We consider a class of stable smoothable n-dimensional varieties, the analogs of stable curves. Assuming the minimal model program in dimension n+1, we prove that this class is bounded. From Kollar's method of constructing projective moduli spaces we get as a corollary that minimal model program in dimension n+1 implies the existence of a projective coarse moduli space for stable smoothable n-folds.
It is conjectured that the base varieties of the Iitaka fibrations are bounded when the Iitaka volumes are bounded above. We confirm this conjecture for Iitaka $ε$-lc Fano type fibrations.
This paper proposes the use of $F$-split and globally $F$-regular conditions in the pursuit of BAB type results in positive characteristic. The main technical work comes in the form of a detailed study of threefold Mori fibre spaces over positive dimensional bases. As a consequence we prove the main theorem, which reduces birational boundedness for a large class of varieties to the study of prime Fano varieties.
We investigate birational boundedness of Fano varieties and Fano fibrations. We establish an inductive step towards birational boundedness of Fano fibrations via conjectures related to boundedness of Fano varieties and Fano fibrations. As corollaries, we provide approaches towards birational boundedness and boundedness of anti-canonical volumes of varieties of $ε$-Fano type. Furthermore, we show birational boundedness of $3$-folds of $ε$-Fano type.
We prove that the r-th pluricanonical maps of threefolds of general type have birationally bounded fibers if $r\geqslant 2$. Similarly, we prove that the r-th pluricanonical maps of fourfolds of general type have birationally bounded fibers if $r\geqslant 4$. We extend these results to higher dimensions in terms of constants arising naturally from the birational geometry of varieties of general type.
The article has two parts. The first part is devoted to proving a singular version of the logarithmic Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano vanishing theorem of Esnault and Viehweg. This is then used to prove other vanishing theorems. In the second part these vanishing theorems are used to prove an Arakelov-Parshin type boundedness result for families of canonically polarized varieties with rational Gorenstein singularities.
This survey paper reports on work of Birkar, who confirmed a long-standing conjecture of Alexeev and Borisov-Borisov: Fano varieties with mild singularities form a bounded family once their dimension is fixed. Following Prokhorov-Shramov, we explain how this boundedness result implies that birational automorphism groups of projective spaces satisfy the Jordan property, answering a question of Serre in the positive.
We show that fixed dimensional klt weak Fano pairs with alpha-invariants and volumes bounded away from $0$ and the coefficients of the boundaries belong to the set of hyperstandard multiplicities $Φ(\mathscr{R})$ associated to a fixed finite set $\mathscr{R}$ form a bounded family. We also show $α(X,B)^{d-1}\mathrm{vol}(-(K_X+B))$ are bounded from above for all klt weak Fano pairs $(X,B)$ of a fixed dimension $d$.
We give two kinds of generalizations of Arakelov type inequalities for higher dimensional families. These results give higher dimensional generalizations (in both fibers and bases) of the weakly boundedness in Paršin-Arakelov's reformulation of the geometric Shafarevich conjecture. As a consequence, we deduce the following results. Hyperbolicity: We give an alternative proof (using the theory of degeneration of Hodge structure) to the hyperbolicity (in Paršin-Arakelov's reformulation, i.e. Viehweg's hyperbolicity conjecture) of the base of a family with maximal variation whose general fibers a…
We call a flag variety admissible if its automorphism group is the projective general linear group. (This holds in most cases.) Let $K$ be a field of characteristic $0$, containing all roots of unity. Let the $K$-variety $X$ be a form of an admissible flag variety. We prove that $X$ is either ruled, or the automorphism group of $X$ is bounded, meaning that, there exists a constant $C\in\mathbb{N}$ such that if $G$ is a finite subgroup of $Aut_K(X)$, then the cardinality of $G$ is smaller than $C$.
We prove that there are finitely many families, up to isomorphism in codimension one, of elliptic Calabi-Yau manifolds $Y\rightarrow X$ with a rational section, provided that $\dim(Y)\leq 5$ and $Y$ is not of product-type. As a consequence, we obtain that there are finitely many possibilities for the Hodge diamond of such manifolds. The result follows from log birational boundedness of klt pairs $(X, Δ)$ with $K_X+Δ$ numerically trivial and not of product-type, in dimension at most $4$.
In this paper, we generalise the theory of complements to log canonical log fano varieties and prove boundedness of complements for them in dimension less than or equal to 3. We also prove some boundedness results for the canonical index of sdlt log Calabi-Yau varieties in dimension 2.
We answer an open question concerning the boundedness of canonical fiber spaces in high dimensions and prove the following: for any set of integers $n\geq 3$, $0<d<n$ and $N>0$, there exists a nonsingular projective $n$-fold $X$ of general type so that $X$ is canonically fibred by $d$-dimensional varieties $F$ with $p_g(F)\geq N$. This disproves the desired boundedness parallel to Beauville's boundedness theorem in the surface case.
We study log canonical thresholds (also called global log canonical threshold or $α$-invariant) of $\mathbb{R}$-linear systems. We prove existence of positive lower bounds in different settings, in particular, proving a conjecture of Ambro. We then show that the Borisov-Alexeev-Borisov conjecture holds, that is, given a natural number $d$ and a positive real number $ε$, the set of Fano varieties of dimension $d$ with $ε$-log canonical singularities forms a bounded family. This implies that birational automorphism groups of rationally connected varieties are Jordan which in particular answers a…
We prove that for any e>0, there exists only finitely many e-log terminal spherical Fano varieties of fixed dimension. We also introduce an invariant of a spherical subgroup H in a reductive group G which measures how nice an equivariant Fano compactification G/H there exists.
We show that $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties of fixed dimension with anti-canonical degrees and alpha-invariants bounded from below form a bounded family. As a corollary, K-semistable $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties of fixed dimension with anti-canonical degrees bounded from below form a bounded family.
In this note, we survey some recent developments in birational geometry concerning the boundedness of algebraic varieties. We delineate a strategy to extend some of these results to the case of generalized pairs, first introduced by Birkar and Zhang, when the associated log canonical divisor is ample, and the volume is fixed. In this context, we show a version of deformation invariance of plurigenera for generalized pairs. We conclude by discussing an application to the boundedness of varieties of Kodaira dimension $κ(X)=\dim(X)-1$.
We prove a conjecture of Batryev which states that the family of all Fano varieties with kawamata log terminal singularities and fixed index, forms a bounded family.
The Tate conjecture for divisors on varieties over number fields is equivalent to finiteness of $\ell$-primary torsion in the Brauer group. We show that this finiteness is actually uniform in one-dimensional families for varieties that satisfy the Tate conjecture for divisors -- e.g. abelian varieties and $K3$ surfaces.
We prove that if f is a self-map of an algebraic variety over a field K, then under certain conditions on X, f and K the set of possible periods of K-valued periodic points of f is finite.
We investigate boundedness results for families of holomorphic symplectic varieties up to birational equivalence. We prove the analogue of Zarhin's trick by for $K3$ surfaces by constructing big line bundles of low degree on certain moduli spaces of stable sheaves, and proving birational versions of Matsusaka's big theorem for holomorphic symplectic varieties. As a consequence of these results, we give a new geometric proof of the Tate conjecture for $K3$ surfaces over finite fields of characteristic at least $5$, and a simple proof of the Tate conjecture for $K3$ surfaces with Picard number a…
We show that the number of deformation types of canonically polarized manifolds over an arbitrary variety with proper singular locus is finite, and that this number is uniformly bounded in any finite type family of base varieties. As a corollary we show that a direct generalization of the geometric version of Shafarevich's original conjecture holds for infinitesimally rigid families of canonically polarized varieties.
In this paper, we prove the boundedness of foliated surfaces $(X,\mathscr{F})$ which are minimal partial du Val resolutions of canonical models $(X_c,\mathscr{F}_c)$ of general type. For applications, we show the boundedness of non-cusp singularities on canonical models of foliated surfaces of general type and the effective generation on the complement of the cusp singularities.
In this paper we investigate the geometry of projective varieties polarised by ample and more generally nef and big Weil divisors. First we study birational boundedness of linear systems. We show that if $X$ is a projective variety of dimension $d$ with $ε$-lc singularities for $ε>0$, and if $N$ is a nef and big Weil divisor on $X$ such that $N-K_X$ is pseudo-effective, then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d,ε$. This is key to proving various other results. For example, it implies that if $N$ is a big Weil divisor (not necessaril…
We introduce an approach of Riemann--Roch theorem to the boundedness problem of minimal log discrepancies in fixed dimension. After reducing it to the case of a Gorenstein terminal singularity, firstly we prove that its minimal log discrepancy is bounded if either multiplicity or embedding dimension is bounded. Secondly we recover the characterisation of a Gorenstein terminal three-fold singularity by Reid, and the precise boundary of its minimal log discrepancy by Markushevich, without explicit classification. Finally we provide the precise boundary for a special four-fold singularity, whose …

We study finite $p$-subgroups of birational automorphism groups. By virtue of boundedness theorem of Fano varieties, we prove that there exists a constant $R(n)$ such that a rationally connected variety of dimension $n$ over an algebraically closed field is rational if its birational automorphism group contains a $p$-subgroups of maximal rank for $p > R(n)$. Some related applications on Jordan property are discussed.
Let $Γ$ be a finite set, and $X\ni x$ a fixed klt germ. For any lc germ $(X\ni x,B:=\sum_{i} b_iB_i)$ such that $b_i\in Γ$, Nakamura's conjecture, which is equivalent to the ACC conjecture for minimal log discrepancies for fixed germs, predicts that there always exists a prime divisor $E$ over $X\ni x$, such that $a(E,X,B)={\rm{mld}}(X\ni x,B)$, and $a(E,X,0)$ is bounded from above. We extend Nakamura's conjecture to the setting that $X\ni x$ is not necessarily fixed and $Γ$ satisfies the DCC, and show it holds for surfaces. We also find some sufficient conditions for the boundedness of $a(E,X…
We construct klt projective varieties with ample canonical class and the smallest known volume. We also find exceptional klt Fano varieties with the smallest known anticanonical volume. We conjecture that our examples have the smallest volume in every dimension, and we give low-dimensional evidence for that. In order to improve on earlier examples, we are forced to consider weighted hypersurfaces that are not quasi-smooth. We show that our Fano varieties are exceptional by computing their global log canonical threshold (or $α$-invariant) exactly; it is extremely large, roughly $2^{2^n}$ in dim…
We investigate families of minimal rational curves on Schubert varieties, their Bott-Samelson desingularizations, and their generalizations constructed by Nicolas Perrin in the minuscule case. In particular, we describe the minimal families on small resolutions of minuscule Schubert varieties.
We study the birational boundedness of special fibers of log Calabi-Yau fibrations and Fano fibrations. We show that for a locally stable family of Fano varieties or polarised log Calabi-Yau pairs over a curve, if the general fiber satisfies some natural boundedness conditions, then every irreducible component of the special fiber is birationally bounded.
It is well known that one can find a rational normal curve in $\mathbb P^n$ through $n+3$ general points. We prove a generalization of this to higher dimensional varieties, showing that smooth varieties of minimal degree can be interpolated through points and linear spaces.
Let $X$ be a Gorenstein minimal projective 3-fold with at worst locally factorial terminal singularities. Suppose the canonical map is of fiber type. Denote by $F$ a smooth model of a generic irreducible component in fibers of the canonical map of $X$ and so $F$ is a smooth curve or a smooth surface. The main result of the paper is that there is a computable constant $K$ (independent of $X$) such that $g(F)\leq 647$ or $p_g(F)\leq 38$ whenever $p_g(X)\geq K$. The method heavily relies on both a Noether type of inequality and a Miyaoka-Yau inequality and that is the reason we only treat a Goren…
Demailly's conjecture, which is a consequence of the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture on varieties of general type, states that an algebraically hyperbolic complex projective variety is Kobayashi hyperbolic. Our aim is to provide evidence for Demailly's conjecture by verifying several predictions it makes. We first define what an algebraically hyperbolic projective variety is, extending Demailly's definition to (not necessarily smooth) projective varieties over an arbitrary algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and we prove that this property is stable under extensions of algebraic…
We classify the Ulrich vector bundles of arbitrary rank on smooth projective varieties of minimal degree. In the process, we prove the stability of the sheaves of relative differentials on rational scrolls.
We describe the Minimal Model Program in the family of $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein projective horospherical varieties, by studying a family of polytopes defined from the moment polytope of a Cartier divisor of the variety we begin with. In particular, we generalize the results on MMP in toric varieties due to M. Reid, and we complete the results on MMP in spherical varieties due to M. Brion in the case of horospherical varieties.
In a previous work, we described the Minimal Model Program in the family of $\Qbb$-Gorenstein projective horospherical varieties, by studying certain continuous changes of moment polytopes of polarized horospherical varieties. Here, we summarize the results of the previous work and we explain how to generalize them in order to describe the Log Minimal Model Program for pairs $(X,\D)$ when $X$ is a projective horospherical variety.
We give a sufficient condition for the termination of flips. Then we discuss a semi-stable minimal model program for varieties with (numerically) trivial canonical divisor as an application. We also treat a slight refinement of dlt blow-ups.
