We find an asymptotic expression for the first eigenvalue of the biharmonic operator on a long thin rectangle. This is done by finding lower and upper bounds which become increasingly accurate with increasing length. The lower bound is found by algebraic manipulation of the operator, and the upper bound is found by minimising the quadratic form for the operator over a test space consisting of separable functions. These bounds can be used to show that the negative part of the groundstate is small.
We study the behaviour of extremal eigenvalues of the Dirichlet biharmonic operator over rectangles with a given fixed area. We begin by proving that the principal eigenvalue is minimal for a rectangle for which the ratio between the longest and the shortest side lengths does not exceed $1.066459$. We then consider the sequence formed by the minimal $k^{\rm th}$ eigenvalue and show that the corresponding sequence of minimising rectangles converges to the square as $k$ goes to infinity.
We study an eigenvalue problem for the biharmonic operator with Neumann boundary conditions on domains of Riemannian manifolds. We discuss the weak formulation and the classical boundary conditions, and we describe a few properties of the eigenvalues. Moreover, we establish upper bounds compatible with the Weyl's law under a given lower bound on the Ricci curvature.
We study the dependence of the eigenvalues of the biharmonic operator subject to Neumann boundary conditions on the Poisson's ratio. In particular, we prove that the Neumann eigenvalues are Lipschitz continuous with respect to $σ\in [0,1[$ and that all the Neumann eigenvalues tend to zero as $σ\rightarrow 1^-$. Moreover, we show that the Neumann problem defined by setting $σ=1$ admits a sequence of positive eigenvalues of finite multiplicity which are not limiting points for the Neumann eigenvalues with $σ\in[0,1[$ as $σ\rightarrow 1^-$, and which coincide with the Dirichlet eigenvalues of the…
We consider an eigenvalue problem for the biharmonic operator with Steklov-type boundary conditions. We obtain it as a limiting Neumann problem for the biharmonic operator in a process of mass concentration at the boundary. We study the dependence of the spectrum upon the domain. We show analyticity of the symmetric functions of the eigenvalues under isovolumetric perturbations and prove that balls are critical points for such functions under measure constraint. Moreover, we show that the ball is a maximizer for the first positive eigenvalue among those domains with a prescribed fixed measure.
In this paper, we consider eigenvalues of the Dirichlet biharmonic operator on a bounded domain in a hyperbolic space. We obtain universal bounds on the $(k+1)$th eigenvalue in terms of the first $k$th eigenvalue independent of the domains.
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain in $\mathbb R^2$ with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$, and let $ω_h$ be the set of points in $Ω$ whose distance from the boundary is smaller than $h$. We prove that the eigenvalues of the biharmonic operator on $ω_h$ with Neumann boundary conditions converge to the eigenvalues of a limiting problem in the form of system of differential equations on $\partialΩ$.
In this paper, we establish universal inequalities for eigenvalues of the clamped plate problem on compact submanifolds of Euclidean spaces, of spheres and of real, complex and quaternionic projective spaces. We also prove similar results for the biharmonic operator on domains of Riemannian manifolds admitting spherical eigenmaps (this includes the compact homogeneous Riemannian spaces) and nally on domains of the hyperbolic space.
We derive the equation of a free vibrating thin plate whose mass is concentrated at the boundary, namely a Steklov problem for the biharmonic operator. We provide Hadamard-type formulas for the shape derivatives of the corresponding eigenvalues and prove that balls are critical domains under volume constraint. Finally, we prove an isoperimetric inequality for the first positive eigenvalue.
We consider the eigenvalues of the biharmonic operator subject to several homogeneous boundary conditions (Dirichlet, Neumann, Navier, Steklov). We show that simple eigenvalues and elementary symmetric functions of multiple eigenvalues are real analytic, and provide Hadamard-type formulas for the corresponding shape derivatives. After recalling the known results in shape optimization, we prove that balls are always critical domains under volume constraint.
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain with $C^2$-smooth boundary in an $n$-dimensional oriented Riemannian manifold. It is well-known that for the bi-harmonic equation $Δ^2 u=0$ in $Ω$ with the $0$-Dirichlet boundary condition, there exists an infinite set $\{u_k\}$ of biharmonic functions in $Ω$ with positive eigenvalues $\{λ_k\}$ satisfying $Δu_k+ λ_k \varrho \frac{\partial u_k}{\partial ν}=0$ on the boundary $\partial Ω$. In this paper, by a new method we establish the Weyl-type asymptotic formula for the counting function of the biharmonic Stekloff eigenvalues $λ_k$.
We obtain results for the spectral optimisation of Neumann eigenvalues on rectangles in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with a measure or perimeter constraint. We show that the rectangle with measure $1$ which maximises the $k$'th Neumann eigenvalue converges to the unit square in the Hausdorff metric as $k\rightarrow \infty$. Furthermore, we determine the unique maximiser of the $k$'th Neumann eigenvalue on a rectangle with given perimeter.
We introduce the biharmonic Steklov problem on differential forms by considering suitable boundary conditions. We characterize its smallest eigenvalue and prove elementary properties of the spectrum. We obtain various estimates for the first eigenvalue, some of which involve eigenvalues of other problems such as the Dirichlet, Neumann, Robin and Steklov ones. Independently, new inequalities relating the eigenvalues of the latter problems are proved.
We provide complementary semiclassical bounds for the Riesz means $R_1(z)$ of the eigenvalues of various biharmonic operators, with a second term in the expected power of $z$. The method we discuss makes use of the averaged variational principle (AVP), and yields two-sided bounds for individual eigenvalues, which are semiclassically sharp. The AVP also yields comparisons with Riesz means of different operators, in particular Laplacians.
First non-zero Neumann eigenvalues of a rectangle and a parallelogram with the same base and area are compared in case when the height of the parallelogram is greater than the base. This result is applied to compare first non-zero Neumann eigenvalue normalized by the square of the perimeter on the parallelograms with a geometrical restriction and the square. The result is inspired by Wallace--Bolyai--Gerwien theorem. An interesting three-dimensional problem related to this theorem is proposed.
We show that eigenvalues of the Robin Laplacian with a positive boundary parameter $α$ on rectangles and unions of rectangtes satisfy Pólya-type inequalities, albeit with an exponent smaller than that of the corresponding Weyl asympotics for a fixed domain. We determine the optimal exponents in either case, showing that they are different in the two situations. Our approach to proving these results includes a characterisation of the corresponding extremal domains for the $k$th eigenvalue in regions of the $(k,α)$-plane.
This paper is a brief account of the Steklov eigenvalue problem on a 2-dimensional rectangular domain, and then on a 3-dimensional rectangular box. It is divided into four sections. Section 1 relies heavily on real analytic methods to show the existence of an eigenfunction class which always produces the first non-trivial Steklov eigenvalue on a rectangle. Section 2 lists all possible Steklov eigenfunctions on a cuboid. The very brief section 3 gives the 3-dimensional analogue of the analytic results in Section 1. The analogue is given as conjecture, but is expected to derivate from standard (…
The first two eigenvalues of the Robin Laplacian are investigated along with their gap and ratio. Conjectures by various authors for arbitrary domains are supported here by new results for rectangular boxes. Results for rectangular domains include that: the square minimizes the first eigenvalue among rectangles under area normalization, when the Robin parameter $α\in \mathbb{R}$ is scaled by perimeter; that the square maximizes the second eigenvalue for a sharp range of $α$-values; that the line segment minimizes the Robin spectral gap under diameter normalization for each $α\in \mathbb{R}$; a…
We study the localization of eigenfunctions produced by a point scatterer on a thin rectangle. We find an explicit set of eigenfunctions localized to part of the rectangle by showing that the one-dimensional Schrödinger operator with a Dirac delta potential asymptotically governs the spectral properties of the two-dimensional point scatterer. We also find the rate of localization in terms of the aspect ratio of the rectangle. In addition, we present numerical results regarding the asymptotic behavior of the localization.
We find the Courant-sharp Neumann eigenvalues of the Laplacian on some 2-rep-tile domains. In $\R^{2}$ the domains we consider are the isosceles right triangle and the rectangle with edge ratio $\sqrt{2}$ (also known as the A4 paper). In $\R^{n}$ the domains are boxes which generalize the mentioned planar rectangle. The symmetries of those domains reveal a special structure of their eigenfunctions, which we call folding\textbackslash{}unfolding. This structure affects the nodal set of the eigenfunctions, which in turn allows to derive necessary conditions for Courant-sharpness. In addition, th…
We consider the biharmonic operator subject to homogeneous boundary conditions of Neumann type on a planar dumbbell domain which consists of two disjoint domains connected by a thin channel. We analyse the spectral behaviour of the operator, characterizing the limit of the eigenvalues and of the eigenprojections as the thickness of the channel goes to zero. In applications to linear elasticity, the fourth order operator under consideration is related to the deformation of a free elastic plate, a part of which shrinks to a segment. In contrast to what happens with the classical second order cas…
We are concerned with the dependence of the lowest positive eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on the geometry of rectangles, subject to infinite-mass boundary conditions. We conjecture that the square is a global minimiser both under the area or perimeter constraints. Contrary to well-known non-relativistic analogues, we show that the present spectral problem does not admit explicit solutions. We prove partial optimisation results based on a variational reformulation and newly established lower and upper bounds to the Dirac eigenvalue. We also propose an alternative approach based on symmetries…
We introduce Robin boundary conditions for biharmonic operators, which are a model for elastically supported plates and are closely related to the study of spaces of traces of Sobolev functions. We study the dependence of the operator, its eigenvalues, and eigenfunctions on the Robin parameters. We show in particular that when the parameters go to plus infinity the Robin problem converges to other biharmonic problems, and obtain estimates on the rate of divergence when the parameters go to minus infinity. We also analyse the dependence of the operator on smooth perturbations of the domain, com…
We will discuss the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalues of Schrödinger operator with a matrix potential defined by Neumann boundary condition in $L_2^m(F)$, where $F$ is $d$-dimensional rectangle and the potential is a $m \times m$ matrix with $m\geq 2$, $d\geq 2$ , when the eigenvalues belong to the resonance domain, roughly speaking they lie near planes of diffraction. \textbf{Keywords:} Schrödinger operator, Neumann condition, Resonance eigenvalue, Perturbation theory. \textbf{AMS Subject Classifications:} 47F05, 35P15
We consider a Schrödinger Operator with a matrix potential defined in $L_2^m(F)$ by the differential expression\begin{equation*} L(ϕ(x))=(-Δ+V(x))ϕ(x) \end{equation*}and the Neumann boundary condition, where $F$ is the $d$ dimensional rectangle and $V$ is a martix potential, $m\geqslant 2, d\geqslant 2$. We obtain the asymptotic formulas of arbitrary order for the single resonance eigenvalues of the Schrödinger operator in $L_2^m(F)$.
Our main result is that if a generic convex domain in $\R^n$ collapses to a domain in $\R^{n-1}$, then the difference between the first two Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Euclidean Laplacian, known as the fundamental gap, diverges. The boundary of the domain need not be smooth, merely Lipschitz continuous. To motivate the general case, we first prove the analogous result for triangular and polygonal domains. In so doing, we prove that the first two eigenvalues of triangular domains cannot be polyhomogeneous on the moduli space of triangles without blowing up a certain point. Our results show tha…
The second eigenvalue of the Robin Laplacian is shown to be maximal for the disk among simply-connected planar domains of fixed area when the Robin parameter is scaled by perimeter in the form $α/L(Ω)$, and $α$ lies between $-2π$ and $2π$. Corollaries include Szegő's sharp upper bound on the second eigenvalue of the Neumann Laplacian under area normalization, and Weinstock's inequality for the first nonzero Steklov eigenvalue for simply-connected domains of given perimeter. The first Robin eigenvalue is maximal, under the same conditions, for the degenerate rectangle. When area normalization o…
We aim to maximize the number of first-quadrant lattice points in a convex domain with respect to reciprocal stretching in the coordinate directions. The optimal domain is shown to be asymptotically balanced, meaning that the stretch factor approaches 1 as the "radius" approaches infinity. In particular, the result implies that among all p-ellipses (or Lamé curves), the p-circle encloses the most first-quadrant lattice points as the radius approaches infinity. The case p=2 corresponds to minimization of high eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian on rectangles, and so our work generalizes a re…
We provide a direct proof of Weyl's law for the buckling eigenvalues of the biharmonic operator on a wide class of domains of $\mathbb R^d$ including bounded Lipschitz domains. The proof relies on asymptotically sharp lower and upper bounds that we develop for the Riesz mean $R_2(z)$. Lower bounds are obtained by making use of the so-called "averaged variational principle". Upper bounds are obtained in the spirit of Berezin-Li-Yau. Moreover, we state a conjecture for the second term in Weyl's law and prove its correctness in two special cases: balls in $\mathbb R^d$ and bounded intervals in $\…
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb R^2$ be a bounded planar domain, with piecewise smooth boundary $\partial Ω$. For $σ>0$, we consider the Robin boundary value problem \[ -Δf =λf, \qquad \frac{\partial f}{\partial n} + σf = 0 \mbox{ on } \partial Ω\] where $ \frac{\partial f}{\partial n} $ is the derivative in the direction of the outward pointing normal to $\partial Ω$. Let $0<λ^σ_0\leq λ^σ_1\leq \dots $ be the corresponding eigenvalues. The purpose of this paper is to study the Robin-Neumann gaps \[ d_n(σ):=λ_n^σ-λ_n^0 . \] For a wide class of planar domains we show that there is a limiting mean value, …
