We show that every frame for a Hilbert space H can be written as a (multiple of a) sum of three orthonormal bases for H. A result of N.J. Kalton is included which shows that this is best possible in that: A frame can be represented as a linear combination of two orthonormal bases if and only if it is a Riesz basis. We further show that every frame can be written as a (multiple of a) sum of two normalized tight frames or as a sum of an orthonormal basis and a Riesz basis for H. Finally, every frame can be represented as a (multiple of a) average of two orthonormal bases for a larger Hilbert space.
We establish dilation theorems for non-tight frames with additional structure, i.e., frames generated by unitary groups of operators and projective unitary representations. This generalizes previous dilation results for Parseval frames due to Han and Larson and Gabardo and Han. We also extend the dilation theorem for Parseval wavelets, due to Dutkay, Han, Picioroaga, and Sun , by identifying the optimal class of frame wavelets for which dilation into an orthonormal wavelet is possible.
We consider the construction of orthonormal directional wavelet bases in the multi-resolution analysis (MRA) framework with quincunx dilation downsampling. We show that the Parseval frame property in MRA is equivalent to the identity summation and shift cancellation conditions on M functions, which essentially characterize the scaling (father) function and all directional (mother) wavelets. Based on these two conditions, we further derive sufficient conditions for orthonormal bases and build a family of quasishearlet orthonormal bases, that has the same frequency support as that of the least r…
We show how some orthonormal bases can be generated by representations of the Cuntz algebra; these include Fourier bases on fractal measures, generalized Walsh bases on the unit interval and piecewise exponential bases on the middle third Cantor set.
In this paper we introduce and show some new notions and results on cg-frames of Hilbert spaces. We define cg-orthonormal bases for a Hilbert space H and verify their properties and relations with cg-frames. Actually, we present that every cg-frame can be represented as a composition of a cg-orthonormal basis and an operator under some conditions. Also, we find for any cg-frame an induced c-frame and study their properties and relations. Moreover, we show that every cg-frame can be written as aggregate of two Parseval cg-frames. In addition, We show each cg-frame as a summation of a cg-orthono…
A definition of frames for Krein spaces is proposed, which extends the notion of $J$-orthonormal basis of Krein spaces. A $J$-frame for a Krein space $(\HH, \K{\,}{\,})$ is in particular a frame for $\HH$ in the Hilbert space sense. But it is also compatible with the indefinite inner product $\K{\,}{\,}$, meaning that it determines a pair of maximal uniformly $J$-definite subspaces with different positivity, an analogue to the maximal dual pair associated to a $J$-orthonormal basis. Also, each $J$-frame induces an indefinite reconstruction formula for the vectors in $\HH$, which resembles the …
In this article we define frame for a Krein space K with a J-orthonormal basis and extend the notion of frame sequence and frame potential analogous to Hilbert spaces. We show that every frame is a sum of three orthonormal bases of a Krein space. We also find relation between frame and orthogonal projections on Krein space.
We prove that any Parseval wavelet frame is the projection of an orthonormal wavelet basis for a representation of the Baumslag-Solitar group $$BS(1,2)=< u,t | utu^{-1}=t^2>.$$ We give a precise description of this representation in some special cases, and show that for wavelet sets, it is related to symbolic dynamics. We show that the structure of the representation depends on the analysis of certain finite orbits for the associated symbolic dynamics. We give concrete examples of Parseval wavelets for which we compute the orthonormal dilations in detail; we show that there are examples of Par…
We construct a uniformly bounded orthonormal almost greedy basis for $L_p([0,1])$, $1<p<\infty$. The example shows that it is not possible to extend Orlicz's theorem, stating that there are no uniformly bounded orthonormal unconditional bases for $L_p([0,1])$, $p\not=2$, to the class of almost greedy bases.
We derive the explicit form of eigenvectors of selfadjoint extension $H_ξ$, parametrized by $ξ\in \langle 0,π),$ of differential expression $ H=-\frac{d^2 }{d x^2} + \frac{x^2 }{4}$ together with the spectrum $σ(H_ξ)$ on the space $L^2(\mathbb{R}^+).$ For each $ξ$ the set of eigenvectors form an orthonormal basis of $L^2(\mathbb{R}^+).$
Given an orthonormal basis $ {\mathcal V}= \{v_j\} _{j\in N}$ in a separable Hilbert space $H$ and a set of unit vectors $ {\mathcal B}=\{w_j\}_{j\in N}$, we consider the sets $ {\mathcal B}_N$ obtained by replacing the vectors $v_1, ...,\, v_N$ with vectors $w_1,\, ...,\, w_N$. We show necessary and sufficient conditions that ensure that the sets $ {\mathcal B}_N$ are Riesz bases of $H$ and we estimate the frame constants of the $ {\mathcal B}_N$. Then, we prove conditions that ensure that $ {\mathcal B}$ is a Riesz basis. Applications to the construction of exponential bases on domains of $ …
In this work we introduce a class of discrete groups containing subgroups of abstract translations and dilations, respectively. A variety of wavelet systems can appear as $π(\G)ψ$, where $π$ is a unitary representation of a wavelet group and $\G$ is the abstract pseudo-lattice $\G$. We prove a condition in order that a Parseval frame $π(\G)ψ$ can be dilated to an orthonormal basis of the form $τ(\G)Ψ$ where $τ$ is a super-representation of $π$. For a subclass of groups that includes the case where the translation subgroup is Heisenberg, we show that this condition always holds, and we cite fam…
Spectral representations of the dilation and translation operators on $L^2({\mathbb R})$ are built through appropriate bases. Orthonormal wavelets and multiresolution analysis are then described in terms of rigid operator-valued functions defined on the functional spectral spaces. The approach is useful for computational purposes.
Let a sequence $(P_n)$ of polynomials in one complex variable satisfy a recurre ce relation with length growing slowlier than linearly. It is shown that $(P_n) $ is an orthonormal basis in $L^2_μ$ for some measure $μ$ on $\C$, if and o ly if the recurrence is a $3-$term relation with special coefficients. The supp rt of $μ$ lies on a straight line. This result is achieved by the analysis of a formally normal irreducible Hessenberg operator with only finitely many nonzero entries in every row. It generalizes the classical Favard's Theorem and the Representation Theorem.
Weaving frames have potential applications in wireless sensor networks that require distributed processing of signal under different frames. In this paper, we study some new properties of weaving generalized frames (or $g$-frames) and weaving generalized orthonormal bases (or $g$-orthonormal bases). It is shown that a $g$-frame and its dual $g$-frame are woven. The inter-relation of optimal $g$-frame bounds and optimal universal $g$-frame bounds is studied. Further, we present a characterization of weaving $g$-frames. Illustrations are given to show the difference in properties of weaving gene…
The measure supported on the Cantor-4 set constructed by Jorgensen-Pedersen is known to have a Fourier basis, i.e. that it possess a sequence of exponentials which form an orthonormal basis. We construct Fourier frames for this measure via a dilation theory type construction. We expand the Cantor-4 set to a 2 dimensional fractal which admits a representation of a Cuntz algebra. Using the action of this algebra, an orthonormal set is generated on the larger fractal, which is then projected onto the Cantor-4 set to produce a Fourier frame.
In this paper we show that every g-frame for an \linebreak infinite dimensional Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ can be written as a sum of three g-orthonormal bases for $\mathcal{H}$. Also, we prove that every g-frame can be represented as a linear combination of two g-orthonormal bases if and only if it is a g-Riesz basis. Further, we show each g-Bessel multiplier is a Bessel multiplier and investigate the inversion of g-frame multipliers. Finally, we introduce the concept of controlled g-frames and weighted g-frames and show that the sequence induced by each controlled g-frame (resp. weighted g-…
We construct directional wavelet systems that will enable building efficient signal representation schemes with good direction selectivity. In particular, we focus on wavelet bases with dyadic quincunx subsampling. In our previous work, We show that the supports of orthonormal wavelets in our framework are discontinuous in the frequency domain, yet this irregularity constraint can be avoided in frames, even with redundancy factor less than 2. In this paper, we focus on the extension of orthonormal wavelets to biorthogonal wavelets and show that the same obstruction of regularity as in orthonor…
In this paper, we show that the non-symmetric convex polytope cannot be served as a window function to produce a Gabor orthonormal basis by any time-frequency sets.
We consider the problem in determining the countable sets $Λ$ in the time-frequency plane such that the Gabor system generated by the time-frequency shifts of the window $χ_{[0,1]^d}$ associated with $Λ$ forms a Gabor orthonormal basis for $ L^2({\Bbb R}^d)$. We show that, if this is the case, the translates by elements $Λ$ of the unit cube in ${\Bbb R}^{2d}$ must tile the time-frequency space ${\Bbb R}^{2d}$. By studying the possible structure of such tiling sets, we completely classify all such admissible sets $Λ$ of time-frequency shifts when $d=1,2$. Moreover, an inductive procedure for co…
A Wilson system is a collection of finite linear combinations of time frequency shifts of a square integrable function. In this paper we use the fact that a Wilson system is a shift-invariant system to explore its relationship with Gabor systems. It is well known that, starting from a tight Gabor frame for $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$ with redundancy $2$, one can construct an orthonormal Wilson basis for $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$ whose generator is well localized in the time-frequency plane. In this paper, we show that one can construct multi-dimensional orthonormal Wilson bases starting from tight Gabor fra…
The orthonormal basis generated by a wavelet of $L^2(\mathbb R)$ has poor frequency localization. To overcome this disadvantage Coifman, Meyer, and Wickerhauser constructed wavelet packets. We extend this concept to the higher dimensions where we consider arbitrary dilation matrices. The resulting basis of $L^2({\mathbb R}^d)$ is called the multiwavelet packet basis. The concept of wavelet frame packet is also generalized to this setting. Further, we show how to construct various orthonormal bases of $L^2({\mathbb R}^d)$ from the multiwavelet packets.
Configurations of subspaces like equichordal and equiisoclinic tight fusion frames, which are in some sense optimally spread apart and which also have reconstruction properties emulating those of orthonormal bases, are useful in various applications, such as wireless communications and quantum information theory. In this paper, a new construction of infinite classes of equichordal tight fusion frames built on semiregular divisible difference sets is presented. Sometimes this construction yields an equiisoclinic packing. Each of the constructed fusion frames is shown to have both a flat represe…
In the paper "Infinite Product Represenations for Kernels and Iterations of Functions", a technique was developed which allows for the construction of a reproducing kernel Hilbert space on basins of attraction containing $0$. When the right conditions are met, an explicit orthonormal basis can be constructed using a particular class of operators. It is natural then to consider how the orthonormal basis changes as we let the basin of attraction vary. We will consider this question for the basins of attraction containing $0$ of the family of polynomials $\mathcal{F} = \{az^{2^{n+2}}-2az^{2^{n+1}…
In this paper we will consider, in the abstract setting of rigged Hilbert spaces, distribution valued functions and we will investigate, in particular, conditions for them to constitute a "continuous basis" for the smallest space $\mathcal D$ of a rigged Hilbert space. This analysis requires suitable extensions of familiar notions as those of frame, Riesz basis and orthonormal basis. A motivation for this study comes from the Gel'fand-Maurin theorem which states, under certain conditions, the existence of a family of generalized eigenvectors of an essentially self-adjoint operator on a domain …
In this paper, we study the spectrality and frame-spectrality of exponential systems of the type $E(Λ,φ) = \{e^{2πi λ\cdotφ(x)}: λ\inΛ\}$ where the phase function $φ$ is a Borel measurable which is not necessarily linear. A complete characterization of pairs $(Λ,φ)$ for which $E(Λ,φ)$ is an orthogonal basis or a frame for $L^{2}(μ)$ is obtained. In particular, we show that the middle-third Cantor measures and the unit disc, each admits an orthogonal basis with a certain non-linear phase. Under a natural regularity condition on the phase functions, when $μ$ is the Lebesgue measure on $[0,1]$ an…
I prove that a Hilbert space has the property that each of its dense (not necessarily closed) subspaces contains an orthoormal basis if and only if it is separable.
Let $μ$ be a Borel probability measure with compact support. We consider exponential type orthonormal bases, Riesz bases and frames in $L^2(μ)$. We show that if $L^2(μ)$ admits an exponential frame, then $μ$ must be of pure type. We also classify various $μ$ that admits either kind of exponential bases, in particular, the discrete measures and their connection with integer tiles. By using this and convolution, we construct a class of singularly continuous measures that has an exponential Riesz basis but no exponential orthonormal basis. It is the first of such kind of examples.
We consider extensions of the Rattray theorem and two Makeev's theorems, showing that they hold for several maps, measures, or functions simultaneously, when we consider orthonormal $k$-frames in $\R^n$ instead of orthonormal basis (full frames). We also present new results on simultaneous partition of several measures into parts by $k$ mutually orthogonal hyperplanes. In the case $k=2$ we relate the Rattray and Makeev type results with the well known embedding problem for projective spaces.
Adapting the recently developed randomized dyadic structures, we introduce the notion of spline function in geometrically doubling quasi-metric spaces. Such functions have interpolation and reproducing properties as the linear splines in Euclidean spaces. They also have Hölder regularity. This is used to build an orthonormal basis of Hölder-continuous wavelets with exponential decay in any space of homogeneous type. As in the classical theory, wavelet bases provide a universal Calderón reproducing formula to study and develop function space theory and singular integrals. We discuss the example…
Let $K\subset \Bbb R^d$ be a set with positive and finite Lebesgue measure. Let $Λ=M(\Bbb Z^{2d})$ be a lattice in $\Bbb R^{2d}$ with density dens$(Λ)=1$. It is well-known that if $M$ is a diagonal block matrix with diagonal matrices $A$ and $B$, then $\mathcal G(|K|^{-1/2}χ_K, Λ)$ is an orthonormal basis for $L^2(\Bbb R^d)$ if and only if $K$ tiles both by $A(\Bbb Z^d)$ and $B^{-t}(\Bbb Z^d)$. However, there has not been any intensive study when $M$ is not a diagonal matrix. We investigate this problem for a large class of important cases of $M$. In particular, if $M$ is any lower block trian…
We study the relationship between operators, orthonormal basis of subspaces and frames of subspaces (also called fusion frames) for a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. We get sufficient conditions on an orthonormal basis of subspaces $\mathcal{E} = \{E_i \}_{i\in I}$ of a Hilbert space $\mathcal{K}$ and a surjective $T\in L(\mathcal{K}, \mathcal{H})$ in order that $\{T(E_i)\}_{i\in I}$ is a frame of subspaces with respect to a computable sequence of weights. We also obtain generalizations of results in [J. A. Antezana, G. Corach, M. Ruiz and D. Stojanoff, Oblique projections and frames. P…
We generalize the orthonormal basis for the Gaussian RKHS described in \cite{MinhGaussian2010} to an infinite, continuously parametrized, family of orthonormal bases, along with some implications. The proofs are direct generalizations of those in \cite{MinhGaussian2010}.
Parseval frames can be thought of as redundant or linearly dependent coordinate systems for Hilbert spaces, and have important applications in such areas as signal processing, data compression, and sampling theory. We extend the notion of a Parseval frame for a fixed Hilbert space to that of a moving Parseval frame for a vector bundle over a manifold. Many vector bundles do not have a moving basis, but in contrast to this every vector bundle over a paracompact manifold has a moving Parseval frame. We prove that a sequence of sections of a vector bundle is a moving Parseval frame if and only if…
We analyze all orthonormal bases of exponentials on the Cantor set defined by Jorgensen and Pedersen in J. Anal. Math. 75,1998, pp 185-228. A complete characterization for all maximal sets of orthogonal exponentials is obtained by establishing a one-to-one correspondence with the spectral labelings of the infinite binary tree. With the help of this characterization we obtain a sufficient condition for a spectral labeling to generate a spectrum (an orthonormal basis). This result not only provides us an easy and efficient way to construct various of new spectra for the Cantor measure but also e…
