Given any finitely presented group G we find a triangular algebra such that has two presentations, one with fundamental group G and another with trivial group. Thus proving that given a collection G1,...,Gn of finitely presented groups there exist a triangular algebra A such that all Gi appear as fundamental group of some presentation of A, extending one of the result in arXiv:math/0405127v3 [math.RA]
Given a monoid defined by a presentation, and a homotopy base for the derivation graph associated to the presentation, and given an arbitrary subgroup of the monoid, we give a homotopy base (and presentation) for the subgroup. If the monoid has finite derivation type (FDT), and if under the action of the monoid on its subsets by right multiplication the strong orbit of the subgroup is finite, then we obtain a finite homotopy base for the subgroup, and hence the subgroup has FDT. As an application we prove that a regular monoid with finitely many left and right ideals has FDT if and only if all…
Given a finitely presented monoid and a homotopy base for the monoid, and given an arbitrary Schutzenberger group of the monoid, the main result of this paper gives a homotopy base, and presentation, for the Schutzenberger group. In the case that the R-class R' of the Schutzenberger group G(H) has only finitely many H-classes, and there is an element s of the multiplicative right pointwise stabilizer of H, such that under the left action of the monoid on its R-classes the intersection of the orbit of the R-class of s with the inverse orbit of R' is finite, then finiteness of the presentation a…
We introduce a new family of presentations for the quaternion groups and show that for the quaternion group of order 28, one of these presentations has non-standard second homotopy group.
We give formulae for a module presentation of the module of identities among relations for a presentation of a group, in terms of information on 0- and 1-combings of the Cayley graph. This is seen as a special case of extending a partial free crossed resolution of a group given a partial contracting homotopy of its universal cover.
The random triangular group $Γ(n,p)$ is the group given by a random group presentation with $n$ generators in which every relator of length three is present independently with probability $p$. We show that in the evolution of $Γ(n,p)$ the property of collapsing to the trivial group admits a very sharp threshold.
We give polynomial-time dynamic-programming algorithms finding the areas of words in the presentations $\langle a, b \mid a, b \rangle$ and $\langle a, b \mid a^k, b^k; \ k \in \mathbb{N} \rangle$ of the trivial group. In the first of these two cases, area was studied under the name spelling length by Majumdar, Robbins and Zyskin in the context of the design of liquid crystals. We explain how the problem of calculating it can be reinterpreted in terms of RNA-folding. In the second, area is what Jiang called width and studied when counting fixed points for self-maps of a compact surface, consid…
The random triangular group Γ(n,t) is a group given by a presentation P=<S|R>, where S is a set of n generators and R is a random set of t cyclically reduced words of length three. The asymptotic behavior of Γ(n,t) is in some respects similar to that of widely studied density random group introduced by Gromov. In particular, it is known that if t <= n^{3/2-ε} for some ε> 0, then with probability 1-o(1) Γ(n,t) is infinite and hyperbolic, while for t >= n^{3/2+ε}, with probability 1-o(1) it is trivial. In this note we show that Γ(n,t) collapses provided only that t <= C n^{3/2} for some constant…
The standard $(n, k, d)$ model of random groups is a model where the relators are chosen randomly from the set of cyclically reduced words of length $k$ on an $n$-element generating set. Gromov's density model of random groups considers the case where $n$ is fixed, and $k$ tends to infinity. We instead fix $k$, and let $n$ tend to infinity. We prove that for all $k \geq 2$ at density $d > 1/2$ a random group in this model is trivial or cyclic of order two, whilst for $d < \frac{1}{2}$ such a random group is infinite and hyperbolic. In addition we show that for $d<\frac{1}{k}$ such a random gro…
Brunnian braids have interesting relations with homotopy groups of spheres. In this work, we study the graded Lie algebra of the descending central series related to Brunnian subgroup of the pure braid group. A presentation of this Lie algebra is obtained.
We show that diagram groups can be viewed as fundamental groups of spaces of positive paths on directed 2-complexes (these spaces of paths turn out to be classifying spaces). Thus diagram groups are analogs of second homotopy groups, although diagram groups are as a rule non-Abelian. Part of the paper is a review of the previous results from this point of view. In particular, we show that the so called rigidity of the R.Thompson's group $F$ and some other groups is similar to the flat torus theorem. We find several finitely presented diagram groups (even of type F_\infty) each of which contain…
We study simplicial profinite groups with a view towards applications in profinite combinatorial group theory. This approach provides a natural framework to the concept of pro-$\mathfrak{C}$-presentation of a pro-$\mathfrak{C}$-group $G$ as a 1-truncation of its free simplicial pro-$\mathfrak{C}$-resolution. The category of simplicial pro-$\mathfrak{C}$-groups has a closed simplicial model category structure. This yields a possibility to define some old and new derived functors as left Quillen derived functors from this simplicial model category. When $\mathfrak{C}$ is L-groups, than may const…
We construct and classify all groups, given by triangular presentations associated to the smallest thick generalized quadrangle, that act simply transitively on the vertices of hyperbolic triangular buildings of the smallest non-trivial thickness. Our classification shows 23 non-isomorphic torsion free groups (obtained in an earlier work) and 168 non-isomorphic torsion groups acting on one of two possible buildings with the smallest thick generalized quadrangle as the link of each vertex. In analogy with the Euclidean case, we find both torsion and torsion free groups acting on the same buildi…
The filling length of an edge-circuit ηin the Cayley 2-complex of a finite presentation of a group is the least integer L such that there is a combinatorial null-homotopy of ηdown to a base point through loops of length at most L. We introduce similar notions in which the null-homotopy is not required to fix a basepoint, and in which the contracting loop is allowed to bifurcate. We exhibit groups in which the resulting filling invariants exhibit dramatically different behaviour to the standard notion of filling length. We also define the corresponding filling invariants for Riemannian manifold…
In the paper we give a survey on braid groups and subjects connected with them. We start with the initial definition, then we give several interpretations as well as several presentations of these groups. Burau presentation for the pure braid group and the Markov normal form are given next. Garside normal form and his solution of the conjugacy problem are presented as well as more recent results on the ordering and on the linearity of braid groups. Next topics are the generalizations of braids, their homological properties and connections with the other mathematical fields, like knot theory (v…
We introduce the concept of quasirational relation modules for discrete and pro-$p$ presentations of discrete and pro-$p$ groups and show that aspherical presentations and their subpresentations are quasirational. In the pro-$p$-case quasirationality of pro-$p$-groups with a single defining relation holds. For every quasirational (pro-$p$)relation module we construct the so called $p$-adic rationalization, which is a pro-fd-module $\overline{R}\widehat{\otimes}\mathbb{Q}_p= \varprojlim R/[R,R\mathcal{M}_n]\otimes\mathbb{Q}_p$. We provide the isomorphisms $\overline{R^{\wedge}_w}(\mathbb{Q}_p)=…
Given a free product $G$, we investigate the existence of faithful free representations of the outer automorphism group $\text{Out}(G)$, or in other words of embeddings of $\text{Out}(G)$ into $\text{Out}\left(F_m\right)$ for some $m$. This is based on a work of Bridson and Vogtmann in which they construct embeddings of $\text{Out}\left(F_n\right)$ into $\text{Out}\left(F_m\right)$ for some values of $n$ and $m$ by interpreting $\text{Out}\left(F_n\right)$ as the group of homotopy equivalences of a graph $X$ of genus $n$, and by lifting homotopy equivalences of $X$ to a characteristic abelian …
We study a class of Labelled Oriented Graph (LOG) group where the underlying graph is a tadpole graph. We show that such a group is the natural HNN extension of a cyclically presented group and investigate the relationship between the LOG group and the cyclically presented group. We relate the second homotopy groups of their presentations and show that hyperbolicity of the cyclically presented group implies solvability of the conjugacy problem for the LOG group. In the case where the label on the tail of the LOG spells a positive word in the vertices in the circuit we show that the LOGs and gr…
