and an adaptation that efficiently navigates these torus-shaped infrastructures. Moreover, this is the first time that an efficient "square-root" algorithm has been applied to the infrastructure of a global field of unit rank 2. With…
A 2015 conjecture of Codesido-Grassi-Mariño in topological string theory relates the enumerative invariants of toric CY 3-folds to the spectra of operators attached to their mirror curves. We deduce two consequences of this conjecture for the integral regulators of $K_2$-classes on these curves, and then prove both of them; the results thus give evidence for the CGM conjecture. (While the conjecture and the deduction process both entail forms of local mirror symmetry, the consequences/theorems do not: they only involve the curves themselves.) Our first theorem relates zeroes of the higher norm…
For an odd prime $p$ satisfying Vandiver's conjecture, we give explicit formulae for the action of the absolute Galois group $G_{\mathbb{Q}(ζ_p)}$ on the homology of the degree $p$ Fermat curve, building on work of Anderson. Further, we study the invariants and the first Galois cohomology group which are associated with obstructions to rational points on the Fermat curve.
We consider certain CM elliptic curves which are related to Fermat curves, and express the values of $L$-functions at $s=2$ in terms of special values of generalized hypergeometric functions. We compare them and a similar result of Rogers-Zudilin with Otsubo's regulator formulas, and give a new proof of the Beilinson conjectures originally due to Bloch.
We prove very general index formulae for integral Galois modules, specifically for units in rings of integers of number fields, for higher K-groups of rings of integers, and for Mordell-Weil groups of elliptic curves over number fields. These formulae link the respective Galois module structure to other arithmetic invariants, such as class numbers, or Tamagawa numbers and Tate-Shafarevich groups. This is a generalisation of known results on units to other Galois modules and to many more Galois groups, and at the same time a unification of the approaches hitherto developed in the case of units.
The Somos 4 sequences are a family of sequences satisfying a fourth order bilinear recurrence relation. In recent work, one of us has proved that the general term in such sequences can be expressed in terms of the Weierstrass sigma function for an associated elliptic curve. Here we derive the analogous family of sequences associated with an hyperelliptic curve of genus two defined by the affine model $y^2=4x^5+c_4 x^4+ ... +c_1 x+c_0$. We show that the recurrence sequences associated with such curves satisfy bilinear recurrences of order 8. The proof requires an addition formula which involves…
In this paper, we establish asymptotic formulae with optimal errors for the number of rational points that are close to a planar curve, which unify and extend the results of Beresnevich-Dickinson-Velani and Vaughan-Velani. Furthermore, we complete the Lebesgue theory of Diophantine approximation on weakly non-degenerate planar curves that was initially developed by Beresnevich-Zorin in the divergence case.
For motives associated with Fermat curves, there are elements in motivic cohomology whose regulators are written in terms of special values of generalized hypergeometric functions. Using them, we verify the Beilinson conjecture numerically for some cases and find formulae for the values of L-functions at 0. These appear analogous to the Chowla-Selberg formula for the periods of elliptic curves with complex multiplication, which are related with the L-values at 1 by the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture.
We study genus one curves of degree 5 defined by Pfaffians. We give new formulae for the invariants, and prove the equivalence of two different definitions of minimality. As an application we show that transformations between models with square-free discriminant are necessarily integral. This result is used by Bhargava and Shankar in their work on the average ranks of elliptic curves.
We study how Tamagawa numbers of Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves vary as one varies the base field or the curve, in the case of semistable reduction. We find that there are strong constraints on the behaviour that appears, some of which are unexpected and specific to hyperelliptic curves. Our methods are explicit and allow one to write down formulae for Tamagawa numbers of infinite families of hyperelliptic curves, of the kind used in proofs of the parity conjecture for Jacobians of curves of small genus.
We present computational results on the divisor class number and the regulator of a cubic function field over a large base field. The underlying method is based on approximations of the Euler product representation of the zeta function of such a field. We give details on the implementation for purely cubic function fields of signatures $(3,1)$ and $(1, 1; 1, 2)$, operating in the ideal class group and infrastructure of the function field, respectively. Our implementation provides numerical evidence of the computational effectiveness of this algorithm. With the exception of special cases, such …
We extend the formulae of classical invariant theory for the Jacobian of a genus one curve of degree $n \le 4$ to curves of arbitrary degree. To do this, we associate to each genus one normal curve of degree $n$, an $n \times n$ alternating matrix of quadratic forms in $n$ variables, that represents the invariant differential. We then exhibit the invariants we need as homogeneous polynomials of degrees $4$ and $6$ in the coefficients of the entries of this matrix.
We give explicit formulae for the logarithmic class group pairing on an elliptic curve defined over a number field. Then we relate it to the descent relative to a suitable cyclic isogeny. This allows us to connect the resulting Selmer group with the logarithmic class group of the base. These constructions are explicit and suitable for computer experimentation. From a conceptual point of view, the questions that arise here are analogues of "visibility" questions in the sense of Cremona and Mazur.
The purpose of the paper is to complete several global and local results concerning parity of ranks of elliptic curves. Primarily, we show that the Shafarevich-Tate conjecture implies the parity conjecture for all elliptic curves over number fields, give a formula for local and global root numbers of elliptic curves and complete the proof of a conjecture of Kramer and Tunnell in characteristic 0. The method is to settle the outstanding local formulae by deforming from local fields to totally real number fields and then using global parity results.
Consider elliptic curves $ E:\ y^{2} = x^{3} + D^{3} $ defined over the quadratic field $\ \Q(\sqrt{-3}) $. Hecke $ L-$series attached to $ E $ are studied, formulae for their values at $ s=1, $ and bound of 3-adic valuations of these values are given. These results are complementary to those in [Q] and [QZ], and are consistent with the predictions of the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer.
We obtain asymptotic formulae for the number of primes $p\le x$ for which the reduction modulo $p$ of the elliptic curve $$ \E_{a,b} : Y^2 = X^3 + aX + b $$ satisfies certain ``natural'' properties, on average over integers $a$ and $b$ with $|a|\le A$ and $|b| \le B$, where $A$ and $B$ are small relative to $x$. Specifically, we investigate behavior with respect to the Sato--Tate conjecture, cyclicity, and divisibility of the number of points by a fixed integer $m$.
The Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture predicts that the parity of the algebraic rank of an abelian variety over a global field should be controlled by the expected sign of the functional equation of its $L$-function, known as the global root number. In this paper, we give explicit formulae for the local root numbers as a product of Jacobi symbols. This enables one to compute the global root number, generalising work of Rohrlich who studies the case of elliptic curves. We provide similar formulae for the root numbers after twisting the abelian variety by a self-dual Artin representation. As …
Let $A/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve with split multiplicative reduction at a prime $p$. We prove (an analogue of) a conjecture of Perrin-Riou, relating $p$-adic Beilinson$-$Kato elements to Heegner points in $A(\mathbb{Q})$, and a large part of the rank-one case of the Mazur$-$Tate$-$Teitelbaum exceptional zero conjecture for the cyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function of $A$. More generally, let $f$ be the weight-two newform associated with $A$, let $f_{\infty}$ be the Hida family of $f$, and let $L_{p}(f_{\infty},k,s)$ be the Mazur$-$Kitagawa two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function attached to $f_{\…
