The linearization coefficients for a set of orthogonal polynomials are given explicitly as a weighted sum of combinatorial objects. Positivity theorems of Askey and Szwarc are corollaries of these expansions.
We propose a new approach to the combinatorial interpretations of linearization coefficient problem of orthogonal polynomials. We first establish a difference system and then solve it combinatorially and analytically using the method of separation of variables. We illustrate our approach by applying it to determine the number of perfect matchings, derangements, and other weighted permutation problems. The separation of variables technique naturally leads to integral representations of combinatorial numbers where the integrand contains a product of one or more types of orthogonal polynomials. T…
We derive explicit formulas for the resultants and discriminants of classical quasi-orthogonal polynomials, as a full generalization of the results of Dilcher and Stolarsky (2005) and Gishe and Ismail (2008). We consider a certain system of Diophantine equations, originally designed by Hausdorff (1909) as a simplification of Hilbert's solution (1909) of Waring's problem, and then create the relationship to quadrature formulas and quasi-Hermite polynomials. We reduce these equations to the existence problem of rational points on a hyperelliptic curve associated with discriminants of quasi-Hermi…
A combinatorial theory for type $R_I$ orthogonal polynomials is given. The ingredients include weighted generalized Motzkin paths, moments, continued fractions, determinants, and histories. Several explicit examples in the Askey scheme are given.
The aim of this paper is to construct sup-exponentially localized kernels and frames in the context of classical orthogonal expansions, namely, expansions in Jacobi polynomials, spherical harmonics, orthogonal polynomials on the ball and simplex, and Hermite and Laguerre functions.
Orthogonal polynomials and expansions are studied for the weight function $h_κ^2(x) \|x\|^{2ν} (1-\|x\|^2)^{μ-1/2}$ on the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $h_κ$ is a reflection invariant function, and for related weight function on the simplex of $\mathbb{R}^d$. A concise formula for the reproducing kernels of orthogonal subspaces is derived and used to study summability of the Fourier orthogonal expansions.
For weighted $L^1$ space on the unit sphere of $\RR^{d+1}$, in which the weight functions are invariant under finite reflection groups, a maximal function is introduced and used to prove the almost everywhere convergence of orthogonal expansions in $h$-harmonics. The result applies to various methods of summability, including the de la Vallée Poussin means and the Cesàro means. Similar results are also established for weighted orthogonal expansions on the unit ball and on the simplex of $\RR^d$.
Orthogonal polynomials for a family of weight functions on $[-1,1]^2$, $$ \CW_{\a,\b,\g}(x,y) = |x+y|^{2\a+1} |x-y|^{2\b+1} (1-x^2)^\g(1-y^2)^{\g}, $$ are studied and shown to be related to the Koornwinder polynomials defined on the region bounded by two lines and a parabola. In the case of $\g = \pm 1/2$, an explicit basis of orthogonal polynomials is given in terms of Jacobi polynomials and a closed formula for the reproducing kernel is obtained. The latter is used to study the convergence of orthogonal expansions for these weight functions.
In this paper, we prove that the partial sum process of general orthogonal series is a geometric 2-rough process under the same condition as in Menshov-Rademacher Theorem. For Fourier series, the condition can be improved, and an equivalent condition on the limit function is identified.
We establish a symmetrization procedure in a context of general orthogonal expansions associated with a second order differential operator $L$, a `Laplacian'. Combined with a unified conjugacy scheme furnished in our earlier article it allows, via a suitable embedding, to associate a differential-difference `Laplacian' $\mathbb{L}$ with the initially given orthogonal system of eigenfunctions of $L$, so that the resulting extended conjugacy scheme has the natural classical shape. This means, in particular, that the related `partial derivatives' decomposing $\mathbb{L}$ are skew-symmetric in an …
Burchnall's method to invert the Feldheim-Watson linearization formula for the Hermite polynomials is extended to all polynomial families in the Askey-scheme and its $q$-analogue. The resulting expansion formulas are made explicit for several families corresponding to measures with infinite support, including the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials. An integrated version gives the possibility to give alternate expression for orthogonal polynomials with respect to a modified weight. This gives expansions for polynomials, such as Hermite, Laguerre, Meixner, Charlier, Meixner-Pollaczek and big $q…
We expand the Chebyshev polynomials and some of its linear combination in linear combinations of the q-Hermite, the Rogers (q-utraspherical) and the Al-Salam--Chihara polynomials and vice versa. We use these expansions to obtain expansions of some densities, including q-Normal and some related to it, in infinite series constructed of the products of the other density times polynomials orthogonal to it, allowing deeper analysis and discovering new properties. On the way we find an easy proof of expansion of the Poisson--Mehler kernel as well as its reciprocal. We also formulate simple rule rela…
Three $q$-versions of Lommel polynomials are studied. Included are explicit representations, recurrences, continued fractions, and connections to associated Askey--Wilson polynomials. Combinatorial results are emphasized, including a general theorem when $R_I$ moments coincide with orthogonal polynomial moments. The combinatorial results use weighted Motzkin paths, Schröder paths, and parallelogram polyominoes.
Hardy's inequality on $H^p$ spaces, $p\in(0,1]$, in the context of orthogonal expansions is investigated for general basis on a subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$ with Lebesgue measure. The obtained result is applied to various Hermite, Laguerre, and Jacobi expansions. For that purpose some delicate estimates of the higher order derivatives for the underlying functions and of the associated heat kernels are proved. Moreover, sharpness of studied Hardy's inequalities is justified by a construction of an explicit counterexample, which is adjusted to all considered settings.
Let $f_k$ be the $k$-th Fourier coefficient of a function $f$ in terms of the orthonormal Hermite, Laguerre or Jacobi polynomials. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on $f$ for the inequality $\sum_{k}|f_k|^2θ^k<\infty$ to hold with $θ>1$. As a by-product new orthogonality relations for the Hermite and Laguerre polynomials are found. The basic machinery for the proofs is provided by the theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.
Cesàro $(C,δ)$ means are studied for orthogonal expansions with respect to the weight function $\prod_{i=1}^{d}|x_i|^{2\k_i}$ on the unit sphere, and for the corresponding weight functions on the unit ball and the Jacobi weight on the simplex. A sharp pointwise estimate is established for the $(C,\d)$ kernel with $\d > -1$ and for the kernel of the projection operator, which allows us to derive the exact order for the norm of the Cesàro means and the projection operator on these domains.
The classical orthogonal polynomials (Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi) are involved in a vast number of applications in physics and engineering. When large degrees $n$ are needed, the use of recursion to compute the polynomials is not a good strategy for computation and a more efficient approach, such as the use of asymptotic expansions,is recommended. In this paper, we give an overview of the asymptotic expansions considered in [8] for computing Laguerre polynomials $L^{(α)}_n(x)$ for bounded values of the parameter $α$. Additionally, we show examples of the computational performance of an asymp…
Classical settings of discrete and continuous orthogonal expansions, like Laguerre, Bessel and Jacobi, are associated with second order differential operators playing the role of the Laplacian. These depend on certain parameters of type that are usually restricted to a half-line, or a product of half-lines if higher dimensions are considered. Following earlier research done by Hajmirzaahmad, we deal in this paper with Laplacians in the above-mentioned contexts with no restrictions on the type parameters and bring to attention naturally associated orthogonal systems that in fact involve the cla…
We consider polynomials that are orthogonal over an analytic Jordan curve L with respect to a positive analytic weight, and show that each such polynomial of sufficiently large degree can be expanded in a series of certain integral transforms that converges uniformly in the whole complex plane. This expansion yields, in particular and simultaneously, Szego's classical strong asymptotic formula and a new integral representation for the polynomials inside L. We further exploit such a representation to derive finer asymptotic results for weights having finitely many singularities (all of algebrai…
Using Lie theory, Stefano Capparelli conjectured an interesting Rogers-Ramanujan type partition identity in his 1988 Rutgers Ph.D. thesis. The first proof was given by George Andrews, using combinatorial methods. Later, Capparelli was able to provide a Lie theoretic proof. Most combinatorial Rogers-Ramanujan type identities (e.g. the Göllnitz-Gordon identities, Gordon's combinatorial generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, etc.) have an analytic counterpart. The main purpose of this paper is to provide two new series representations for the infinite product associated with Capparell…
We write spectral decomposition of the hypergeometric differential operator on the contour $Re z=1/2$ (multiplicity of spectrum is 2). As a result, we obtain an integral transform that differs from the Jacobi (or Olevsky) transform. We also try to do a step towards vector-valued special functions and construct a 3F2 orthogonal basis in the space of functions having values in 2-dimensional space. This basis is lying in an analytic continuation of continuous dual Hahn polynomials with respect to number $n$ of a polynomial. In Addendum, we discuss a vector-value analog of the Meixner--Pollachek o…
We study the Fourier orthogonal expansions with respect to the Laguerre type weigh functions on the conic surface of revolution and the domain bounded by such a surface. The main results include a closed form formula for the reproducing kernels, which is the kernel of the orthogonal projection operator and a pseudo convolution structure on the conic domain; the latter is shown to be bounded in an appropriate $L^p$ space and used to study mean convergence of the Cesàro means of the Laguerre expansions on conic domains.
Let $g(x)=χ_B(x)$ be the indicator function of a bounded convex set in $\Bbb R^d$, $d\geq 2$, with a smooth boundary and everywhere non-vanishing Gaussian curvature. Using a combinatorial appraoch we prove that if $d \neq 1 \mod 4$, then there does not exist $S \subset {\Bbb R}^{2d}$ such that ${ \{g(x-a)e^{2 πi x \cdot b} \}}_{(a,b) \in S}$ is an orthonormal basis for $L^2({\Bbb R}^d)$.
In this paper we study sharp estimates for the Schrödinger operator via the framework of orthogonal polynomials. We use spherical harmonics and Gegenbauer polynomials to prove a new weighted inequality for the Schrödinger equation that is maximized by radial functions. We use Hermite and Laguerre polynomial expansions to produce sharp Strichartz estimates for even exponents. In particular, for radial initial data in dimension 2, we establish an interesting connection of the Strichartz norm with a combinatorial problem about words with four letters.
We are interested in the asymptotic behavior of orthogonal polynomials of the generalized Jacobi type as their degree $n$ goes to $\infty$. These are defined on the interval $[-1,1]$ with weight function $w(x)=(1-x)^α(1+x)^βh(x)$, $α,β>-1$ and $h(x)$ a real, analytic and strictly positive function on $[-1,1]$. This information is available in the work of Kuijlaars, McLaughlin, Van Assche and Vanlessen, where the authors use the Riemann--Hilbert formulation and the Deift--Zhou non-linear steepest descent method. We show that computing higher-order terms can be simplified, leading to their effic…
We study asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients of orthogonal polynomials associated to the generalized Jacobi weight, which is a weight function with a finite number of algebraic singularities on $[-1,1]$. The recurrence coefficients can be written in terms of the solution of the corresponding Riemann-Hilbert problem for orthogonal polynomials. Using the steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou, we analyze the Riemann-Hilbert problem, and obtain complete asymptotic expansions of the recurrence coefficients. We will determine explicitly the order $1/n$ terms in the expansions. A critical …
