We prove that weakly unconditionally Cauchy (w.u.C.) series and unconditionally converging (u.c.) series are preserved under the action of polynomials or holomorphic functions on Banach spaces, with natural restrictions in the latter case. Thus it is natural to introduce the unconditionally converging polynomials, defined as polynomials taking w.u.C. series into u.c.\ series, and analogously, the unconditionally converging holomorphic functions. We show that most of the classes of polynomials which have been considered in the literature consist of unconditionally converging polynomials. Then we study several ``polynomial properties'' of Banach spaces, defined in terms of relations of inclusion between classes of polynomials, and also some ``holomorphic properties''. We find remarkable differences with the corresponding ``linear properties''. For example, we show that a Banach space $E$ has the polynomial property (V) if and only if the spaces of homogeneous scalar polynomials ${\cal P}(^k\!E)$, $k\in{\bf N}$, or the space of scalar holomorphic mappings of bounded type ${\cal H}_b(E),$ are reflexive. In this case the dual space $E^*$, like the dual of Tsirelson's space, is reflexive and contains no copies of $\ell_p$.
In the present paper we study unconditionally $p$-converging operators and Dunford-Pettis property of order $p$. New characterizations of unconditionally $p$-converging operators and Dunford-Pettis property of order $p$ are established. Six quantities are defined to measure how far an operator is from being unconditionally $p$-converging. We prove quantitative versions of relationships of completely continuous operators, unconditionally $p$-converging operators and unconditionally converging operators. We further investigate possible quantifications of the Dunford-Pettis property of order $p$.
We construct an indecomposable reflexive Banach space $X_{ius}$ such that every infinite dimensional closed subspace contains an unconditional basic sequence. We also show that every operator $T\in \mathcal{B}(X_{ius})$ is of the form $λI+S$ with $S$ a strictly singular operator.
We construct a Bourgain-Delbaen $\mathscr{L}_\infty$-space $\mathfrak{X}_{Kus}$ with strongly heterogenous structure: any bounded operator on $\mathfrak{X}_{Kus}$ is a compact perturbation of a multiple of the identity, whereas the space $\mathfrak{X}_{Kus}$ is saturated with unconditional basic sequences.
We prove a structural property of the class of unconditionally saturated separable Banach spaces. We show, in particular, that for every analytic set $\aaa$, in the Effros-Borel space of subspaces of $C[0,1]$, of unconditionally saturated separable Banach spaces, there exists an unconditionally saturated Banach space $Y$, with a Schauder basis, that contains isomorphic copies of every space $X$ in the class $\aaa$.
Suppose that $X$ is a Banach space. We will show that $X$ does not contain a copy of $c_0$ if and only if for each series which is not unconditionally convergent in $X$ respective sets coding all bounded subseries and rearrangements are meager. We use Bessaga-Pełczy{ń}ski $c_0-$Theorem and concept of uniformly unconditionally bounded series. Moreover we prove similar result for the ideal boundedness for a class of Baire ideals using Talagrand's characterisation.
We show that the classification problem for genus n Banach spaces can be reduced to the unconditionally primary case and that the critical case there is n=2. It is further shown that a genus n Banach space is unconditionally primary if and only if it contains a complemented subspace of genus (n-1). We begin the process of classifying the genus 2 spaces by showing they have a strong decomposition property.
We introduce the class of Orlicz-Pettis polynomials between Banach spaces, defined by their action on weakly unconditionally Cauchy series. We give a number of equivalent definitions, examples and counterexamples which highlight the differences between these polynomials and the corresponding linear operators.
In 1947, M. S. Macphail constructed a series in $\ell_{1}$ that converges unconditionally but does not converge absolutely. According to the literature, this result helped Dvoretzky and Rogers to finally answer a long standing problem of Banach Space Theory, by showing that in all infinite-dimensional Banach spaces, there exists an unconditionally summable sequence that fails to be absolutely summable. More precisely, the Dvoretzky--Rogers Theorem asserts that in every infinite-dimensional Banach space $E$ there exists an unconditionally convergent series ${\textstyle\sum}x^{(j)}$ such that ${…
We give a characterization of the existence of copies of $c_{0}$ in Banach spaces in terms of indexes. As an application, we deduce new proofs of James Distortion theorem and Bessaga-Pełczynski theorem about weakly unconditionally Cauchy series.
We prove in this short report that for arbitrary weak converging sequence of sigma-finite Borelian measures in the separable Banach space there is a compact embedded separable subspace such that this measures not only are concentrated in this subspace but weak converge therein.
These notes are dedicated to the study of the complexity of several classes of separable Banach spaces. We compute the complexity of the Banach-Saks property, the alternating Banach-Saks property, the complete continuous property, and the LUST property. We also show that the weak Banach-Saks property, the Schur property, the Dunford-Pettis property, the analytic Radon-Nikodym property, the set of Banach spaces whose set of unconditionally converging operators is complemented in its bounded oper- ators, the set of Banach spaces whose set of weakly compact operators is complemented in its bounde…
This preprint concerns Banach spaces of functions converging at infinity. In particular, spaces of continuous functions, Lebesgue spaces and sequence spaces. In each framework we show versions of Riesz's representation theorem.
In order to measure qualitative properties we introduce a notion of a type for arbitrary normed spaces which measures the worst possible growth of partial sums of sequences weakly converging to zero. The ideas can be traced back to Banach and Mazur who used this type to compare the so-called linear dimension of classical Banach spaces. As an application we compare the linear dimension and investigate isomorphy of some classical Banach spaces.
Let $A,X,Y$ be Banach spaces and $A\times X\to Y$, $(a,x)\mapsto ax$, be a continuous bilinear function, called a *Banach action*. We say that this action *preserves unconditional convergence* if for every bounded sequence $(a_n)_{n\inω}$ in $A$ and unconditionally convergent series $\sum_{n\inω}x_n$ in $X$ the series $\sum_{n\inω}a_nx_n$ is unconditionally convergent. We prove that a Banach action $A\times X\to Y$ preserves unconditional convergence if and only if for any linear functional $y^*\in Y^*$ the operator $D_{y^*}:X\to A^*$, $D_{y^*}(x)(a)=y^*(ax)$, is absolutely summing. Combining …
We present here a new method for approximating functions defined on superreflexive Banach spaces by differentiable functions with $α$-Hölder derivatives (for some $0<α\leq 1$). The smooth approximation is given by means of an explicit formula enjoying good properties from the minimization point of view. For instance, for any function $f$ which is bounded below and uniformly continuous on bounded sets this formula gives a sequence of $Δ$-convex ${\Cal{C}}^{1,α}$ functions converging uniformly on bounded sets to $f$ and preserving the infimum and the set of minimizers of $f$. The techniques we d…
A Banach space $X$ has Pełczy\' nski's property (V) if for every Banach space $Y$ every unconditionally converging operator $T\colon X\to Y$ is weakly compact. In 1962, Aleksander Pełczy\' nski showed that $C(K)$ spaces for a compact Hausdorff space $K$ enjoy the property (V), and some generalizations of this theorem have been proved since then. We introduce several possibilities of quantifying the property (V). We prove some characterizations of the introduced quantitative versions of this property, which allow us to prove a quantitative version of Pelczynski's result about $C(K)$ spaces and …
Assume that $\mathcal{I}$ is an ideal on $\mathbb{N}$, and $\sum_n x_n$ is a divergent series in a Banach space $X$. We study the Baire category, and the measure of the set $A(\mathcal{I}):=\left\{t \in \{0,1\}^{\mathbb{N}} \colon \sum_n t(n)x_n \textrm{ is } \mathcal{I}\textrm{-convergent}\right\}$. In the category case, we assume that $\mathcal{I}$ has the Baire property and $\sum_n x_n$ is not unconditionally convergent, and we deduce that $A(\mathcal{I})$ is meager. We also study the smallness of $A(\mathcal{I})$ in the measure case when the Haar probability measure $λ$ on $\{0,1\}^{\mathb…
Let $X$ be a Banach holomorphic function space on the unit disk. A linear polynomial approximation scheme for $X$ is a sequence of bounded linear operators $T_n:X\to X$ with the property that, for each $f\in X$, the functions $T_n(f)$ are polynomials converging to $f$ in the norm of the space. We completely characterize those spaces $X$ that admit a linear polynomial approximation scheme. In particular, we show that it is NOT sufficient merely that polynomials be dense in $X$.
Multipliers have been recently introduced as operators for Bessel sequences and frames in Hilbert spaces. These operators are defined by a fixed multiplication pattern (the symbol) which is inserted between the analysis and synthesis operators. In this paper, we will generalize the concept of Bessel multipliers for p-Bessel and p-Riesz sequences in Banach spaces. It will be shown that bounded symbols lead to bounded operators. Symbols converging to zero induce compact operators. Furthermore, we will give sufficient conditions for multipliers to be nuclear operators. Finally, we will show the c…
A Banach space X has Pelczynski's property (V) if for every Banach space Y every unconditionally converging operator T: X -> Y is weakly compact. H. Pfitzner proved that C*-algebras have Pelczynski's property (V). In the preprint "H. Krulisova: Quantification of Pelczynski's property (V)" the author explores possible quantifications of the property (V) and shows that C(K) spaces for a compact Hausdorff space K enjoy a quantitative version of the property (V). In this paper we generalize this result by quantifying Pfitzner's theorem. Moreover, we prove that in dual Banach spaces a quantitative …
We study random unconditionality of Dirichlet series in vector-valued Hardy spaces $\mathcal H_p(X)$. It is shown that a Banach space $X$ has type 2 (respectively, cotype 2) if and only if for every choice $(x_n)_n\subset X$ it follows that $(x_n n^{-s})_n$ is Random unconditionally convergent (respectively, divergent) in $\mathcal H_2(X)$. The analogous question on $\mathcal H_p(X)$ spaces for $p\neq2$ is also explored. We also provide explicit examples exhibiting the differences between the unconditionality of $(x_n n^{-s})_n$ in $\mathcal H_p(X)$ and that of $(x_n z^n)_n$ in $H_p(X)$.
Given Banach spaces E and F, we denote by ${\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)$ the space of all k-homogeneous (continuous) polynomials from E into F, and by ${\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$ the subspace of polynomials which are weak-to-norm continuous on bounded sets. It is shown that if E has an unconditional finite dimensional expansion of the identity, the following assertions are equivalent: (a) ${\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)={\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$; (b) ${\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$ contains no copy of $c_0$; (c) ${\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)$ contains no copy of $\ell_\infty$; (d) ${\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$ is complement…
In this paper we extend the scope of three important results of the linear theory of absolutely summing operators. The first one was proved by Bu and Kranz in \cite{BK} and it asserts that a continuous linear operator between Banach spaces takes almost unconditionally summable sequences into Cohen strongly $q$-summable sequences for any $q\geq2$, whenever its adjoint is $p$-summing for some $p\geq1$. The second of them states that $p$-summing operators with hilbertian domain are Cohen strongly $q$-summing operators ($1<p,q<\infty$), this result is due to Bu \cite{Bu}. The third one is due to K…
