We show that algebraically shifting a pair of simplicial complexes weakly increases their relative homology Betti numbers in every dimension.
More precisely, let $Δ(K)$ denote the algebraically shifted complex of simplicial complex $K$, and let $\rbeti{j}(K,L)=\dimk \rhomi{j}(K,L;\kk)$ be the dimension of the $j$th reduced relative homology group over a field $\kk$ of a pair of simplicial complexes $L \subseteq K$. Then $\rbeti{j}(K,L) \leq \rbeti{j}(Δ(K),Δ(L))$ for all $j$.
The theorem is motivated by somewhat similar results about Gröbner bases and generic initial ideals. Parts of the proof use Gröbner basis techniques.
In the world of chain complexes E_n-algebras are the analogues of based n-fold loop spaces in the category of topological spaces. Fresse showed that operadic E_n-homology of an E_n-algebra computes the homology of an n-fold algebraic delooping. The aim of this paper is to construct two spectral sequences for calculating these homology groups and to treat some concrete classes of examples such as Hochschild cochains, graded polynomial algebras and chains on iterated loop spaces. In characteristic zero we gain an identification of the summands in Pirashvili's Hodge decomposition of higher order …
We give an algorithm with singly exponential complexity for computing the barcodes up to dimension $\ell$ (for any fixed $\ell \geq 0$) of the filtration of a given semi-algebraic set by the sub-level sets of a given polynomial. Our algorithm is the first algorithm for this problem with singly exponential complexity, and generalizes the corresponding results for computing the Betti numbers up to dimension $\ell$ of semi-algebraic sets with no filtration present.
We show that for a complete complex algebraic variety the pure component of homology coincides with the image of intersection homology. Therefore pure homology is topologically invariant. To obtain slightly more general results we introduce "image homology" for noncomplete varieties.
The main aim of this paper is to explore the ideas of persistent homology and extended persistent homology, and their stability theorems, using ideas from [Bubenik and Scott, 2014; Cohen-Steiner, Edelsbrunner, and Harer, 2007; and Cohen-Steiner, Edelsbrunner, and Harer, 2009], as well as other sources. The secondary aim is to explore the homology (and cohomology) of non-orientable surfaces, using the Klein bottle as an example. We also use the Klein bottle as an example for the computation of (extended) persistent homology, referring to it throughout the paper.
We compute magnitude homology of various graphs using algebraic Morse theory. Specifically, we (1) give an alternative proof that trees are diagonal, (2) identify a new class of diagonal graphs, (3) prove that the icosahedral graph is diagonal, and (4) compute the magnitude homology of cycles. These results answer several questions of Hepworth and Willerton [HW17].
Let $K(\mathbb{F}_q)$ be the algebraic $K$-theory spectrum of the finite field with $q$ elements and let $p \geq 5$ be a prime number coprime to $q$. In this paper we study the mod $p$ and $v_1$ topological Hochschild homology of $K(\mathbb{F}_q)$, denoted $V(1)_*THH(K(\mathbb{F}_q))$, as an $\mathbb{F}_p$-algebra. The computations are organized in four different cases, depending on the mod $p$ behaviour of the function $q^n-1$. We use different spectral sequences, in particular the Bökstedt spectral sequence and a generalization of a spectral sequence of Brun developed in an earlier paper. We…
E. Sköldberg's Morse Theory from an Algebraic Viewpoint and M. Jöllenbeck's Algebraic Discrete Morse Theory and Applications to Commutative Algebra, which is the algebraic generalization of R. Forman's discrete Morse Theory for Cell Complexes, is discussed in the context of general chain complexes of free modules. Using this, we compute the Chevalley-Eilenberg (co)homology of the Lie algebra of all triangular matrices $\frak{sol}_n$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{Z}_p$ for large enough prime $p$. We determine the column and row in the table of $H_k(\frak{sol}_n;\mathbb{Z})$ where the $p$-torsio…
We provide a construction of free factorization algebras in algebraic geometry and link factorization homology of a scheme with coefficients in a free factorization algebra to the homology of its (unordered) configuration spaces. As an application, this construction allows for a purely algebro-geometric proof of homological stability of configuration spaces.
While homology theory of associative structures, such as groups and rings, has been extensively studied in the past beginning with the work of Hopf, Eilenberg, and Hochschild, homology of non-associative distributive structures, such as quandles, were neglected until recently. Distributive structures have been studied for a long time. In 1880, C.S. Peirce emphasized the importance of (right) self-distributivity in algebraic structures. However, homology for these universal algebras was introduced only sixteen years ago by Fenn, Rourke, and Sanderson. We develop this theory in the historical co…
Developing an algorithm for computing the Betti numbers of semi-algebraic sets with singly exponential complexity has been a holy grail in algorithmic semi-algebraic geometry and only partial results are known. In this paper we consider the more general problem of computing the image under the homology functor of a semi-algebraic map $f:X \rightarrow Y$ between closed and bounded semi-algebraic sets. For every fixed $\ell \geq 0$ we give an algorithm with singly exponential complexity that computes bases of the homology groups $\mathrm{H}_i(X), \mathrm{H}_i(Y)$ (with rational coefficients) and…
In this paper, we study the persistent homology of the offset filtration of algebraic varieties. We prove the algebraicity of two quantities central to the computation of persistent homology. Moreover, we connect persistent homology and algebraic optimization. Namely, we express the degree corresponding to the distance variable of the offset hypersurface in terms of the Euclidean Distance Degree of the starting variety, obtaining a new way to compute these degrees. Finally, we describe the non-properness locus of the offset construction and use this to describe the set of points that are topol…
The subject of persistent homology has vitalized applications of algebraic topology to point cloud data and to application fields far outside the realm of pure mathematics. The area has seen several fundamentally important results that are rooted in choosing a particular algebraic foundational theory to describe persistent homology, and applying results from that theory to prove useful and important results. In this survey paper, we shall examine the various choices in use, and what they allow us to prove. We shall also discuss the inherent differences between the choices people use, and specu…
Milnor proved two uniqueness theorems for axiomatic (co)homology: one for pairs of compacta (1960) and another, in particular, for pairs of countable simplicial complexes (1961). We obtain their common generalization: the Eilenberg-Steenrod axioms along with Milnor's map excision axiom and a (non-obvious) common generalization of Milnor's two additivity axioms suffice to uniquely characterize (co)homology of closed pairs of Polish spaces (=separable complete metrizable spaces). The proof provides a combinatorial description of the (co)homology of a Polish space in terms of a cellular (co)chain…
Described the algebraic structure on the space of homotopy classes of cycles with marked topological flags of disks. This space is a non-commutative monoid, with an Abelian quotient corresponding to the group of singular homologies $H_k(M)$. For the marked flag contracted to a point the multiplication becomes commutative and the subgroup of spherical cycles corresponds to the usual homotopy group $π_k(M)$.
We perform Hochschild homology calculations in the algebro-geometric setting of motives. The motivic Hochschild homology coefficient ring contains torsion classes which arise from the mod-$p$ motivic Steenrod algebra and from generating functions on the natural numbers with finite non-empty support. Under the Betti realization, we recover Bökstedt's calculation of the topological Hochschild homology of finite prime fields.
A chain complex model for the free loop space of a connected, closed and oriented manifold is presented, and on its homology, the Gerstenhaber and Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structures are defined and identified with the string topology structures. The gravity algebra on the equivariant homology of the free loop space is also modeled. The construction includes non simply-connected case, and therefore gives an algebraic and chain level model of Chas-Sullivan's String Topology.
Making use of the recent theory of noncommutative motives, we prove that every additive invariant satisfies Galois descent. Examples include mixed complexes, Hochschild homology, cyclic homology, periodic cyclic homology, negative cyclic homology, connective algebraic K-theory, mod-l algebraic K-theory, nonconnective algebraic K-theory, homotopy K-theory, topological Hochschild homology, and topological cyclic homology.
Let $\mathrm{R}$ be a real closed field and $\mathrm{C}$ the algebraic closure of $\mathrm{R}$. We give an algorithm for computing a semi-algebraic basis for the first homology group, $\mathrm{H}_1(S,\mathbb{F})$, with coefficients in a field $\mathbb{F}$, of any given semi-algebraic set $S \subset \mathrm{R}^k$ defined by a closed formula. The complexity of the algorithm is bounded singly exponentially. It is not known how to compute such a basis for the higher homology groups with singly exponential complexity. As an intermediate step in our algorithm we construct a semi-algebraic subset $Γ$…
The classical trace map is a highly non-trivial map from algebraic K-theory to topological Hochschild homology (or topological cyclic homology) introduced by Bökstedt, Hsiang and Madsen. It led to many computations of algebraic K-theory of rings. Hesselholt and Madsen recently introduced a Z/2-equivariant version of Waldhausen S-construction for categories with duality. The output is a certain spectrum with involution, called the real K-theory spectrum KR, and associated bigraded groups analogous to Atiyah's real (topological) K-groups. This thesis develops a theory of topological Hochschild h…
Hess and Shipley defined an invariant of coalgebra spectra called topological coHochschild homology, and Bohmann-Gerhardt-Høgenhaven-Shipley-Ziegenhagen developed a coBökstedt spectral sequence to compute the homology of coTHH for coalgebras over the sphere spectrum. We construct a relative coBökstedt spectral sequence to study coTHH of coalgebra spectra over any commutative ring spectrum $R$. Further, we use algebraic structures in this spectral sequence to complete some calculations of the homotopy groups of relative topological coHochschild homology.
We discuss and review recent developments in the area of applied algebraic topology, such as persistent homology and barcodes. In particular, we discuss how these are related to understanding more about manifold learning from random point cloud data, the algebraic structure of simplicial complexes determined by random vertices, and, in most detail, the algebraic topology of the excursion sets of random fields.
How does one measure the failure of Hochschild homology to commute with colimits? Here I relate this question to a major open problem about dynamics in contact manifolds -- the assertion that Reeb orbits exist and are detected by symplectic homology. More precisely, I show that for polarizably Weinstein fillable contact manifolds, said property is equivalent to the failure of Hochschild homology to commute with certain colimits of representation categories of tree quivers. So as to be intelligible to algebraists, I try to include or black-box as much of the geometric background as possible.
Let F denote the homotopy fiber of a map f:K-->L of 2-reduced simplicial sets. Using as input data the strongly homotopy coalgebra structure of the chain complexes of K and L, we construct a small, explicit chain algebra, the homology of which is isomorphic as a graded algebra to the homology of GF, the simplicial (Kan) loop group on F. To construct this model, we develop machinery for modeling the homotopy fiber of a morphism of chain Hopf algebras. Essential to our construction is a generalization of the operadic description of the category DCSH of chain coalgebras and of strongly homotopy c…
We show in this text how the most important homology equivalences of fundamental Algebraic Topology can be obtained as reductions associated to discrete vector fields. Mainly the homology equivalences whose existence -- most often non-constructive -- is proved by the main spectral sequences, the Serre and Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequences. On the contrary, the constructive existence is here systematically looked for and obtained.
We construct a bigraded spectral sequence from the gl(0)-homology to knot Floer homology. This spectral sequence is of Bockstein type and comes from a subtle manipulation of coefficients. The main tools are quantum traces of foams and of singular Soergel bimodules.
Given a metric space $X$ and a subspace $A\subset X$, we prove $A$ can generate various algebraic elements in persistent homology of $X$. We call such elements (algebraic) footprints of $A$. Our results imply that footprints typically appear in dimensions above the dimension of $A$. Higher-dimensional persistent homology thus encodes lower-dimensional geometric features of $X$. We pay special attention to a specific type of geodesics in a geodesic surface $X$ called geodesic circles. We explain how they may generate non-trivial odd-dimensional and two-dimensional footprints. In particular, we …
For any space X with the homotopy type of simply-connected, finite-type CW-complex, we construct an associative cochain algebra fls(X) whose cohomology algebra is isomorphic to that of LX, the free loop space on X. For certain X, we define a cochain map from fls(X) to itself that is a good model of the pth-power operation on LX. Under additional conditions on X, e.g., when X is a wedge of spheres, we define a cochain complex hos(X) by twisting together fls(X) and H*(BS^1) and prove that the cohomology of hos(X) is isomorphic to the Borel cohomology of LX. Finally, we define tc(X) to be the map…
The naturally topologized order complex of proper algebraic subsets in $RP^2$, defined by systems of quadratic forms, has rational homology of $S^{13}$
Algebraic $K$-theory is a homology theory that behaves very well on sufficiently nice objects such as stable $C^*$-algebras or smooth algebraic varieties, and very badly in singular situations. This survey explains how to exploit this to detect singularity phenomena using $K$-theory and cyclic homology.
We show that counterexamples of Iyengar and Walker to the algebraic version of Gunnar Carlsson's conjecture on the rank of the homology of a free complex can be extended to examples over any finite group with many choices of the complex.
Let G be a complex, connected, reductive algebraic group with Weyl group W and Steinberg variety Z. We show that the graded Borel-Moore homology of Z is isomorphic to the smash product of the coinvariant algebra of W and the group algebra of W.
In this paper, we study the André-Quillen homology of simplicial commutative $\ell$-algebras, $\ell$ a field, having certain vanishing properties. When $\ell$ has non-zero characteristic, we obtain an algebraic version of a theorem of J.-P. Serre and Y. Umeda that characterizes such simplicial algebras having bounded homotopy groups. We further discuss how this theorem fails in the rational case and, as an application, indicate how the algebraic Serre theorem can be used to resolve a conjecture of D. Quillen for algebras of finite type over Noetherian rings, which have non-zero characteristic.
The stability theorem for persistent homology is a central result in topological data analysis. While the original formulation of the result concerns the persistence barcodes of $\mathbb{R}$-valued functions, the result was later cast in a more general algebraic form, in the language of \emph{persistence modules} and \emph{interleavings}. In this paper, we establish an analogue of this algebraic stability theorem for zigzag persistence modules. To do so, we functorially extend each zigzag persistence module to a two-dimensional persistence module, and establish an algebraic stability theorem f…
A quandle is an algebraic structure which attempts to generalize group conjugation. These structures have been studied extensively due to their connections with knot theory, algebraic combinatorics, and other fields. In this work, we approach the study of quandles from the perspective of the representation theory of categories. Namely, we look at collections of conjugacy classes of the symmetric groups and the finite general linear groups, and prove that they carry the structure of FI-quandles (resp. VIC$(q)$-quandles). As applications, we prove statements about the homology of these quandles,…
We first review various known algebraic structures on the Hochschild (co)homology of a differential graded algebras under weak Poincar{é} duality hypothesis, such as Calabi-Yau algebras, derived Poincar{é} duality algebras and closed Frobenius algebras. This includes a BV-algebra structure on $HH^*(A,A^\vee)$ or $HH^*(A,A)$, which in the latter case is an extension of the natural Gerstenhaber structure on $HH^*(A,A)$. As an example, after proving that the chain complex of the Moore loop space of a manifold $M$ is a CY-algebra and using Burghelea-Fiedorowicz-Goodwillie theorem we obtain a BV-st…
We prove that the Farrell-Jones assembly map for connective algebraic K-theory is rationally injective, under mild homological finiteness conditions on the group and assuming that a weak version of the Leopoldt-Schneider conjecture holds for cyclotomic fields. This generalizes a result of Bökstedt, Hsiang, and Madsen, and leads to a concrete description of a large direct summand of $K_n(\mathbb{Z}[G])\otimes_{\mathbb{Z}}\mathbb{Q}$ in terms of group homology. In many cases the number theoretic conjectures are true, so we obtain rational injectivity results about assembly maps, in particular fo…
