It is proved that the geometry of lightlike hypersurfaces of the de Sitter space S^{n+1}_1 is directly connected with the geometry of hypersurfaces of the conformal space C^n. This connection is applied for a construction of an invariant normalization and an invariant affine connection of lightlike hypersurfaces as well as for studying singularities of lightlike hypersurfaces.
In our article, we introduce and study lightlike hypersurfaces of a metallic semi-Riemannian manifold. We examine some geometric properties of invariant lightlike hypersurfaces. We show that the induced structure on an invariant lightlike hypersurface is also metallic. We also define screen semi-invariant lightlike hypersurfaces, investigate integrability conditions for the distributions and give some examples.
In this paper, we initiate the study of lightlike hypersurfaces of an $(ε)$-almost paracontact metric manifold which are tangent to the structure vector field. In particular, we give definitions of invariant lightlike hypersurfaces and screen semi-invariant lightlike hypersurfaces, and give some examples. Integrability conditions for the distributions involved in the screen semi-invariant lightlike hypersurface are investigated when the ambient manifold is an $(ε)$-para Sasakian manifold.
The main purpose of this paper is to give fundamental properties of real lightlike hypersurfaces of paraquaternionic manifolds and to prove the non-existence of real lightlike hypersurfaces in paraquaternionic space forms under some conditions.
Lightlike hypersurfaces of a statistical manifold are studied. It is shown that a lightlike hypersurface of a statistical manifold is not a statistical manifold with respect to the induced connections, but the screen distribution has a canonical statistical structure. Some relations between induced geometric objects with respect to dual connections in a lightlike hypersurface of a statistical manifold are obtained. An example is presented. Induced Ricci tensors for lightlike hypersurface of a statistical manifold are computed.
In this study, we obtain a spinorial Gauss formula for a lightlike hypersurface in Lorentzian manifold with 4-dimension. Then, we take into account the changes caused by degenerate metric on hypersurface and investigate Dirac operator for lightlike hypersurface. Later, we establish the relation between Dirac operators and Riemannian curvatures of manifold and hypersurface.
In this paper we introduce radical transversal lightlike hypersurfaces of almost complex manifolds with Norden metric. The study of these hypersurfaces is motivated by the fact that for indefinite almost Hermitian manifolds this class of lightlike hypersurfaces does not exist. We also establish that radical transversal lightlike hypersurfaces of almost complex manifolds with Norden metric have nice properties as a unique screen distribution and a symmetric Ricci tensor of the considered hypersurfaces of Kaehler manifolds with Norden metric. We obtain new results about lightlike hypersurfaces c…
The authors study singular points of lightlike hypersurfaces of the de Sitter space S^{n+1}_1 and the geometry of hypersurfaces and use them for construction of an invariant normalization and an invariant affine connection of lightlike hypersurfaces.
Anti-de Sitter space is the Lorentzian space form with negative curvature. In this paper we consider lightlike hypersurfaces along spacelike submanifolds in anti-de Sitter space with general codimension. In particular, we investigate the singularities of lightlike hypersurfaces as an application of the theory of Legendrian singularities.
The authors study the geometry of lightlike hypersurfaces on manifolds $(M, c)$ endowed with a pseudoconformal structure $c = CO (n - 1, 1)$ of Lorentzian signature. Such hypersurfaces are of interest in general relativity since they can be models of different types of physical horizons. On a lightlike hypersurface, the authors consider the fibration of isotropic geodesics and investigate their singular points and singular submanifolds. They construct a conformally invariant normalization of a lightlike hypersurface intrinsically connected with its geometry and investigate affine connections i…
This paper introduces $\anabla$-tensors on lightlike hypersurfaces $M^{n+1}$ of signature $(0,n)$, $(n\geq 1)$ and investigates on their properties in connection with the null geometry of $M$. In particular, we show that there is an interplay between existence of $\anabla$-tensors of certain type and lightlike warped product structures.
In a metric $g.f.f$-manifold we study lightlike hypersurfaces $M$ tangent to the characteristic vector fields, and owing to the presence of the $f$-structure, we determine some decompositions of $TM$ and of a chosen screen distribution obtaining two distributions invariant with respect to the structure. We discuss the existence of a $g.f.f$-structure on a lightlike hypersurface and, under suitable hypotheses, we obtain an indefinite $\mathcal{S}$-structure on the leaves of an integrable distribution. The existence of totally umbilical lightlike hypersurfaces of an indefinite $\mathcal{S}$-spac…
The authors study the geometry of lightlike hypersurfaces on a four-dimensional manifold $(M, c)$ endowed with a pseudoconformal structure $c = CO (2, 2)$. They prove that a lightlike hypersurface $V \subset (M, c)$ bears a foliation formed by conformally invariant isotropic geodesics and two isotropic distributions tangent to these geodesics, and that these two distributions are integrable if and only if $V$ is totally umbilical. The authors also indicate how, using singular points and singular submanifolds of a lightlike hypersurface $V \subset (M, c)$, to construct an invariant normalizatio…
Degenerate submanifolds of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds are quite difficult to study because there is no prefered connection when the submanifold is not totally geodesic. For the particular case of degenerate totally umbilical hypersurfaces, we show that there are "Weyl" connections adapted to the induced structure on the hypersurface. We begin the study of these with their holonomy.
We study constant mean curvature spacelike hypersurfaces and in particular maximal hypersurfaces immersed in pp-wave spacetimes satisfying the timelike convergence condition. We prove the non-existence of compact spacelike hypersurfaces whose constant mean curvature is non-zero and also that every compact maximal hypersurface is totally geodesic. Moreover, we give an extension of the classical Calabi-Bernstein theorem to this class of pp-wave spacetimes.
Lightlike Cartan geometries are introduced as Cartan geometries modelled on the future lightlike cone in Lorentz-Minkowski spacetime. Then, we provide an approach to the study of lightlike manifolds from this point of view. It is stated that every lightlike Cartan geometry on a manifold $N$ provides a lightlike metric $h$ with radical distribution globally spanned by a vector field $Z$. For lightlike hypersurfaces of a Lorentz manifold, we give the condition that characterizes when the pull-back of the Levi-Civita connection form of the ambient manifold is a lightlike Cartan connection on such…
In this paper we study curvature properties of semi-symmetric type of totally umbilical radical transversal lightlike hypersurfaces $(M,g)$ and $(M,\widetilde g)$ of a Kähler-Norden manifold $(\overline M,\overline J,\overline g,\overline {\widetilde g})$ of constant totally real sectional curvatures $\overline ν$ and $\overline {\widetilde ν}$ ($g$ and $\widetilde g$ are the induced metrics on $M$ by the Norden metrics $\overline g$ and $\overline {\widetilde g}$,respectively). We obtain a condition for $\overline {\widetilde ν}$ (resp. $\overline ν$) which is equivalent to each of the follow…
The authors study the geometry of lightlike hypersurfaces on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds $(M, g)$ of Lorentzian signature. Such hypersurfaces are of interest in general relativity since they can be models of different types of physical horizons. For a lightlike hypersurface $V \subset (M, g)$ of general type and for some special lightlike hypersurfaces (namely, for totally umbilical and belonging to a manifold $(M, g)$ of constant curvature), in a third-order neighborhood of a point $x \in V$, the authors construct invariant normalizations intrinsically connected with the geometry of $V$ and i…
In this study, we introduce indefinite sasakian statistical manifolds and lightlike hypersurfaces of an indefinite sasakian statistical manifold. Some relations among induced geometrical objects with respect to dual connections in a lightlike hypersurface of an indefinite sasakian manifold are obtained. Some examples related to these concepts are also presented. Finally, we prove that an invariant lightlike submanifold of indefinite sasakian statistical manifold is an indefinite sasakian statistical manifold.
Given a globally hyperbolic spacetime endowed with a complete lightlike Killing vector field and a complete Cauchy hypersurface, we characterize the points which can be connected by geodesics. A straightforward consequence is the geodesic connectedness of globally hyperbolic generalized plane waves with a complete Cauchy hypersurface.
We construct a special class of Lorentz surfaces in the pseudo-Euclidean 4-space with neutral metric which are one-parameter systems of meridians of rotational hypersurfaces with lightlike axis and call them meridian surfaces. We give the complete classification of the meridian surfaces with constant Gauss curvature and prove that there are no meridian surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector field other than CMC surfaces lying in a hyperplane. We also classify the meridian surfaces with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field. We show that in the family of the meridian surfaces th…
There are three types of hypersurfaces in a pseudoconformal space C^n_1 of Lorentzian signature: spacelike, timelike, and lightlike. These three types of hypersurfaces are considered in parallel. Spacelike hypersurfaces are endowed with a proper conformal structure, and timelike hypersurfaces are endowed with a conformal structure of Lorentzian type. Geometry of these two types of hypersurfaces can be studied in a manner that is similar to that for hypersurfaces of a proper conformal space. Lightlike hypersurfaces are endowed with a degenerate conformal structure. This is the reason that their…
In this paper, we give the Cartan's formula for half-lightlike submanifolds of Lorentzian manifolds and use it to show that a screen homothetic half-lightlike submanifolds of a Lorentzian space form, with a conformal co-screen distribution are locally a lightlike triple product manifolds. Then we give a classification theorem for half-lightlike submanifolds of Lorentzian space form with constant screen principal curvatures. These results extend some results obtained in the case of lightlike hypersurfaces of Lorentzian manifolds ([1]).
The lightlike geometry of codimension two spacelike submanifolds in Lorentz-Minkowski space has been developed in [Izumiya, S. and Romero Fuster, M. C. Selecta Mathematica (NS), 13 23--55 (2007)] which is a natural Lorentzian analogue of the classical Euclidean differential geometry of hypersurfaces. In this paper we investigate a special class of surfaces (i.e., marginally trapped surfaces) in Minkowski space-time from the view point of the lightlike geometry.
We study Weyl structures on lightlikes hypersurfaces endowed with a conformal structure of certain type and specific screen distribution: the Weyl screen structures. We investigate various differential geometric properties of Einstein-Weyl screen structures on lightlike hypersurfaces and show that, for ambiant Lorentzian space $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}_{1}$ and a totally umbilical screen foliation, there is a strong interplay with the induced (Riemannian) Weyl-structure on the leaves. Finally, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a Weyl structure defined by the $1-$form of an almost co…
We study the geometry of curves in the Minkowski space and in the de Sitter space, specially at points where the tangent direction is lightlike (i.e. has length zero) called lightlike points of the curve. We define the focal sets of these curves and study the metric structure of them. At the lightlike points, the focal set is not defined. We use singularity theory techniques to carry out our study and investigate the focal set near lightlike points.
A world sheet in anti-de Sitter space is a timelike submanifold consisting of a one-parameter family of spacelike submanifolds. We consider the family of lightlike hypersurfaces along spacelike submanifolds in the world sheet. The locus of the singularities of lightlike hypersurfaces along spacelike submanifolds forms the caustic of the world sheet. This notion is originally introduced by Bousso and Randall in theoretical physics. In this paper we give a mathematical framework for the caustics of world sheets as an application of the theory of graph-like Legendrian unfoldings.
We prove existence in the Minkowski space of entire spacelike hypersurfaces with constant negative scalar curvature and given set of lightlike directions at infinity; we also construct the entire scalar curvature flow with prescribed set of lightlike directions at infinity, and prove that the flow converges to a spacelike hypersurface with constant scalar curvature. The proofs rely on barriers construction and a priori estimates.
We prove existence of compact spacelike hypersurfaces with prescribed k - curvature in de Sitter space, where the prescription function depends on both space and the tilt function.
We give a unified description of tetrahedra with lightlike faces in 3d anti-de Sitter, de Sitter and Minkowski spaces and of their duals in 3d anti-de Sitter, hyperbolic and half-pipe spaces. We show that both types of tetrahedra are determined by a generalized cross-ratio with values in a commutative 2d real algebra that generalizes the complex numbers. Equivalently, tetrahedra with lightlike faces are determined by a pair of edge lengths and their duals by a pair of dihedral angles. We prove that the dual tetrahedra are precisely the generalized ideal tetrahedra introduced by Danciger. Final…
In this paper we present a rigidity theorem for locally isometric hypersurfaces with a curvature restriction in de Sitter space. This is an analogue to the case for Riemannian space forms given by Guan and Shen in [5].
We study the isometric spacelike embedding problem in scaled de Sitter space, and obtain Weyl-type estimates and the corresponding closedness in the space of embeddings.
In this paper, we use two conformal non-homogeneous coordinate systems, modeled on the de Sitter space ${\mathbb S}^{m+1}_1$, to cover the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^{m+1}_1$, so that the conformal geometry of regular space-like hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{Q}^{m+1}_1$ is treated as that of hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb S}^{m+1}_1$. As a result, we give a complete classification of the regular space-like hypersurfaces (represented in the de Sitter space ${\mathbb S}^{m+1}_1$) with parallel Blaschke tensors.
In this paper, we study complete hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature in anti-de Sitter space $H^{n+1}_1(-1)$. we prove that if a complete space-like hypersurface with constant mean curvature $x:\mathbf M\rightarrow H^{n+1}_1(-1) $ has two distinct principal curvatures $λ,μ$, and inf$|λ-μ|>0$, then $x$ is the standard embedding $ H^{m} (-\frac{1}{r^2})\times H^{n-m} (-\frac{1}{1 - r^2})$in anti-de Sitter space $ H^{n+1}_1 (-1)$.
We show that for a very general and natural class of curvature functions (for example the curvature quotients $(σ_n/σ_l)^{\frac{1}{n-l}}$) the problem of finding a complete spacelike strictly convex hypersurface in de Sitter space satisfying $f(κ) = σ\in (1,\infty)$ with a prescribed compact future asymptotic boundary $Γ$ at infinity has at least one smooth solution (if l = 1 or l = 2 there is uniqueness). This is the exact analogue of the asymptotic plateau problem in Hyperbolic space and is in fact a precise dual problem. By using this duality we obtain for free the existence of strictly con…
In this paper, we deduce some rigidity results in warped product spaces under normal variations of CMC hypersurfaces. In particular, we prove the existence of one-parameter families locally rigid on the spatial fiber of Anti-de Sitter Schwarzschild spacetime and one-parameter families with bifurcation points on the spatial fiber of de Sitter Schwarzschild spacetime.
In this paper, we prove the existence of smooth, entire, strictly convex, spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurfaces with prescribed lightlike directions in Minkowski space. This is equivalent to prove the existence of smooth, entire, strictly convex, spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurfaces with prescribed Gauss map image. We also show that there doesn't exist any entire, convex, strictly spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurfaces. Moreover, we generalize the result in \cite{RWX} and construct strictly convex, spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurface with bounde…
We consider contracting flows in $(n+1)$-dimensional hyperbolic space and expanding flows in $(n+1)$-dimensional de Sitter space. When the flow hypersurfaces are strictly convex we relate the contracting hypersurfaces and the expanding hypersurfaces by the Gauss map. The contracting hypersurfaces shrink to a point $x_0$ in finite time while the expanding hypersurfaces converge to the maximal slice $\{ τ=0\}$. After rescaling, by the same scale factor, the resclaed contracting hypersurfaces converge to a unit geodesic sphere, while the rescaled expanding hypersufaces converge to slice $\{ τ= -1…
De Sitter spacetime can be separated into two parts along two kinds of hypersurfaces and the half-de Sitter spacetimes are covered by the planar and hyperbolic coordinates respectively. Two positive energy theorems were proved previously for certain $¶$-asymptotically de Sitter and $\H$-asymptotically de Sitter initial data sets by the second author and collaborators. These initial data sets are asymptotic to time slices of the two kinds of half-de Sitter spacetimes respectively, and their mean curvatures are bounded from above by certain constants. While the mean curvatures violate these cond…
Local estimates of the maximal curvatures of admissible spacelike hypersurfaces in de Sitter space for k-symmetric curvature functions are obtained. They depend on interior and boundary data.
Submanifolds in Lorentz-Minkowski space are investigated from various mathematical viewpoints and are of interest also in relativity theory. We define the hyperbolic surface and the de Sitter surface of a curve in the spacelike hypersurface M in the Minkowski 4-space. These surfaces are respectively located in the hyperbolic 3-space and in the de Sitter 3-space. We use techniques of the theory of singularities in order to describe the generic shape of these surfaces and of their singular value sets. We also investigate geometric meanings of those singularities. The results in this paper contri…
We prove uniqueness, existence, and regularity results for maximal hypersurfaces in spacetimes with a conformal completion at timelike infinity and asymptotically constant scalar curvature, as relevant for asymptotically AdS spacetimes. This work is dedicated to Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat on the occasion of her upcoming 99th birthday.
In this paper, we give a complete conformal classification of the regular space-like hypersurfaces in the de Sitter Space $\mathbb{S}^{m+1}_{1}$ with parallel para-Blaschke tensors.
We study the asymptotic behavior of convex Cauchy hypersurfaces on maximal globally hyperbolic spatially compact space-times of constant curvature. We generalise the result of [11] to the (2+1) de Sitter and anti de Sitter cases. We prove that in these cases the level sets of quasi-concave times converge in the Gromov equivariant topology, when time goes to 0, to a real tree. Moreover, this limit does not depend on the choice of the time function. We also consider the problem of asymptotic behavior in the flat (n+1) dimensional case. We prove that the level sets of quasi-concave times converge…
