Let $L$ be a free Lie algebra over a field $k$, $I$ a non-trivial proper ideal of $L$, $n>1$ an integer. The multiplicator $H_2(L/I^n,k)$ of $L/I^n$ is not finitely generated, and so in particular, $L/I^n$ is not finitely presented, even when $L/I$ is finite dimensional.
Let G be a connected real Lie group of dimension n. Then there exists a relatively compact open neighbourhood W of e in G such that for n+1 randomly chosen elements g_0,..,g_n the generated subgroup will be dense in G with probability one.
A nilpotent quotient algorithm for finitely presented Lie rings over Z (LieNQ) is described. The paper studies graded and non-graded cases separately. The algorithm computes the so-called nilpotent presentation for a finitely presented, nilpotent Lie ring. The nilpotent presentation consists of generators for the abelian group and the products---expressed as linear combinations---for pairs formed by generators. Using that presentation the word problem is decidable in $L$. Provided that the Lie ring $L$ is graded, it is possible to determine the canonical presentation for a lower central factor…
We address the question: for which collections of finite simple groups does there exist an algorithm that determines the images of an arbitrary finitely presented group that lie in the collection? We prove both positive and negative results. For a collection of finite simple groups that contains infinitely many alternating groups, or contains classical groups of unbounded dimensions, we prove that there is no such algorithm. On the other hand, for families of simple groups of Lie type of bounded rank, we obtain positive results. For example, given any fixed untwisted Lie type $X$ there is an a…
We study completions of the group algebra of a finitely generated group and relate nuclearity of such a completion to growth properties of the group. This extends previous work of Jolissaint on nuclearity of rapidly decreasing functions on a finitely generated group to more general weights than polynomial decrease. The new group algebras and their duals are studied in detail and compared to other approaches. As application we discuss the convergence of the complete growth function introduced by Grigorchuk and Nagnibeda.
We provide the first example of a finitely presented (in fact, type $F_\infty$) group with elements whose stable commutator length is algebraic and irrational, answering a question of Calegari. Our example is the lift to the real line of the \emph{golden ratio Thompson group} $T_τ$: the circle analogue of the Cleary's golden ratio Thompson group $F_τ$ which acts on the interval.
Let $G$ be a non-compact semisimple Lie group with finite centre and finitely many components. We show that any finitely generated group $Γ$ which is quasi-isometric to an irreducible lattice in $G$ has the $R_\infty$-property, namely, that there are infinitely $ϕ$-twisted conjugacy classes for every automorphism $ϕ$ of $Γ$. Also, we show that any lattice in $G$ has the $R_\infty$-property, extending our earlier result for irreducible lattices.
We explore the graded and filtered formality properties of finitely generated groups by studying the various Lie algebras over a field of characteristic 0 attached to such groups, including the Malcev Lie algebra, the associated graded Lie algebra, the holonomy Lie algebra, and the Chen Lie algebra. We explain how these notions behave with respect to split injections, coproducts, direct products, as well as field extensions, and how they are inherited by solvable and nilpotent quotients. A key tool in this analysis is the 1-minimal model of the group, and the way this model relates to the afor…
We show that every semigroup which is a finite disjoint union of copies of the free monogenic semigroup (natural numbers under addition) has linear growth. This implies that the the corresponding semigroup algebra is a PI algebra.
We exhibit a family of infinite, finitely-presented, nilpotent-by-abelian groups. Each member of this family is a solvable S-arithmetic group that is related to Baumslag-Solitar groups, and everyone of these groups has a quasi-isometry group that is virtually a product of a solvable real Lie group and a solvable p-adic Lie group. In addition, we propose a candidate for a polycyclic group whose quasi-isometry group is a solvable real Lie group, and we introduce a candidate for a quasi-isometrically rigid solvable group that is not finitely presented. We also record some conjectures on the large…
Given any finitely presented group G we find a triangular algebra such that has two presentations, one with fundamental group G and another with trivial group. Thus proving that given a collection G1,...,Gn of finitely presented groups there exist a triangular algebra A such that all Gi appear as fundamental group of some presentation of A, extending one of the result in arXiv:math/0405127v3 [math.RA]
Given a finite, connected 2-complex $X$ such that $b_2(X)\le1$ we establish two existence results for representations of the fundamental group of $X$ into compact connected Lie groups $G$, with prescribed values on certain loops. If $b_2(X)=1$ we assume $G=SO(3)$ and that the cup product on the first rational cohomology group of $X$ is non-zero.
The connection between classical model theoretical types (MT-types) and logically-geometrical types (LG-types) introduced by B. Plotkin is considered. It is proved that MT-types of two $n$-tuples in two universal algebras coincide if and only if their LG-types coincide. An algebra $H$ is called logically perfect if for every two $n$-tuples in $H$ whose types coincide, one can be sent to another by means of an automorphism of this algebra. Some sufficient condition for logically perfectness of free finitely generated algebras is given which helps to prove that finitely generated free Abelian gr…
The complex algebra of an inverse semigroup with finitely many idempotents in each $\mathcal D$-class is stably finite by a result of Munn. This can be proved fairly easily using $C^*$-algebras for inverse semigroups satisfying this condition that have a Hausdorff universal groupoid, or more generally for direct limits of inverse semigroups satisfying this condition and having Hausdorff universal groupoids. It is not difficult to see that a finitely presented inverse semigroup with a non-Hausdorff universal groupoid cannot be a direct limit of inverse semigroups with Hausdorff universal groupo…
Germs of locally homogeneous CR manifolds M can be characterized in terms of certain algebraic data, e.g., by CR-algebras. We give an explicit formula which relates the Levi form of such an M and its higher order analogues to the Lie brackets in certain finite dimensional Lie algebras. As an application we give a simple characterization of geometric properties of M such as minimality, k-nondegeneracy, holomorphic degeneracy etc. in purely algebraic terms. We present an example of a homogeneous 3-nondegenerate CR-manifold. We also determine a universal upper bound for the order k of k-nondegene…
We generalize basic results relating the associated graded Lie algebra and the holonomy Lie algebra from finitely presented, commutator-relators groups to arbitrary finitely presented groups. In the process, we give an explicit formula for the cup-product in the cohomology of a finite 2-complex, and an algorithm for computing the corresponding holonomy Lie algebra, using a Magnus expansion method. We illustrate our approach with examples drawn from a variety of group-theoretic and topological contexts, such as link groups, one-relator groups, and fundamental groups of orientable Seifert fibere…
We study conditions under which subdirect products of various types of algebraic structures are finitely generated or finitely presented. In the case of two factors, we prove general results for arbitrary congruence permutable varieties, which generalise previously known results for groups, and which apply to modules, rings, $K$-algebras and loops. For instance, if $C$ is a fiber product of $A$ and $B$ over a common quotient $D$, and if $A$, $B$ and $D$ are finitely presented, then $C$ is finitely generated. For subdirect products of more than two factors we establish a general connection with…
Does a space enjoying good finiteness properties admit an algebraic model with commensurable finiteness properties? In this note, we provide a rational homotopy obstruction for this to happen. As an application, we show that the maximal metabelian quotient of a very large, finitely generated group is not finitely presented. Using the theory of 1-minimal models, we also show that a finitely generated group $π$ admits a connected 1-model with finite-dimensional degree 1 piece if and only if the Malcev Lie algebra $\mathfrak{m}(π)$ is the lower central series completion of a finitely presented Li…
We study growth and complexity of étale groupoids in relation to growth of their convolution algebras. As an application, we construct simple finitely generated algebras of arbitrary Gelfand-Kirillov dimension $\ge 2$ and simple finitely generated algebras of quadratic growth over arbitrary fields.
