If H is a Hopf algebra whose square of the antipode is the identity, $v\inł(V)\otimes H$ is a corepresentation, and $π:H\toł(W)$ is a representation, then $u=(id\otimesπ)v$ satisfies the equation $(t\otimes id)u^{-1}=((t\otimes id)u)^{-1}$ of the vertex models for subfactors. A universal construction shows that any solution $u$ of this equatio n arises in this way. A more elaborate construction shows that there exists a ``minimal'' triple $(H,v,π)$ satisfying $(id\otimesπ)v=u$. This paper is devoted to the study of this latter construction of Hopf algebras. If $u$ is unitary we construct a $\c^*$-norm on $H$ and we find a new description of the standard invariant of the subfactor associated to $u$. We discuss also the ``twisted'' (i.e. $S^2\neq id$) case.
For a finite-index $\mathrm{II}_1$ subfactor $N \subset M$, we prove the existence of a universal Hopf $\ast$-algebra (or, a discrete quantum group in the analytic language) acting on $M$ in a trace-preserving fashion and fixing $N$ pointwise. We call this Hopf $\ast$-algebra the quantum Galois group for the subfactor and compute it in some examples of interest, notably for arbitrary irreducible finite-index depth-two subfactors. Along the way, we prove the existence of universal acting Hopf algebras for more general structures (tensors in enriched categories), in the spirit of recent work by …
We characterize finite index depth 2 inclusions of type II_1 factors in terms of actions of weak Kac algebras and weak C*-Hopf algebras. If N\subset M \subset M_1 \subset M_2 \subset ... is the Jones tower constructed from such an inclusion N\subset M, then B=M^\prime \cap M_2 has a natural structure of a weak C*-Hopf algebra and there is a minimal action of B on M_1 such that M is the fixed point subalgebra of M_1, and M_2 is isomorphic to the crossed product of M_1 and B. This extends the well-known results for irreducible depth 2 inclusions.
We construct inclusions of the form $(B_0\otimes P)^G\subset (B_1\otimes P)^G$, where $G$ is a compact quantum group of Kac type acting on an inclusion of finite dimensional $\c^*$-algebras $B_0\subset B_1$ and on a $II_1$ factor $P$. Under suitable assumptions on the actions of $G$, this is a subfactor, whose Jones to er and standard invariant can be computed by using techniques of A. Wassermann. The subfactors associated to subgroups of compact groups, to projective representations of compact groups, to finite quantum groups, to finitely generated discrete groups, to vertex models and to spi…
We give a survey of the theory of finite quantum groupoids (weak Hopf algebras), including foundations of the theory and applications to finite depth subfactors, dynamical deformations of quantum groups, and invariants of knots and 3-manifolds.
We consider commuting squares of finite dimensional von Neumann algebras having the algebra of complex numbers in the lower left corner. Examples include the vertex models, the spin models (in the sense of subfactor theory) and the commuting squares associated to finite dimensional Kac algebras. To any such commuting square we associate a compact Kac algebra and we compute the corresponding subfactor and its standard invariant in terms of it.
We study the four infinite families KA(n), KB(n), KD(n), KQ(n) of finite dimensional Hopf (in fact Kac) algebras constructed respectively by A. Masuoka and L. Vainerman: isomorphisms, automorphism groups, self-duality, lattices of coideal subalgebras. We reduce the study to KD(n) by proving that the others are isomorphic to KD(n), its dual, or an index 2 subalgebra of KD(2n). We derive many examples of lattices of intermediate subfactors of the inclusions of depth 2 associated to those Kac algebras, as well as the corresponding principal graphs, which is the original motivation. Along the way,…
In present paper, some properties of Hopf action on vertex algebras will be given. We prove that $V#H$ is an $\mathcal{S}$-local vertex algebra but it is not a vertex algebra when $V$ is an $H$-module vertex algebra. In addition, we extend the $\mathcal{S}$-locality to the quantum vertex algebras.
Jones and Penneys showed that a finite depth subfactor planar algebra embeds in the bipartite graph planar algebra of its principal graph, via a Markov towers of algebras approach. We relate several equivalent perspectives on the notion of module over a subfactor planar algebra, and show that a Markov tower is equivalent to a module over the Temperley-Lieb-Jones planar algebra. As a corollary, we obtain a classification of semisimple pivotal C* modules over Temperley-Lieb-Jones in terms of pointed graphs with a Frobenius-Perron vertex weighting. We then generalize the Markov towers of algebras…
A pre-subgroup of a multiplicative unitary $V$ on a finite dimensionnal Hilbert space $H$ is a vector line $L$ in $H$ such that $V(L\otimes L)=L\otimes L$. We show that there are finitely many pre-subgroups, give a Lagrange theorem and generalize the construction of a `bi-crossed product'. Moreover, we establish bijections between pre-subgroups and coideal subalgebras of the Hopf algebra associated with $V$, and therefore with the intermediate subfactors of the associated (depth two) inclusions. Finally, we show that the pre-subgroups classify the subobjects of $(H,V)$.
The Hopf actions on vertex operator algebras are investigated. If the action is semisimple, a Schur-Weyl type decomposition is obtained. When the Hopf algebra is finite dimensional and the action is faithful, the action is a group action. Moreover if the Hopf algebra is finite dimensional and the action is semisimple and inner faithful, the action is also a group action. In this case, inner faithfulness is equivalent to faithfulness.
We bring together ideas in analysis of Hopf *-algebra actions on II_1 subfactors of finite Jones index and algebraic characterizations of Frobenius, Galois and cleft Hopf extensions to prove a non-commutative algebraic analogue of the classical theorem: a finite field extension is Galois iff it is separable and normal. Suppose N < M is a separable Frobenius extension of k-algebras split as N-bimodules with a trivial centralizer C_M(N). Let M_1 := End(M)_N and M_2 := End(M_1)_M be the endomorphism algebras in the Jones tower N < M < M_1 < M_2. We show that under depth 2 conditions on the second…
Let A be a finite dimensional Hopf algebra and (H, R) a quasitriangular bialgebra. Denote by H^*_R a certain deformation of the multiplication of H^* via R. We prove that H^*_R is a quantum commutative left H\otimes H^{op cop}-module algebra. If H is the Drinfel'd double of A then H^*_R is the Heisenberg double of A. We study the relation between H^*_R and Majid's "covariantised product". We give a formula for the canonical element of the Heisenberg double of A, solution to the pentagon equation, in terms of the R-matrix of the Drinfel'd double of A. We generalize a theorem of Jiang-Hua Lu on …
We give a new factorisable ribbon quasi-Hopf algebra U, whose underlying algebra is that of the restricted quantum group for sl(2) at a 2p'th root of unity. The representation category of U is conjecturally ribbon-equivalent to that of the triplet vertex operator algebra W(p). We obtain U via a simple current extension from the unrolled restricted quantum group at the same root of unity. The representation category of the unrolled quantum group is conjecturally equivalent to that of the singlet vertex operator algebra M(p), and our construction is parallel to extending M(p) to W(p). We illustr…
We introduce a general notion of depth two for ring homomorphism N --> M, and derive Morita equivalence of the step one and three centralizers, R = C_M(N) and C = End_{N-M}(M ø_N M), via dual bimodules and step two centralizers A = End_NM_N and B = (M ø_N M)^N, in a Jones tower above N --> M. Lu's bialgebroids End_k A' and A' ø_k {A'}^op over a k-algebra A' are generalized to left and right bialgebroids A and B with B the R-dual bialgebroid of A. We introduce Galois-type actions of A on M and B on End_NM when M_N is a balanced module. In the case of Frobenius extensions M | N, we prove an endo…
By studying ``points of the underlying quantum groups''of coquasitriangular Hopf (face) algebras, we construct ribbon categories for each lattice models without spectral parameter of both vertex and face type. Also, we give a classification of the braiding and the ribbon structure on quantized classical groups and modular tensor categories closely related to quantum SU(N)_L-invariants of 3-manifolds.
Introducing an H-Hopf algebroid structure into U_{q,p}(\widedhat{sl}_2), we investigate the vertex operators of the elliptic quantum group U_{q,p}(\widedhat{sl}_2) defined as intertwining operators of infinite dimensional U_{q,p}(\widedhat{sl}_2)-modules. We show that the vertex operators coincide with the previous results obtained indirectly by using the quasi-Hopf algebra B_{q,λ}(\hat{sl}_2). This shows a consistency of our H-Hopf algebroid structure even in the case with non-zero central element.
We study the vertex operators $Φ(z)$ associated with standard quantum groups. The element $Z = RR^{t}$ is a "Casimir operator" for quantized Kac-Moody algebras and the quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov (q-KZ) equation is interpreted as the statement $:ZΦ(z): = Φ(z)$. We study the covariance of the q-KZ equation under twisting, first within the category of Hopf algebras, and then in the wider context of quasi Hopf algebras. We obtain the intertwining operators associated with the elliptic R-matrix and calculate the two-point correlation function for the eight-vertex model.
Let H_T=C[T,T^{-1}] be the Hopf algebra of symmetries of a lattice of rank 1, or equivalently, H_T is the group algebra of a free Abelian group with one generator T. We construct conformal algebras, vertex Poisson algebras and vertex algebras with H_T as symmetry. For example, the Hamiltonian structure for the infinite Toda lattice gives rise to an H_T-vertex Poisson structure on a free difference algebra. Examples of H_T-vertex algebras are constructed from representations of a class of infinite dimensional Lie algebras related to H_T in the same way loop algebras are related to the Hopf alge…
The recently suggested tangle calculus for knot polynomials is intimately related to topological string considerations and can help to build the HOMFLY-PT invariants from the topological vertices. We discuss this interplay in the simplest example of the Hopf link and link $L_{8n8}$. It turns out that the resolved conifold with four different representations on the four external legs, on the topological string side, is described by a special projection of the four-component link $L_{8n8}$, which reduces to the Hopf link colored with two composite representations. Thus, this provides the first e…
We construct quasi-Hopf algebras quantizing double extensions of the Manin pairs of Drinfeld, associated to a curve with a meromorphic differential, and the Lie algebra sl(2). This construction makes use of an analysis of the vertex relations for the quantum groups obtained in our earlier work, PBW-type results and computation of $R$-matrices for them; its key step is a factorization of the twist operator relating ``conjugated'' versions of these quantum groups.
Assuming the existence of the L-operators, we study the Hopf algebroid structure of U_{q,p}(B_N^{(1)}). As an application, we derive the type I and II vertex operators, which intertwine the U_{q,p}(B_N^{(1)})-modules of generic level, by assuming some analytic properties of the L-operators. For the level-1 case, we construct their free field realizations and show that the results satisfy the desired commutation relations with coefficients given by the elliptic dynamical R-matrices of the B_N^{(1)} type.
The Yang-Baxter equation admits two classes of elliptic solutions, the vertex type and the face type. On the basis of these solutions, two types of elliptic quantum groups have been introduced (Foda et al., Felder). Fronsdal made a penetrating observation that both of them are quasi-Hopf algebras, obtained by twisting the standard quantum affine algebra U_q(g). In this paper we present an explicit formula for the twistors in the form of an infinite product of the universal R matrix of U_q(g). We also prove the shifted cocycle condition for the twistors, thereby completing Fronsdal's findings. …
We generalise gauge theory on a graph so that the gauge group becomes a finite-dimensional ribbon Hopf algebra, the graph becomes a ribbon graph, and gauge-theoretic concepts such as connections, gauge transformations and observables are replaced by linearised analogues. Starting from physical considerations, we derive an axiomatic definition of Hopf-algebra gauge theory, including locality conditions under which the theory for a general ribbon graph can be assembled from local data in the neighbourhood of each vertex. For a vertex neighbourhood with n incoming edge ends, the algebra of non-co…
We introduce a twisted quantum affine algebra associated to each simply laced finite dimensional simple Lie algebra. This new algebra is a Hopf algebra with a Drinfeld-type comultiplication. We obtain this algebra by considering its vertex representation. The vertex representation quantizes the twisted vertex operators of Lepowsky-Wilson and Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman. We also introduce a twisted quantum loop algebra for the Kac-Moody case and give its level one representation.
We extend the bicharacter construction of quantum vertex algebras first proposed by Borcherds to the case of super Hopf algebras. We give a bicharacter description of the charged free fermion super vertex algebra, which allows us to construct different quantizations of it in the sense of $H_D$-quantum vertex algebras, or specializations to Etingof-Kazhdan quantum vertex algebras. We give formulas for the analytic continuation of product of fields, the operator product expansion and the normal ordered product in terms of the super-bicharacters.
The elimination theorem for free Lie algebras, a general principle which describes the structure of a free Lie algebra in terms of free Lie subalgebras, has been recently used by E. Jurisich to prove that R. Borcherds' ``Monster Lie algebra'' has certain large free Lie subalgebras, illuminating part of Borcherds' proof that the moonshine module vertex operator algebra obeys the Conway-Norton conjectures. In the present expository note, we explain how the elimination theorem has a very simple and natural generalization to, and formulation in terms of, Hopf algebras. This fact already follows fr…
In previous work the authors introduced a new class of modular quasi-Hopf algebras $D^ω(G, A)$ associated to a finite group $G$, a central subgroup $A$, and a $3$-cocycle $ω\in Z^3(G, C^x)$. In the present paper we propose a description of the class of orbifold models of rational vertex operator algebras whose module category is tensor equivalent to $D^ω(G, A)$-mod. The paper includes background on quasi-Hopf algebras and a discussion of some relevant orbifolds.
The main result is that the category of ordinary modules of an affine vertex operator algebra of a simply laced Lie algebra at admissible level is rigid and thus a braided fusion category. If the level satisfies a certain coprime property then it is even a modular tensor category. In all cases open Hopf links coincide with the corresponding normalized S-matrix entries of torus one-point functions. This is interpreted as a Verlinde formula beyond rational vertex operator algebras. A preparatory Theorem is a convenient formula for the fusion rules of rational principal W-algebras of any type.
We define a new class of quantum vertex algebras, based on the Hopf algebra $H_D=\mathbb{C}[D]$ of "infinitesimal translations" generated by $D$. Besides the braiding map describing the obstruction to commutativity of products of vertex operators, $H_D$-quantum vertex algebras have as main new ingredient a "translation map" that describes the obstruction of vertex operators to satisfying translation covariance. The translation map also appears as obstruction to the state-field correspondence being a homomorphism. We use a bicharacter construction of Borcherds to construct a large class of $H_D…
The usual vertex algebras have as underlying symmetry the Hopf algebra $H_D=\mathbb C[D]$ of infinitesimal translations. We show that it is possible to replace $H_D$ by another symmetry algebra $H_T=\mathbb C[T,T\inv]$, the group algebra of the Abelian group generated by $T$. $H_T$ is the algebra of symmetries of a lattice of rank 1, and the construction gives a class of vertex algebras related to the Infinite Toda Lattice in the same way as the usual $H_D$-vertex algebras are related to Korteweg-de Vries hierarchies.
We consider the representations of Hopf algebras involved in some physical models, namely, factorizable S-matrix models (FSM's), one-dimensional quantum spin chains (QSC's) and statistical vertex models (SVM's). These physical representations have definite hermiticity assignments and lead to star structures on the corresponding Hopf algebras. It turns out that for FSM's and the quantum mechanical time-evolution of QSC's the corresponding stars are compatible with the Hopf structures. However, in the case of statistical models the resulting star structure is not a Hopf one but what we call a tw…
We find and classify all bialgebras and Hopf algebras or `quantum groups' of dimension $\le 4$ over the field $\Bbb F_2=\{0,1\}$. We summarise our results as a quiver, where the vertices are the inequivalent algebras and there is an arrow for each inequivalent bialgebra or Hopf algebra built from the algebra at the source of the arrow and the dual of the algebra at the target of the arrow. There are 314 distinct bialgebras, and among them 25 Hopf algebras with at most one of these from one vertex to another. We find a unique smallest noncommutative and noncocommutative one, which is moreover s…
The $\mathcal{B}_p$-algebras are a family of vertex operator algebras parameterized by $p\in \mathbb Z_{\geq 2}$. They are important examples of logarithmic CFTs and appear as chiral algebras of type $(A_1, A_{2p-3})$ Argyres-Douglas theories. The first member of this series, the $\mathcal{B}_2$-algebra, are the well-known symplectic bosons also often called the $βγ$ vertex operator algebra. We study categories related to the $\mathcal{B}_p$ vertex operator algebras using their conjectural relation to unrolled restricted quantum groups of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$. These categories are braided, rigid …
Within the framework of the discrete Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten theory we analyze the structure of vertex operators on a lattice. In particular, the lattice analogues of operator product expansions and braid relations are discussed. As the main physical application, a rigorous construction for the discrete counterpart g_n of the group valued field g(x) is provided. We study several automorphisms of the lattice algebras including discretizations of the evolution in the WZNW model. Our analysis is based on the theory of modular Hopf algebras and its formulation in terms of universal elements. Al…
We discuss shuffle identities between Feynman graphs using the Hopf algebra structure of perturbative quantum field theory. For concrete exposition, we discuss vertex function in massless Yukawa theory.
We study relationships between the restricted unrolled quantum group $\overline{U}_q^H(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ at $2r$-th root of unity $q=e^{πi/r}, r \geq 2$, and the singlet vertex operator algebra $\mathcal M(r)$. We use deformable families of modules to efficiently compute $(1, 1)$-tangle invariants colored with projective modules of $\overline{U}_q^H(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$. These relate to the colored Alexander tangle invariants studied in [ADO, M1]. It follows that the regularized asymptotic dimensions of characters of $\mathcal M(r)$ coincide with the corresponding modified traces of open Hopf lin…
We construct a large family of ribbon quasi-Hopf algebras related to small quantum groups, with a factorizable R-matrix. Our main purpose is to obtain non-semisimple modular tensor categories for quantum groups at even roots of unity, where typically the initial representation category is not even braided. Our quasi-Hopf algebras are built from modules over the twisted Drinfeld double via a universal construction, but we also work out explicit generators and relations, and we prove that these algebras are modularizations of the quantum group extensions with R-matrices listed in [LO17]. As an a…
We introduce a family of factorisable ribbon quasi-Hopf algebras $Q(N)$ for $N$ a positive integer: as an algebra, $Q(N)$ is the semidirect product of $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{Z}_2$ with the direct sum of a Grassmann and a Clifford algebra in $2N$ generators. We show that $Rep Q(N)$ is ribbon equivalent to the symplectic fermion category $SF(N)$ that was computed by the third author from conformal blocks of the corresponding logarithmic conformal field theory. The latter category in turn is conjecturally ribbon equivalent to representations of $V_{ev}$, the even part of the symplectic fermion vertex…
The boson-fermion correspondences are an important phenomena on the intersection of several areas in mathematical physics: representation theory, vertex algebras and conformal field theory, integrable systems, number theory, cohomology. Two such correspondences are well known: the types A and B (and their super extensions). As a main result of this paper we present a new boson-fermion correspondence, of type D-A. Further, we define a new concept of twisted vertex algebra of order $N$, which generalizes super vertex algebra. We develop the bicharacter construction which we use for constructing …
Given a non-semisimple braided tensor category, with oplax tensor functors from known braided tensor categories, we ask : How does this knowledge characterize the tensor product and the braiding? We develop tools that address this question. In particular we prove that the associator is fixed by the oplax tensor functors, and we show that a distinguished role is played by the coalgebra structure on the image of theses tensor functors. Our setup constrains the form of quasi bialgebras appearing in the logarithmic Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture and it applies in particular to the representation categ…
The N-variable Hopf algebra introduced by Brouder, Fabretti, and Krattenaler (BFK) in the context of non-commutative Lagrange inversion can be identified with the inverse of the incidence algebra of N-colored interval partitions. The (BFK) antipode and its reflection determine the (generally distinct) left and right inverses of power series with non-commuting coefficients and N non-commuting variables. As in the case of the Faa di Bruno Hopf algebra, there is an analogue of the Zimmermann cancellation formula. The summands of the (BFK) antipode can indexed by the depth first ordering of vertic…
Huang, Lepowsky and Zhang have developed a module theory for vertex operator algebras that endows suitably chosen module categories with the structure of braided monoidal categories. Included in the theory is a functor which assigns to discretely strongly graded modules a contragredient module, obtained as a gradewise dual. In this paper, we show that this gradewise dual endows the module category with the structure of a ribbon Grothendieck-Verdier category. This duality structure is more general than that of a rigid monoidal category; in contrast to rigidity, it naturally accommodates the fac…
We construct log-modular quantum groups at even order roots of unity, both as finite-dimensional ribbon quasi-Hopf algebras and as finite ribbon tensor categories, via a de-equivariantization procedure. The existence of such quantum groups had been predicted by certain conformal field theory considerations, but constructions had not appeared until recently. We show that our quantum groups can be identified with those of Creutzig-Gainutdinov-Runkel in type A_1, and Gainutdinov-Lentner-Ohrmann in arbitrary Dynkin type. We discuss conjectural relations with vertex operator algebras at (1,p)-centr…
In a previous paper, we proposed a construction of $U_q(sl(2))$ quantum group symmetry generators for 2d gravity, where we took the chiral vertex operators of the theory to be the quantum group covariant ones established in earlier works. The basic idea was that the covariant fields in the spin $1/2$ representation themselves can be viewed as generators, as they act, by braiding, on the other fields exactly in the required way. Here we transform this construction to the more conventional description of 2d gravity in terms of Bloch wave/Coulomb gas vertex operators, thereby establishing for the…
