Let A_K be an abelian variety over a discrete valuation field K. Let A be the Neron model of A_K over the ring of integers O_K of K and A_k its special fibre. We study the set of rational points of the group of components ϕ_A of A_k. In particular, we look at the cases where A_K is a Jacobian or where A_K is an abelian variety having semi-stable reduction. We also consider algebraic tori over K instead of abelian varieties.
If $G$ is a finite $\ell$-group acting on an affine space $\mathbb{A}^n$ over a finite field $K$ of cardinality prime to $\ell$, Serre has shown that there exists a rational fixed point. We generalize this to the case where $K$ is a henselian discretely valued field of characteristic zero with algebraically closed residue field and with residue characteristic different from $\ell$. We also treat the case where the residue field is finite of cardinality $q$ such that $\ell$ divides $q-1$. To this aim, we study group actions on weak Néron models.
For a binary quartic form $ϕ$ without multiple factors, we classify the quartic K3 surfaces $ϕ(x,y)=ϕ(z,t)$ whose Neron-Severi group is (rationally) generated by lines. For generic binary forms $ϕ$, $ψ$ of prime degree without multiple factors, we prove that the Neron-Severi group of the surface $ϕ(x,y)=ψ(z,t)$ is rationally generated by lines.
We analyze the geometry of rational p-division points in degenerating families of elliptic curves in characteristic p. We classify the possible Kodaira symbols and determine for the Igusa moduli problem the reduction type of the universal curve. Special attention is paid to characteristic 2 and 3 where wild ramification and stacky phenomena show up.
We introduce the Néron component series of an abelian variety $A$ over a complete discretely valued field. This is a power series in $\Z[[T]]$, which measures the behaviour of the number of components of the Néron model of $A$ under tame ramification of the base field. If $A$ is tamely ramified, then we prove that the Néron component series is rational. It has a pole at T=1, whose order equals one plus the potential toric rank of $A$. This result is a crucial ingredient of our proof of the motivic monodromy conjecture for abelian varieties. We expect that it extends to the wildly ramified case…
We study a trace formula for tamely ramified abelian varieties $A$ over a complete discretely valued field, which expresses the Euler characteristic of the special fiber of the Néron model of $A$ in terms of the Galois action on the $\ell$-adic cohomology of $A$. If $A$ has purely additive reduction, the trace formula yields a cohomological interpretation for the number of connected components of the special fiber of the Néron model.
Let A be the Néron model of an abelian variety A_K over the fraction field K of a discrete valuation ring R. Due to work of Mazur-Messing, there is a functorial way to prolong the universal extension of A_K by a vector group to a smooth and separated group scheme over R, called the canonical extension of A. In this paper, we study the canonical extension when A_K=J_K is the Jacobian of a smooth proper and geometrically connected curve X_K over K. Assuming that X_K admits a proper flat regular model X over R that has generically smooth closed fiber, our main result identifies the identity compo…
This article improves certain results of Dino Lorenzini concerning the groups of connected components of special fibres of Néron models of abelian varieties. Lorenzini has shown the existence of a four step filtration on the prime-to-$p$ part ($p$ is the residue characteristic), and proved certain bounds for the successive quotients. We improve these bounds and show that our bounds are sharp. As an application, we give a complete classification of the groups that can arise as the prime-to-$p$ part of the group of connected components of the Neron model of an abelian variety with given dimensio…
We study rational points on a smooth variety X over a complete local field K with algebraically closed residue field, and models of X with tame quotient singularities. If a model of X is the quotient of a Galois action on a weak Néron model of the base change of X to a tame Galois extension of K, then we construct a canonical weak Néron model of X with a map to this model, and examine its special fiber. As an application we get examples of singular models of X such that X has K-rational points specializing to a singular point of this model. Moreover we obtain formulas for the motivic Serre inv…
We prove some new results on the arithmetic of abelian varieties over function fields of one variable over finitely generated (infinite) fields. Among other things, we introduce certain new natural objects `discrete Selmer groups' and `discrete Shafarevich-Tate groups', and prove that they are finitely generated $\Bbb Z$-modules. Further, we prove that in the isotrivial case, the discrete Shafarevich-Tate group vanishes and the discrete Selmer group coincides with the Mordell-Weil group. One of the key ingredients to prove these results is a new specialisation theorem à la Néron for first Galo…
In general, not much is known about the arithmetic of K3 surfaces. Once the geometric Picard number, which is the rank of the Neron-Severi group over an algebraic closure of the base field, is high enough, more structure is known and more can be said. However, until recently not a single K3 surface was known to have geometric Picard number one. We give explicit examples of such surfaces over the rational numbers. This solves an old problem that has been attributed to Mumford. The examples we give also contain infinitely many rational points, thereby answering a question of Swinnerton-Dyer and …
We study a variant of the Neron models over curves which is recently found by the second named author in a more general situation using the theory of Hodge modules. We show that its identity component is a certain open subset of an iterated blow-up along smooth centers of the Zucker extension of the family of intermediate Jacobians and that the total space is a complex Lie group over the base curve and is Hausdorff as a topological space. In the unipotent monodromy case, the image of the map to the Clemens extension coincides with the Neron model defined by Green, Griffiths and Kerr. In the ca…
We determine the behavior under Weil restriction of the group of connected components of the special fiber of an arbitrary smooth group scheme (whose Weil restriction exists) over an arbitrary (commutative and unital) local ring. Applications to Néron models are given.
Let $X \hookrightarrow \mathbb{P}^r$ be a smooth projective variety defined by homogeneous polynomials of degree $\leq d$ over an algebraically closed field. Let $\mathbf{Pic}\, X$ be the Picard scheme of $X$. Let $\mathbf{Pic}^0 X$ be the identity component of $\mathbf{Pic}\, X$. The Néron--Severi group scheme of $X$ is defined by $\mathbf{NS}\, X = (\mathbf{Pic}\, X)/(\mathbf{Pic}^0 X)_{\mathrm{red}}$. We give an explicit upper bound on the order of the finite group scheme $(\mathbf{NS}\, X)_{\mathrm{tor}}$ in terms of $d$ and $r$. As a corollary, we give an upper bound on the order of the f…
We define a new canonical height pairing on the rational points of elliptic curves over global function fields which takes values in the multiplicative group of a completion of the function field. This height serves as an analogue of both the classical Neron-Tate height and analytic p-adic heights. Our main result is that under some general hypotheses this pairing is non-degenerate.
Let $k$ be a number field and $U$ a smooth integral $k$-variety. Let $X \to U$ be an abelian scheme. We consider the set $\mathcal{R}$ of rational points $m \in U(k)$ such that the Mordell-Weil rank of the fibre $U_{m}$ is strictly bigger than the Mordell-Weil rank of the generic fibre. We prove the following results. If the $k$-variety $X$ is $k$-unirational, then $\mathcal{R}$ is dense for the Zariski topology on $U$. If $X$ is $k$-rational, then $\mathcal{R}$ is not thin in $U$. This generalizes results of Billard and of Salgado. The main idea goes back to Néron's thesis: use the generic po…
We present a dynamical proof of the well-known fact that the Neron-Tate canonical height (and its local counterpart) takes rational values at points of an elliptic curve over a function field k of transcendence degree 1 over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic 0. More generally, we investigate the mechanism for which the local canonical height for a rational function f defined over k can take irrational values (at points in a local completion of k), providing examples in all degrees greater than 1. Building on Kiwi's classification of non-archimedean Julia sets for quadratic maps…
Let X be a smooth double cover of a geometrically ruled surface defined over a separably closed field of characteristic different from 2. The main result of this paper is a finite presentation of the 2-torsion in the Brauer group of X with generators given by central simple algebras over the function field of X and relations coming from the Néron-Severi group of X. In particular, the result gives a central simple algebra representative for the unique nontrivial Brauer class on any Enriques surface. An example demonstrating the applications to the study of rational points is given.
In this paper, we formulate and prove a duality for cohomology of curves over perfect fields of positive characteristic with coefficients in Neron models of abelian varieties. This is a global function field version of the author's previous work on local duality and Grothendieck's duality conjecture. It generalizes the perfectness of the Cassels-Tate pairing in the finite base field case. The proof uses the local duality mentioned above, Artin-Milne's global finite flat duality, the non-degeneracy of the height pairing and finiteness of crystalline cohomology. All these ingredients are organiz…
We relate a part of the abelian etale fundamental group of curves over local fields to the component group of the Neron model of the jacobian. We apply the result to the modular curve X_0(p)/Q_p to show that the unramified abelian covering X_1(p) over X_0(p) (Shimura covering) uses up all the possible ramification over the special fiber of X_0(p).
We prove that certain degenerate abelian varieties, the compactified Jacobian of a nodal curve and a stable quasiabelian variety, satisfy autoduality. We establish this result by proving a comparison theorem that relates the associated family of Picard schemes to the Néron model, a result of independent interest. In our proof, a key fact is that the total space of a suitable family of compactified Jacobians has rational singularities.
We push further the classical proof of Weil upper bound for the number of rational points of an absolutely irreducible smooth projective curve $X$ over a finite field in term of euclidean relationships between the Neron Severi classes in $X\times X$ of the graphs of iterations of the Frobenius morphism. This allows us to recover Ihara's bound, which can be seen as a {\em second order} Weil upper bound, to establish a new {\em third order} Weil upper bound, and using {\tt magma} to produce numerical tables for {\em higher order} Weil upper bounds. We also give some interpretation for the defect…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over the complex numbers. One knows by the Cone Theorem that the closed cone of curves of $X$ is rational polyhedral whenever $c_1(X)$ is ample. For varieties $X$ such that $c_1(X)$ is not ample, however, it is in general difficult to determine the structure of $\bar NE(X)$. The purpose of this paper is to study the cone of curves of abelian varieties. Specifically, the abelian varieties $X$ are determined such that the closed cone $\bar NE(X)$ is rational polyhedral. The result can also be formulated in terms of the nef cone of $X$ or in terms of the sem…
Let $K$ be a field finitely generated over ${\Q}$, and $A$ an Abelian variety defined over $K$. Then by the Mordell-Weil Theorem, the set of rational points $A(K)$ is a finitely-generated Abelian group. In this paper, assuming Tate's Conjecture on algebraic cycles, we prove a limit formula for the Mordell-Weil rank of an arbitrary family of Abelian varieties $A$ over a number field $k$; this is the Abelian fibration analogue of the Nagao formula for elliptic surfaces $E$, originally conjectured by Nagao, and proven by Rosen and Silverman to be equivalent to Tate's Conjecture for $E$. We also g…
The aim of this paper is to prove that a K3 surface is the minimal model of the quotient of an Abelian surface by a group $G$ (respectively of a K3 surface by an Abelian group $G$) if and only if a certain lattice is primitively embedded in its Néron--Severi group. This allows one to describe the coarse moduli space of the K3 surfaces which are (rationally) $G$-covered by Abelian or K3 surfaces (in the latter case $G$ is an Abelian group). If either $G$ has order 2 or $G$ is cyclic and acts on an Abelian surface, this result was already known, so we extend it to the other cases. Moreover, we p…
Let $K$ be a complete discrete valuation field. Let $\mathcal{O}_K$ be its ring of integers. Let $k$ be its residue field which we assume to be algebraically closed of characteristic exponent $p\geq1$. Let $G/K$ be a semi-abelian variety. Let $\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{O}_K$ be its Néron model. The special fiber $\mathcal{G}_k/k$ is an extension of the identity component $\mathcal{G}_k^0/k$ by the group of components $Φ(G)$. We say that $G/K$ has split reduction if this extension is split. Whereas $G/K$ has always split reduction if $p=1$ we prove that it is no longer the case if $p>1$ even if $G/K…
We consider the rigid monoidal category of character sheaves on a smooth commutative group scheme $G$ over a finite field $k$ and expand the scope of the function-sheaf dictionary from connected commutative algebraic groups to this setting. We find the group of isomorphism classes of character sheaves on $G$ and show that it is an extension of the group of characters of $G(k)$ by a cohomology group determined by the component group scheme of $G$. We also classify all morphisms in the category character sheaves on $G$. As an application, we study character sheaves on Greenberg transforms of loc…
Let $p$ be a prime, let $K$ be a discretely valued extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and let $A_{K}$ be an abelian $K$-variety with semistable reduction. Extending work by Kim and Marshall from the case where $p>2$ and $K/\mathbb{Q}_p$ is unramified, we prove an $l=p$ complement of a Galois cohomological formula of Grothendieck for the $l$-primary part of the Néron component group of $A_{K}$. Our proof involves constructing, for each $m\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$, a finite flat $\mathscr{O}_K$-group scheme with generic fiber equal to the maximal 1-crystalline submodule of $A_{K}[p^{m}]$. As a corollar…
We consider a family of abelian surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$ arising as Prym varieties of double covers of genus-$1$ curves by genus-$3$ curves. These abelian surfaces carry a polarization of type $(1,2)$ and we show that the average size of the Selmer group of this polarization equals $3$. Moreover we show that the average size of the $2$-Selmer group of the abelian surfaces in the same family is bounded above by $5$. This implies an upper bound on the average rank of these Prym varieties, and gives evidence for the heuristics of Poonen and Rains for a family of abelian varieties which are not …
We show that the motivic zeta functions of smooth, geometrically connected curves with no rational points are rational functions. This was previously known only for curves whose smooth projective models have a rational point on each connected component. In the course of the proof we study the class of a Severi-Brauer scheme over a general base in the Grothendieck ring of varieties.
Let $X$ be a projective variety admitting a polarized (or more generally, int-amplified) endomorphism. We show: there are only finitely many contractible extremal rays; and when $X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial normal, every minimal model program is equivariant relative to the monoid $SEnd(X)$ of all surjective endomorphisms, up to finite index. Further, when $X$ is rationally connected and smooth, we show: there is a finite-index submonoid $G$ of $SEnd(X)$ such that $G$ acts via pullback as diagonal (and hence commutative) matrices on the Neron-Severi group; the full automorphisms group $Aut(X)$…
We study the rationality of the components of the conchoid to an irreducible algebraic affine plane curve, excluding the trivial cases of the isotropic lines, of the lines through the focus and the circle centered at the focus and radius the distance involved in the conchoid. We prove that conchoids having all their components rational can only be generated by rational curves. Moreover, we show that reducible conchoids to rational curves have always their two components rational. In addition, we prove that the rationality of the conchoid component, to a rational curve, does depend on the base …
We study the problem of rationality of an infinite series of components, the so-called Ein components, of the Gieseker-Maruyama moduli space $M(e,n)$ of rank 2 stable vector bundles with the first Chern class $e=0$ or -1 and all possible values of the second Chern class $n$ on the projective 3-space. The generalized null correlation bundles constituting open dense subsets of these components are defined as cohomology bundles of monads whose members are direct sums of line bundles of degrees depending on nonnegative integers $a,b,c$, where $b\ge a$ and $c>a+b$. We show that, in the wide range w…
We develop a new general method for computing the decomposition type of the normal bundle to a projective rational curve. This method is then used to detect and explain an example of a Hilbert scheme that parametrizes all the rational curves in $\mathbb{P}^s$ with a given decomposition type of the normal bundle and that has exactly two irreducible components. This gives a negative answer to the very old question whether such Hilbert schemes are always irreducible. We also characterize smooth non-degenerate rational curves contained in rational normal scroll surfaces in terms of the splitting t…
The stable rationality of components of the moduli space of (unparametrized) rational curves in projective $n$-space with fixed normal bundle is proved, provided these components dominate the moduli space of immersed rational curves in the plane.
Let C be a smooth complex projective curve of genus at least 2 and let M be the moduli space of rank 2, stable vector bundles on C, with fixed determinant of degree 1. For any k>1, we find two irreducible components of the space of rational curves of degree k on M. One component, which we call the nice component has the property that the general element is a very free curve if k is sufficiently large. The other component has the general element a free curve. Both components have the expected dimension and their maximal rationally connected fibration is the Jacobian of the curve C.
We construct the canonical structure of an irreducible projective variety on the set of connected curves of degree $d$ in $\Bbb P^n$ with rational components (some components can be multiple). The set of rational curves is open subset in the Zariski topology under this structure.
An endomorphism $f$ of a projective variety X is polarized (resp. quasi-polarized) if $f^*H$ is linearly equivalent to $qH$ for some ample (resp. nef and big) Cartier divisor $H$ and integer $q > 1$. First, we use cone analysis to show that a quasi-polarized endomorphism is always polarized, and the polarized property descends via any equivariant dominant rational map. Next, we show that a suitable maximal rationally connected fibration (MRC) can be made $f$-equivariant using a construction of N. Nakayama, that $f$ descends to a polarized endomorphism of the base Y of this MRC and that this Y …
We prove several classification results for the components of the moduli space of rational curves on a smooth Fano threefold. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Batyrev on the growth of the number of components as the degree increases. The key to our approach is Geometric Manin's Conjecture which predicts the number of components parameterizing free curves.
Let $M(2,\textbf{\underline{w}},χ)$ be the moduli space of rank $2$ torsion-free sheaves over a reducible nodal curve with each component having utmost two nodal singularities. We show that in each component of $M(2,\textbf{\underline{w}},χ)$, the closure of rank $2$ vector bundles with fixed determinant is rational.
We completely describe the components of expected dimension of the Hilbert Scheme of rational curves of fixed degree $k$ in the moduli space ${\rm SU}_{C}(r,L)$ of semistable vector bundles of rank $r$ and determinant $L$ on a curve $C$. We show that for every $k \geq 1$ there are ${\rm gcd}(r, °L)$ unobstructed components. In addition, if $k$ is divisible by $r_1(r-r_1)(g-1)$ for $1\le r_1\le r-1$, there is an additional obstructed component of the expected dimension for each such $r_1$. We construct families of obstructed components and show that their generic point is not the generic vector…
The Gröbner stratum of a monomial ideal $\id{j}$ is an affine variety that parametrizes the family of all ideals having $\id{j}$ as initial ideal (with respect to a fixed term ordering). The Gröbner strata can be equipped in a natural way of a structure of homogeneous variety and are in a close connection with Hilbert schemes of subvarieties in the projective space $\PP^n$. Using properties of the Gröbner strata we prove some sufficient conditions for the rationality of components of $\hilb_{p(z)}^n$. We show for instance that all the smooth, irreducible components in $\hilb_{p(z)}^n$ (or in i…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective Fano variety over the complex numbers. We study the moduli spaces of rational curves on $X$ using the perspective of Manin's Conjecture. In particular, we bound the dimension and number of components of spaces of rational curves on $X$. We propose a Geometric Manin's Conjecture predicting the growth rate of a counting function associated to the irreducible components of these moduli spaces.
Let $Y$ be a smooth rational surface and let $D$ be a cycle of rational curves on $Y$ which is an anticanonical divisor, i.e. an element of $|-K_Y|$. Looijenga studied the geometry of such surfaces $Y$ in case $D$ has at most five components and identified a geometrically significant subset $R$ of the divisor classes of square -2 orthogonal to the components of $D$. Motivated by recent work of Gross, Hacking, and Keel on the global Torelli theorem for pairs $(Y,D)$, we attempt to generalize some of Looijenga's results in case $D$ has more than five components. In particular, given an integral …
It is well known that an implicit equation of the offset to a rational planar curve can be computed by removing the extraneous components of the resultant of two certain polynomials computed from the parametrization of the curve. Furthermore, it is also well known that the implicit equation provided by the non-extraneous component of this resultant has at most two irreducible factors. In this paper, we complete the algebraic description of this resultant by showing that the multiplicity of the factors corresponding to the offset can be computed in advance. In particular, when the parametrizati…
Fermat Last Theorem, which inspired mathematicians during 300 years, is proved by Andrew Wiles. Even among mathematicians there is a narrow circle of specialists, who can read this proof and understand all details. Is it a reason for pessimism? No, since arithmetics if entire numbers contains broad variety of problems with a simple statement, which might be not less intricate. One of them arises in elementary geometry.
We shall show that the variety of minimal rational tangents on a complete toric manifold X is linear and minimal components in RatCurves^n(X) corresponds bijectively to some special primitive collections in the fan defining X.
Let $(X,D)$ be a pair where $X$ is a projective variety. We study in detail how the behavior of rational curves on $X$ as well as the positivity of $-(K_X+D)$ and $D$ influence the behavior of rational curves on $D$. In particular we give criteria for uniruledness and rational connectedness of components of $D$.
